{Hardware} corporations have to cease competing and dealing collectively to stop future pandemics

Exceptional efforts are being made in factories and industrial areas around the world to ensure that hospitals have ventilators and logistics companies have freezers and refrigerators. Behind the scenes, this production offensive has taken place on an epic, unprecedented scale. It was terribly inefficient in some places too.

Some of this inefficiency is only to be expected. Such short-term, responsive production was always chaotic. However, many of the hardware delays we’ve seen – from bottlenecks in the production line to shortages of parts – could be avoided in the future by applying an “open source” ethos to global hardware production.

Open source design is a form of collective intelligence in which experts work together to create a design that everyone has the legal right to create. The software industry has long shown that “open” collaboration is not only possible, but also beneficial. Open source software is ubiquitous, and the servers that power the internet itself are largely powered by open technology jointly developed by competing companies.

As the pandemic began and in recognition of the looming global emergency, dozens of the world’s largest companies joined the Open COVID Pledge and pledged to share their intellectual property to help fight the virus. On a smaller scale, more than 100 project teams have set out to create and share “open” ventilator designs that can be manufactured on-site to meet urgent ventilator needs around the world.

Unfortunately, none of these initiatives succeeded in making ventilators at the speed demanded by stretched hospitals in the first few weeks of the pandemic. After examining existing attempts to share the intellectual property of machines, our recently published paper concludes that to be successful with open hardware, projects must be open from the start. Everything from the first scribble on a napkin to detailed calculations that verify safety must be available if other experts and manufacturers want to participate in the design.

Medical ventilators have been in particular demand since the beginning of the pandemic. Dan Race / Shutterstock

The way to open hardware

Building hardware through open collaboration can be daunting. Unlike all of the virtual collaboration required for software development, hardware development requires physical parts – raw materials and machines. It needs test facilities and engineers to perform stress tests and security checks.

There are promising signs that these challenges can be overcome. The RepRap 3D printing project has brought low-cost 3D printing to a wider audience and enabled affordable remote prototyping. In the meantime, the CERN White Rabbit project has shown that even the complex electronics that control the Large Hadron Collider can be developed as open source hardware. But to be efficient, we need better Workflows for collaboration – systems for organizing the distribution of tasks and responsibilities in collaborative hardware projects.

[Read: How much does it cost to buy, own, and run an EV? It’s not as much as you think]

The path from prototype to production is much more difficult and less exciting than the technical challenge of prototyping a device. Manufacturers must adhere to international standards to ensure quality and manage the risk associated with their products. This is especially true of medical hardware on which life depends. A key challenge for open hardware will be to obtain this certification in the same way that private companies do today.

Regardless of the impressive and safe regulations, ventilators built in rooms for voluntary manufacturers cannot be certified for medical use. For devices that are less strictly regulated, such as B. face protection, open hardware is currently used successfully.

To achieve similar success with high-tech medical devices, companies that can be made from open designs are required – such as dynamic factories that respond to global emergencies. It takes time to build these organizations. But we can’t afford to wait for the next emergency: we should start preparing them today to prepare for the next pandemic.

Of course, it is a challenge to find sustainable business models for open hardware: can a system be created that shares intellectual property for free while helping designers and manufacturers benefit from it? In some ways, open hardware has an advantage here: people are used to buying products that online consumers are used to using software for free.

Still, establishing an open hardware manufacturing ecosystem is likely to require public funding or investor investment in non-traditional business models. This would follow the path of the Internet, which began its life and was funded by public institutions and is now home to the largest private companies in the world.

Closer inspection

A homemade microscope made of plastic and wiresThe open source microscope. Author provided

We experimented with our own open hardware project to understand what the future of collaborative hardware might look like. Our OpenFlexure microscope is designed for low cost manufacture in sub-Saharan Africa and is used for malaria diagnosis. We’ve probably spent more time designing the processes by which we can effectively share our knowledge than designing the microscope itself.

In the short term, this slows our progress. In the long term, we expect manufacturers around the world to understand our design and adapt it to their local context. As these processes become more standardized, sharing designs for production becomes easier and easier. The final and most ambitious phase of our project will be to work with manufacturers to produce microscopes that are certified for medical use – a big step towards the open source medical hardware that we would need to better combat a future pandemic.

