Renewable Vitality Fury on the New Aussie Authorities Bodily Retailer Reliability Obligation – Watts Up With That?

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Subsidies for everyone – the Aussie Federal Government is pushing to make electricity retailers responsible for continuity of supply, which will likely force them to pay for fossil fuel generators to maintain reserve capacity to cover gaps in the renewable energy supply.

States push back against subsidies for coal and gas-fired power plants

By political reporter Melissa Clarke
Posted Thu 26 Aug 2021 at 6:27pm

Key points:

  • The government wants to introduce a scheme that would require energy retailers to pay for spare energy capacity in case it is needed
  • Energy Minister Angus Taylor wants it to include coal and gas generators
  • Renewables companies are lobbying against the plan

The Federal Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, Angus Taylor, is battling to get support from the states and territories for his plan to get electricity retailers to pay coal and gas-fired power generators to keep operating.

The federal government wants to introduce a Physical Retailer Reliability Obligation (PRRO) to ensure there is enough energy available in the National Electricity Market (NEM) at all times to fill gaps when wind and solar power cannot meet demand.

The PRRO would require energy retailers to pay for spare energy capacity in case it is needed.

That spare capacity could come from renewable resources like batteries, pumped hydro, and demand management, but the federal government wants it to also include unused capacity in coal and gas-fired power plants.

That could see energy retailers giving money to coal-fired plants and prolonging their use through the system, if their existing spare capacity is cheaper than developing new storage options.

Energy security under threat – Australia has “just months” to fix major problems with the electricity market, according to a blistering assessment of the state of the energy sector.

While the Commonwealth is aggressively promoting it, the states and territories are yet to be convinced, given the scheme could undermine investment in the renewable alternatives.

What can I say – as an Aussie, there is a reason I have a big generator downstairs.

Aussie electricity providers in my opinion long since gave up on the idea that it is their job to maintain grid stability, so there has been a rush to the exit door, with operators of unfashionable coal and gas generators embracing the new renewable energy age.

The Federal government has belatedly realised that, unless they do something, the only people who will be held responsible for the inevitable blackouts and grid instability are the politicians who created this mess.

I doubt this last minute outbreak of almost sanity will save the situation. Coal and gas plant operators still have no motivation to invest in proper maintenance, or build new plants, so Australia’s end of life fossil fuel generators are likely rapidly becoming almost as decrepit and unreliable as the renewable energy systems which are supposed to replace them.

And somewhere squeezed in the middle of this circus will be the energy retailers, who will now be forced to buy expensive unreliable electricity from renewable plant operators when it is available, yet at the same time they will be forced to pay the owners of decrepit coal and gas plants to stand by, allegedly ready to jump in when the renewables fail. Under the new reliability obligation, energy retailers will also likely be expected to pay large fines to the Australian Federal Government, when everything inevitably falls in a heap.

No doubt energy retailers will soon start demanding subsidies of their own, to continue operating in such a hostile regulatory environment.

Elizabeth Holmes tries to assert in court docket that her ex-boyfriend and Therano’s enterprise associate molested her

In a bomb reveal just days before her criminal fraud trial, Elizabeth Holmes’ defense attorneys allege she suffered a “decades-long campaign of psychological abuse” from her former friend and business partner, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani.

“Balwani’s control included monitoring her calls, texts and emails, physical violence such as throwing hard, sharp objects, restricting her sleep, monitoring her movements, and claiming that her success was due only to him,” defended the defense attorney wrote for former Theranos CEO Holmes.

The revelation is contained in documents unsealed early Saturday morning by U.S. District Judge Edward Davila. Holmes met Balwani at the age of 18 – he joined her blood testing start-up Theranos in 2009 as President and Chief Operating Officer. The couple, facing ten wire fraud cases and two conspiracy cases each, later admitted in escrow tapes that they had never told investors about their relationship.

Both have pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing related to what federal prosecutors call a multi-million dollar scheme to defraud investors, doctors and patients.

Holmes’ attorneys plan to “produce evidence that Mr. Balwani has verbally disparaged and withdrawn his affection when he displeased it;” controlled what she ate, how she dressed, how much money she could spend, who she could interact with – which essentially dominated her and obliterated her ability to make decisions, “according to the unsealed files.

