The 5 finest DNA take a look at kits for 2024

Despite the fact that tons of competitors have sprung up in recent years, 23AndMe still makes the best DNA test on the market. It’s the quickest, it’s very comprehensive, and the way the company presents your genetic data is simple and easy to digest. However, depending on what kind of information you’re looking for, there are other, more specialized DNA tests that might be better suited for you. Whether it’s ancestry, fitness, disease risk, or something else entirely, there’s likely a DNA kit that’ll uncover that data.

With the rising popularity of these tests, we decided to take a closer look and see which ones are worth the investment. To do this, we secured a mail-in kit from as many DNA testing services as we could find, then shipped them a spit tube full of our precious genetic code for analysis. After looking through all the data and personally trying all of these services, there were a few that stood out from the pack. Here are our favorites:

How We Test

Testing these kits out takes a lot of spitting into test tubes, but we feel with the ever-increasing number of DNA tests out there, it’s time that someone took a hard look at these offerings to help you decide if they’re a wise investment. DNA analysis is an evolving science though, and there’s a lot we don’t know about the human genome just yet.

This makes testing a bit of a challenge, however we use a combination of comparison tests matched with our expectations of the end results to select which tests are the best.

Does the test make sense? Is it too overly broad or do the results seem skewed in any way? Is the test easy to perform? Do the results take a long time to process? All these kinds of questions are ones we’re looking to answer.

Of course, usefulness is also a key factor. There’s a plethora of information in your genome, not all of which is particularly useful. Does the DNA test give you any actionable information to better yourself on, or is a particular unique test? It just might make it on this list.

Other Ancestry Tests

There are quite a few ancestry tests out there other than the two we mentioned above. The only one we were able to test that isn’t included here was a British company called Living DNA. While we were big fans of how Living DNA set up its results page – splitting up your maternal and paternal parentage lines – it didn’t work well for us.

It seemed to overestimate our British heritage by a considerable margin, downplaying our primarily Germanic heritage. This may be more of a function of the samples the company has to work with – likely heavily British – so we’d recommend this test only if you have primarily British origins. One cool thing about LivingDNA is that it attempts to also place your British heritage to specific regions of the country, which might be helpful for research.

Younger Stars within the Outskirts of Galaxies Lastly Have an Rationalization

Star formation is well understood when it happens in the populous centers of galaxies. From our vantage point on Earth, within the Milky Way, we see it happening all around us. But when newborn stars are birthed in the empty outskirts of galactic space, it requires a new kind of explanation. At the 243rd meeting of the American Astronomical Association yesterday, astronomers announced that they have observed, for the first time, the unique molecular clouds that give rise to star formation near the remote edges of galaxies.

“We didn’t expect to find star formation at the outskirts of galaxies, but about 18 years ago, surprisingly, the NASA GALEX satellite (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) found a lot of newborn stars at the outskirts of galaxies,” says Jin Koda, lead researcher on the project and associate professor at Stony Brook University. “Astronomers became interested in the environment for this star formation and looked for molecular clouds – the parental sites of star formation – but couldn’t find any. Until now.”

The normal path to star formation involves diffuse atomic gas slowly gravitating together into a cloud that eventually begins to shrink and collapse. As the density increases, the single diffuse atoms form bonds, becoming molecular gas, at which point the gas has transformed into the star-forming engine that astronomers call molecular clouds.

“Molecular clouds typically have very dense cores at their centers which we call the ‘hearts’ of molecular clouds, which are surrounded by less dense molecular gas. Star formation is actually happening in these hearts of molecular clouds: the dense cores,” says Koda.

When GALEX observations found newborn stars on the edge of Galaxy M83 back in 2005, it did not see any accompanying molecular clouds. That was strange.

With this new research, the reason astronomers couldn’t see the clouds has become clear.

The outer envelope of the molecular clouds in this region were invisible: the observations could only see the minuscule “hearts” of the clouds.

Research on the far edge of galaxy M83 reveals unusual star formation in an extreme environment. This area, outlined in yellow, is shown in data from several different instruments. From left to right: optical image from CTIO, ultraviolet image from GALEX, HI 21cm image from VLA and GBT, and CO(3-2) image from ALMA. In this last image, the star-forming “hearts” of molecular clouds, circled with white, are shown. Image Credit: Jin Koda.