Mankind knew how to make ventilators decades before this pandemic. What was lacking was the access to that knowledge, the ability to work together on customizing a design, and the logistics to quickly scale the manufacture of complex machines. It will take years to address these issues. If we start this process today, we can address global emergencies more dynamically and efficiently in the future. The conversation

Beyoncé & Extra, who received the Tremendous Bowl with their halftime reveals

When fashion meets soccer.

Although the Super Bowl 2021 is only a few days away, we are taking this time to tread the memory trail. But instead of remembering the glory days of the popular NFL event, in our humble opinion, we’re looking back on something far more important: the best style moments that ever happened during halftime show performances.

From BeyoncéThe eye-catching black leather military jacket, the gold chain harness and the combat boots in 2016 bis Diana Ross‘Larger than life strapless dress that swallowed the stage in 1996. This fashion looks worthy of its own trophy. Back to her performance in 2017, Lady Gaga Several stunning outfit changes have been made, including iridescent soccer shoulder pads, a holographic blue iridescent bodysuit, and matching knee-high boots.

And it’s safe to say that Shania Twain’s fabulous number on the 2003 Game really broke the style line for upcoming shows. The country legend exuded glamor in a diamond-embellished bustier, an extremely cut-out leather jacket and tiny bottoms. She combined her eye-catching look with equally lavish pieces of jewelry, sexy knee-high boots and fishnet tights.

Dubai rejects the Covid label “Superspreader” as a result of the restrictions are tightened

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Dubai has taken tough new measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 and is defending its strategy to fight pandemics after a surge in cases.

The record-breaking infection rates in recent weeks have forced Dubai to introduce new capacity cuts and a curfew on some businesses after opening up to tourists. The authorities blamed “a significant increase in violations of precautionary measures” for the new rules.

Last week the UK suspended all flights to the UAE – the busiest international route in the world. Meanwhile, Dubai banned its popular brunches and closed pubs and bars on Wednesday.

“The approach in the United Arab Emirates, and Dubai in particular, has always been backed by science, and science has informed common sense,” Dubai Health Authority deputy director Alawi Alsheikh-Ali told CNBC’s Hadley Gamble on Thursday.

“The numbers have increased but the health system has managed to keep up with the numbers and care for the sick and in response there have now been more restrictions on activities in the emirate and the UAE,” he added .

But as images of bustling beaches and Instagram celebrities on social media generate anger and envy in the international press, some are questioning the wisdom of Dubai’s strategy.

“What happened in Dubai didn’t have to happen,” Erin Bromage, a professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, who specializes in infections and immunology, told CNBC.

“They introduced the virus, including the new variants, in waves of new tourists and allowed it to spread to the community as well as uninfected tourists,” said Bromage. “The tourists are returning home and sowing infections there, possibly with the new variants.”

Travel hotspot

Figures from the UK Civil Aviation Authority show that almost 300,000 people traveled between the UK and the United Arab Emirates in November and December last year alone. Thousands are flocking to Dubai’s hotspots to escape lockdowns.

In the critical month of December – when a new and highly transmissible variant of the virus spread across the UK – 211,115 people traveled between the UK and the United Arab Emirates. The data only shows traffic to and from the UK and not other countries, which means the total number of travelers is likely to be much higher. Passengers had to be tested before boarding or on arrival.

“We have been following the numbers very closely and are very concerned about the increase in numbers and the emergence of new variants about two months ago,” said Alsheikh-Ali.

Cases have tripled since November, but UAE authorities deny the community is at risk and reject the idea that the city has become a hotspot for spreading the virus overseas.

“We saw variants … that have now been reported in more than 70 different countries,” said Alsheikh-Ali. “I don’t think identifying a particular country as a particular source for a particular variant is helpful,” he added.

Dubai’s business community, which has benefited from the open door policy, is also pushing back.

“Infection rates are much higher in the UK than they are currently in the United Arab Emirates, so it is clearly not the case that the United Arab Emirates are causing problems or being a super-spreader country,” said Chris Payne, Chief Economist, Dubai Peninsula Real Estate. said CNBC.

“The UAE have taken a different path, Dubai in particular, and I don’t blame them for that,” added Payne. “They believe that Dubai’s economy needs to be opened up and it has not been able to withstand the lengthy closures that we have seen elsewhere in the world.”

According to official figures from Johns Hopkins University, 3,310 new coronavirus cases were registered in the UAE on Wednesday, up from 2,730 on Tuesday. The average number of cases in the UAE over seven days is 3,500.

Distribution abroad

While the debate over Dubai’s virus strategy rages, at least two countries have raised concerns about passenger flows in the past few weeks.

