The Perseverance rover now has a new tool to help scientists and engineers to figure out where the rover goes next. The new tool is the little rotorcraft that was tucked away in the rover’s belly, the Ingenuity helicopter. Ingenuity has now started doing aerial surveys to scout ahead for Perseverance.
During its most recent flight, Ingenuity captured 10 color images ahead of the region where Perseverance is traversing, to help the team figure out whether the rover should remain in its current location and do more scientific investigations or drive to investigate potentially interesting rocks in the nearby “South Seítah” area.
“From a science perspective, these images of South Seítah are the most valuable Ingenuity has taken to date,” said Ken Farley, project scientist for NASA’s Perseverance rover. “And part of their value may be in what they are not showing. Sedimentary layers in rocks are not readily apparent in the image, and there may be areas that could be difficult to negotiate with the rover. There is work to do by our science and rover driving teams to understand better how to respond to the new data.”

Ingenuity took the images from an altitude of 33 feet (10 meters). The team said the flight – the helicopter’s 12th so far — was one of the most complicated the helicopter team has executed so far. It was also the longest-duration flight to date (169.5 seconds) with multiple waypoints as it flew from relatively non-descript terrain outside South Seítah into much more varied terrain inside, and then back out again.
Perseverance itself has taken over 125,000 images in the six months since it landed on Mars. The images are incredible, and not only are they stunning pictures from another world, they also allow scientists to make observations of the rocks and Martian regolith. And the images are also important from an engineering perspective, in that they help the “rover drivers” determine the best path forward, based on what they see in the images.
Additionally, the Perseverance team has the power of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter at its disposal. MRO carries the most powerful camera ever sent to the Red Planet, and its images can reveal details as small as 1 meter (3 feet) across and create precise 3D maps of the surface. Combined with a complementary camera that provides a wider context of the surface, MRO examines the surface at great detail to identify geologic processes that might be interesting for the rover to examine more closely.
This annotated image depicts the ground track (indicated in white) of NASA’s Perseverance rover since it arrived on Mars on Feb. 18, 2021. Perseverance made its first sample-acquisition attempt in the “Crater Floor Fractured Rough” area (labeled “CF-Fr”), right of center in the lower third of image. The “Citadelle” is located in the lower third of graphic, just left of center. The graphic was generated using terrain imaged by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Prior to Ingenuity’s latest flight, the majority of what the Perseverance science team knew of the southern portion of the Seítah feature came from MRO. The team said that based on that data, they believed the site could possibly be a treasure trove of complex geology, providing information that could play a valuable role as the rover team searches for signs of ancient microbial life and attempts to characterize the geology of the area and to understand the area’s history.
But Ingenuity has now provided additional data that shows signs of layered, sedimentary rock that could have been deposited in water, intriguing rocky outcrops accessible to the rover, and safe routes the rover could take into and back out of the area.
“What this image may be saying is, we don’t need to drive further west to obtain the best geologic variety of this first science campaign,” said Farley. “If we decide to make the trip to South Seítah, we’ve got some valuable intel on what we’ll encounter. And if the decision is to stick around ‘Artuby Ridge,’ the rover’s current location, we’ll have saved valuable time. It’s a win-win.”
We’ll provide more updates on Ingenuity’s next flights, and where Perseverance goes next.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker took their love to the next level during an Italian summer vacation.
From luxurious pasta dinners in Genoa to sweet gondola rides on the Venetian canals and a trip to Portofino, the couple kept their twin-style aesthetic and signature PDA. No wonder that Blink 182 Drummer and Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum stole the show when they attended the Dolce & Gabbana Runway Showcase in Venice on Sunday, August 29th. The couple took a moment to hold hands in each other’s eyes during a scenic tour of the canals. Oh we love love!
But the duo’s trip to what is arguably the most romantic country in the world has a special meaning: It is Travis’ first transcontinental flight since the fatal crash in 2008 in South Carolina.
“This is something Travis has been working on for a while,” a source close to Travis told E! News of the musician’s return to the air. “It’s something he wanted to do and overcome. Kourtney was incredibly loving and supportive and through her love, help and trust in him, he was finally able to do it. The people who have been close to Travis since his crash” are so excited on him.”
Jake Paul is 4-0 as a professional boxer after a split decision win over Tyron Woodley, the former UFC welterweight champion, at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse on Sunday. It was a relatively convincing victory, despite one judge’s scorecard, but it was not a knockout like Paul’s previous three pro bouts. The fight went the distance — eight rounds — when Paul had not been past four minutes in any of his three previous fights.
Paul and his team had a plan coming into this fight, but the events of Sunday night make the next step a little less clear than it’s been to this point in Paul’s boxing adventure.
Figuring out what makes the most sense for Paul’s next fight will not be an easy decision. After knockouts of Nate Robinson and Ben Askren, it was pretty obvious that Paul needed a big step up in competition. After this one? That’s not nearly as clear.
If Woodley gets that “I love Jake Paul” tattoo, maybe the rematch is next up. Or if the pay-per-view buys come back big from the United Kingdom, Tommy Fury could be in the crosshairs.

