Startup unveils AI breakthrough for male fertility prognosis

According to a study by a British startup, a new algorithm can determine male fertility faster and more accurately than before Bayezian.

The breakthrough comes amid growing problems for couples trying to conceive.

A recent report by the World Health Organization estimates that one in six people worldwide is now affected by infertility. Despite the belief that it’s a “woman thing,” men now contribute about 50% of fertility problems.

In fact, the male factor has become a growing problem. Recent studies have found that Sperm count has fallen by more than 50% in the last 45 years, with a rate of decline that has doubled since 2000. Up to 7% of men are now affected by infertility diagnosisIs can be slow, expensive and inconsistent.

Crystals, nozzles and magnets – how can cooling be made more environmentally friendly?

These issues have prompted calls for better fertility testing. About 18 months ago, Bayezian was asked for help. The company, which provides data science and machine learning incubation services, applied AI to the problem.

“We consider accurate diagnosis to be a crucial tool in improving male fertility.

Bayezian searched the MHSMA dataset for a solutiona collection of sperm images from 235 patients with male infertility. Each image is labeled by experts for normal or abnormal sperm acrosome, head, vacuole, and tail, which has made it an attractive data set for machine learning studies.

Use of the recordThe research group has developed deep learning frameworks that can detect the morphology of a sperm.

According to Bayezian, their algorithm detects differences that the human eye cannot perceive. The company says it’s possible Identify sperm fertility with 96% accuracy – 2% higher than existing scientific approaches.

“This project is the perfect example of the tech-for-good approach the team is taking,” said Ed Dixon, Founder and CEO of Bayezian. “We consider accurate diagnosis to be a crucial tool in improving male fertility.”

A brown dwarf is hit by a lot radiation that it’s hotter than the Solar

Hot Jupiters are large gaseous planets that orbit their star closely. Unlike our Jupiter, which radiates more heat than it receives from the Sun, hot Jupiters receive more heat from their star than from their interior. As a result, they can have a surface temperature of 1,000 K instead of the 160 K that Jupiter has. They are among the most common types of exoplanets and are the easiest type of exoplanets to discover.

Most hot Jupiters orbit red dwarf stars, which means they receive plenty of infrared light to keep them warm. But that also means they can easily radiate heat to maintain a constant temperature. One of the most common side effects of a hot Jupiter is that its upper atmosphere tends to swell and vaporize, creating either a fluffy, low-density world or a dense world devoid of lighter elements, depending on the stage.

There are some of these worlds that have extremely hot surfaces that make them appear star-like rather than planet-like. In 2017, astronomers discovered hot Jupiter KELT-9b. It orbits a bright blue star so closely that its period is only 1.5 days. This means that the planet is tidally connected to its star and starside temperatures reach more than 4,600 K. At that temperature, the molecules in its atmosphere would dissolve, creating a high-pressure region that would propel atoms to the dark side of the planet, where they would recombine into molecules. The surface temperatures of most stars in our galaxy are below those on the stellar side of the planet. KELT-9b was thought to be the exoplanet with the highest surface temperature, but a new world even hotter has recently been discovered.

This new world orbits a star called WD 0032?317, which is not a main sequence star. It’s a white dwarf with a mass about half that of the Sun and a surface temperature of 37,000 K. That’s hot even for a white dwarf, meaning the star is likely to have crossed the main sequence less than left a million years ago. Its companion is a brown dwarf about 75 times the mass of Jupiter, so technically not a planet, but not a star either. It orbits the white dwarf so closely that its orbital period is only 2.5 hours.

The average temperatures of different exoplanets. Photo credit: Hallakoun et al

Calculating the surface temperature of this companion isn’t easy, but we know it must be very hot. White dwarfs emit light primarily in the ultraviolet range, while brown dwarfs emit primarily in the infrared. Therefore, it is much easier for the white dwarf to heat up the brown dwarf than it is for the brown dwarf to shed its thermal energy. Even a rough calculation gives a stellar temperature about as hot as the Sun.

In new work, the team used different models to determine an accurate surface temperature. The end result depends on whether the white dwarf has a core composed mostly of helium, or whether it has a core with a mixture of other elements, such as carbon. This would affect the amount of heat transferred to the brown dwarf. Based on their calculations, the brown dwarf star side likely has a surface temperature of around 8,000 K – 9,000 K. The dark side temperature is likely around 2,000 K. Compare this to the Sun’s surface temperature, which is around 5,700 K.