Danish Transport Minister Benny Engelbrecht said at least “one citizen” had “brought back” the South African variant of the virus “from Dubai. Denmark has temporarily banned flights from the UAE due to criticism of test facilities in the Emirates.

Dubai is a masked Israeli tourist in the historic al-Fahidi district of Dubai on January 11, 2021. With much of the world tightening lockdowns due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, Dubai remains open to tourism and is considered sunny and escape without quarantine – despite a sharp increase in cases.

The UAE has one of the highest per capita testing rates in the world, with a total of more than 26 million tests. According to the authorities, the test centers work according to international standards and are regularly checked.

Also of concern is Israel, where more than 900 travelers returning from Dubai have been infected with coronavirus. This comes from an Associated Press report quoting the Israeli military. It was said that returnees had “created a chain of infection with more than 4,000 people”.

CNBC was unable to independently review the report and has asked the Israeli military for comment.

Despite the allegations, the UAE authorities insist that they take effective measures to protect the safety of those living and visiting the UAE. That includes the frontline health workers dealing with the rising cases.

“It’s not a good idea, but life has to go on,” a medical worker who performed PCR testing in the finance sector told CNBC when asked if Dubai should remain open to travelers. “We just have to be responsible and watch out. I took my vaccine,” said the worker, who preferred to remain anonymous as he was not confident about speaking publicly without employer approval.

People are waiting to be vaccinated against the coronavirus on February 3, 2021 at a vaccination center at the Dubai International Financial Center in the Gulf emirate of Dubai. The UAE has administered more than a quarter of at least three million doses to its population.

1230948336

Authorities also turned down proposals for a shortage of hospital beds in Dubai.

“The healthcare system here in Dubai has managed to be ahead of the curve with the surge capacity. Any patient who needs a hospital bed can get it in Dubai today,” said Alsheikh-Ali.

Vaccination progress

The UAE is at the forefront of a global vaccination campaign. More than 2.7 million doses have already been administered with the Chinese shocks Sinopharm and BioNTech-Pfizer, and half of the 10 million residents are expected to be immunized in the first quarter.

“We currently have three different vaccines available for people in Dubai, with more than 120 vaccine access points, including home vaccinations for the elderly who fail to make it to the vaccination centers,” Alsheikh-Ali said when asked how authorities the vaccines wanted to alleviate last round of restrictions.

“Vaccinations are our exit strategy.”

COVID-19 outbreak in Melbourne threatens Australian Open – What we all know

All scheduled tennis games in Melbourne on Thursday have been postponed after a hotel worker tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Up to 600 players, staff and coaches are currently in isolation after being classified as close contacts.

The organizers of the various preparatory events for the Australian Open are currently planning to postpone the games for Friday and beyond.

Here’s everything we know about the situation right now.

MELBOURNE HOTEL COVID OUTBREAK – WHAT HAPPENED?

A 26-year-old man who worked as a resident support officer in the Australian Open hotel quarantine tested positive for COVID-19.

The man worked at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. He tested negative after his last shift on January 29th, but returned a positive COVID test afterwards.

As a result, the Victorian government reintroduced the mandatory mask rules and limited the number of visitors allowed in private homes.

Is the Australian Open still moving forward?

At this point, yes.

Although there is disruption to prep events, Andrews has stressed that officials have still only detected one positive COVID test.

The prime minister said Wednesday night’s swift actions are designed to stop an even bigger outbreak.

Against this background, the Australian Open will still take place on Monday.

“At this point, the actual tournament (Australian Open) has no effect,” said Andrews.

“We have a case. We will work very hard to keep the numbers as low as possible. Decisions have been made and we will carry on as we can.”

On Thursday morning Andrews added, “We all understand that there are no guarantees in any of this, but at this point the tournament shouldn’t be affected.

“These things can change.”

ARE TENNIS PLAYERS AFFECTED BY THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN MELBOURNE?

Yes.

Up to 600 players and support staff who were at the Grand Hyatt between January 16 and 29 are considered close contacts.

They must all be isolated until they return a negative COVID-19 test.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN LEAD-UP EVENTS?

All tennis was canceled for Thursday, which messed up the ATP Cup, three WTA events (Yarra Valley Classic, Gippsland Trophy and Grampians Trophy) and two other ATP events (Great Ocean Road Open and Murray River Open).

The organizers of the Australian Open confirmed the disruptions overnight.

“The health authorities have told us that an employee in the hotel quarantine has tested positive for COVID-19,” said a statement.

