This is why ESA’s current focus on lunar cave exploration is so important, and another good reason to take note as it releases more information on some of the technologies leading this advance. An update was recently published on a project called DAEDALUS, which is led by the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg (JMU) and offers interesting new insights into the spherical autonomous robot.

DAEDALUS stands in an inspired space name for the descent and the exploration of the deep autonomy of underground lunar structures. Simply put, the mission is to descend into a moon cave and then roll around in it.

Current mission plans have two main steps. First, the ball is lowered into a lava tube on the moon’s surface using a crane. During the descent, the sphere uses its instruments to identify and avoid obstacles that could hinder its progress. As soon as it reaches the bottom of the skylight of the lava tube, the sphere releases from the tether and begins an autonomous scouting mission of as much cave as it can manage.

The cable itself remains stationary at the delivery point and acts as a WiFi repeater for the data from the autonomous sphere, which leads it back to a control center. In the meantime, the sphere will use its abundance of on-board equipment to better understand the environment inside the caves.

How we taught Google Translate to not be sexist anymore

With the help of online translation tools, we were able to learn new languages, communicate across language barriers and view foreign websites in our native language. But the artificial intelligence (AI) behind them is far from perfect and often replicates the prejudices that exist within a language or society rather than rejecting them.

Such tools are particularly prone to gender stereotypes as some languages ​​(such as English) do not tend to use gender nouns while others (such as German) do. When translating from English to German, the translation tools must decide which gender to assign English words to how “cleaner”. Most of the tools correspond to the stereotype and opt for the female word in German.

Prejudice is human: it is part of who we are. However, if they remain unchallenged, prejudices can arise in the form of specific negative attitudes towards others. Now our team has found a way to retrain the AI ​​behind translation tools using targeted training to avoid gender stereotypes. Our method could be used in other areas of AI to help technology reject prejudice within society rather than replicate it.

Biased Algorithms

To the horror of their creators, AI algorithms often develop racist or sexist traits. Google Translate has been accused of creating gender stereotypes, such as translations that assume that all doctors are male and all nurses are female. The AI ​​speech generator GPT-3, which wrote an entire article for the Guardian in 2020, recently demonstrated that it is also shockingly good at producing malicious content and misinformation.

These AI flaws are not necessarily the fault of their creators. Scholars and activists recently pointed to gender bias in the Oxford English Dictionary, in which sexist synonyms for “woman” – such as “bitch” or “maid” – demonstrate how even an ever-revised, academically-edited catalog of words can contain prejudices that reinforce them Stereotypes and perpetuate everyday sexism.

AI learns bias because it is not built in a vacuum: it learns to think and act by reading, analyzing and categorizing existing data – as contained in the Oxford English Dictionary. In the case of translation AI, we expose its algorithm to billions of words of text data and ask it to recognize the recognized patterns and learn from them. We call this process machine learning, and patterns of bias as well as grammar and syntax are learned along the way.

Ideally, the textual data we are showing AI will not contain any distortion. However, there is an ongoing trend in this area to build larger systems based on ever growing data sets. We speak hundreds of billions of words. These are pulled from the internet using non-discriminatory text scraping tools like Common Crawl and WebText2, which maraud across the web, devouring every word they come across.

The sheer size of the resulting data makes it impossible for anyone to actually know what is in it. However, we do know that some of this came from platforms like Reddit, which made the headlines for containing offensive, inaccurate, or conspiratorial information in users’ posts.

New translations

In our research we wanted to look for a way to counteract the distortion in text data sets from the Internet. Our experiments used a randomly selected part of an existing English-German corpus (a selection of texts) that originally contained 17.2 million sentence pairs – half in English, half in German.

As we have pointed out, German has gender-specific forms for nouns (doctor can be “the doctor” for men, “die Ärztin” for women), where in English we do not treat these noun forms in a gender-specific manner (with a few exceptions that are themselves controversial, such as z “actor” and “actress”).

Our analysis of this data revealed significant gender imbalances. For example, we found that the male form of the engineer was 75 times more common in German than its female counterpart (the engineer). A translation tool trained on this data will inevitably replicate this tendency and translate “engineer” into the masculine “the engineer”. So what can be done to avoid or mitigate this?

