US restricts travel from India effective May 4th amid massive surge in Covid

Biden’s government will restrict travel from India as that country grapples with a gigantic increase in coronavirus cases, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday.

The policy will go into effect on Tuesday May 4th, Psaki said in a statement. The administration made the decision based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Psaki said.

While Covid infections and deaths in the US are declining as millions of Americans are vaccinated every day, India is in some cases on an unprecedented surge.

India reported the daily death toll in Covid on Wednesday and Thursday. The country has an average of 3,050 Covid deaths per day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, although media reports suggest the official number is underestimated.

India has reported an average of 357,000 new cases per day for the past seven days – an increase of around 26% from a week, data from Johns Hopkins shows.

The country is battling a highly contagious variant of Covid known as B.1.617, which was first discovered in India. Some believe that the variant, which contains two key mutations found separately in other coronavirus variants, is behind the recent wave of infections.

The variant has since been identified in other countries, including the United States.

There are few non-stop flights between the US and India. United Airlines is the only major US carrier offering non-stop connections between the two countries, with four daily departures to India. A similar number is planned for Air India next month, according to aviation data company Cirium.

The new travel arrangement is not expected to prohibit flights, but rather non-US citizens or permanent residents who have recently been to India – a format similar to restrictions that are reported to apply to many travel from the EU, China and Brazil Person who is familiar with the matter.

The Biden government, facing bipartisan calls to help India tackle the daunting health crisis, announced this week that the US is sending the country more than $ 100 million worth of Covid supplies, including 1,000 oxygen cylinders, 15 million N95 masks and 1 million rapid diagnostic tests.

But legislators are still putting pressure on President Joe Biden to do more for India. Members of the House Caucus on India and Indian Americans sent Biden a letter Friday asking him to send additional resources, including vaccines, to the country.

“Our support for India to fight back this latest wave is in the national interest of the US as the pandemic will not end anywhere until it ends everywhere,” read the letter, signed by two Republicans and two Democrats on the House Panel .

Psaki said Friday afternoon in a crowd with reporters aboard Air Force One that two U.S. military planes full of supplies landed in India that morning, adding that more would be arriving soon.

State Secretary Antony Blinken has turned to his Indian counterpart in the past few days, said Psaki.

Jeff Zients, the Covid Response Coordinator, said the US is “continuously monitoring” the situation. He added that America was “in very close contact with our foreign counterparts” and “will continue to follow the CDC’s science-based guidelines on travel and other matters.”

China launches the core module of its new space station

Early Thursday, a Long March 5B rocket – currently the most powerful Chinese launch vehicle – launched from Wenchang and carried the first major component of an ambitious new modular space station.

The station module known as Tianhe (Harmony of Heaven) marks the next big step in China’s program for manned spaceflight in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). China is banned from participating in the International Space Station (ISS) under US law, which prohibits the two countries from collaborating in space, and has been developing its own LEO capabilities for over a decade.

As part of the Shenzhou program, the company launched its first space travelers (called taikonauts) in 2003 and 2005 with a vehicle based on the Russian Soyuz design. A technology-sharing agreement with Russia also allowed China to launch its first space station in 2011: a small space base with a module known as Tiangong-1. A similar platform, Tiangong-2, followed in 2016. Both have since desorbed.

Tianhe is a big upgrade from those little predecessors. The core module houses the life support for three taikonauts as well as power and drive systems. A number of docking ports allow crewed spacecraft to visit the station, but also to make room for future modules (two more large lab sections named Mengtian and Wentian are planned). When completed, the modular station will weigh around sixty-six tons – smaller than the ISS but much more powerful than the prototype Tiangong stations. Tianhe also includes an airlock and off-vehicle activity (EVA) hatch that allows Taikonauts to perform space walks.

Tianhe is currently orbiting lowest at approximately 360 kilometers and 400 kilometers highest, although further maneuvers to elevate the orbit are likely to take place in the coming days to get the station into its operational position. As with the ISS, regular boosts are required to prevent drag from dragging the station back to Earth.

Despite the political obstacles preventing cooperation with the US, other countries are keen to cooperate with the Chinese space program on the station. Several European experiments are already planned in the coming years, and as early as 2019 nine experiments from seventeen countries were selected to fly on the station under the auspices of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

The first taikonauts will arrive in Tianhe in June for a three-month stay in orbit to begin construction and operations. Three more construction missions are planned by 2022, followed by longer-term scientific missions. The completed station is expected to take at least ten years.

Tianhe’s launch site in Wenchang on Hainan Island is one of China’s newest spaceports and hosts its first launch in 2016. It is closer to the equator than any other Chinese launch site and provides access to orbits not available for the more northerly locations (although taikonauts visiting the station will instead depart from the Jiuquan launch center in the Gobi Desert). The station’s other modules will also be launched from Wenchang, which will be upgraded to support the latest variants of the Long March family of missiles: those designed as heavy-duty vehicles for interplanetary missions. China’s first robotic Mars mission, Tianwen-1, was launched from Wenchang last year.