“Those associated with the AO who have been quarantined at the hotel must now be tested and isolated until they get a negative test result.

“We will work with everyone involved to make testing easier as soon as possible.

“There will be no games at Melbourne Park on Thursday. An update to the Friday schedule will be announced today.”

Victorian Prime Minister Dan Andrews also confirmed that up to 600 tennis-related people are affected.

“There are a number of – around 500 or 600 people – either players and officials or others who have casual contact,” Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said on Wednesday.

“They will isolate until they get a negative test. And that work will be done tomorrow (Thursday).

ARE ALL TENNIS PLAYERS RUN IN MELBOURNE?

No.

Not all players currently in Melbourne are considered close contacts.

Although the preliminary tournaments have been postponed, players who have not been ordered to quarantine will be able to train at Melbourne Park on Thursday.

WHAT NOW?

The tournament organizers will postpone the games on Thursday and have an updated schedule later today.

PREMIER DAN ANDREWS REFUSES TENNIS PLAYERS RECEIVING PREFERRED TREATMENT

With 500-600 people in isolation, Andrews had to deny that tennis players receive preferential treatment during the current outbreak.

“People are not treated differently,” he said at a press conference on Thursday morning.

“I was presented with a list of claims from various tennis players and the answer was no. I think I have really shown that they are not receiving special treatment.

“How people are classified in terms of their risk, and therefore how they respond to public health, the things they have to do are not judgments of mine, but judgments of public health experts.”

THE REACTION

There was some confusion on Wednesday evening as the first news of the tennis shutdowns surfaced on Thursday.

As usual, players posted their thoughts on social media.

Jim Courier gave a decent overview of what was happening in Melbourne.

Earth’s magnetosphere might create water on the moon

There is no doubt that the moon has water on its surface. Orbiters have discovered ice deposits that persist in the eternal shadows of the polar craters. And recent research shows that water is also present in sunlit parts of the moon.

Over the years, scientists have come up with evidence that the moon’s water comes from comets, asteroids, from inside the moon, and even from the sun.

But now new research is pointing the finger directly at the earth as the source of some of the moon’s water.

The new study is entitled “Earth Wind as a Possible Exogenous Source for the Hydration of the Moon’s Surface”. The main author is HZ Wang from Shandong University in China. The paper was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Research suggests that particles from Earth can seed the moon with water.

That the moon has water is not surprising. Astronomers have discovered water in all sorts of places in space, even though most of it is ice. The prevailing theory for this water is that planets and moons matter as they form, possibly supplied by asteroids or comets. However, this paper provides evidence that some of the water on the lunar surface comes from the earth’s wind.

It is likely that the solar wind is responsible for some of the moon’s surface water. The lunar regolite contains silicates, and protons in the solar wind can reduce the oxygen from these silicates. This oxygen then easily combines with hydrogen to form water.

The problem with the sun being the only source of lunar surface water is evaporation. Computer models predict that a large part of it – up to 50% – should evaporate from regions of high latitude of the lunar surface during the full moon. Each cycle, the moon is in the earth’s magnetosphere for three to five days, which means that water should disappear from the surface as the earth’s magnetosphere prevents the solar wind from reaching the moon and replenishes surface water during that time.

This picture from the study shows the moon in the earth’s magnetosphere. The moon is protected from the solar wind 3 to 5 days a month and instead exposed to the earth wind. Photo credit: Wang et al., 2021.

But that doesn’t happen. Instead, according to the Indian Chandrayaan-1 satellite Moon Mineralogy Mapper, the water does not disappear during the full moons. The study’s authors say that an “earth wind” replenishes it.

The solar wind and the earth wind are different. The solar wind is primarily plasma, made up of protons and electrons released from the sun’s upper atmosphere. However, the earth wind is a flow of ions from the magnetosphere, measured with the THEMIS-ARTEMIS mission.

This figure from the study shows a north (B) overview and a south (C) overview of the polar regions of the moon. It shows data from the Chandrayaan-1 satellite’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper indicating the OH / H2O abundance. The red and black bars on the outside of each picture show the moon being exposed to solar and earth winds. The little red square is the Goldschmidt crater, which due to its composition has an abnormal amount of OH / H2O. Photo credit: Wang et al., 2021.