Overcome bias

A seemingly straightforward answer is to “balance” the corpus before asking computers to learn from it. For example, perhaps adding more female engineers to the corpus would prevent a translation system from assuming that all engineers are men.

Unfortunately, there are difficulties with this approach. Translation tools take days to train on billions of words. Retraining by changing the gender of the words is possible, but inefficient, expensive and complicated. Adjusting the gender in languages ​​like German is particularly difficult because grammatical reasons may require multiple words in a sentence to be changed to reflect the gender change.

Instead of this laborious balance between the sexes, we have decided to retrain existing translation systems with specific lessons. When we saw a trend in existing tools, we decided to retrain them on new, smaller data sets – a bit like an afternoon of gender awareness training at work.

This approach takes a fraction of the time and resources it takes to train models from scratch. We were only able to use a few hundred selected translation examples instead of millions to tailor the behavior of the translation AI. When testing gender-specific occupations in translation – as we had done with “engineers” – the post-adjustment accuracy improvements were about nine times higher than the “balanced” retraining approach.

In our research, we wanted to show that tackling the hidden bias in huge amounts of data doesn’t have to mean the hassle of adapting millions of training examples, a task that could be dismissed as impossible. Instead, the bias from data can be targeted and unlearned – a lesson other AI researchers can apply to their own work.

Since officially taking over as ACC commissioner last month, Jim Phillips has spent much of his time getting to know people within the league. He likes to ask about family, saying it’s a good way to connect. He is trying to build trust, get a lay of the land and absorb feedback from coaches and administrators on what he should prioritize.

Given this pivotal moment for the conference, ESPN talked with 16 athletic directors and football coaches from across the league in recent weeks. From TV deals, merchandising, league championship games and bowl revenue, the two conferences sent member schools about $45 million and $54 million, respectively, in 2018-19 (the last year for which data is publicly available). The ACC, meanwhile, distributed at least $27 million to each school that year.

The Big 12 distributed an average of $37 million to its 10 schools, which represented a small decrease from the previous year. The futures of its TV deals, including the Longhorn Network, represent a clear inflection point on the horizon that has led some athletic directors to again ponder the possibility of another round of conference realignment, which nearly toppled the Big 12 a decade ago.

The Pac-12 saw a small increase in total revenue for 2018-19 and distributed about $3 million more per team than the ACC, despite failing to place a team in the College Football Playoff for four straight seasons and commissioner Larry Scott stepping down in June. While the league has had its own concerns over revenue and its struggling TV network, one Pac-12 administrator suggested there was obvious room for growth, while the ACC had flatlined. A number of ACC coaches and athletic directors who spoke to ESPN for this story agreed with that assessment.

“If we don’t get our TV contract in the ballpark of [the SEC and Big Ten], there will be no level playing field in the Power 5,” said one ACC coach, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “There will not be a Power 5 anymore, in my opinion.”

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers likened the situation to a track meet.

“You’re about to run a 4×100 relay, and you’re Leg 1,” he said. “You’re coming out of the blocks, your head is down, you’re pumping your arms. You slowly raise up and see someone already on the curve, which means your A-S-S is really far behind. That’s how I feel when we’re chasing the SEC and Big Ten when it comes to money.”

There’s no time to wait, Babers said. Closing in on the fastest runner requires an all-out sprint, and every debate over a step forward by ACC members puts the league further behind.

Meanwhile, Babers said, the SEC and Big Ten have a goal of their own: “Never let [the ACC] run them down.”

The league cannot afford to be passive after watching its closest geographic rival improve its fortunes once again.

The SEC just negotiated a new 10-year deal with ESPN that will further increase its revenue starting in 2024. Although terms were not disclosed, multiple outlets reported the deal is worth about $3 billion. The Big Ten’s current deal, meanwhile, goes through the 2022-23 season, and it will likely get a new, more lucrative television contract long before the ACC’s current contract is up (2036).

The ACC does have a check-in window on its television contract with ESPN this spring, and although the discussions between the league and network are not expected to drastically alter the current contract, Phillips views the discussions as valuable. Multiple athletic directors talked about the looming look-in window, believing everything should be on the table to help enhance the football product and make the league more attractive to TV partners.