The pressure remains on the polarizing YouTuber to fight legitimate opponents — real boxers. Paul and his team have to elevate the level of opponent in order to maintain the intrigue and the interest of the fans — and yet find a way to protect Paul from taking too much of a leap and risk mortgaging his drawing power.
And of course, whomever the next Paul foe ends up being, it has to be someone who can bring an audience.
“[The next opponent should be] someone who has the ability to make people believe that they can beat Jake Paul,” Paul’s top adviser, Nakisa Bidarian, told ESPN after the Woodley bout. “He’s at a level now where he can’t have easy fights. Every fight has to elevate given the type of attention he commands, given the pay-per-view box-office power he has and the relationship that he has with Showtime. We love, love, love fighting MMA opponents. Not because they’re easy, because they’re not. Tonight showed that. But it engages two different segments of the population.”

Afterward, Paul himself gave his performance a grade of C-minus, which could open the door for a rematch with Woodley. In the ring during the postfight interviews, Paul and Woodley seemed to make a deal that if Woodley got a tattoo that said “I love Jake Paul,” there would be a rematch. Oddly, the loser was supposed to get such a tattoo anyway. In the postfight news conference, Woodley said he believed a rematch would be a slam dunk. But Paul and Bidarian said that they would only consider a second fight if Woodley got the ink.
“Get the tattoo, then we’ll consider it,” Bidarian said. “The longer you wait to get the tattoo, the less likely that you’ll get the chance to fight me again, Jake said. Because you’re not taking this seriously.
“[Paul is] happy he won, but he’s not happy with the way that he won. He wanted to demonstrate that he has that knockout power against Tyron Woodley. So, I think he has an interest in doing it again. So, we’ll see.”
Then there’s Fury, who was brought onto this card specifically as a potential next opponent for Paul. But Fury was unimpressive in a four-round unanimous decision win over Anthony Taylor, an undersized MMA fighter who is a sparring partner for Paul. In the hallway after the fight, Fury and Paul got into a verbal altercation that nearly turned physical.
Paul’s next opponent has to be both a tougher challenge and beatable, which could be a tough needle to thread. Amanda Westcott/Showtime
Fury, though, seems to have fallen out of favor with Team Paul due to his performance against Taylor. Bidarian said it will come down to Fury’s selling power in the U.K., where he is a star courtesy of his family — he is the half-brother of heavyweight champ Tyson — and his appearance on the reality show “Love Island.”
“He didn’t show himself to be as capable as people think he is,” Bidarian said of Fury. “If he’s the boxer that [Paul] has to face, that’s an easy conversation. But it only makes sense for Jake Paul, who is one of the highest-paid fighters in the world, if we think it can drive numbers.”