“Ms. Holmes’ allegations are deeply offensive to Mr. Balwani and personally devastating,” wrote Jefferey Coopersmith, a Balwani attorney, on file.

The documents also answer the question of whether Holmes is planning a testimony. “Ms. Holmes is likely to testify herself the reasons why she believed in, relied on and submitted to Mr. Balwani,” wrote her lawyers.

The filings also show that Holmes intends to argue that because of her relationship with Balwani, she suffers from mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, intimate partner abuse syndrome, anxiety, and depression.

Balwani vehemently denied the allegations, citing them as the reason for his request for separate proceedings, which were granted. Coopersmith writes that Holmes’ allegations “to establish her innocence would require him to defend himself not only against the government’s case, but also against its allegations, because their allegations are so inflammatory that they cannot be refuted before the jury.” “

Holmes’ attorneys also asked for their trials to be segregated, saying she “could not be around him without suffering physical hardship”.

“She argues that if tried with Mr. Balwani, she will likely experience stress and physical discomfort that will manifest itself visually so that she will not appear in her true sense to the jury.”

In 2020, Davila agreed that they would be tried separately. The files were unsealed in response to a motion from editor Dow Jones, a move that Holmes and Balwani’s defense lawyers attempted to block until after the jury’s selection.

Separating the processes is a strategy that, in the opinion of many legal analysts, was an important decision for Holmes.

“It allows a defendant to point an empty chair in court,” said Barbara McQuade, a former US attorney and legal analyst with NBC News. “To tell the jury that this is the real bad guy here, it was all him, and to ask the jury to understand this story and to acquit Elizabeth Holmes.”

McQuade said this can go either way, adding, “Of course, in his trial where another jury is negotiating the case, he could do the same to her. Point to her empty chair and say it isn’t Sunny , it was Elizabeth. ” . “

Holmes and Balwani’s lawyers did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The jury selection for Holmes’ trial begins on Tuesday.

– CNBC’s Scott Cohn contributed to this report.

Gardner Minshew commerce particulars: why Eagles traded for Jaguars QB

The Jaguars and Eagles made an interesting deal early Saturday when Jacksonville sent third year quarterback Gardner Minshew to Philadelphia for a conditional selection for round six.

Minshew accumulated 12 and eight starts for the Jaguars in 2019 and career, Minshew completed 62.9 percent of his passes for 5,530 yards and 37 touchdowns at 11 interceptions.

Then why would the jaguars move him? Even if the new trainer Urban Meyer relies on Lawrence as a starter, Minshew could have been a backup with valuable starting experience in an emergency. Also, why did the Eagles act for him, considering that Jalen Hurts is the alleged starter while Joe Flacco looked impressive as a backup?

Sporting News breaks down the trade and how it makes sense for both teams:

MORE: 10 NFL QBs with the most to prove in 2021, from Carson Wentz to Tua Tagovailoa

When the Eagles announced that they had traded for Minshew, they also unofficially disclosed why they made him the third quarterback on the team: They also fired third-stringer quarterback Nick Mullens.

Mullens didn’t play particularly well for the Eagles last season, just two and a half months after signing a one-year deal with the team after joining the free agency through the 49ers. (He was supposed to be a restricted free agent, but San Francisco didn’t make him an offer so he could sign with any team). His game clearly did not instill confidence in coach Nick Sirianni.

Since Flacco would have signed a $ 3.5 million one-year deal for the 2020 season, Philadelphia would have had to re-sign him or another quarterback in 2022 due to the deep-term backup in Philadelphia.

According to John Clark of NBC Sports Philly, trading the Eagles was a profound move for Minshew, made with the knowledge that COVID-19 is still an ongoing issue for multiple teams, with an additional regular season game to be taken into account got to:

Source confirms Eagles traded for QB Gardner Minshew

I was told that Jalen Hurts is the starter, Eagles like Joe Flacco, and made that trade for depth at QB with a 17 game season and Covid times pic.twitter.com/xuVtUWAQGm

– John Clark (@JClarkNBCS) August 28, 2021

The question, then, is why did Jacksonville Minshew act? It’s possible Meyer didn’t want to create a situation where some players were still in Minshew’s camp while Lawrence got more ready to play (the Dolphins faced a similar situation in 2020 with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tua Tagovailoa). It is clear, however, that Lawrence’s cap is significantly higher and he would have overtaken Minshew for the starting position anyway.