Scientists have found fragments of titanium blasted from a famous supernova. This discovery, made with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, could be an important step in determining exactly how some giant stars explode.

This work is based on Chandra observations of the remains of a supernova called Cassiopeia A (Cas A), which is located in our galaxy about 11,000 light years from Earth. This is one of the youngest known supernova remnants, around 350 years old.

For years, scientists have struggled to understand how massive stars – those with a mass about ten times that of the Sun – explode when they run out of fuel. This result provides an invaluable new clue.

“Scientists believe that most of the titanium used in our daily lives – like in electronics or jewelry – is made in a massive stellar explosion,” said Toshiki Sato of Rikkyo University in Japan, who led the study, which in the journal Nature appears. “Until now, however, it has never been possible for scientists to capture the moment immediately after the manufacture of stable titanium.”

When the nuclear power source of a massive star runs out, the center collapses under gravity to form either a dense star core called a neutron star or, less commonly, a black hole. When a neutron star is created, the interior of the collapsing massive star ricochets off the surface of the star’s core, reversing the implosion.

The heat of this catastrophic event creates a shock wave – similar to the sonic boom of a supersonic jet – that rushes out through the rest of the doomed star, creating new elements through nuclear reactions. However, in many computer models of this process, energy is quickly lost and the shock wave travels outward, preventing the supernova explosion.

Recent three-dimensional computer simulations suggest that neutrinos – subatomic particles of very low mass – that are created during the creation of the neutron star play a crucial role in driving bubbles as they move away from the neutron star. These bubbles propel the shock wave forward to trigger the supernova explosion.

With the new study from Cas A, the team discovered strong evidence of such a neutrino-driven explosion. In the Chandra data, they found that finger-shaped structures pointing away from the explosion site contain titanium and chromium, which coincides with iron scraps previously discovered with Chandra. The conditions required for the creation of these elements in nuclear reactions, such as temperature and density, are consistent with those of bubbles in simulations that drive the explosions.

The titanium that Chandra found in Cas A and that is predicted by these simulations is a stable isotope of the element, which means that the number of neutrons its atoms contain implies that radioactivity will not convert it to another , lighter element changes. Previously, astronomers had discovered an unstable titanium isotope at various locations in Cas A using NASA’s NuSTAR telescope. Every 60 years, about half of this titanium isotope converts to scandium and then to calcium.

“We have never seen this signature of titanium bubbles in a supernova remnant, a result that was only possible with Chandra’s incredibly sharp images,” said co-author Keiichi Maeda of Kyoto University in Japan. “Our result is an important step towards solving the problem of how these stars explode as supernovae.”

“When the supernova happened, titanium fragments were produced deep inside the massive star. The fragments penetrated the surface of the massive star and formed the edge of the supernova remnant Cas A, ”said co-author Shigehiro Nagataki from the RIKEN cluster for groundbreaking research in Japan.

These results strongly support the idea of ​​a neutrino-driven explosion to explain at least some supernovae.

“Our research could be the most important observation investigating the role of neutrinos in the explosion of massive stars since the detection of neutrinos from supernova in 1987A,” said co-author Takashi Yoshida of Kyoto University in Japan.

Astronomers used Chandra for over a million seconds, or more than 18 days, to observe the time of the supernova Cassiopeia A (Cas A) between 2000 and 2018. The amount of stable titanium that is produced in Cas A exceeds the total mass of the earth.

These results were published in the April 22, 2021 edition of Nature. In addition to Sato, Maeda, Nagataki and Yoshida, the authors of the paper are Brian Grefenstette (California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California), Brian J. Williams (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland) and Hideyuki Umeda (University) from Tokyo in Japan), Masaomi Ono (RIKEN cluster for groundbreaking research in Japan) and Jack Hughes (Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey).

Round 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft is in the books. Although 32 talented players came off the board on Thursday night, Rounds 2 and 3 on Friday night will provide a better bigger picture of how each team is faring in adding its latest rookie class.

Several sliding players won’t last long on the board, to the benefit of the teams picking early on Day 2. Based on what happened in the first round, teams have an improved idea of what directions to go to support that pick and stockpile across positions.

Here’s projecting what might happen with many good fits for each team from No. 33 to No. 105 overall:

The Jaguars go for defense taking Clemson offensive teammates Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne in the first round. They will like having Owusu-Koramoah’s natural run-stopping and sound coverage baseline for the second level of their rebuild.

The Jets need to rev up their pressure packages for Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich after taking care of quarterback and left guard with Zach Wilson and Alijah Vera-Tucker in Round 1. Ojulari also can be moved around to be effective in coverage.