The conference isn’t immune to financial woes caused by pandemic

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools in any conference are feeling a serious financial pinch and have either cut non-revenue sports or furloughed or downsized athletic staff, and are borrowing against future revenue to make ends meet.

At Virginia Tech, AD Whit Babcock said the athletic department took in about $47 million less revenue than expected for fiscal year 2021 because of huge losses in ticket sales and canceled events, like the NCAA basketball tournaments. Because Babcock was able to cut costs, he expects the final numbers will show the Hokies lost about $15 million. With some schools forced to take out loans against future earnings, shelve planned projects or make dramatic staff cuts, Virginia Tech’s shortfall might comparatively be a success.

“We have 15 teams all pulling into the pits, and we’re all beat to heck,” Babcock said, using an auto racing analogy to explain the league’s financial position amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Some have $20 million in damage, some have $40 million, but we’re all under water. The next race is how we come out of the pits.”

Another ACC athletic director offered similar thoughts on spending. Sure, the SEC has more money coming in, he said, but several SEC schools are spending that revenue before the checks have cleared. A smarter approach to spending — investing in assets with a financial return over gaudy new facilities, avoiding massive buyouts after bad coaching hires — can help offset some of the gap between the ACC and the SEC, he said.

“Everyone’s thought for a long time that our league trended toward the bouncy ball rather than the pointy one. … Has our league ever really looked at pushing football as the future?”

Those smaller changes may all have a cumulative effect, but they also underscore an obvious problem facing the league: The ACC simply doesn’t have the broader football success to leverage TV partners or sell out massive stadiums routinely. Clemson is running laps around the rest of the league, and just as the ACC Network got off the ground, marquee teams Florida State, Virginia Tech and Louisville finished a combined 12-19.

And with men’s college basketball powerhouses Duke and North Carolina being close to the ACC’s base in North Carolina, some coaches and administrators have long suggested it skewed the league’s priorities away from football, which provides the overwhelming bulk of revenue.

“Everyone’s thought for a long time that our league trended toward the bouncy ball rather than the pointy one,” one coach said, “but college basketball is not what it was as a franchise 10 years ago. Does that hurt us? Has our league ever really looked at pushing football as the future?”

Phillips doesn’t see it as a zero-sum decision but suggested the ACC must prioritize its biggest revenue stream across all schools — football.

“We can have it all,” Phillips told ESPN. “We’ve had our moments in the ACC, but we all want to see more sustained excellence because those two sports are important to the commitment we have as a league.”

Nearly all of the athletic directors and coaches we spoke to suggested the massive gaps in revenue present extensive challenges for their schools, affecting the ability to retain assistant coaches, hire support staff and placate fans and boosters when the SEC and Big Ten have far deeper pockets.

“I’m under no illusion that we’re going to close the gap and catch up with the SEC or Big Ten,” another ACC AD told ESPN. “I’m optimistic that we can maintain the gap at the same level of increase that the SEC just got and what the Big Ten will get in their next go-round. If we cannot let the gap get bigger and can cut into the gap in some other ways, that will be success to me.”

But there is not yet a consensus among the league’s athletic directors on the right strategy.

“I don’t know that there’s any one thing that you say, ‘This is the golden egg right here that’s going to change everything,'” Miami athletic director Blake James said. “But I do think we have to be willing, as a league, to look at everything, and working with our television partner and figuring out what’s the best way to position the ACC going forward.”

To truly move the needle, many within the conference believe the ACC needs to think big, and that inevitably moves the talk back to a place it was nearly a decade ago with conference realignment.

And a few COVID-19-inspired tweaks from 2020 offered some insight to options.

First, the ACC brought Notre Dame into the fold for a one-off season amid COVID-19 cancellations. A league member in all sports but football, the Irish needed the ACC to be able to play a full football schedule during the pandemic in 2020, and there are some inside the ACC still upset the league did not use its leverage to bring Notre Dame in as a full-time member.

