A Gamma-ray Burst Disturbed the Earth’s Ionosphere

You’d think that something happening billions of light-years away wouldn’t affect Earth, right? Well, in 2002, a burst of gamma rays lasting 800 seconds actually impacted our planet. They came from a powerful and very distant supernova explosion. Its gamma-ray bombardment disturbed our planet’s ionosphere and activated lightning detectors in India.

This particular gamma-ray burst (GRB) occurred in a galaxy almost 2 billion light-years away (and took two billion years to reach us). Not only did ground-based detectors record the bombardment, but satellites sensitive to high-energy outbursts “saw” it, too. That included the European Space Agency’s International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) mission. It typically records gamma-ray bursts on a daily basis, but this one—named GRB 221009A—outshone all the rest.

GRBs this strong happen (on average) about once every 10,000 years, so this was one that caught everyone’s attention. “It was probably the brightest gamma-ray burst we have ever detected,” says Mirko Piersanti, University of L’Aquila, Italy, and lead author of a paper analyzing the event.

How The Gamma-ray Burst Affected the Ionosphere

Most of the time, radiation from the Sun bombards our planet. That’s often strong enough to affect the ionosphere. That’s an atmospheric layer that bristles with electrically charged gases called plasma. It stretches from around 50 km to 950 km in altitude above the surface. There’s a “top-side ionosphere” (which lies above 350 km) and a “bottom-side ionosphere”) which lies below that. Scientists are pretty familiar with how the Sun treats this region of the atmosphere, particularly during periods of heavy solar activity.

This GRB blast triggered instruments generally reserved for studying the immense explosions in the Sun’s atmosphere known as solar flares. “Notably, this disturbance impacted the very lowest layers of Earth’s ionosphere, situated just tens of kilometers above our planet’s surface, leaving an imprint comparable to that of a major solar flare,” says Laura Hayes, research fellow and solar physicist at ESA. That imprint basically was an increase in ionization in the bottom-side ionosphere. It left an imprint in low-frequency radio signals that move between Earth’s surface and the lowest levels of the ionosphere. “Essentially, we can say that the ionosphere ‘moved’ down to lower altitudes, and we detected this in how the radio waves bounce along the ionosphere,” explained Laura.

Gamma Ray Bursts in the Data

Past GRBs bothered the bottom-side ionosphere but didn’t always disturb the topside. Scientists just assumed that by the time it reached Earth, the blast from a GRB didn’t have the “oomph” to change that part of the ionosphere. GRB 221009A proved that idea wrong. Thanks to data from the orbiting China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES), scientists saw a strong disturbance in the upper ionosphere. It created a strong electric field variation and was the first time scientists saw this connected to a GRB. The result is the first-ever top-side ionospheric measurement of electric field variations triggered by a gamma-ray outburst at cosmic distances.

INTEGRAL and other spacecraft continually record GRBs from around the Universe. Have they all affected our ionosphere in some way? Is there a way to find out? Now that scientists know what ionospheric effects to look for, they can search the data to find answers. Data from INTEGRAL, and CSES will be particularly useful. They should be able to correlate it with other GRBs seen since 2018. That’s when CSES was launched.

Evidence of ionospheric disturbances from GRBs goes back as far as 1988. That’s when the effects of a 1983 gamma-ray burst were first reported. Scientists now have an array of ground-based and space-based detectors—such as Swift, Fermi, MAXI, AGILE, INTEGRAL, and CSES—gave strong detections of the emissions from GRB221009A.

Implications for Future GRB Effects on Earth

This kind of disturbance from a very distant event poses a question: what would happen if such an explosion happened “closer to home”? A supernova in our own galaxy, for example, releasing a huge burst of gamma rays, could very well “reach out and touch” Earth in a drastic way. “There has been a great debate about the possible consequences of a gamma-ray burst in our own galaxy,” says Mirko Piersanti.

For one thing, a close-by and strong GRB would have drastic effects on our ionosphere, much stronger than a typical solar flare. It could also do some significant damage to the ozone layer (which provides a protective shield against radiation from the Sun). That would allow a lot more ultraviolet (UV) to reach the surface than we’re accustomed to experiencing. It’s possible (although not proven) that some of Earth’s past extinction events could be related to an increase in UV radiation on the surface.