One thing Bidarian can guarantee, he said, is that Paul is fully committed to boxing. There was some skepticism about that immediately after the bout when Paul talked about taking some time off, getting a haircut and getting his “crooked nose” and “crooked teeth” fixed. Bidarian said Paul has told his team to be back and ready for training camp on Sept. 13 and that the “original goal” was to fight again before the end of the year.
Paul has built a gym in Puerto Rico and is “absolutely not going anywhere,” which is bad news for the many people who have been stunned by Paul making such a name for himself in boxing despite a lack of experience.
“He loves this sport,” Bidarian said. “We’ve already talked about potential opponents afterwards. I think as you can expect with a 24-year-old guy who has been going at it as long as he has, he just wants to take a few days off. It may end up being two weeks off. And then he’ll be right back at it.”
A severe hurricane hits the Gulf in exactly the wrong place for New Orleans and the surrounding area.
Hurricane Ida, a Category 4 hurricane with winds of up to 250 miles per hour, is now on land.
The latest weather radar image (which shows precipitation intensity) clearly shows the eye of the storm (letter E!) Just reaching the coast of Lousiana (below).
Ida has a compact eye, with the wall of the eye visible in the band of precipitation indicated by the blue arrow. A secondary eye wall appears to be forming (red arrow) which temporarily weakens the storm (it could have become a Category 5 storm if the second eye wall has not formed.
The infrared satellite image (which essentially gives the temperature of the clouds and surface) is impressive – the eye is small but well defined, with tall clouds (red colors) surrounding it.
The small size of the eye is a very good thing as the strongest winds are confined to the area in the storm’s eye wall. Here are the latest wind reports (10 a.m.) with the gusts displayed in red (click the image to enlarge). Gusts up to 89 miles per hour. Note the strong easterly winds (from the east) moving towards Lake Pontchartrain and New Orleans. Not good … pushes water ashore in the form of a storm surge.
The maximum wind gusts (see below) are up to 128 mph
The storm gets weaker as it moves overland, but expect extremely heavy rainfall, with totals 15-20 inches in southern Louisiana and large amounts of rainfall stretching into the northeastern United States (see NOAA / NWS forecast below).
Predictability of the storm
The forecast of Hurricane Ida is classic: extremely good forecasts for the storm follow many days, but the forecast of the storm intensity (central pressure and maximum winds) underestimated the storm.
The forecast tracks for the large US and Canadian models on Friday morning were quite good, but were a little too far to the west. (black line shows the trace being observed).
Yesterday morning the route forecast was excellent.
But what about the intensity forecast on Friday? A measure of the intensity is the central pressure of the storm (the lower the pressure, the more intense). The latest observations show that the lower center is down to 930 hPa (hPa is a unit of pressure). Here are the predictions from yesterday morning (black line indicates what was observed). None of the predictions brought the storm deep enough. As a result, their wind forecasts were too low.
Like this graphic from Dr. Brian Tang, University of Albany, shows the winds were about 25 knots too slow for the 47 hour forecast and about 50 knots too slow for the 72 hour forecast.
Why do our models often fail to get the intensification right? One reason is the lack of resolution. To simulate such storms, one has to simulate the hurricanes with model grids of about a kilometer or better, but the National Weather Service lacks the computer resources to do so.
Then there are flaws in the model physics, such as how sea spray humidifies the air over the breaking waves. Or how cooler water mixes vertically in the upper sea surface.
And then this is the need for model data to describe the hurricane structure off the coast.
An apparently significant problem for Hurricane Ida was a patch of deep warm water over the Gulf of Mexico, right on the storm’s trail (see below). Such warm water is very helpful in intensifying a storm.
Finally, there is one thing to note: our ability to predict the tracks and, to a lesser extent, the intensity of hurricanes, is an effective tool in reducing damage and casualties from tropical storms and hurricanes. That is the reason for the deaths from tropical storms are much less today than 50-100 years ago, even with a lot more people on the planet.
Here are the top news, trends, and analysis investors need to start their trading day:
1. S&P 500, Nasdaq to break records with two days left in August

