The FDA approves a new device to be worn during the day to reduce snoring and sleep apnea

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved a new device that can help prevent sleep apnea and snoring – and that doesn’t have to be worn at night.

People who snore – and their partners – have very few options in the market right now to alleviate their suffering. And a lot of what is available involves uncomfortable mouthguards or noisy C-Pap machines.

Approved on Friday, the eXciteOSA device is the first of its kind to be approved to treat sleep apnea and snoring by improving tongue muscle function by electrically stimulating the tongue through a mouthpiece worn for 20 minutes a day. It helps retrain the tongue to prevent it from collapsing backwards and blocking airflow while you sleep.

Obstructive sleep apnea is widespread and occurs when the upper airway becomes repeatedly blocked during sleep, reducing or completely blocking airflow. If left untreated, OSA can lead to serious complications such as glaucoma, heart attack, diabetes, cancer, and cognitive and behavioral disorders.

“Obstructive sleep apnea not only affects the quality of sleep, it can also have other serious health effects if left untreated. Today’s approval provides a new option for thousands of people with snoring or mild sleep apnea,” said Dr. Malvina Eydelman, director of the Ophthalmic, Anesthetic, Respiratory, ENT, and Dental Devices Bureau at the FDA’s Center for Equipment and Radiological Health.

The eXciteOSA mouthpiece has four electrodes, two above the tongue and two under the tongue. It provides electrical muscle stimulation in sessions that consist of a series of electrical impulses with periods of rest in between. It is used once a day for 20 minutes while you are awake, for 6 weeks, and then once a week thereafter.

The agency said the device reduced loud snoring by 20% in 87 of the 115 patients studied. Of the patients who all snored, 48 also had mild sleep apnea.

The most common side effects observed were excessive salivation, tongue or tooth discomfort, tongue tingling, tenderness to filling, metallic taste, gagging, and tight jaw.

The FDA has granted Signifier Medical Technologies marketing authorization.

Changes in the geography of Mar always attract significant scientific and even public attention. The hope for signs of liquid water (and therefore life) is probably one of the main driving forces behind this interest. A particularly noticeable change feature are the Recurring Slope Lineae (RSL), which were originally found by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Now scientists at the SETI Institute have a modified theory of where these RSLs could develop – a combination of water ice and salt just below the Martian surface.

According to the SETI team, led by Janice Bishop, Senior Research Scientist, these RSLs are created in two steps. First, underground water ice must mix with a combination of chlorine salts and sulfates to create a kind of slurry that destabilizes the regolith in the area. Then the dry wind and dust storms of Mars take over and blow the destabilized material in new patterns over the Martian surface.

This isn’t the first time researchers have suggested that chlorine salts may be involved in the formation of RSL. As with much good science, this theory has now been further substantiated by data collected from both field and laboratory experiments.

Unfortunately, the field tests could not be carried out on Mars itself (at least not yet). However, there are several places on our home planet that are considered “Mars analogues,” including the Dead Sea in Israel, Salar de Pajonales in the Atacama Desert and the arid valleys in Antarctica.

The SETI team collected data at some of these points and found that surface destabilization was already observed when salt interacted with gypsum, a type of sulfate. For this project, the team collected data in the dry valleys, where the soil geology and temperature are remarkably similar to what the Phoenix lander and MRO found on Mars.

Fieldwork was followed by laboratory work when the team subjected the Mars analog regolith tests using colored indicators that showed how the regolith simulant would react if subjected to the same chemical reactions that occurred in Antarctica.

All of this data collection resulted in a geological model with sulfates, chlorides, and water that can explain the occurrence of RSLs on the Martian surface. The model also has implications for the habitability of Mars subsurface and how the presence of that slurry could affect the red planet’s biosphere. Until there is more on-site testing, this model will be difficult to prove, but many are planned for Mars in the near future.

Dozens of states and cities are reclaiming thousands of additional doses of the Covid-19 vaccine that were supposed to be used by CVS and Walgreens to immunize nursing home residents through a federal partnership set up by the Trump administration.

The partnership, known as the Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program, enabled states to use CVS, Walgreens, and other retail pharmacies to vaccinate nursing home residents and workers. According to Kristen Nordlund, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the federal government has urged states to allocate “adequate vaccine supplies” to the program if they choose to do so.

Now a team from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is hoping to upgrade an existing telescope at the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia to replace the fancy Puerto Rican one and provide even more accurate images of near-Earth objects in the radio spectrum.

The Green Bank Telescope (GBT) is already the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope. However, in order to get close to the 300 m high observation area of ​​Arecibo, the 100 m long observation area of ​​GBT would have to be upgraded.