Gamma-ray Bursters and Extinctions

Earth’s ozone layer is a first-line defense mechanism against radiation, which is why people stopped using gases such as chlorofluorocarbons. They were destroying the ozone layer, allowing in more UV radiation. This affected the atmosphere as well as people, plants, and animals. At least one research paper looked at ozone depletion by GRBs by studying what happens over the polar regions. Increased UV radiation produces changes in the middle atmosphere, including the creation of ground-level ozone, which can damage life in high concentrations. A burst that sent radiation into the south polar regions is suggested as one reason that the Ordovician extinction happened around 445 million years ago. An estimated 85 percent of species alive at that time were wiped out.

If a nearby GRB was involved, that might explain the Ordovician event and may offer insight into other mass extinctions. It’s not far-fetched to think that some of them may have had cosmic triggers. Those could have affected life on Earth more powerfully than the two-billion-year-old bombardment from GRB 221009A.

Cigna, Humana shares fall after report health-care giants may merge

Shares of Cigna and Humana slid Wednesday after a report that the two health-care giants are in talks to merge.

A Cigna spokesperson did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on the report from The Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter. A Humana spokesperson declined to comment.

The companies are discussing a stock-and-cash deal that could be finalized by the end of this year, the people told the Journal. 

A merger would be a mega deal. Cigna’s market value sat at roughly $77 billion on Wednesday and Humana’s was nearly $60 billion, making them two of the nation’s largest health insurers.

Shares of Cigna closed 8% lower Wednesday, while Humana’s stock closed more than 5% lower.

The rumored deal comes after reports earlier this month that Cigna was exploring a sale of its Medicare Advantage business, which manages government health insurance for people age 65 and older. A Cigna spokesperson at the time said the company does not comment on “rumors or speculation.” 

Some analysts have suggested that a potential combination with Humana could be a reason for Cigna to offload its Medicare Advantage business. Doing away with that business could potentially temper antitrust concerns for such a merger, Scott Fidel, health care stock analyst at Stephens, wrote in a note earlier this month, according to STAT News. 

“We would see this action being one component of a potential pursuit of Humana as an acquisition target, with the divestiture being a proactive move to reduce antitrust risk,” Fidel said.

Settlement in place for on line casino mogul to purchase Mavericks

The Adelson and Dumont families of the Las Vegas Sands casino have “entered into binding purchase agreements to acquire majority ownership and the right to serve as Governor of the Dallas Mavericks,” according to a statement released Wednesday.

The families are targeting a closing of the transaction by the end of 2023, subject to satisfaction of customary closing conditions and approval by the NBA board of governors, the statement said.

“The Dallas Mavericks is one of the world’s most successful and recognizable sports franchises,” the statement read, in part. “The team has won an NBA championship, has a long history of attracting international superstars and has been supported by a dedicated and passionate fanbase and leadership group led by Mark Cuban.

“The Adelson and Dumont families are honored to have the opportunity to be stewards of this great franchise. Through our commitment and additional investment in the team, we look forward to partnering with Mark Cuban to build on the team’s success and legacy in Dallas and beyond.”

The agreement would be in the valuation range of $3.5 billion and take weeks for the league to process, according to The Associated Press.

Cuban will maintain a stake in the franchise and continue to have control of basketball operations, sources told ESPN on Tuesday night. According to an SEC filing, the Adelson family is selling almost $2 billion in stock in the Las Vegas Sands Corp., “to fund the purchase of a majority interest in a professional sports franchise pursuant to a binding purchase agreement, subject to customary league approvals.”

The filing identified Miriam Adelson, a medical doctor and widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, and the Miriam Adelson Trust as sellers, but it didn’t specify a team, league or location.

If the entirety of the $2 billion goes toward the purchase, it would mean the Adelson family could be acquiring at least 57% of the NBA team — based on the $3.5 billion valuation.

The Sands group, led by Miriam Adelson and her son-in-law and company president, Patrick Dumont, has previously had discussions with Cuban about building a casino entertainment district in Dallas that would include a new arena for the Mavericks. Those plans would require gambling to become legal in Texas, for which Cuban has lobbied state politicians.