US stock futures rose slightly on Monday after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs on Friday. The S&P 500 ended above 4,500 for the first time ever. The rally of the Dow Jones Industrial Average took it to 0.5% of its record close on August 16. Shares rebounded Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell signaled central bankers are in no rush to hike rates. He said that decision-making about rate hikes is a different path than reducing bond purchases, which he believes could begin later this year. With two days left in August, the Dow rose nearly 1.5%, the S&P 500 rose 2.6% and the Nasdaq rose 3.1%.
2. This Friday job report could determine the future of the Wall Street rally
Whether Wall Street’s profits can continue may depend on the government’s latest monthly employment report due to be released on Friday. While Powell said the Fed had made sufficient progress on inflation, Powell said the labor market had not improved enough to begin reducing. Economists estimate that 750,000 non-farm jobs were created in August and the country’s unemployment rate will drop to 5.2%. The economy created 943,000 jobs in July and the unemployment rate fell to 5.4%. Bond yields remained stable early Monday, with 10-year government bonds trading just above 1.3%.
3. New Orleans dark after Hurricane Ida; almost all oil production in the Gulf was stopped

NOAA | about REUTERS
US oil prices fell slightly early Monday after rising 10.6% in their strongest week in more than a year. Gasoline prices rose over 1% after Ida hit land in Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday. Ida was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved inland, but more than 1 million Louisiana electricity customers were without power, including the entire city of New Orleans. Ida came ashore exactly 16 years to the day after the devastating Hurricane Katrina. In the run-up to Ida, more than 95% of US crude oil production in the Gulf of Mexico was halted. Many refineries were also closed.
4. The US is working to get Americans out of Afghanistan as the Tuesday deadline looms

Senior Biden administration officials said the US is in a position to evacuate approximately 300 US citizens remaining in Afghanistan who want to leave before the president’s deadline on Tuesday for US forces to withdraw from the war-torn country. The evacuations turned chaotic when the US government was caught by surprise when the Afghan army collapsed and the Taliban regained power on August 15, which carried out a fatal attack on Kabul airport last week.
5. Average daily Covid deaths in the US increase as the Delta variant spreads
The seven-day average of daily Covid cases in the US rose 5% to nearly 155,000 as of Saturday. Over the same period, daily Covid deaths averaged 1,274 – an increase of 27% compared to the previous week, fueled by the Delta variant. In cases in Israel, a barometer of US trends, daily infections hit a pandemic high of more than 12,100. Just a few months ago, new infections in Israel had declined by double digits following an aggressive national vaccination campaign, and there were a few days in May and June when no new infections were recorded. About 63% of the Israeli population are fully vaccinated. In the US, 52.3% of the population is fully vaccinated.

‘Manifest’ rocked us all to get on a plane as the show grew in popularity over the past few months and the news that the show was canceled by NBC rocked a lot of our roommates! Well, it looks like ‘Manifest’ will live on after all.
According to Deadline, Netflix recorded ‘Manifest’ for its fourth season after NBC booted the show off the network. The new season will consist of 20 episodes, which will be split into several parts in true Netflix fashion.
It’s pretty rare for a canceled show to be picked up by another network, but fans didn’t play through this one! Shortly after the news broke, “Manifest” fans started the #SaveManifest movement on Twitter and kept viewers high on Netflix after the show was posted on the platform in April.
“Since it premiered on Netflix in June, Manifest has proven very popular with our embers,” said Bela Bajaria, Head of Global TV at Netflix. “Jeff Rake and his team have created a bewitching master who keeps audiences around the world in suspense and believes in second chances again. ”
Couldn’t let such an important day go uncelebrated as it is today.
Manifesto will officially return for an oversized fourth and final season, only on Netflix! pic.twitter.com/HGns7vCvhX
– Netflix (@netflix) August 28, 2021
Jeff Rake thanked fans and Netflix for their dedication to bringing the series to a proper ending after her cancellation left fans with many unanswered questions.
“What started as my imagination soaring years ago has grown into the jet engine journey of my life,” said Rake. “Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that this attempt, its characters and the team that work so hard to bring everything to life would radiate love and support from around the world. The fact that we can reward the fans with the well-deserved ending never moves me. On behalf of the cast, crew, writers, directors and producers, I thank Netflix, Warner Bros. and of course the fans. You did that. “