Since Meyer is all-in with Lawrence, he’s likely traded Minshew – who couldn’t take advantage of the preseason’s “competition” – so he could use the following tips to further build his team with players he chose. According to a report by Ian Rapoport, the conditional six-round pick could become the five-round pick if Minshew participates in 50 percent of the snaps in at least three games. While this is unlikely to happen to both Hurts and Flacco before him, it still leads to picks for Meyer and Co.

Webb’s testing is full. Now the journey to the launch website begins.

It’s finally getting real for the James Webb Space Telescope. Engineers are now preparing the long-awaited groundbreaking telescope for transport to its launch site at the European spaceport in French Guiana.

“NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has reached a major turning point on its path to launch with the final integration and testing of the observatory,” said Gregory Robinson, Webb’s program director at NASA headquarters. “We have a hugely dedicated workforce that has brought us to the finish line and we are delighted that Webb is ready to take off and will soon be embarking on this scientific journey.”

Final tests of the space telescope were conducted at Northrop Grumman’s facilities in California to ensure that the complex, foldable observatory in space was performing as planned. The packaging and shipping operations have now begun, with precise steps required to ensure a safe journey along the California coast through the Panama Canal to French Guiana on the northeast coast of South America.

“We are pleased that all tests for Webb have been completed and thank all teams for their excellent work,” said Günther Hasinger, ESA Director of Science, in a press release. “We are very pleased that all the items necessary for the launch are now coming together at Europe’s spaceport.”

During transportation operations, teams at Webb’s Mission Operations Center (MOC) at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore will continue to run simulations for the launch and operation of the telescope. Recently, the team reviewed the operations center and network and fully demonstrated that it was able to seamlessly send commands to the spacecraft. Now the team will focus on conducting launch rehearsals to prepare for all sorts of contingencies of things that could go wrong during launch and separation from the Ariane 5 launcher – but hopefully the right way.

Completing this test marks the team’s completion on a long series of checkpoints designed to ensure Webb’s 18 hexagonal mirrors are prepared for a long life of profound discovery. Credits: NASA / Chris Gunn

As we reported earlier this year, the normally reliable Ariane 5 struggled on two earlier launches in 2020 that experienced unexpected vehicle accelerations as the fairing separated from the rocket. The fairing is the nose cone used to protect a spacecraft’s payload during launch and acceleration through Earth’s atmosphere.

Arianespace officials said the source of the problem has been found and corrective action has been taken. In fact, an Ariane 5 successfully launched two commercial communications satellites on July 30, 2021, the rocket’s first flight in almost a year and the first of two planned missions before Webb can be sent into space on its mission.

The next Ariane 5 launch is scheduled for a number of satellites (the SES-17 and Syracuse-4A satellites) in September at the earliest and, if successful, the launch for James Webb may follow, probably no earlier than late November. NASA, ESA and Arianespace have not given a planned launch window and, for security reasons, have not announced exactly when Webb will begin its trip to South America. However, below is an infographic with all of the steps required to get started:

Timeline of the Webb launch at the European spaceport. Photo credit: ESA.

The upper stage of Ariane 5, which Webb will bring into space, is already on its way to the European spaceport.

After launch and a 26-minute drive into orbit, the spacecraft disconnects from the rocket and its solar array is automatically deployed. If all goes well, the spacecraft will fly to the second Lagrange point, or L2, where it actually orbits the sun 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. This orbit allows the telescope to stay in line with the earth as it moves around the sun, and allows the satellite’s large sun visor to protect the telescope from the light and heat of the sun and earth (and moon) . It takes about 30 days to reach L2. It will take approximately six months to deploy and test the entire telescope, with several nail-biting events going smoothly, including opening the sun visor and mirror and setting up the antenna so that all of the data can be sent back to Earth. Webb will go through an action-packed six month commissioning phase. Moments after a 26-minute ride aboard the Ariane 5 launcher.