“We had the perfect ultimatum last year,” one coach said. “We had them, they had nowhere to go. What would they have done? Why would we do that? Because we know that’s our lifeboat out from where we’re at right now. And to be honest, is that not Notre Dame’s lifeboat? Can they survive if the Big Ten and the SEC start lapping everybody? Instead, we just let them run through the front door, take all of our stuff and run out the back.”

As a non-football member of the ACC, Notre Dame’s payout from the league combined with its NBC TV deal added up to about $22 million for 2018-19, less than full-time ACC programs, so the Irish certainly increased their TV revenue as a full member in 2020. But Notre Dame remains adamant about independence, meaning little real movement has occurred behind the scenes. Notre Dame’s TV deal with NBC is up in 2025, and discussions around a possible playoff expansion that could reward conference champs means the incentive structure could change.

The ACC also played more league games — 10 were scheduled for each team, up from the standard eight — and scrapped the divisional format. The result was a larger inventory of quality matchups and two teams that made the Playoff, Clemson and one-year visitor Notre Dame. Discussions surrounding an enhanced league schedule or scrapping divisions are not new, but 2020 offered a litmus test. Perhaps that is why ACC athletic directors are already talking for the first time in years about reimagining divisions (Scrap them? Reconfigure them?) and scheduling as a way to enhance their product.

“There’s a longer play to this thing, but what in the immediate can we try to get focused on?” Phillips said. “What does the ACC look like with 14 football-playing schools and Notre Dame playing five in that mix? Where do we have some opportunities to grow that revenue, including distribution and getting out into households that we haven’t, in a format that allows people to watch us? I don’t think there are any exact or right answers right now, but I’m cautiously optimistic about where we can go in this look-in.”

Still, many coaches said they liked the divisional format because it made for predictable matchups, and programs such as Georgia Tech and FSU, that play a rivalry game against the SEC each year, are reluctant to add another conference game to their slate, potentially losing out on an easy win, making bowl eligibility more difficult, and missing the gate revenue from an added home game. Many ADs and coaches are skeptical there are enough votes to change now; even if the ACC scrapped divisions, it still would need to petition the NCAA for permission.

“Moving away from what we currently have just to move doesn’t make a whole lot of sense,” said Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich, who remains a proponent of an eight-game league schedule because of its annual rivalry game with South Carolina. “If there’s value for us to go to a different format, then that needs to be discussed given that value proposition. We’re going to pay you X-plus if you do something different. OK, let’s evaluate the ‘X-plus’ and the ‘something different.'”

What has been good for Clemson, however, hasn’t necessarily been good for the rest of the ACC, and some coaches and ADs have lamented the elephant in the room — or, at least, in the Atlantic Division — and suggested a shake-up is in order.

“Those types of conversations can all be had as we look to evolve and really take the best of what we learned from last year and try to figure out, ‘OK, how do we massage this to make it good going forward?'” another ACC athletics director said.

Several athletic directors mentioned the Texas Longhorns, along with Big 12 rival Oklahoma, as another potential option to closing the gap with the SEC and Big Ten.

At this point, the conversations are mostly theoretical, but as the smallest and most geographically homogenous league, the Big 12 was a ripe target during the last round of conference realignment a decade ago, and is now looking at its own uncertain future with a new TV deal on the horizon and the shaky status of the Longhorn Network. That could make the Big 12’s biggest brands — the Longhorns and Sooners — a perfect solution for the ACC or Pac-12’s revenue woes and instantly transform an expanded conference into a bigger player in TV negotiations.

But Texas has outsized control in its own league along with a seemingly endless revenue stream, and past dalliances with the Pac-12 ultimately amounted to nothing. Could that change down the road if TV money and playoff expansion dominoes fall the right way? It was a common enough theme among ACC ADs to assume Phillips will at least do his due diligence.

Germany suspends using AstraZeneca’s Covid shot for these underneath 60

Germany has stopped using the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University in the under 60s due to renewed concerns over reports of blood clots.

The move comes after the country’s medicines agency found 31 cases of a rare type of blood clot in a small number of people immunized with the coronavirus vaccine made by the Anglo-Swedish drug maker. The suspension is likely to deal another blow to the vaccine’s reputation.

What happened?