Over the past two decades, we’ve all gotten used to rovers exploring Mars. At least one rover has been active on the planet every day since January 4, 2004, when NASA’s Spirit rover landed in Gusev Crater. Opportunity (2004) and Curiosity (2012) followed, each on their own unique journeys of discovery. The newest and largest of these robotic explorers, Perseverance (2021) features a state-of-the-art in-situ resource-use experiment to extract oxygen from the atmosphere, an escort helicopter to explore the path ahead, and an array of unparalleled geological instruments . But what really sets Perseverance’s mission apart is that, for the first time, it is collecting samples of Martian rocks to bring them back to Earth.
As advanced as Perseverance’s scientific instruments are, nothing beats the ability to examine samples up close in a laboratory here on Earth. So Perseverance makes a rock collection. It takes samples on its travels through the Jezero crater and leaves caches of the samples for a future mission to collect and return to Earth (sometime in the mid-2020s).
At least that’s the plan. But space exploration is never easy. As common as rover activities on Mars have become in recent years, the Red Planet continues to surprise mission planners. Earlier this month, Perseverance made its first attempt to collect a sample in one of its 43 titanium collection tubes. After drilling the sample core, the team was shocked to find that the sample tube remained empty and was nowhere to be found on the ground around the rover or in the borehole.
The empty core hole after a sampling attempt on August 6, 2021. Credits: NASA / JPL-Caltech / MSSS
The rock Perseverance was drilling turned out to be much softer than previously thought, and the rock only crumbled to powder under the drill. Thomas Zurbuchen, Assistant Administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, told reporters, “While this is not the hole-in-one we were hoping for, there is always risk in breaking new ground … I am confident we have the right team working on it. and we will persistently work towards a solution that will ensure future success. “
This week this team is ready for a second try. Perseverance has positioned itself next to a new ledge nicknamed “Rochette”. Rochette is about 455 meters from the first sampling point on a ridge called the Citadelle. This outcrop has withstood millennia of wind erosion, suggesting it should withstand the Perseverance drill bit more easily.
Nicknamed Rochette, the rock in the center of this image is Perseverance’s next sampling target. Photo credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech.
“There are potentially older rocks ahead of us in the South Séítah region, so this younger sample can help us reconstruct the entire Jezero timeline,” said Vivian Sun, a mission scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The team is also making some changes to their sampling process this time around. Before attempting to take a sample from Rochette, Perseverance will use its robotic arm to “grind” the surface of the rock and study how it reacts. Then, during the sampling process, the rover’s Mastcam-Z camera looks inside the canister to make sure it’s full before sealing it.
As for the “empty” canister from the first trial – Perseverance will also hold it for the return to Earth – it doesn’t contain any stones, but it does contain a sample of the Martian atmosphere that might be just as interesting to learn.
This is not the first time that the rocks and soil of Mars have caused problems for NASA’s robotic missions. Curiosity had to operate for a long time with a broken drill. As early as 2008, the Phoenix lander found the Martian soil “sticky” and difficult to work with, and recently the “mole” of the InSight lander, which was supposed to drill two meters underground to examine the interior of the planet, could not do more than dig a few tens of centimeters because the soil did not offer the expected friction.
A close up of Rochette. Photo credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech.
These challenges keep reminding us that Mars really is a completely different planet and that geology doesn’t always react the way we Earthlings would expect. But with luck and careful planning, Perseverance has a good chance of sampling this week. This brings the dream of a Mars sample return mission one step closer to reality.