Moderna Seeks FDA Approval of Up to date Covid Vaccine for Fall

Modern On Thursday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration filed for approval of the biotech company’s updated Covid vaccine for the fall.

The shot is aimed at the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, the country’s dominant virus strain.

Moderna said the filing follows last week’s FDA recommendation that vaccine makers should switch their vaccinations to XBB.1.5, one of the most immune-evading Covid strains to date.

Moderna and rivals Pfizearound Novavax started developing versions of their vaccines against XBB 1.5 months before the FDA recommendation.

All three companies are expected to have vaccines available to Americans in time for the fall, pending FDA approval.

“The agility of our mRNA platform has enabled us to update Spikevax, Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, to target XBB variants quickly and with clinical precision,” Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said in a statement.

The FDA will review Moderna’s available efficacy and safety data on the vaccine to decide whether to approve it for the fall.

Preclinical trial data in mice suggest that a monovalent vaccine targeting XBB.1.5 elicited a more robust immune response against currently circulating XBB variants than the company’s approved bivalent vaccine targeting strains BA.4 and BA.5 is aimed at, according to a presentation by Moderna last week.

Clinical trial data in more than 100 people also show that the monovalent XBB.1.5 vaccine produces protective antibodies against all XBB variants. All study participants had previously received four doses of the Covid vaccine.

The US is expected to shift Covid vaccine distribution to the private sector as early as the fall. That means Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax will sell their updated vaccines directly to healthcare providers, not the government.

It’s unclear how many people will take the new vaccines.

Only about 17% of the US population has received the latest booster shots from Pfizer and Moderna since their approval in September, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Main LaLiga video games, Clasico, must-have video games for high golf equipment

  • Sam Marsden, Barcelona CorrespondentJune 22, 2023 at 9:00 am ET

LaLiga fixtures for the 2023-24 season (Stream all games live on ESPN+) were released on Thursday and the new campaign is already promising after some brisk activity in the transfer market.

While Real Madrid are looking to reclaim the title from rivals Barcelona, they have spent €103m to sign England midfielder Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund and may not be ready yet due to a €120m move for Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint -Germain is possible or Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane after star striker Karim Benzema left for Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, financially strapped Barca, who last season won the league for the first time since 2019, are getting closer to signing Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer and are looking to build on that success while balancing their balance sheets.

Atletico Madrid, who were perhaps Spain’s best side in the second half of the season under the impressive Antoine Griezmann, are hoping to break the duopoly between Barca and Madrid, as they have managed twice under Diego Simeone in the past decade.

Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Villarreal, Real Betis and Athletic Club are among the teams starting the season hoping to finish in the top four. At the other end of the spectrum, Granada, Las Palmas and Alaves have all returned to the top flight after brief stints in the second division.

Now that the games are out and managers, players and fans can – or don’t – plan their way to fame, here are the talking points.

– Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (USA)

The opening weekend

Editors Favorites

2 relatives

The new LaLiga season starts on August 12 with both Barca and Madrid starting away. Barca face a difficult journey to Getafe under Jose Bordalas, where they have often struggled in the past, and manager Xavi Hernandez complained about the length of the pitch after drawing there last season.

Madrid are also having a difficult start away at Athletic, while Atletico are up against newly promoted Granada at home. Sevilla vs Valencia and Villarreal vs Real Betis are both games to watch in the opening weekend of the season as well.

Barcelona’s Montjuic move

Barca are venturing into the unknown this season by exiting the Spotify Camp Nou while the stadium undergoes renovations. In the meantime, they will play at the Olympic Stadium in the city’s Montjuic area for around 15 months, reducing the capacity of their stadium from 100,000 to 50,000. Xavi has said it will be difficult to get used to but hopes it won’t affect the rebuild he is undertaking at the club.

First in Montjuic will be Cadiz in the second week of the season (20 August), but Barca have to play three of their first four games away. After Cadiz, ahead of September’s international break, they face challenging matches in Villarreal (27 August) and Osasuna (3 September), two teams who finished in the top seven last season.

That tough run will be followed by three out of four home games including Real Betis, Celta Vigo and Sevilla before October looks uncomfortable. At a time when meetings in the Champions League are becoming ever closer, Barca face Athletic (October 22), Madrid (October 29) and Real Sociedad (November 5) in the league.

Will Joselu be Real Madrid’s starting striker next season?

Julien Laurens and Gabriele Marcotti discuss Joselu, the new signing from Real Madrid. The 33-year-old joins the club on loan for a year.