The team discovered a total of 23 of these solitary molecular cloud hearts, each within a tiny region of Galaxy M83.

Now that researchers know the formation sites for these outskirt stars exist (albeit looking very distinct from their inner galactic counterparts), they can put one 18-year-old mystery to rest. But the research also raised a new mystery.

The same region that hosted the 23 molecular cloud hearts was also home to a surprisingly large concentration of atomic gas, compared to the amount of molecular gas observed.

“We don’t yet understand why this atomic gas has not converted to molecular gas efficiently in this environment,” says Amanda Lee, who was an undergraduate on the team, and is now at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

For that answer, more research is necessary.

David Thilker, the astronomer responsible for the original discovery of newborn stars in M83’s outskirts using GALEX 18 years ago, says “It has been gratifying to see the search for dense clouds associated with the outer disk finally come to fruition, revealing a characteristically different observational fingerprint for the molecular clouds.”

Besides GALEX, observations for this research were carried out using a combination of instruments, including the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), and the Subaru Telescope.

J&J to accumulate Ambrx Biopharma, a most cancers drug developer, for $2B

An entry sign to the Johnson & Johnson campus shows their logo in Irvine, California on August 28, 2019.

Johnson & Johnson on Monday said it will pay $2 billion in cash to acquire Ambrx Biopharma, a drugmaker specializing in one of the hottest areas of cancer treatment.

Ambrx is aiming to target multiple cancers with drugs called antibody-drug conjugates, or ADCs, which are described by researchers as “guided missiles” to directly target and kill cancer cells and minimize damage to healthy tissue.

The deal, which was announced on the first day of the annual JPMorgan Healthcare Conference, makes J&J the latest drugmaker to bet on ADCs following similar moves by other large rivals – including Pfizer, AbbVie and Merck – over the last year.

The acquisition also comes as J&J scrambles to fill a revenue hole that’s approaching in 2025, when its top-selling drug Stelara, which is used to treat a long-lasting autoimmune disease called psoriasis, is expected to face generic competition.

More CNBC health coverage

“Ambrx’s pipeline and ADC platform present exciting future opportunities to deliver enhanced, precision biologics as we look to transform the treatment of cancer and improve patients’ lives,” Dr. Yusri Elsayed, J&J’s global therapeutic area head of oncology, said in a release.

Under the terms of the deal, J&J will pay $28 a share for Ambrx, or about double the firm’s Friday closing price of $13.63. J&J expects to close the deal in the first half of 2024.

Shares of Ambrx more than doubled Monday to just under that purchase price, while J&J’s stock closed effectively flat.

How Shaun White Discovered a Profitable Companion in Nina Dobrev

Spend enough time dating in Hollywood, and you’ll come up with a plan for how to deal when a relationship goes sideways.

Nina Dobrev‘s strategy, for instance, involves her passport. The Bulgaria-born, Canada-bred actress has “been kind of all over,” she shared in a 2018 interview with Cosmopolitan. “I don’t often splurge on material things; I splurge on flights and travel. I’ve been to Thailand, Japan, Australia, Brussels, Switzerland. [I like] discovering new cultures, meeting new people, getting away from my normal schedule.”

As in, having no schedule at all, which is what she does when she’s off-the-clock. “I’m one of those people who works hard and plays hard—I go 130 percent in either direction,” she continued, noting that wanderlust hits even harder when she’s recovering from a split. Asked to share her tried-and-true breakup strategy, she told the mag, “A plane ticket, a glass of tequila and a group of girlfriends.”

Though having a promising new romantic prospect tag along works as well.

Jan 8, 2024, 08:21 AM ET

In a sweeping overhaul of the franchise’s football leadership that started with the dismissal of coach Ron Rivera on Monday morning, Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris has hired two prominent executives — former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman — to assist his ownership group with searches for a new head of football operations and head coach, team officials told ESPN.

Rivera, who joined the Commanders in 2020, had final say in all football decisions and hired the team’s front office. But after capturing the NFC East in Rivera’s first season with a 7-9 record, the Commanders were never able to produce a winning record.