21:21 Uhr: In drei Runden geht es heiß her.
Charles Conwell vernichtet Juan Carlos Rubio in drei Runden

Former NSW Prime Minister and Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr believes that despite global famine and resource depletion, Paul Ehrlich was wrong that we should have listened to his warning about global warming.
Everyone’s Afraid ”: The first mention of global warming in Australian media could only point to the future
Bob Carr Industry Professor of Climate and Economics at the University of Technology Sydney August 30, 2021 – 5.58 a.m.
It was 50 years ago – August 30, 1971. I was 23 and watched US ecologist Paul Ehrlich being interviewed by Robert Moore at the ABC Monday conference. Ehrlich said the world population is 3.7 billion people and we are adding 70 million people annually. This destroyed the life support systems of the planet.
The Prophet had spoken. Finally, I thought, someone has identified the driver of all environmental degradation: the explosive growth in human numbers.
I recently consulted the 33-page transcript. I saw a question from the audience that I hadn’t noticed at the time. An unidentified person asked Ehrlich about a cover story in the New Scientist that said the temperature of the world had risen by one degree and if it had risen by 3.5 we would inundate most of the earth.
Honestly replied that he was familiar with this research. “If we continue on our far-reaching energy course, sooner or later we will melt the polar ice caps.“He said” atmospheric dynamics “are now being studied and” everyone is afraid “.
…
Ehrlich was wrong in raising the threat of famine in the world and overlooking the new varieties of crops and farming techniques that allowed food to keep pace with the population. Critics have made a lot of this supposed Malthusianism. But 50 years ago a lot was unknown, not just in the environmental sciences. Western leaders believed in wage and price controls. China and Russia were caught in dogmatic Marxism.
Ehrlich was right about the biggest thing: the dramatic increase in world population that would raise the number over 50 years from 3.7 to 7.8 billion today. It happened on cue. According to a physicist, it explains at least half of the warming – it and the associated increase in consumption, such as the increase in the number of vehicles from 200 million to 1.5 billion. Or doubling the per capita consumption of pork. Above all, the doubling of electricity consumption.
Seriously, Bob Carr, getting almost anything wrong is not a selling point for a prophet.
Paul Ehrlich has frightened entire generations of children with his failed prophecies, just as children today are unnecessarily frightened by empty horror images about global warming.
The harm to children from all of this scaremongering is real, far more real than the fantasy horrors of slightly warmer weather. It’s not just the Greta Communists who are ruining their future career prospects by dropping out of school. There is evidence that some children are ruining their lives on hard drugs because they cannot live with what they have been told about climate change.
How many lives have been destroyed and continue to be ruined because self-important prophets like Erlich and you keep spreading empty horror stories? I’m not saying that you and others are purposely trying to destroy lives – but the destruction of young people is an inevitable consequence of the horror message that you and other well-meaning activists are pushing.
And after climate history finally dies, there will be something else, a new panic. Is always available. From witchcraft to resource depletion to global cooling to global warming someone is always trying to scare the kids.
Please wake up and stop being part of the Bob Carr problem.
Another person quipped, “I was taking my son to the ER when James Corden stopped traffic. RIP my boy.”
“I honestly don’t know how I’d handle James Corden dancing in front of my car,” someone else commented, with another user hilariously joking, “we need to stop messing around and have another lockdown. the risk is simply too high of getting caught in a james corden flash mob.”
Even though many shared cheeky tweets and poked fun at James, British actor, Adil Ray, came to the star’s defense.
“Why this Twitter hate for James Corden?” Adil wrote. “Get off your bloody phones, off social and get yourself on the boards and win a Tony, co-write one of those most watched shows in recent years and pop off to America and make a huge success of one of the toughest gigs on US TV, then talk.”