Initially, some regions suspended the use of the shot on Tuesday due to concerns about a possible link to rare but serious forms of blood clots. However, it was announced on Tuesday that the entire country will no longer distribute the vaccine to anyone under the age of 60 after the country’s independent vaccine committee known as STIKO recommended it.

The committee said in a statement on Tuesday that “after several consultations, the majority of the STIKO, with the help of external experts, decided to only recommend the Covid-19 AstraZeneca vaccine to people aged 60 and over.”

This decision was based “on the currently available data on the occurrence of rare but very severe thromboembolic side effects. This side effect occurred 4 to 16 days after vaccination, mainly in people (under) 60 years of age,” it said.

Regarding the question of giving the second dose of vaccine to younger people who have already received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, the German vaccine committee announced that it would issue guidelines on the matter by the end of April.

Germany’s Paul Ehrlich Institute, a federal agency and medical regulator, told CNBC that there have been 31 cases of blood clots in the cerebral veins – a condition known as sinus vein thrombosis or cerebral venous sinus thrombosis – reported as part of a spontaneous admission.

Out of that number, thrombocytopenia (a condition characterized by abnormally low blood platelet levels) has also been reported in 19 cases. In nine of these cases, those affected died.

All but two of the 31 cases concerned women between the ages of 20 and 63, while the two men affected were 36 and 57 years old, according to the Paul Ehrlich Institute.

It added that it “continues to examine and evaluate all incoming case reports and actively participate in the relevant discussions at EMA, the European Medicines Agency, where case reports from all EU Member States are evaluated.

To put the numbers in context: By Monday, almost 2.7 million people in Germany had received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, 767 people had received a second dose, according to the German health department, the Robert Koch Institute.

“Everything is based on a principle and that is trust,” said Merkel at a press conference, reported Reuters. “Trust arises from the knowledge that every suspicion is counted in every individual case.” The 66-year-old Chancellor added that she would also be ready to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine “when it is my turn,” reported Deutsche Welle.

Still, the German move is sure to cause AstraZeneca more pain and confuse the public and worry about the vaccine.

AstraZeneca has already suspended its shot in a handful of European countries before the EMA and World Health Organization reviewed the vaccine’s safety data and concluded that it was “safe and effective” and that the benefits outweigh the risks.

The EMA said at the time, however, that it could not rule out a connection between the shot and the blood clots, which at least occur regularly in the general population. Enough concerns have been raised for Canada to suspend use of the vaccine in those under 55 due to fears of a possible association with blood clots.

However, clinical and real world data has shown the vaccine to drastically reduce Covid cases, hospital stays and deaths. The vaccine is a key part of vaccination programs in the UK and other countries and is viewed as an inexpensive vaccine that is easy to transport and store.

Drugmaker defends himself

Many scientists and the UK government have defended the shot, claiming it had saved thousands of lives.

In a statement to CNBC, AstraZeneca said that international regulators had determined that the benefits of the sting significantly outweighed any possible risks.

It said it continues to analyze its database of tens of millions of records for the vaccine to understand “whether these very rare cases of thrombocytopenia-related blood clots are more common than would naturally be expected in a population of millions of people “.

“We will continue to work with the German authorities to answer any questions,” he added.

The drug company stressed that “tens of millions of people around the world have received our vaccine. The vast amounts of data from two large clinical datasets and real evidence demonstrate its effectiveness and reinforce the role the vaccine can play in this public health crisis.”

Germany had previously not given the vaccine to people aged 65 and over because there was insufficient data on its effectiveness in this age group. However, when more data emerged showing it was safe and effective, it reversed that policy.

The newest spaceship prototype, the SN11, explodes in midair and rains particles on the launch website

Space exploration sure is difficult, isn’t it? Fortunately, it’s an iterative process with engineers testing and testing and retesting to fix any errors in advance. At least we remember when the prototype “Kaboom!” The SN11 is now the fourth Starship prototype to successfully perform a flight test and then explode while attempting to land (or shortly afterwards).

This was SpaceX’s fourth high-altitude flight test, in which a three-engine Starship prototype flew to an altitude of 10 km, performed a “belly flop” maneuver, and then attempted a soft landing. As always, the purpose was to test the spacecraft’s ability to soar, maneuver in the atmosphere, switch from its main to its collection tanks, then reignite its engines and realign itself to touch down on a landing pad.