Also Real Madrid on the way

Like Barca, Madrid also start a series of away games while work on the renovation of the Santiago Bernabeu continues. After the Athletic game, they travel to Almeria (20 August) and Celta (27 August). However, unlike Barca, they will be back at their home stadium in September when they host Getafe (September 3) in a Madrid derby.

If Madrid can get a positive result at Athletic’s San Mames in the opening weekend, they should be in good shape with those encounters ahead of the first international break. However, tougher tests await them after that as Real Sociedad and Atletico play back-to-back games in mid-September and back-to-back away games against Sevilla and Barca at the end of October.

Can Atletico build on a strong finish?

Atletico’s form in the second half of last season allowed them to move significantly closer to Madrid in the table, although they ended up just edging behind their city rivals in pursuit to finish a point behind in third place – with Barca 10 ahead them Madrid at the end. However, with 53 points from 24 games after the World Cup, they had more than anyone in LaLiga (Barca had 51), giving Simeone hope to be in the title race next year.

A home game against Granada is the perfect start to the season, but away games against Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano follow. Then it’s Sevilla at home and Valencia away before the derby against Madrid. By this point we should have a good idea of how Simeone’s side will be in shape.

The other challengers

Real Sociedad finished fourth last season and this time they have to deal with Champions League football with domestic matches but they couldn’t have asked for a better start. Girona, Celta Vigo, Las Palmas and Granada are four winnable games and there’s no reason why they can’t go into their game in Madrid (September 17) with 10 or even 12 points. Under Imanol Alguacil, they often started the season very strongly.

Under Jose Luis Mendilibar, Sevilla are also hoping to continue their upward trend. He has taken them from relegation contenders to Europa League winners – and with it a place in next season’s Champions League – but expectations are now being raised. Atletico trip aside, they will be happy with their first five games, which also include Valencia, Alaves, Girona and Las Palmas.

Villarreal, Betis and Athletic will be among the other clubs aiming to finish in the top four. Athletic could benefit from not having to play in Europe on Thursdays as Villarreal and Betis both play in the Europa League.

Why Chelsea Villarreal want Nicolas Jackson

James Olley explains Chelsea’s interest in Villarreal striker Nicolas Jackson.

Games not to be missed

Athletic Club vs Real Madrid (12 August)

A trip to San Mames always represents one of the most difficult away games for Madrid and Barca, although the level of difficulty will increase as Carlo Ancelotti’s side have to go there in the first week of the season. In his second season at the club, excitement that Ernesto Valverde can lead the Basque side back to the top of the table will be high again and a heated atmosphere will await Madrid.

Villarreal vs Barcelona (27 August)

Like Athletic, Villarreal have bothered Barcelona and Madrid in recent years, beating the latter at the Estadio de la Ceramica and narrowly losing to the Catalans last season. Adding the added spice is that former Barca coach Quique Setien is now in charge at Villarreal. He will relish the chance to gain an edge over his former employers so early in the campaign.

Atletico vs Real Madrid (September 24)

A one-sided derby has regained prominence in the last decade since Simeone took over at Atlético. The first Madrid derby of the season takes place at the start of the season and the Rojiblancos will be happy to be at home. The second leg will be played in early February.

Real Sociedad vs Athletic Club (1 Oct)

The Basque derby is one of the biggest derbies in Spain but seems particularly important this season as Athletic look to tip the balance back in their favor. La Real’s fourth-place finish and a place in the Champions League have firmly established the two-time LaLiga winners as the dominant side in northern Spain. Athletic, eight-time league champions, will want to reverse that trend. They get their first chance on October 1st in San Sebastian, the second leg in Bilbao is planned for early January.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid (29 Oct)

Arguably the biggest game in European club football, the first Clasico of the season between Barca and Madrid will take place at the end of October. It will also be the first Clasico to be played in Montjuic. It falls in gameweek 11 of the season, so Bellingham, Gundogan and all the other newcomers should be more than used to their new surroundings. The second meeting between the two giants at the Bernabeu in April could potentially decide the title.

Sevilla vs Real Betis (12 November)

In terms of atmosphere and passion, the Seville derby is in no way inferior to the Clasico and the Basque derby. The eagerness with which the anthems sound before the game gives you goosebumps. Drama often ensues on the pitch too and this year will be no different as Sevilla look to oust Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis as the city’s No. 1 under Mendilibar.

Anti-fossil gas legislation positive factors floor in UK • Do you agree?

The US has a long history of these types of anti-fossil fuel laws.