“The goal is to win and to have a team that proudly represents the greater DFW area and serves as a strong and valuable member of the local community,” the statement from the Adelson and Dumont families said. “We believe that with this partnership and our commitment to the team, the community and the fans, the future is bright for the Dallas Mavericks.”

Cuban, 65, has owned the Mavs since 2000, when he purchased a majority share in the franchise for $285 million. He recently announced he was leaving the popular business TV program “Shark Tank” after its 16th season next year.

Titan Dragonfly is Go!…. for Section C

The surface exploration of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, just got one step closer to reality as NASA’s much-anticipated Dragonfly mission recently received approval from the powers that be to advance to Phase C, which is designated as Final Design and Fabrication, according to NASA’s Systems Engineering Handbook. This comes after the Dragonfly team successfully completed all the requirements for Phase B in March 2023, also known as the Preliminary Design Review or Preliminary Design and Technology Completion in the NASA Systems Engineering Handbook.

“The Dragonfly team has successfully overcome a number of technical and programmatic challenges in this daring endeavor to gather new science on Titan,” said Dr. Nicola Fox, who is the associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters in Washington DC. “I am proud of this team and their ability to keep all aspects of the mission moving toward confirmation.”

Like all space missions, Dragonfly has undergone an extensive process after submitting its mission proposal in 2018 and officially being selected in June 2019 as part of NASA’s New Frontiers program, and hopefully launching just a few years from now. This process includes Concept Studies (Pre-Phase A), Concept and Technology Development (Phase A), Preliminary Design and Technology Completion (Phase B), Final Design and Fabrication (Phase C), System Assembly, Integration & Test, Launch & Checkout (Phase D), Operations and Sustainment (Phase E), and Closeout (Phase F).

With Phase C now underway, the Dragonfly team is working on a launch readiness date of July 2028, which NASA announced today it pushed back from June 2027 at its Outer Planet Assessment Group meeting due to uncertainty in the mission’s budget going forward. While NASA had previously requested a reduction of 18 percent in funding for Dragonfly for fiscal year 2024 compared to fiscal year 2023, the agency stated at the time they had still planned to keep the launch readiness date of June 2027, and was already pushed back from 2026, which was the original launch readiness date when the mission was approved in 2019.

Assuming no additional launch delays will occur, Dragonfly will embark on a six-year journey to Titan with an anticipated landing date of sometime in 2034 with a targeted landing site of the “Shangri-La” dune fields located just south of Titan’s equator. These dune fields mirror the dune fields in Namibia in southern Africa and is also near where the European Space Agency’s Huygens probe landed on Titan in January 2005, as it landed in the western region of Shangri-La. After exploring Shangri-La through a series of flights spanning 8 kilometers (5 miles) each, Dragonfly is planned to travel to Selk crater where it is expected to examine the crater to confirm previous evidence of past liquid water and potentially complex organics, or the building blocks of life. The Dragonfly team anticipates the spacecraft will have approximately 3.3 years of science operations during its time on Saturn’s largest moon and explore between 25 to 30 unique sites.

While Dragonfly is slated to be the first aircraft on Titan and the first to conduct a powered flight on any moon, it will not be the first powered flight on another planetary body outside of the Earth. This prestigious honor goes to NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, which landed on Mars in February 2021 with NASA’s Perseverance rover and performed the first powered flight on another world in April of that same year.

How will the Dragonfly mission continue to progress and what will it teach us about Titan and its prospects for life in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science!

This could possibly be the way forward for BBQ

Hailing from South Africa, I like to think of myself as a bit of a barbecue virtuoso. Come rain or shine, most weekends I’ll be out in my backyard, tongs in hand, manning the grill like a meat-addicted maniac (guilty as charged). 

So when someone suggested I try the world’s first plant-based ribs, adorned with edible vegan bones, you can imagine I was more than a little sceptical.  

The ‘ribs’ in question were made by Slovenian food tech startup Juicy Marbles. The company says it wants to recreate the “shared sense of nostalgia” and “primal joys” of eating ribs — but without the negative environmental impact. 