“I want every Washington fan to know how much I appreciate your unwavering support,” Rivera said in a statement. “Through all the name changes, roster moves, non-football headlines and seasons that did not meet your expectations, you still stood by this team. We did win an NFC East title in 2020, but we fell short since then and for that, I am truly disappointed.”

The team finished this season at 4-13 and last in the NFC East, and it went 26-40-1 in his four seasons at the helm.

In a statement, Harris thanked Rivera, calling him a “good man” and “thoughtful leader” but noting that “the results this season were not good enough, and a strategic shift in leadership and approach is necessary.

On the timeline to install new leadership, Harris told reporters on Monday that the process would be rapid with the team already putting out multiple requests for interviews. But he emphasized that it would be a thoughtful approach.

“You have to make long-term decisions and do things one person at a time, one athlete at a time,” said Harris. “So sometimes they take longer. So I think what my view is that we want it to be as quick as we can, but the ultimate goal is to be an elite team.”

Myers, the architect of four championships with the Warriors and a current ESPN NBA analyst, and Spielman, a 30-year NFL front office executive, will work with Harris and limited partners Mitch Rales, Magic Johnson and David Blitzer as part of an advisory committee designed to reshape the Commanders’ front office and coaching staff, team officials told ESPN.

In a search that will commence immediately, Myers will take a lead role in identifying and coordinating interviews with candidates for the top football operations and head-coaching jobs, with Spielman set to work closely with him, officials said.

The allure of the Commanders’ job openings will be buoyed by having the No. 2 pick in a quarterback-rich 2024 draft and projected salary cap space that is among the most in the NFL this offseason.

Harris will be closely involved in the search processes, but his long-standing relationship with Myers — a two-time NBA executive of the year — evolved in recent months and convinced the owner that Myers’ championship résumé and industry relationships could play a significant role in building Washington’s new leadership structure.

“Bob Myers is a winner; who wouldn’t want him on your team trying to help your franchise?,” said Harris. “He knows how to identify talent, how to build winning franchises, winning cultures.”

“Obviously Rick Spielman brings a wealth of football knowledge and …. brings that knowledge of football that you need when you’re interviewing candidates.”

The Commanders’ current front office, including GM Martin Mayhew and executive VP of football/player personnel Marty Hurney, will remain on staff through the search process, officials said. The new head of football operations and head coach will determine their long-term futures with the Commanders, team officials told ESPN.

“This is a crucial offseason for us, and we won’t shy away from the work needed to get back to a place where we can deliver a winning culture top to bottom,” Harris said in a statement shared with ESPN. “… I’ve known Bob a long time and watched him construct four championship teams and a highly successful organization in Golden State. … He is innovative, thoughtful, well-connected across sports and understands what it takes to solidify and sustain championship infrastructure. I think he’s going to be incredibly additive.”

Myers stepped down as GM of the Warriors in June, with four championships in his final eight years on the job. The Warriors reached the NBA Finals six times in Myers’ 11 seasons as GM, losing only to Toronto (2019) and Cleveland (2016). Myers led the Warriors’ 2016 free agent pursuit of Kevin Durant, who was part of two titles with the Warriors before tearing an Achilles in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Myers was hired as an assistant GM in 2011 and promoted to GM in 2012, and outside of Steph Curry’s arrival predating his own, had overseen two Curry contract extensions, drafts, trades and signings that sculpted one of the league’s modern dynasties. Myers was a prominent player agent before joining the Warriors’ front office in 2011.

Myers joined ESPN as an NBA studio and game analyst in August and will continue in that role.

“I have been fortunate to know Josh Harris for many years and his commitment to building championship-caliber teams is what drew me here,” Myers said in a statement. “In my experience, championship infrastructure begins with a strong ownership group that prioritizes culture and invests in attracting the industry’s most talented and innovative leaders. … This is the type of opportunity that really inspires me, and I look forward to contributing to the next chapter of this storied franchise.”

Spielman — who had been the Vikings’ GM for nine years until he was fired in January 2022 — has 30 years of NFL front office experience.

Harris purchased the Commanders for an NFL-record $6.05 billion in May. He replaced Daniel Snyder, whose 24-year run as the franchise’s owner was mired in scandal, dysfunction and losing seasons.