Ronaldo’s return to Man United has shocked the soccer world. Here is why

And so he’s back. Perhaps as interesting as the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United is how it happened. As early as May, many of us were speculating about how it might make sense.

Juventus didn’t exactly offer it, but with projected losses of more than € 300million over two years, they had made it pretty clear that if he wanted to leave they would pay a fee equal to his amortized residual value (€ 28million … the game now belongs to the accountants like everyone else), they wouldn’t get in his way. His contract was still a year long, an extension would be very difficult and the club wanted to build up again through the youth.

– Man United confirm sensational Ronaldo return
– Ronaldo is back in Manchester! This is how social media reacted
– Icons that have returned to the teams that made them famous

Meanwhile, Manchester United had the money to sign him – and pay his hefty wage – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer liked the idea of a seasoned goalscorer who could add momentum to the attack and serve as a role model for younger players. So much so that the club had signed Edinson Cavani to a one-year contract that was about to expire.

If Ronaldo wanted to leave Juventus, Man United was a natural target and Cavani’s departure would help offset part of his salary (at least a third).

Unless it didn’t happen. On May 10, United exercised their option to give Cavani another year, effectively closing the door to an early move for Ronaldo … or so we thought. Because out of the blue we found that Ronaldo wanted a move.

2 relatives

There was evidence even though it only started less than two weeks ago. Edu Aguirre, a journalist who is very close to Ronaldo (so much so that his Instagram feed includes pictures of them on vacation together) said Real Madrid wanted to bring him back. This led to a rare public denial via Twitter from her manager Carlo Ancelotti and a lengthy post from Ronaldo himself talking about how focused he was and how he “can’t let people keep messing with it”. [his] Names. “(Speaking of names, he mentioned that of his team at the time, Juventus, a total of zero times.)

Then, earlier this week, Real Madrid made a 160m offer (at PSG, of course, he would have teamed up with Lionel Messi, the football equivalent of a Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal doubles team or Magic Johnson who joins Larry Bird .)

Ronaldo won three Premier League titles and one Champions League title for the first time at Manchester United, among others. What is he going to do this time? Laurence Griffiths / Getty Images

It got very real on Thursday morning. Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes traveled to Turin to tell Juventus that Ronaldo wanted to leave, adding that he was about to close a deal with Manchester City. Juventus accepted this and spun the line that the renovation might come a year earlier. They reminded Mendes that they would need a $ 28 million bid from City and he told them to expect a bid in the next 24 hours. Mendes then hopped into a Cessna and flew to Paris, where he spent the afternoon.

We don’t know if he met with PSG after landing to see if that was an option in case they decide to let Mbappe go. They politely said Ronaldo was not in their plans but then they had also said that Mbappe was not available and that they had no plans to negotiate with Real Madrid even though they were speaking to the Spanish club at the time.

Read the latest news and reactions from Gabriele Marcotti, Senior Writer at ESPN FC.

When facts change, plans change, and Mendes, who has been one of the top agents in the world for two decades, understands this better than most. He traveled to Paris to cover his bases and when he checked in with Manchester United on Thursday he covered another base. This happened even while he was still in contact with Manchester City waiting for them to make an official offer to Juventus.

By noon in Europe on Friday, the mood had turned. In his pre-Arsenal press conference, Man City manager Pep Guardiola said: “Cristiano will decide where he wants to play, not Manchester City or me … It seems far away at the moment.” It felt like a “take it or leave it” statement. Perhaps the catch was with the fee Juventus was asking: City was reportedly unwilling to bid more than € 15m. Maybe it was because of Ronaldo’s contract: at Juventus he earned 31 million in the Premier League.

Minutes later and a few miles away, Solskjaer opened the door in his own pre-game media duties: “I didn’t think Cristiano would leave Juventus. If he ever wants to move away from Juventus, he’ll know we’re here … Let’s see what happens to Cristiano. “

play

0:30

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo would return in April 2019 talking to children.

When a manager says this openly – especially a prudent guy like Solskjaer – you know something is imminent. Within minutes, City notified the media that they were out of the Ronaldo sweepstakes, and a few hours later, United’s official account tweeted this.

It will be time to analyze and judge if it is the right move for Cristiano and United, but for now you are stunned by the mechanics of how it came about.