The Falcons could benefit from getting more disruptive next to Grady Jarrett and Barmore showed how dominant his quick upfield production could be during the College Football Playoff.

The Dolphins drafted Austin Jackson for the lett side last year and is a strong follow-up to upgrade from Jesse Davis. Getting the prototypical right tackle to be a rock for the running game with a smooth-enough frame for pass protection is a smart move

The Raiders moved on from Gabe Jackson and Rodney Hudson and need to invest multiple picks restoring their interior run blocking, given Richie incognito is also near the end. Davis was terrific in that capacity on the right side.

  • Javonte Williams, RB, North Carolina (5-10, 220 pounds)

The Cardinals like Chase Edmonds more as a change of pace so getting Williams to replace Kenyan Drake as a power back makes a ton of sense.

The Dolphins used Kyle Van Noy for only one season and here’s another way, after first-rounder Jaelan Phillips, for Flores to upgrade the pressure packages in his front seven.

  • Kyle Trask, QB, Florida (6-5, 230 pounds)

Washington has Ryan Fitzpatrick as a bridge but can’t expect to have a real long-term solution between Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke. Trask’s arm and accurate pocket passing is a good fit for Scott Turner’s offense.

The Seahawks also need to get better outside. Carman is capable of playing multiple positions well after protecting Lawrence’s blind side in college.

The Rams could use an outside pass-rush boost behind Leonard Floyd and Roche fits their 3-4 well.

58. Kansas City Chiefs (from Ravens)

The Chiefs would have thought about help for outside coverage had they kept their first-rounder and Melifonwu’s size can be particularly effective in their secondary.

Singapore reports 16 Covid cases in the community, the highest in 9 months

SINGAPORE – The Singapore Ministry of Health reported 16 new locally transmitted coronavirus cases on Thursday, the highest number since July 11 when the country reported 24 cases in the community.

The Southeast Asian country divides the cases into three categories – imported from overseas, in dormitories for migrant workers, and in the community.

In recent months, most of the infections in Singapore have been found in people entering the country and serving its mandatory quarantines.

However, cases in the church have increased this month.

“Overall, the number of new cases in the community has increased from 9 cases in the previous week to 13 cases in the past week,” the ministry said on Wednesday. So far, cases in the community have been around two per week.

Seven of Thursday’s community cases are family members of a previously confirmed case, while eight are related to a nurse who tested positive for Covid on Tuesday.

These eight cases were discovered through “proactive testing of patients and staff” on the ward where the nurse worked, the ministry said. No details were given about the remaining community case.

The nurse had received both doses of the vaccine but developed symptoms this week. After her infection was confirmed, the hospital closed the ward where she worked. A Facebook post also stated that no visitors were allowed to enter the stations until further notice.

In addition to community cases, Singapore reported 19 imported cases on Thursday, bringing the country’s total since the pandemic started to 61,121. As of April 18, Singapore had given more than 2.2 million doses of a coronavirus vaccine, with nearly 850,000 fully vaccinated out of a population of 5.7 million.

Ingenuity accomplished an enormous 50-meter flight on Mars

Ingenuity completed a giant 50-meter flight on Mars

On February 18, 2021, the Perseverance rover landed on Mars carrying the most advanced scientific instruments ever sent to another planet. Experiments have also been conducted to push the limits of exploration and pave the way for crewed missions to Mars. This includes the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, an experimental flight system that will be used to investigate whether flight systems can be used in the Martian atmosphere.

After its first flight on April 19, Ingenuity took off twice more, setting many records in the process. During its last test flight (which took place on the morning of April 25th) the helicopter flew further and faster than ever before. In total, the helicopter covered a distance of 50 meters in 80 seconds and reached a top speed of 2 m / s (6.6 feet per second) or 7.2 km / h (4.5 mph).

The flight began at 12:33 p.m. Mars Standard Time (MST) – or 04:31 a.m. EDT and 01:31 a.m. PDT here on Earth – with the helicopter rising to 5 m – the same altitude as its second flight. Less than six hours later (at 10:16 a.m. EDT; 7:16 a.m. PDT), NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Ingenuity team received information from Perseverance, which was monitoring the flight with its Mastcam-Z-mounted camera system.

The team loved the footage that showed the helicopter flying out of sight and going further and faster than ever before – even during test flights here on Earth. The data obtained from this flight will inform not only additional Ingenuity flights, but also possible Mars rotorcraft in the future. Dave Lavery, program manager for Ingenuity at NASA Headquarters in Wahsington, DC said:

“Today’s flight was exactly what we had planned, and yet it was just amazing. With this flight, we demonstrate important capabilities that will allow us to add an air dimension to future Mars missions. “

The Ingenuity team also took this opportunity to push the boundaries of the helicopter by adding instructions, including asking them to take more pictures with both the color camera and the black and white navigation camera. While the color camera took its first pictures on the second flight, the black and white navigation camera was put through its paces on this last flight.