Here are some previous examples of these tactics from the US:

The continued use of lawfare by activists around the world when they fail through policy and legislation is now taking center stage in the UK.

The future of fossil fuels in the UK is in the spotlight this week, with the Horse Hill oil exploration case ending up in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. As the BBC reports, this is:

“A challenge that could mean the end of new fossil fuel projects in the UK.”

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-65965119

This case is brought by a Surrey woman, Sarah Finch, who is challenging the legality of a local oil drilling permit.

The basis of the claim lies in the consideration of “downstream emissions” when approving building permits. As the BBC calls them:

“the greenhouse gas emissions released when the oil is used.”

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-65965119

Finch argues that Surrey County Council failed to consider the impact of such emissions, which they estimate could amount to 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period.

In her argument, Finch draws an analogy, saying:

“Planning authorities say they don’t need to consider the climate impact of actually burning the oil – only the impact of drilling.” It’s like saying a chocolate cake is low in calories as long as you don’t eat it.”

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-65965119

However, in a response from Surrey County Council, a spokesman stated:

“The District Council has a duty to decide planning applications in accordance with the Development Plan, the National Planning Framework, national policy and other relevant considerations as set out in legislation and case law.”

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-65965119

You know, in democratic societies, politics is done quite normally.

As campaigners seek to halt all fossil fuel extraction, it is a legal strategy with national implications that extend beyond Surrey’s borders. Katie de Kauwe, an attorney for Friends of the Earth, noted:

“Developers are struggling with lawsuits like this because they are very concerned that when decision makers are confronted with the total carbon impact of these projects, which is the downstream emissions, they will reconsider giving them building permits.”

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-65965119

When they fail to deny drilling permits nationally, these activists try to force local governments to comply.

The importance of the case is heightened by the involvement of outside groups, who have been asked by the court to provide additional evidence. These include West Cumbria Mining, a company that recently received permission to open the UK’s first new coal mine in 40 years. The Environmental Protection Agency also intervenes for the first time, stating that it is doing so because this is the case

“Wants legal clarity on how decision makers conduct environmental impact assessments when evaluating fossil fuel projects.”

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-65965119

The Horse Hill case underscores the complexity of litigation in the power generation space. The outcome of this case could set an important precedent for how these projects will be evaluated and either given the green light or banned in the future.

A decision by the judges is expected to take three to six months.

The CDC panel recommends Pfizer and GSK syringes for adults over 60

A health worker prepares a flu shot before administering it to a resident in Los Angeles, the United States, on December 17, 2022.

Xinhua News Agency | Getty Images

An advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday recommended that adults age 60 and older receive a single dose of RSV vaccines after consulting their doctors Pfizer And GSK.

The panel said seniors should use “shared clinical decision-making,” where they work with their healthcare provider to decide how much they would benefit from vaccination.

Outgoing CDC Director Rochelle Walensky will decide whether to finalize the recommendation.

The panel’s decision brings the U.S. one step closer to opening respiratory syncytial virus vaccines to the public in the fall, when the disease usually begins to spread at higher levels.

The recommendation also comes weeks after the Food and Drug Administration approved both vaccines, making them the world’s first approved vaccines against RSV.

The virus is a common respiratory infection that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms but causes more severe cases in older adults and children. According to the CDC, 6,000 to 10,000 seniors and a few hundred children under the age of 5 die from RSV each year.

Pfizer and GSK both presented new clinical trial data to the panel on Wednesday, giving a first look at the durability of their vaccines after an RSV season. In the northern hemisphere, the season usually lasts from October to March.

A single dose of the Pfizer vaccine was 78.6% effective in preventing lower respiratory disease with three or more symptoms by the middle of a second RSV season, according to new clinical trial results presented Wednesday. This is a decrease from more than 85% at the end of the first season in older adults.

Pfizer said efficacy for less severe forms of the disease in this age group dropped from about 66% to 48.9% “midway through the second season.”

One dose of GSK’s vaccine was 78.8% effective against severe RSV disease after two seasons, compared to 94% after one season, the company said on Wednesday. Serious illness is defined as cases that make normal, daily activities impossible.

For less severe RSV disease, efficacy decreased from 82% to 67.2% over two seasons after one season.

dr Michael Melgar, a CDC medical officer who reviewed data for both vaccines, noted during a public meeting that both Pfizer and GSK still lack efficacy data for subgroups of the elderly population at highest risk for severe RSV.