First and foremost is the timing itself. Why did Cristiano wait so long? It’s not like anything happened in the past week that suddenly made Ronaldo leave Juventus. The club’s financial situation did not suddenly deteriorate in mid-August. Ronaldo didn’t suddenly meet Max Allegri after two years and thought: “Nah, I don’t really want to play for this guy.” It wasn’t as if Juve had promised him to acquire a top-class supporting cast for him, and so he wanted to jump: He knew very well that there would be no significant newcomers apart from Manuel Locatelli.

Dan Thomas is joined by Craig Burley, Shaka Hislop, and others to bring you the latest highlights and discuss the biggest storylines. Stream on ESPN + (US only).

In fact, it feels that this has as much to do with opportunities elsewhere as it does with wanting to leave.

There were only four viable destinations in terms of those who could afford it: Real Madrid, PSG, Man City and Man United. Madrid want Mbappe and PSG want to keep Mbappe. Mendes knew that while Mbappe is very good, he can’t play for two teams at the same time and that whoever didn’t win Mbappe might have an interest in Ronaldo. Likewise, Man City, which Harry Kane had missed, was an option.

Man united? They were there all the time, and the mere fact that they hadn’t moved sooner for him, when it might have made more sense athletically, didn’t mean much. Ego is a part of football and maybe surpassing a City-related goal played a role. And that’s the other notable part of this story because Ronaldo isn’t the kind of player you’d expect to be bought around; You expect him to be courted and seduced by clubs, you expect wars for his attention. Instead, we let Mendes go door to door.

This is one of the greatest players in the history of the game. He is 36 years old, but last season (29) he scored more league goals than all but two players (Robert Lewandowski with 41 for Bayern Munich and Lionel Messi with 30 for Barcelona) in Europe’s Big Five leagues. And he won the Golden Shoe at the European Championship not six years ago, but six weeks ago. Everyone he’s ever worked with – even those who don’t like him – raves about his fitness and professionalism.

But here we are. In the end, he moves almost in hindsight for the last week of the transfer window, with his agent working around the clock.

It’s not a criticism of Ronaldo. It’s a sign that for many clubs, reality (the kind of COVID) is biting. The fact that agents who were once able to manipulate clubs and players as if they were little toy soldiers on a map can no longer do so as easily as they used to.

My colleague Paolo Condo brought up the idea that the age of “player power” and superstars who always prevail might be over or at least put on hold. Messi wanted to stay at Barcelona (and allegedly they wanted to keep him): he didn’t get his way. Kane wanted to move from Tottenham to Man City: he didn’t get his way. Gianluigi Donnarumma wanted a massive salary increase from Milan or a move to Juventus: he failed to prevail and now supports Keylor Navas at PSG and earns little more than what Milan offered him.

And now Ronaldo. He got his move, yes, but only at the very end of the summer and after some Herculean efforts on the part of his agent.

Perhaps it is far-fetched to say that we have moved away from the era of the almighty individual mega-star. That said, Man City has tons of great players but no dominating superstar (unless you count Guardiola), and they won nearly four times that last season. You can make a similar argument for Chelsea, who are winning the Champions League with their alternating front men, or for Liverpool, where it’s hard to pinpoint an individual standout. Atletico Madrid of course won LaLiga without an A listener and if Antonio Conte were here he would tell you that Inter won Serie A through the strength of the collective (and, of course, brilliant coaching).

What about PSG? Yes, they had two megastars on the A-list with Neymar and Mbappe, and no, they didn’t win the league. Be that as it may, and no matter how much effort it took, Ronaldo can now write more chapters in Manchester United’s history after 12 years.

Former Theranos workers are nonetheless shaken as Elizabeth Holmes trial looms

Elizabeth Holmes, founder and former chief executive officer of Theranos, center, exits U.S. federal court in San Jose, California on May 6, 2021.

Nina Riggio | Bloomberg | Getty Images

He was the father of newborn twins who wanted to make a difference in healthcare.

Now, with Elizabeth Holmes’ criminal fraud trial set to begin Tuesday, Micah Nies is tired of “being siloed” and is breaking his silence.