This consisted of the ability to track surface features under the helicopter and process the images captured on board. These are vital to Ingenuinity’s flight computer, which will fly the helicopter autonomously based on instructions received hours before the data returns to Earth. As it travels greater distances, more images are taken to keep track of its flight path and ensure it doesn’t travel too fast to lose sight of surface features.

As already mentioned, this third test flight exceeded everything Ingenuity could do in test runs here on earth. These took place in vacuum chambers at JPL, which are filled with a thin atmosphere (mainly carbon dioxide) to simulate the conditions on Mars. Unfortunately, these chambers are very narrow and only allow vehicles as small as Ingenuity to move about half a meter in each direction.

To make sure the camera could track the surface while the helicopter flew much longer distances on Mars, the team had to make sure everything was in order. “When you’re in the test chamber, you have an emergency land button right there and all these safety features,” said Gerik Kubiak, a JPL software engineer. “We have done everything we can to prepare Ingenuity to fly freely without these features.”

These preparations mainly focused on the algorithm used to track surface features, but also included the software and hardware to ensure that dust and environmental factors do not affect the exposure of images. “This is the first time we’ve seen the camera’s algorithm run over a long distance,” said MiMi Aung, project manager for the helicopter at JPL. “You can’t do that in a test chamber.”

Like everything else about these flights, these additional steps in the verification process are intended to provide insights that will help you plan future missions. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Team is currently planning future missions with the possibility of a fourth flight in the coming days. With so much achieved, it’s hard to imagine what milestones and records you can look forward to.

As we reported back in August, Chrissy shared a retro photo of herself and Jim from back then with the caption “All I need in this life of sin is me and my friend, it works for me #HotandSweaty”. Elsewhere in the comments she added, “It works for me !!!!!!!!!” Jim responded to her post with his own comment, writing, “Fax u make me look good.”

When fans began to flood their comments with shady messages about the couple who were still unmarried after decades of being together, Chrissy was quick to clap back.

She replied:

“Yes my friend. Motherf ** kers married ain’t what we got, but all of you lonely motherf ** kers wouldn’t know about it. What the hell is wrong with you guys, those are the lyrics to a song and now you’re trying to make it my life. I’m going to get married and win the f ** k I want. “

They designed Jordan Love in 2020, but not to be their quarterback in 2021 and maybe not even in 2022.

Thursday’s news that Aaron Rodgers told some members of the Packers organization that he doesn’t want or doesn’t want to return to Green Bay, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, changes everything.

What if Rodgers gets through and doesn’t show up for the mandatory June mini camp, or if training camp starts in late July or just in time for the season opener?

What started and reiterated last year as Rodgers, 37, that not only did he want to play in his forties, but wanted to do it in Green Bay, turned into a 180.

When he said last May that “my sincere wish to start and end with the same organization, as has been the case with many other players over the years, may not be a reality at this point,” he seemed to be responsible to take over packers who are committed to him again.

A year later it sounds like he doesn’t even want that anymore. According to Schefter, he has even rejected contract extensions or renegotiations.

If so, then all of the Packers’ efforts to keep their team from last year largely intact – they’ve returned 20 of 22 starters in attack and defense – are doing another run at a Super Bowl with the group that did the NFC has achieved the championship game two years in a row could be in vain.

What Love did with limited reps as No. 3 quarterback wasn’t all that great. It’s no wonder that General Manager Brian Gutekunst expressed the importance of this off-season for love. But important so that it can be the backup, not the starter.

Green Bay invested three seasons in Boyle but then did not offer him as a restricted free agent that season. Boyle then signed a one-year freehand contract with the Detroit Lions.

Gutekunst and the Packers have turned down all trade offers for Rodgers. Gutekunst denied shortly after the season that the Los Angeles Rams had made a run at Rodgers, as the Los Angeles Times reported at the time. Gutekunst said that this was “not a truth”. A source told ESPN Thursday that reports of the San Francisco 49ers offering number 3 plus quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and other draft picks for Rodgers were also not true. However, Schefter reported that the 49ers inquired without a specific retail offer.

Either way, it seems like the Packers will have another awkward quarterback transition on their hands – and maybe sooner than they thought. Thirteen years ago, the Brett Favre Packers moved to Rodgers. In this case, Favre hastily withdrew and then changed his mind. The Packers had to exchange him for the Jets in August 2008 because they had already committed to Rodgers.

After an early 6-10 season with Rodgers as a starter, the Packers returned to the Super Bowl competition and soon won one. But that was when Rodgers was the backup for three years. What the Packers would look like without Rodgers in 2021 couldn’t even be that good.