This upgrade comes from a unique source – major defense company Raytheon. Raytheon itself has extensive experience in radar from years of experience in developing military radar systems. With this collected data, technologists from Raytheon and the NRAO can build a much more powerful radar system for the telescope. With an estimated output of 500 kilowatts, astronomers can bounce radar signals off never-before-accessible objects like Uranus and Neptune.

While upgrading to GBT doesn’t really replace what’s lost in Puerto Rico, it does provide access to data that has never been available before. With luck and a lot of work by scientists, this increased happiness will also lead to a better understanding of our place in the solar system.

The last time there was an NCAA tournament without Duke or Kentucky, there really wasn’t an “NCAA tournament,” and the term “Final Four” wasn’t a staple in the sports dictionary. It was just a small group of savvy basketball teams that got together and played a few hoops until UCLA was crowned national champions.

The 1976 NCAA basketball championship went without the Wildcats or the Blue Devils. Back then, it wasn’t that big of a deal that either was missing, as this was still a time when the tournament field had recently been liberated from its confinement to conference champions and successful independents. Duke hadn’t made it since 1966; This was Kentucky’s second missed tournament of the 1970s.

It’s a pretty big deal now. Under John Calipari and Mike Krzyzewski, Kentucky and Duke have won three of the last 10 NCAA titles. Duke has played every tournament since 1996; Kentucky has only been absent twice since 1992. And this is a sudden drop because if there had been a tournament in March 2020 it would have likely been at least a number 3.

So what went wrong?

Why is Kentucky 5-11 and seventh in the Southeastern Conference? Why is Duke going to set a 6-7 record in his first game against rival North Carolina this season, where no one has been # 1 for the first time since February 1960? Some of us weren’t even born when this game was taking place.

The answer: a lot.

Recruitment. It starts here for both the Blue Devils and the Wildcats. Although they entered the season with recruiting classes # 1 and 3, it’s important to understand how the methodology works for these leaderboards. Winning a plethora of five- and four-star players is a big deal, even if one of them isn’t a game changer like Anthony Davis or Marvin Bagley – or more specifically, Cade Cunningham or Evan Mobley.

“I think the fundamental difference is that there is a huge difference between the surefire professional – Cade Cunningham, John Wall – and the kid who is only half a step below when you look at one-year-olds and first year children 247 Sports recruiting analyst Brian Snow told Sporting News. “Especially when you play against 22- or 23-year-old boys.”

The promising players they got, like Brandon Boston in the UK and Jalen Johnson at Duke, are struggling in a few areas.

“You are not that transformative talent. You are very good,” said Snow. “At 18 you can’t be the best players on your team, and I think Duke and Kentucky meet them.”

Storage. Perhaps the biggest problem that has developed is that so many players who participate in these programs feel that the very mere recruitment they do is magically turning them into professional elite prospects.

Hey it happened to some. In Kentucky, three players rated outside the top 30 in their high school classes (Eric Bledsoe, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Tyler Herro) became one-off first-round draft picks. Justise Winslow was number 13 in his recruiting class and only a year later number 10 in the NBA first round selection.

But it doesn’t work that way for everyone. Some were sensible about their draft prospects; PJ Washington stayed in Kentucky for his sophomore year and became a lottery election. Immanuel Quickley was named SEC Player of the Year 2020 and a Knicks selection in the first round. Grayson Allen stayed with Duke for four years and became number 21 in the 2018 draft.

However, these were the exceptions. There have been more players like EJ Montgomery who averaged 4.8 points and 4.6 rebounds left vacant for his two-year career in the UK. And why shouldn’t he? He scored 4.8 points per game. He now plays in Lithuania for Nevezis Optibet and averages 2.3 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Duke’s Cassius Stanley averaged 12.6 points and shot 36 percent to 3s as a freshman last season. He lasted until the 54th draft election for 2020. He played eight games for the Pacers but will now join the G League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

They seem to be feeling the pressure or expectation to immediately succeed as a design prospect because they decided to go to college. Duke has left four players since 2018, pending selection in the second round, and two more who have not been drafted. They can develop into players who can be differentiators. But you have to stay for it to happen.

Pandemic. Calipari said on his radio show on Thursday that he had always believed in the development time the UK spent in the summer and early fall of the years leading up to COVID-19 to have so much impact on how college sports work in 2020. But all of these compromises have underscored its importance.

The many young players in both programs did not have the typical summer or season, and in particular they did not have the experience of playing in exhibitions or closed scrimmages.

That made it harder to be ready for the season.

Planning. As he neared the start of the season, Calipari warned that he had over-planned the young Wildcats and that fans would need to be patient. Even he underestimated how wrong he was about this department.

As the schedule was cut short due to the pandemic, the UK lost a number of “buy games” that normally take place at the Rupp Arena. This helps ensure that the sports department makes money and that the team can meet the demands of the large conference circles.