Japan’s Kaguya mission discovered hydrogen ions from Eath’s exosphere embedded in the ground. It has also detected high concentrations of isotopes of oxygen, derived from the earth’s ozone layer and embedded in the surface of the moon. This points to the idea of a “water bridge” from the earth to the moon. This bridge is active on the days of the month when the moon is in the earth’s magnetosphere and replenishes the water lost through evaporation.

While these results go a long way in explaining lunar surface water, they could also have greater significance. If there is a bridge between the earth and the moon that creates water on the moon, where else in the solar system could it happen?

This image from the study shows satellite data for an entire month, including the full moon. During the time the moon is out of the solar wind and in the earth’s magnetosphere, the surface water persisted. A more detailed explanation of this figure can be found in the study. Photo credit: Wang et al., 2021.

The authors have proposed a mechanism for moon water that coexists with the explanation of solar wind. But it’s not yet confirmed. Future studies could provide further evidence that there is a water bridge between the earth and the moon. China’s Chang’e 5 mission brought lunar samples back to Earth as early as December. These samples could contain evidence of the water bridge idea.

If it turns out to be correct, astronomers will immediately (probably already) wonder if a similar mechanism is working elsewhere, perhaps right here in our own solar system.

This study also shows how much more we need to learn about the interactions between planets, their moons, and their stars. The development of water in our and other solar systems can depend on these interactions. This research effort could also help us understand the potential habitability of distant exoplanets.

How the US is making ready for a future of electrical autos

This article was originally published by Steve Schaefer on Clean the fleet report, a publication that provides readers with the information they need to switch to the best fuel economy cars and trucks, including electric cars, fuel cells, plug-in hybrids, hybrids, and advanced diesel and gasoline engines.

It was a week of good news for electric vehicles and climate action as General Motors and the new US president announced ambitious plans to tackle global warming. Both have set themselves a goal in fourteen years that, although later than the often-cited goal for 2030 from the Paris Agreement, is a profound step forward.

General Motors is committed

Years ago Charles Wilson, President of General Motors and Eisenhower’s candidate for Secretary of Defense, said, “What is good for the country is good for General Motors and vice versa.” Democrats on the committee focused on the opposite of the statement, but in the modern case it may actually be either way.

The GMC Hummer EV will be one of the first new GM EVs

When GM first announced its intention to switch to electric vehicles and introduced its vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, I was skeptical. After all, this is the company that made its living from gas-guzzling pickups and Chevy Tahoes and promoted Corvettes and Camaros. But they presented the worthy Bolt EV and previously looked at the plug-in hybrid Volt with green technology.

With Tesla in the rearview mirror (or now maybe seen through the windshield!) One of America’s “big three” has officially backed electric cars and has done so announced their plan to have a 100% electric fleet by 2035. GM will introduce 30 new electric vehicles by 2025, including a new all-electric Hummer! They are developing a new flexible platform and the Ultium battery, which they will make themselves. And they’re putting $ 27 billion on the table for it. With their established for a long time Cross-country dealer network and factories in America are off to a good start.

Last night I saw a recording of GM President Mark Reuss speaking with Malcolm Gladwell at CES 2021 for GM Exhibit Zero. He said the right things and put GM’s plan for 30 electric vehicles by 2025 and everything else. GM’s managing director Mary Barra has also formulated the company’s plans quite openly.

Biden is making progress on climate change

President Joe BidenPresident Joe Biden

In the meantime, America’s new president has come up with his plan, and that is exactly what many of us have been waiting for. Immediately reinstating the US in the Paris Agreement and terminating the Keystone XL pipeline were signatures, but Biden’s Announcement of the move to a fully electric fleet was one Eye opener. This is in line with California’s 2035 target of no longer selling new light internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. The Golden State has led the charge toward lower emissions for decades. It also fits well with GM’s plan.

Ford also plans and releases electric vehicles

Ford will invest more than $ 11.5 billion in electric vehicles through 2022. Emission-free versions of some of its most popular nameplates are on the way, including the Mustang Mach-E, which will be commercially available this year, as well as a Transit Commercial Electric Vehicle and all-electric F-150 coming within 24 months.

The company had previously announced that it would use 100% locally renewable energy for all production facilities worldwide by 2035. This means that energy would only come from sources that replenish naturally – such as hydropower, geothermal, wind or sun.

Mustang Mach-E GT Performance EditionFord’s Mustang Mach-E is its first serious EV (by many)

However, as the maker of America’s favorite vehicle for more than four decades, the F-150 pickup truck, they can make a huge impact by tucking an electric motor under the tall hood. And to capitalize on the reputation of their most iconic vehicle, the Mustang, they just unveiled the all-new Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric four-door crossover that targets the Tesla Model Y (with a heavy dash of Mustang’s traditional styling and performance). If these two pillars of the Ford line of products move the sales needle, Ford will make an impact and begin introducing more electrified vehicles.