Melgar said that adults ages 75 and older and those with an underlying medical condition are underrepresented in both companies’ Phase III clinical trials. Seniors with a weak immune system are completely excluded from the experiments, he said.

Both companies said studies of these populations are ongoing.

It’s still unclear how much the recordings will cost. GSK said its vaccine will be priced between $200 and $295. Pfizer said the price of his shot will range from $180 to $270.

The companies declined a price guarantee.

The shots would help the US navigate the upcoming fall RSV season after last year’s RSV season was unusually tough.

Cases of the virus in children and older adults were flooding hospitals across the country, largely because the public had stopped implementing health measures amid the Covid pandemic that had helped contain the spread of RSV.

This startup provides your speech a brand new “human-realistic” AI voice – without cost

From virtual assistants to voiceovers for audiobooks, AI speech generation has become a fast-growing field — and it’s no wonder companies are rushing to realize the technology’s potential.

Among them is the Valencia-based company Voicemod. The startup has developed an AI voice changer and soundboard software that provides instant voice-to-speech conversion. Unlike most of its competitors, the company claims to convert voices in real-time and with low latency, allowing users to converse like in real life.

According to Jaime Bosch, CEO and co-founder of Voicemod, the company trains its AI model using publicly available datasets and professional voice actors, resulting in a broad pool of voice expressions, pitches, tones and emotions. Through machine learning techniques, the model learns to understand, analyze and predict a person’s language patterns and subtleties.

“When a user speaks into our software or application, their speech input is processed in real time,” Bosch told TNW. “Our AI model then applies the learned patterns and transformations to the input, enabling instant language conversion.”

Voicemod is primarily aimed at the entertainment industry including gamers, streamers, content creators and vtubers on platforms ranging from Discord and Twitch to Zoom and WhatsApp.

In order to continue to meet the increasing demand from users for self-expression, pseudonymity and creativity on the Internet, the start-up is now launching the so-called “AI Humans” collection in addition to the 100 language options in its portfolio. Although Voicemod already offers filters for human voices, the new collection is said to be the company’s most human-realistic yet.

AI Humans is based on recordings of voice actors and consists of 20 sound avatars that differ in personality, gender and age. The roles include Joe, an 80-year-old male voice with a “raspy, sardonic tone” and Jennifer, a 25-year-old female voice with an “energetic and kind” character. Users can also adjust the pitch of each persona, changing the perception of the voice’s gender and age.

The following video can give you an idea of what these characters sound like:

“AI voices offer exciting opportunities for industries looking to foster creative exploration and self-expression, improve personalization, and foster inclusion in digital spaces,” said Bosch.

However, despite the positive effects that AI speech generation can have, the technology also comes with numerous risks. Some of these include abuse, fraud, identity theft and even voice theft, which particularly affects professional voice actors.

According to Bosch, Voicemod is actively working to mitigate these risks. For example, the company is developing watermarking technology to help platforms identify and track AI-generated voices, while implementing measures to protect the intellectual property of the voice actors it works with.

Bosch believes that AI will become “a tool” for these professionals. “What is perhaps being overlooked in these discussions is that behind every deployment of real-time voice AI, the use case that Voicemod is targeting, there is a human effectively driving the AI,” he told TNW.

Voicemod already has over 40 million desktop downloads. In the future, it will also be introduced on mobile devices and will reach millions of monthly active users. It also works on B2B partnerships with gaming companies and VR headset platforms.

The software is available for free, with the option of a paid PRO version that unlocks additional features and content.

Astronomers discover a white dwarf pulsar

When astronomers talk about the “end states” of stellar evolution, several categories come to mind: black holes, neutron stars/pulsars, and white dwarfs. What happens when a star lands in two of these states? Such is the case with a cross-genre white dwarf pulsar called J191213.72-441045.1 (J1912-4410 for short). It is part of a binary pair that includes a red dwarf star.

J1912-4410 is the size of Earth but the mass of the Sun. It’s also much cooler than the sun. It is surrounded by an incredibly strong magnetic field that contributes to its pulsar activity. It also rotates on its axis 300 times faster than Earth. In addition, it spits out some material every 5.5 minutes. This is what gives this white dwarf its “pulsar” appearance. But despite some of these properties, J1912-4410 is definitely not a neutron star. It behaves like a pulsar but looks like a white dwarf.