“It wasn’t easy and there is a lot more to be done,” Rivera said about the Commanders in his statement, “but I believe we began to change the culture of this organization in meaningful ways.”

Rivera has a career coaching record of 102-103-2 in the regular season. He led the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl in the 2015 season.

“My life has always been football, and it is a wonderful life,” Rivera said in his statement. “As a player, and now as a coach, I’ve watched in amazement every week as the impossible is done again and again on the field. I have tremendous respect for the NFL because of all that it does to lift communities and people together. Football has become an integral part of America and America is a part of what is truly great about football.”

German Farmers Kick Off Huge Protests In opposition to Coverage That Might Threaten Their Livelihoods • Watts Up With That?

From the DAILY CALLER

NICK POPE
CONTRIBUTOR

German farmers began a week of protest against the government on Monday to push back against subsidy cuts that they say could put them out of business, according to The Associated Press.

Large convoys of trucks and tractors lined streets all over the country on Monday morning, including in the street leading to Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, as farmers are standing up to the liberal-green coalition government for its moves to phase out tax breaks for agricultural vehicles and diesel fuel, according to the AP. Farmers are enraged that the government is looking to eliminate the subsidies, a decision which they say would threaten their ability to remain in business.

The German government opted to eliminate the subsidies to help plug a 17 billion euro gap in the 2024 budget, according to the AP. Officials have since offered to amend their proposal to gradually phase the subsidies out by 2026, but the farmers are still strongly opposed to the decision. (RELATED: Country On Green Transition’s Leading Edge Will Fire Up Coal Plants To Meet Demand This Winter)

The Alternative for Germany (AfD), a conservative populist opposition party that has seen a surge in popularity as Germany’s economy has struggled, is supporting the protests, according to the AP. Meanwhile, the government is warning that the farmers’ protest movement may be co-opted and infiltrated by far-right wing elements.

The liberal-green governing coalition, led by Prime Minister Olaf Scholz, has seen its support fall precipitously since 2021, with a majority of polled Germans stating in December 2023 that they want a change in leadership and early elections, according to Bloomberg News.

Germany has spent vast sums of money to facilitate a green energy transition, but the country is still on track to miss its climate targets. Officials also moved to shut down the country’s remaining nuclear plants in April 2023 amid concerns about the long-term adequacy of energy supply, while its gross domestic product is thought to have shrunk in 2023 and expected to show weak growth in 2024, according to International Politics and Society.

Environment and Energy Minister Robert Habeck warned in June that Germany may have no choice but to deliberately diminish its industrial capacity if its current natural gas deal with Russia expires in 2024 without a replacement in place.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

Moderna Covid vaccine gross sales plunge in 2023, however meet firm forecast

Nikos Pekiaridis | Lightrocket | Getty Images

Moderna on Monday said its Covid vaccine sales plunged by about two-thirds in 2023 to $6.7 billion, as fewer people rolled up their sleeves for an updated version of the jab.

The revenue from the shots met Moderna’s forecast for the year, even as sales plummeted from the more than $18 billion the company booked in 2022.

Moderna’s announcement, which came ahead of its presentation at the annual JPMorgan Healthcare Conference, shows the steep drop in demand for Covid products last year as cases and public concern about the virus dwindled from their pandemic peaks. Weakening demand for the company’s shot, its only commercially available product, led shares of Moderna to fall nearly 45% last year.

Roughly $6.1 billion of Moderna’s revenue related to the shot came from sales of the vaccine. Another $600 million was deferred revenue related to the company’s work with Gavi, a nongovernmental global vaccine organization that coordinated a global shot distribution program, Moderna said in a release.

Moderna during its third-quarter earnings report in November forecast at least $6 billion in full-year Covid vaccine sales, but did not provide a range for that guidance. In August, before the rollout of its latest version of the jab, the company said it expected the shot to rake in $6 billion to $8 billion in revenue.

The company noted that the vaccine won 48% of the U.S. Covid vaccine market share last year. That’s up from the 37% market it captured in 2022.