And the vegan bones? Well, apparently, they’re just for a laugh.

“To some, bones from plants may be an ideological provocation, but we shouldn’t take these things too seriously,” says co-founder Vladimir Mićković. “It’s just fun from every angle. Bones invite you to eat with your hands, to tear off succulent chunks of meat, and share that indulgence with the whole table.”

While the idea of replacing a succulent steak with a hunk of soy protein didn’t exactly tickle my tastebuds, it did niggle my conscience. You see, dear reader, perhaps greater than my hankering for flesh, is my love for our planet. And, unfortunately, the two don’t really align. 

Spurred on by climate guilt, I decided to give the imitation ribs a try. So, I fired up the grill and cooked them the same way I’d prepare pork ribs — over hot coals and smothered with sticky, sweet basting sauce. Yum!

Being a distinguished TNW reporter, I was lucky enough to be sent one of the first packs for free. (The vegan ribs will launch for regular purchase on the company’s webshop in early 2024).   

Founded in 2020, Juicy Marbles is perhaps best known for creating the world’s first marbled plant-based steak. Our resident senior reporter (and vegetarian) Thomas Macaulay already tested these last year and was, perhaps predictably, satisfied. But would the startup’s latest offering really indulge the taste buds of a savage carnivore?    

Upon delivery, my first impression was that the ribs looked pretty similar to the real thing — the addition of ‘bones’ and beetroot juice (for colour) definitely helps with the aesthetic.  

Encouraged, I began prepping them for the ‘braai’ (what we call BBQ in my homeland). Overall I was quite impressed with how these plant-based ribs held up on the grill. The outer layer crispened to perfection, and generally, the rack looked delicious — although it did begin to break apart towards the end. Total cook time was around 10 minutes. 

The taste test

 As advertised, the ‘meat’ is succulent and flakes off the ‘bone’ with ease. But it has more of the texture of pulled pork than pork ribs. Minor qualm there. 

The taste was decent — it reminded me somewhat of other soya-based products I’ve tried but with more meaty substance. This is probably thanks to Juicy Marbles’ patent-pending 3D assembly system which layers the proteins into linear fibres, which mimic the muscle structures of meat. The ribs also did a good job of absorbing the spices and marinade. 

As for a convincing replacement for a rack of pork ribs? I’m not so sure.   

The spoonfuls of sunflower oil added to the soya protein simply cannot replace the deliciousness of real pig fat. And the flavour profile feels unidimensional compared to the real thing. 

My biggest gripe however was how stuffed they make you feel — these plant-based ribs hit your stomach like a tonne of bricks. The high soya protein and oil content are probably to blame for that.

And what about the edible vegan bones you ask? Well the bones, which apparently have the same protein content as beef jerky, are purportedly meant to be fried or baked as a crispy snack. Maybe I did something wrong, but after 10 minutes in the air fryer, my bones still remained chewy — perhaps edible, but definitely not enjoyable. Nevertheless, they remain a cool addition, even if just for show. 

Sharing is caring

Juicy Marbles says it wants to recreate joys of eating meat with others, and that’s where I think these bone-in ribs really hit the mark. I’ve often felt like vegans or vegetarians are excluded from the shared pleasures of a BBQ simply because they don’t devour animal protein. But plant-based whole cuts could unite us all around the fire.

“Anyone cutting down on meat can probably confirm that the hardest part is not missing meat’s flavour, but feeling excluded from cultural traditions,” explains Mićković. “That’s why we chose ribs as our next product — we wanted to create something that evokes the primal joys of sharing food.”

Overall, I was left feeling impressed by the world’s first plant-based bone-in ribs. This was definitely the most realistic plant-based whole cut I’ve tried (as opposed to a burger). The texture and addition of bones make it pretty legit. For what it is, I think Juicy Marbles did a great job. 

The pursuit of plant-based meat perfection could also have benefits beyond bonding with your brethren behind the barby.  

Converting the carnivores 

One recent UK study found that almost 90% of consumers who ate plant-based meat and dairy were meat-eaters or flexitarians. Another found that plant-based products with a similar taste, texture, and price to processed meat had the best chance of replacing meat. 