Nies is one of four former Theranos employees interviewed by CNBC ahead of Holmes’ trial. The others, who did not want their names used, say they are still afraid of retribution from Holmes and former Theranos president, Sunny Balwani.

“The fear is real,” Nies said. “Even several years later. The atmosphere was so toxic you would hear the stories of people being disappeared. There was always this fear of retribution and afterward you carry it with you.”

Holmes and Balwani have pled not guilty to a dozen counts of wire fraud and conspiracy. Balwani’s trial won’t take place until next year. Attorneys for Holmes and Balwani did not return requests for comment.

Nies was hired at Theranos in March 2015 for $185,000 a year to be the senior manager of customer service and call center operations at the company’s headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif., according to an acceptance letter he shared with CNBC. Theranos recruited him at age 41 from another healthcare company in San Diego.

He reported directly to Balwani, who he called “the king manipulator.” His job was to solve problems but he said he soon realized the real problem was Theranos itself.

Micah Nies, a former Theranos employee, with his twin sons.

Micah Nies

“There was always something fishy or peculiar going on,” Nies said. “It was very clear they were trying to hide something. Every morning I woke up and wondered what they were going to spin today, while I was trying to find my exit strategy.”

Another employee who worked at Theranos, who quit after it became apparent the company was what she calls a “house of cards,” asked not to be named in fear of Holmes and Balwani retaliating.

Reflecting on the upcoming trial, which has been repeatedly delayed, the former employee says she feels “sad to witness such an epic failure of proper due diligence on the part of so many people, but it’s also very predictable.”

Asked what she would tell Holmes today, she said: “You’re not dealing with someone who deals in reality. So the point of having a conversation starts to diminish in the face of someone who just sees things how they want the world to be.”

The former employees interviewed by CNBC all said they left the company disillusioned and distraught over what happened, but don’t want their careers defined by this ordeal. They each arrived at Theranos with different perspectives, but looking back say their views are crystal clear about what went on inside the company.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if either one of them turned into ‘War of the Roses,'” Nies said referring to the 1989 movie where a married couple battles over a nasty divorce. “He’s got more desperation in the sense of money and she’s got a life to look forward to now that she’s trying to recreate. The recipe is there for a blame game.”

Whether Holmes will take the stand in her own defense remains unknown. Former employees said that damage control was routine at Theranos and all agreed that Holmes is innately optimistic.

“That’s what she was good at,” Nies said. “We would get bad news and the next day she would hold a town hall and everybody’s eyes would glaze over. She’s very charismatic in the sense that she knows how to talk to people.”

And that charisma was on public display in 2015 on CNBC’s “Mad Money.” The day after the Wall Street Journal published an explosive report about the Theranos blood-testing technology not working as advertised, Holmes appeared on the program to defend her company.

“This is what happens when you work to change things,” Holmes told host Jim Cramer. “First they think you’re crazy, then they fight you, then you change the world.”

Nies, who left Theranos after just one year, stays in touch with some of his former colleagues. He says they “just want to put it in the rear view mirror. Hopefully they find her guilty, Sunny too, and we all just move on. But a lot of us are skeptical that’ll happen since she’s part of this elite group.”

Another high-level employee, who asked not to be named because he may be called to testify as a witness, said he feels “it’s taken a long time, we were really hoping this would be done sooner. Most of us who worked there are anxious for it to be over.”

And a former Theranos executive who was close to Holmes told CNBC, “It didn’t have to end this way. She could have chosen any number of off-ramps and changed the trajectory of the company. But like the movie Speed, she would never take her foot off the gas pedal.”

The long-awaited trial, which will be one of the most watched financial fraud cases in recent history, is bringing back a rush of emotions for those who also believed they could make a difference.

“There’s definitely an unspoken bond between all of us, we went through it together,” Nies said. “Those of us who left Theranos before it all crumbled down, we’re on the other side of it now with good careers. It’s cathartic to speak about.”

Considerations about local weather change within the UK at close to report highs – watts with that?

Guest contribution by Eric Worrall

According to Ipsos MORI, UK climate change concerns have peaked as the BBC and establishment’s relentless campaign to scare ordinary people with stories of bushfires and heat waves is paying off.