But the biotech company expects sales from the shot to drop even further in 2024. It reiterated its companywide full-year sales guidance of roughly $4 billion on Monday. Notably, that forecast includes revenue from its vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, which could win Food and Drug Administration approval in April.

Moderna said it expects to return to sales growth in 2025 with the launch of new products. The company currently has 45 products in development, nine of which are in late-stage trials. They include Moderna’s combination shot targeting Covid and the flu, which could win approval as early as 2025.

The company said it expects to “break even” by 2026.

Ari Lennox Particulars Expertise Performing On Rod Wave’s Tour

Ari Lennox is speaking out about the not-so-pleasant time she had as the opening act on Rod Wave‘s recent nationwide tour.

As fans may recall, the ‘On It’ singer had joined Wave on his ‘Nostalgia’ tour, which ran from October 19 to December 18.

Ari Lennox Hated Being On Her Recent Tour

In a heartfelt and candid Instagram Live session, Lennox revealed that the crowd solely caused her time on the road to be anything but enjoyable.

“You could be singing your a** off, and they don’t give a sh**,” she said, acknowledging the clear disconnect between her and Wave’s fans.

The 32-year-old said that the audience ultimately couldn’t relate to her music because they were there “for voices that will never be like my voice.”

The experience ultimately left her feeling miserable. Lennox recalled things getting so bad that she didn’t even want to continue performing because she felt as if she was singing to the wrong crowd at every show.

The 35-date concert had subsequently become the worst tour Lennox had ever been part of.

But despite the obstacles she faced with the audience, Lennox was still determined to give her best performance — regardless of whether people resonated with her songs or not.

She Felt Disconnected From The Crowd

But she soon realized that even after giving the crowd her everything – from the glam to her soul, and her “whole a****le” (her words, not ours), it was never going to be enough.

“Nothing was ever enough,” she continued to tell her fans.

Seeing her industry peers receive a completely different reaction when they hit the stage made things much worse.

When rapper Toosii — who was also an opening act on the tour — would perform, Lennox said the entire building would light up, with fans showing nothing but “love” to the ‘Love Cycle’ rapper.

But as soon as she geared up to sing her first song, it almost seemed like the crowd showed no interest in her.

“I just remember every show racing to get off stage – racing to get through my set. And then I found a spot where I was comfortable, and I started trying to communicate with the audience.

“And then when I realized they were getting angry at me affirming them, I was like, ‘Okay, this is-‘ You’re getting angry that I’m affirming you? This is not my crowd and it will never be. And that’s alright.”

Ari Lennox talks about a “very, very, hard and lonely” time opening up on tour w/ Rod Wave

“I get why it does not makes sense to open up for … anybody. I watched it with Rico Nasty. There’s a certain type of fan base that you’re like, literally aggressive” https://t.co/lwSjv4rfSQ pic.twitter.com/RrMUIEqfkD

— Glock Topickz (@Glock_Topickz) January 7, 2024

Ari’s Water Bottle Incident

Lennox also shed light on the concert-goer who decided to throw a water bottle at her during a show back in November.

As The Shade Room previously reported, the Washington D.C. native was performing her song, ‘Pressure,’ at the Kia Forum in LA when the object was hurled her way.

Understandably, Lennox was fuming and demanded to know who had thrown the bottle at her. But in her IG Live, she said Wave’s fans’ treatment of her had already prepared her for the incident, so it didn’t surprise her when it happened.

“That side of the stage, like, I felt the energy. I wasn’t surprised that it happened. I felt it. First of all, it was all darkness. That was literally the energy coming from the left side.”

NASA Selects the MAGGIE Photo voltaic-Powered Plane for the 2024 NIAC Program

Since 1998, the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program has fostered innovation by accepting new and unconventional proposals from the scientific community. Those selected are awarded funding to conduct early-stage technology studies that could lead to applications that help advance the agency’s scientific and exploration objectives. In a recent press statement, NASA announced the 13 concepts it has selected for Phase I development, which will receive a combined award of up to $175,000 in grants to assess the concepts’ feasibility and develop the technology further.