While products like plant-based burgers, steaks or ribs aren’t always enough to turn carnivores into vegans, they have been shown to reduce overall meat consumption, which is good for the planet and our health.

Livestock farming contributes 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions, uses 78% of agricultural land worldwide, and sucks up an estimated 25% of all potable water. Moreover, plant-based meat products are generally healthier than their processed meat equivalents. 

So maybe Juicy Marbles’ pursuit of plant-based meat perfection is also meaningful way to shift our diets in a more sustainable direction.

Europe leading the shift

Despite the benefits, demand for plant-based meat actually declined in the US last year, while Silicon Valley plant-based burger poster children Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods have been losing money and customers.

However, the picture looks more promising in Europe. The plant-based food sector here has grown by 49% over the past two years.       

Figures from the German Agriculture Ministry show that meat consumption dropped to 52 kgs per person in 2022, the lowest figure since records began in 1989. 

Meat consumption in the Netherlands is also declining

Many experts believe that the rise of plant-based alternatives has had a direct impact on the reduction in meat consumption in Europe. Another contributing factor could be that recent soaring inflation has closed the cost gap between conventional meat and plant-based alternatives, which are usually more expensive in supermarkets. 

Whatever the reason may be, plant-based alternatives are here to stay. As the costs begin to decline, the benefits become unequivocal and the options become more legit than ever before, I think it’s likely that plant-based whole cuts like Juicy Marbles’ bone-in ribs will become a common fixture at the barbecues of the future. Herbivores delight!

LOS ANGELES — Russell Westbrook said he will not tolerate fans saying anything personal about him or his family after engaging in a heated exchange with a fan at the end of the LA Clippers’ 113-104 loss to the short-handed Denver Nuggets on Monday night.

With 30 seconds remaining and the Nuggets up 113-102, the Clippers inbounded the ball as Westbrook stood at midcourt and talked back to a fan who was sitting behind the courtside seats.

“I mean, it’s unfortunate,” Westbrook said after the Clippers suffered a frustrating loss to a Nuggets team that played without Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon. “Fans think they can say whatever they want. I’m not going to say [what was said] now because it’s not appropriate, but I’m just protecting myself.

“It’s just unfortunate fans think they can get away with saying anything and, personally, I won’t allow it. I’ve [taken] a lot of people saying anything and getting away with it, but I won’t stand for it.”

Referee Lauren Holtkamp stood in front of Westbrook to make sure nothing happened as play went down the court. But after the buzzer sounded at game’s end, Westbrook returned to midcourt, where fans appeared to be gesturing toward the Clippers point guard.

Holtkamp, Nuggets guard Justin Holiday, Clippers security and arena security, along with Westbrook’s Clippers teammate Daniel Theis, all came over to make sure tensions did not escalate.

Last season during the first-round playoff series between the Clippers and Suns in Phoenix, Westbrook had a verbal confrontation with a Suns fan as players were using a shortcut through a club area from the locker room to go to the court.

When Westbrook was with the Washington Wizards in May 2021, a fan at a playoff game in Philadelphia dumped popcorn on him as he was leaving the court following a right ankle injury. Westbrook had to be held back by Wizards staffers and arena security guards.

And in 2019, a fan in Utah earned a lifetime ban from what was then called the Vivint Smart Home Arena following a verbal altercation with Westbrook while he was with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“I understand fans are enjoying the game and feeling up to whatever that may be,” Westbrook said. “I guess they feel they can kind of say whatever, but this is our job … all the negative comments about family and things of that nature, I would kind of stay away from. But anything else, they can kind of say what they want.”

Westbrook reiterated that he will not stand by and listen to fans verbally attack him or his family.

“Now having kids and understanding how important it is, not just myself but my last name,” Westbrook said. “Understanding what Westbrook means, understanding how important that is to my dad, my grandfather, my family. It’s very important. It’s something I stand on, and the respect is a big thing that I value.

“So the moment that line gets crossed, I won’t allow [it] no more. I’ve stood for it for years, and now my son is old enough to know what’s going on, asking me, ‘Hey Dad, what does that mean? What’s that?’ Now I got to stand on it, and regardless of where I’m at, what’s going on, I’m always standing on that.”