It’s easy to see the two surviving American automakers step in in America and write big orders for all these electrified fleet vehicles from the U.S. government and make those American factories buzz with green tech jobs. Win-win is everywhere. Of course, this great transition won’t be easy or instant, but the overwhelming weight of the scientific evidence tells us we must do it now.

GM EV platformGM’s Ultium EV platform will be among its future cars

When Mark Reuss answered Malcolm Gladwell’s question: “Why now?” During the interview, he said it was because it was the right thing to do and he wanted a safe, healthy world for his three grandchildren. As a grandparent, I totally agree.

Courageous initiatives by companies, states and national governments have proven effective in Europe and China, and now, under new leadership and in partnership with its automakers, the US is nearing the turning point for electric vehicles. I have more faith now that we can and will achieve this. By the middle of the next decade everything will look the way it should, and once skeptical buyers will be amazed at the new, cleaner, and better technology. Right now, I’m doing everything I can to get us to the EV tipping point and beyond.

You can follow Clean Fleet Report on Twitter and Facebook.

JT goes off after Lil Uzi Vert tweeted that he solely loves himself – “Proper right here, F ** okay N *** a!”

Roommates, despite not officially making their relationship public, JT of the City Girls and Lil Uzi Vert still have fans invested in their chaotic union. On the final round of the drama, JT kicked off after Lil Uzi posted a post on social media stating that the only person he loves is himself.

JT and Lil Uzi Vert have been guessing fans about the real status of their relationship for several months – although all signs suggest they are together. They have had more than a few public spats since then, but this latest incident could be the biggest to date.

Lil Uzi tweeted a simple message on his Twitter account that said, “I only love myself.” JT responded to his message in record time and unloaded the clip in just a few characters. She wrote: “Right here, f ** kn *** a!”

That was just the beginning, when JT went even further and snapped at a fan who responded to her comment by stating that she shouldn’t let a man “embarrass her”.

JT responded with the following:

“Girl STFU, he is not embarrassed that he is in his feelings! He’ll be fine! just like me … who would embarrass? Lol girl, I’ll tear this down if I ever feel this way! “

Until now, Lil Uzi Vert has not publicly responded to JT’s tweets.

American Airways is resending trip notifications to workers with low journey requests

American Airlines announced Wednesday that it will be sending vacation notices to approximately 13,000 employees this week as a second round of government payroll assistance expires next month and demand for travel continues to be in ruins.

“The vaccine is not being distributed as quickly as neither of us anticipated, and new restrictions on international travel requiring customers to test negative for COVID-19 have dampened demand,” wrote Doug Parker, CEO of American, and Robert Isom, President, in a note to staff.

Rival United Airlines sent similar vacation alerts to 14,000 employees last Friday.

The last $ 15 billion congress, approved for U.S. airlines late last year, urged airlines to call back employees on leave in the fall and keep payroll up through March 31. This was the second round of Covid aid to the industry. Congress gave airlines $ 25 billion last March to keep them from downsizing in the fall.

The airline unions are now seeking more than $ 15 billion in support for the industry’s payroll to keep jobs through Sept. 30, and Americans Parker and Isom said they are backing another round of aid.

“We are fully behind our union leaders’ efforts to fight for an extension and we will use our time and energy to support that effort in any way we can,” they said.

After the U.S. airline’s CEOs reported new record losses of $ 34 billion last month, they warned they wouldn’t expect a sharp recovery in air travel anytime soon.

Employers are legally obliged to give staff 60 days in advance of any possible layoffs or temporary vacation days. The communications do not guarantee that recipients will ultimately lose their jobs.

American offers early retirement programs for employees who have been in their workgroups for more than 10 years, including up to $ 150,000 for a retirement reimbursement package and some travel benefits. Absence leave for one year or 18 months with partial remuneration will also be introduced.

“Obviously, issuing these required WARNINGS is not a step we want to take,” said Parker and Isom. “Tens of thousands of our colleagues have faced extreme uncertainty about their job security in the past 12 months. This adds to the emotional stress that our entire team was exposed to during an incredibly difficult year.”

American CEO Parker warned employees last week that the airline is still overstaffed for current demand forecasts and that vacation days may be on the way.