Public concern about climate change and pollution is doubling to record levels

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Ipsos MORI’s Issues Index for August 2021 shows that public concern about the environment has increased by 16 percentage points compared to last month’s index.

August 27, 2021

  • A third of the UK public see the environment and climate change as a major issue for the country, making it the second largest issue
  • COVID-19 remains the top concern, but concerns continue to decline
  • Public concern about the economy, the NHS and education is also falling from the levels recorded in July

The Ipsos MORI Issues Index from August 2021 shows that spontaneous public concern about the environment has increased by 16 percentage points since July. 32 percent cite climate change and pollution as a major issue for the UK, making it the second top concern for the country. Fieldwork was carried out between August 6 and 13, including the publication of the International Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report.

This is the second highest environmental concern since it was included as an option in the survey in 1988: in July 1989, when Heathrow recorded its highest temperature since 1976, 35% identified environmental problems as a matter of concern.

COVID-19 remains the UK’s biggest problem, but only 40% cite it as a big problem this month – eight points down from July and 35 percentage points below its highest level this year (75% in January).

I am worried about my friends in the UK.

With a net contribution of 1.1% of global CO2 emissions, nothing Britain does to the British people can make a real difference to global CO2.

At the international level, the Biden government is fighting with sustained resistance to its planned climate spending in the trillions of dollars. Other nations like Australia are openly defying the globalist urge to shut down coal, and China is continuing as before, paying lip service, but expanding coal capacity as quickly as it can build the new power plants.

COP26 is a monumental failure, you can already smell the panic.

After the failure of COP26, what will UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson do to save his credibility with UK voters as a climate saver?

Soaring UK public support for climate change and an unexpected slight improvement in public finances could encourage BoJo to try the impossible – tough climate taxes, hydrogen economy, offshore wind, petrol bans, the whole bunch of losing strategies to reduce carbon emissions.

The tremendous cost this will place on ordinary Britons, already facing rising energy poverty, could make the lives of the poor in Britain utterly unbearable.

Packers’ Aaron Rodgers not fearful about placing strain on Randall Cobb: ‘We’d like him, 100 %’

Aaron Rodgers may not be sticking with the Packers beyond the 2021 campaign, but he at least managed to put a drama-filled offseason behind him. Green Bay offered a few concessions to Rodgers to presuade him that returning was a better option than skipping training camp (or even the entire season), including addressing Rodgers’ frustration with the organization’s culture and decision-making process.

The three-time NFL MVP flexed his power by requesting a trade for Randall Cobb, who played for the Packers from 2011-18 before single-season stints with the Cowboys and Texans. Rodgers’ wish was granted, as Green Bay sent a 2022 sixth-round pick to Houston in exchange for the veteran wide receiver.

MORE: Rodgers reveals just how close he was to retiring

During Wednesday’s edition of “The Pat McAfee Show,” guest host and former Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk asked Rodgers if he had placed too much pressure on Cobb because he pushed for the move. Rodgers jokingly dismissed Hawk as a “pundit” with bad takes before heaping praise upon Cobb.

“There’s been so many moments throughout camp where you’re like, ‘Whoa,'” Rodgers said. “Like, ‘Whoa, that was really f—ing smart,’ or ‘Whoa, that was an amazing play,’ or ‘Wow, he’s still athletically super-gifted,’ or ‘I’ve never seen a shallow cross run that precisely.’ There’s been like one thing every single day that he’s done that a lot of people have said, ‘Wow, that’s why 12 wanted him so bad. That’s why he’s going to be an important part of what we’re doing.’ We need him, 100 percent.”

In eight seasons with Green Bay, Cobb totaled 470 receptions for 5,524 yards and 41 touchdowns. He excelled in the slot and established himself as one of Rodgers’ favorite targets.

While third-round pick Amari Rodgers has worked with the starters, it seems unlikely he will rise above Cobb on the depth chart. Aaron Rodgers was complimentary of the rookie wideout, but he has a special personal and professional connection with Cobb.

“Obviously he’s very gifted athletically, and at some point he’s going to be probably the slot receiver here,” Rodgers said. “But it’s nice having Cobb back. He’s had a great camp. We’ve got to keep him healthy this season, and [we’re] excited about what he can bring to the squad.”