This year’s selectees range from a sample return from the surface of Venus, a fixed-wing aircraft for Mars, a swarm of probes to travel to Proxima Centauri and explore its system of exoplanets, and more. One of the more eye-catching is the Mars Aerial and Ground Global Intelligent Explorer (MAGGIE) proposed by Ge-Cheng Zha, a Professor of Aerodynamics at the Univeristy of Miami and the President of Coflow Jet LLC. The concept calls for a compact, fixed-wing, solar-powered aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL).

A collage of illustrations highlighting the novel concepts proposed by the 2024 NIAC Phase I awardees. Credit: (clockwise, from upper right) Benner/Zhang/McQuinn/Romero-Calvo/Eubanks/Carpenter/Bickford/Romero/Calvo/Cabauy/ Landis/Rothschild/Zha/NASA

Through the NIAC, NASA maintains a strong tradition where game-changing proposals submitted by the public became missions that made crucial contributions. As NASA Associate Administrator Jim Free said in the statement:

“The daring missions NASA undertakes for the benefit of humanity all begin as just an idea, and NIAC is responsible for inspiring many of those ideas. The Ingenuity helicopter flying on Mars and instruments on the MarCO deep space CubeSats can trace their lineage back to NIAC, proving there is a path from creative idea to mission success. And, while not all these concepts will fly, NASA and our partners worldwide can learn from fresh approaches and may eventually use technologies advanced by NIAC.”

According to Zha’s proposal paper, the inclusion of the CoFlow Jet (CFJ) deflected slipstream technology means that MAGGIE will be capable of cruising at Mach 0.25 (~300 km/h; 190 mph) with a cruise lift coefficient (CL) of 3.5 – nearly an order of magnitude higher than conventional subsonic aircraft in Mars’ thin atmosphere. A fully charged battery would last 7.6 Martian days (sols), giving MAGGIE a range of 179 km (111 mi) at an altitude of 1,000 m (3280 ft). The total range of MAGGIE for an entire Martian year – which works out to 668 sols or 687 Earth days – is 16,048 km (9972 mi). As Zha told Universe Today via email, the proprietary CFJ technology consists of three elements:

“First, CoFlow Jet (CFJ) active flow control enhances lift coefficient, which is needed to overcome the low air density on Mars (1% of that on Earth). Conventional lift coefficient will not be able to lift a useful payload. Second, CFJ removes flow separation or stall. Due to the low air density on Mars, the Reynolds number is very low, which makes the  Aircraft prone to flow separation and stall. If the aircraft stalls, the aircraft will crash, and the game is over.

“Third, CFJ enables deflected slipstream, which is the flow pulled by the propeller. It can turn the flow 90 deg downward so that the VTOL aircraft does not need to tilt the propellers upward at hover. The propeller will remain at the forward-facing position like the at cruise. The CFJ is used in the flap to turn the flow. It makes the VTOL aircraft much simpler than conventional aircraft.”

The mission profile envisioned here would consist of three atmospheric and geophysical investigations. These would explore how long Mars had a magnetic field, the source of methane signals detected by the Curiosity rover in the Gale Crater, and in-depth mapping of the subsurface water ice observed around Mars’ mid-latitudes. Its reliance on solar energy also means that the mission (barring an accident) could remain operational indefinitely. In short, MAGGIE would be able to perform the first global-scale atmospheric mission of Mars and would be the first concept to enable the ongoing exploration of the Red Planet.

“It has a global scale range. It can go anywhere on Mars,” said Zha. “All the previous rovers can only explore a point on Mars. Their ranges are very limited. MAGGIE can not just do the examination on the ground surface, but also examine the atmosphere since it flies.”

The professor also noted how his concept pays homage to the Ingenuity helicopter, which effectively demonstrated the potential for airborne missions on Mars. MAGGIE, he claims, would be similarly engaging to the public because of its audacious nature and the variety of environments it could explore, study, and image. In keeping with the proud tradition of NASA Spinoff, Zha also noted how developing this concept for investigating extraterrestrial environments will have applications for VTOL technologies here on Earth:

“Currently, there is a big movement on Earth to develop eVTOL for urban air mobility. They all need to use tilt rotors, tilt wings, and lift-plus-cruise. It is heavy, draggy, and inefficient. Using the same technology of CoFlow Jet deflected slipstream of MAGGIE, we can improve the efficiency of the eVTOL on Earth significantly.”