Understand J1912-4410

This newly discovered white dwarf pulsar is the second known object of its kind in the galaxy. The first, called AR Sco, was found in 2016 and is the prototypical white dwarf/M star pulsar. With a sample size of now two, astronomers can draw some useful conclusions about what drives them. These rapidly rotating, burned-out, highly magnetic stellar remnants illuminate their red dwarf companions with powerful beams of electrical particles and radiation. This causes the entire system to periodically lighten and fade dramatically. Why? Could the magnetic field play a role?

According to Ingrid Pelisoli of the University of Warwick, it’s not clear what creates the enhanced magnetic field on a white dwarf pulsar. “The origin of magnetic fields is a big open question in many areas of astronomy, and that’s especially true for white dwarfs,” she said. “Magnetic fields in white dwarfs can be more than a million times stronger than the Sun’s magnetic field, and the dynamo model helps explain why.” The discovery of J1912-4410 was a crucial advance in the field.”

An artist’s rendering of crystallization in a white dwarf star. The two known white dwarf pulsars may have such interiors. Photo credit: Mark Garlick / University of Warwick.

White dwarf dynamos

The white dwarf dynamo model is an attempt to answer the question: How do white dwarfs get their magnetic fields? In general, white dwarfs have fields up to a million times stronger than Earth’s. Recent studies show that the engine that creates a magnetic field in a star is likely similar to the one that creates it inside our planet. Essentially, the movements of material within an object result in electrical currents that create the magnetic fields. In white dwarfs, however, it creates a much stronger field.

Astronomers believe that electric currents are caused by convection movements in the core of the white dwarf. These convection currents are caused by heat escaping from the solidifying core. Because a white dwarf is a cooling remnant of an aging star (like the Sun), its core will eventually “crystallize” as it cools. Because of their old age, the white dwarfs should be pretty cool in both the AR Sco and J1912-4410 systems. The temperature of J1912-4410 is low enough that such crystallization could (or will soon) take place. However, that doesn’t fully explain the activity these two white dwarf pulsars are showing, so they may not be quite at that stage yet.

Illustration of the origin of magnetic fields in white dwarfs in narrow binaries (read counter-clockwise). The magnetic field is created when a crystallizing white dwarf grows away from a companion star and as a result begins to spin rapidly. When the field of the white dwarf connects with the field of the secondary star, mass transport stops for a relatively short period of time. Author: Paula Zorzi

It turns out that the M-dwarf’s star companions also play a role in the action, Pelisoli said. “Their companions should be close enough that the white dwarf’s gravitational pull has historically been strong enough to capture mass from the companion, and this causes them to spin rapidly,” she noted. “All of these predictions apply to the newly found pulsar: the white dwarf is cooler than 13,000 K, spins on its axis every five minutes, and the white dwarf’s gravitational pull has a strong impact on the companion.”

Searching for candidates for the white dwarf pulsar

In a paper describing J1912-4410, Pelisoli and her team say that binary white dwarf pulsars pose a challenge to theoretical models describing white dwarfs. Basically, they wanted to understand why they are magnetically strong and bright across the spectrum. You ask: What is the nature of the dynamo that powers these strange animals? And what’s causing the emissions that make it look so “pulsar-like”?

They examined data from multiple surveys to find candidates similar to AR Sco. “After observing a few dozen candidates, we found one that had very similar light fluctuations to AR Sco,” Pelisoli said. “Our follow-up campaign with other telescopes revealed that this system was sending a radio and X-ray signal our way about every five minutes,” Pelisoli said. “This confirmed that there are more white dwarf pulsars out there, as predicted by previous models. There were other dynamo model predictions that were confirmed by the discovery of J1912-4410.”

After confirming that J1912-4410 was a white dwarf pulsar, the team asked if the “engine” (or dynamo) was the same as AR Sco’s. If it’s similar, that’s strong confirmation that the white dwarf dynamo model works.

More data required

There is still much to be done to understand these strange star beings and many questions to be answered. Does every white dwarf pulsar have exactly the same type of binary pair? Or are there subtle differences that contribute to the activity they show? At what point in its evolution is the white dwarf in such a pair? Does evolutionary level matter, especially given the white dwarf’s cooling temperature profile?

There are challenges. It is still difficult to determine the exact temperatures for white dwarf pulsars. In addition, the very periodic emission pulses that make these white dwarfs look like pulsars need to be studied more closely.

Finally, since the companions of these stellar oddities play a role in their pulsar-like activity, astronomers want to get a better idea of their spectral types and orbits. Now that astronomers have two of these strange systems to study, they want to find more of them in our galaxy and beyond.