Testing began at 8:00:05 a.m. CDT (6:00 a.m. PDT; 9:00 a.m. EDT) on the morning of March 30, when the SN11 fired all three Raptor engines and launched the Boca Chica Launch Facility from the landing pad . Live coverage was provided by SpaceX (video below) as well as NASASpaceflight, LabPadre, and other regular observers at the facility.

As you can see from the footage, conditions were extremely foggy and the prototype wasn’t always visible to cameras. However, SpaceX’s on-board cameras captured the ascent and descent phases with both the exterior and engine compartment cameras. The SN11 peaked 10 km without incident, then shut off its three engines and realigned itself to begin the descent.

Again, this was successfully carried out and reaffirmed the spaceship’s ability to control its descent using only its aerodynamic surfaces – namely, its two forward and two aft mounted flaps. Due to the thick fog, the ground-based cameras were unable to take a clear picture of the spaceship during the ascent and descent phases. For a few minutes, only SpaceX’s onboard cameras were able to provide coverage, but these were turned on and off several times

5 minutes and 48 seconds after the flight began, the ground teams began reigniting the Raptor engines to realign the spaceship. However, the engine compartment camera suddenly stopped transmitting a second later. At 8:06:06 a.m. local time, the ground cameras recorded the unmistakable sound of an explosion. Almost a minute later, debris was discovered and heard falling around the landing site.

Some of the debris even landed near the location of the ground cameras, but no injuries were reported. From the last few seconds of footage captured by the SpaceX engine bay camera, it was clear that at least the Raptor engine had managed to reignite. However, the prototype exploded before it could touch down, exploding in mid-air, throwing debris around the facility.

The ground teams immediately began searching the data to determine the cause. Elon Musk took to Twitter shortly after the explosion to share her preliminary findings:

“It looks like Motor 2 was having problems climbing and did not reach pressure in the operating chamber during landing, but in theory it was not needed. Shortly after the landing took off, something significant happened. Should know what it was when we can examine the parts later today. “

In all three previous attempts, the spacecraft exploded either during the landing (SN8 and SN9) or shortly after (SN10). In the case of SN8, the prototype managed to realign itself seconds before landing, but it encountered a pressure problem with its collection tank. This resulted in it becoming too heavy, which resulted in a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly (RUD), which is an aerospace engineer explosion.

In the case of SN9, the prototype passed over during the reorientation and landed on its side, resulting in another RUD. However, the SN10 RUD appeared to be due to a malfunction in the landing legs, half of which was improperly deployed. This caused the SN10 to land harder on one side, causing structural damage to its internal tanks as well as the fuel lines on the landing pad.

The tanks burst a moment later, spat out excess propellant, and launched the prototype into the air. This propellant was ignited by the pre-existing fire and caused an explosion that gave the SN10 an extra boost. This time it looks like there was a problem during the Raptor re-ignition, possibly caused by a cracked fuel line or something that occurred when the mission controllers switched over to the collection tanks.

We will see. Meanwhile, Musk posted some follow-up tweets exchanging information about what kind of Starship tests are ahead of him. This included the next prototype (SN15) and future iterations (like the SN20) that will have the benefit of updated designs:

“The SN15 will roll to the launch pad in a few days. It has hundreds of design improvements in terms of structure, avionics / software, and engine. Hopefully one of these improvements will cover this problem. If not, the upgrade will take a few days longer.

“The next major technology revision is with the SN20. These ships will be orbitable with a heat shield and a step separation system. The probability of success in advancement is high. However, SN20 + vehicles will likely take a lot of flight attempts to survive the Mach 25 entry heating and land intact. “

As always, it goes on and on! In accordance with SpaceX’s rapid prototyping process, the data from this flight will be incorporated into future designs to minimize the risk of failure. On March 18, Musk tweeted a picture showing the first fully assembled Super Heavy Booster in his hangar in Boca Chica. In the near future, SpaceX is also planning high altitude test flights with this and other super heavy prototypes.

Meanwhile, the Boca Chica cleanup crews have cut their work out for them. Much debris needs to be removed and a lot of repairs to be done. You are the real heroes here!
