Reflectors in House May Make Photo voltaic Energy Extra Efficient

Solar power is a booming industry right now as we all strive to run our lives with minimum carbon footprint. Solar is a relatively easy way to get clean electricity but of course we are limited to the hours then Sun is above the horizon. Solar panels in space have been muted before but the costs and technology to transmit power to Earth is prohibitive. An alternative approach has been explored by a team of engineers who have been looking at the possibility of deploying giant reflectors into space.

They are a familiar site on houses these days, panels of crystalline-silicon that convert light into electricity. Solar panels have to be positioned carefully to maximise incoming sunlight and thus maximise electricity generation. If a way could be found to increase the amount of time a solar panel was in sunlight then of course they would be more useful to us. In 1993, a 20metre Russian space mirror known as Znamya-2 was unfurled to demonstrate that sunlight could be reflected down to Earth.

The concept to use reflectors in space to prolong the time that solar panels are illuminated is a far simpler and cheaper solution to some sort of solar power station in space. Arguably one of the key times in the day when power is needed is at night so being able to extend the hours of sunlight seems like a great concept. It’s not a new idea though as Hermann Oberth suggested it back in 1929 when he visualised giant reflectors in space, reflecting light down to areas that need it.

A paper recently published explores the reality of the concept and shows how the vision of Oberth may now be achievable. It should be noted that the idea is designed to target sunlight onto solar farms rather than individual homes. The technology is now available and materials suitable to be able to create, launch and deploy large solar reflectors into space. Once deployed, an orbiting reflector could be angled to direct sunlight onto a solar farm as it passes over, extending the ‘day’ and increasing electricity generation.

The reflectors which are proposed to be hexagonal with sides 250 metres long would likely be deployed into orbits at an altitude of about 900km. This would illuminate an area approximately 10km across and extend generation time by around 20 minutes either side of dusk and dawn.

Concerns that these would destroy the night are likely to be unfounded due to the planned approach to target solar farms away from inhabited areas.  The reflectors would not be visible ot the naked eye unless you happened to be standing near a solar farm at the time it was beign illuminated and astronomical observations protected by angling the reflectors when not in use.

It is likely to be some years before such a project became reality but it is nice to see engineers and scientists looking at ways to enhance the generatin of clean energy in a way that promotes protection of our planets natural resources but also limits negative impacts on human activity.

High ’26 recruit Julian Lewis reclassifying to class of ’25

  • Pete Thamel, ESPNJan 16, 2024, 11:29 AM ET

Julian Lewis, the top high school football player in the class of 2026, is headed to college a year early.

The quarterback told ESPN that he plans to reclassify and enter college in the class of 2025. That means this upcoming season at Carrollton High School in Georgia will be his final year in high school.

Lewis committed to USC in August. That’s one of several high-profile schools that has recruited him to come in either the class of 2025 or 2026.

“Since I was 7 years old, one of my goals has been to play Division I football,” Lewis told ESPN. “Through hard work and sacrifice that goal has become a reality. I have been blessed to have two good seasons under Coach Joey King and I have confidence that after this coming season I will be ready to compete at the next level.

Editor’s Picks

“So, after much prayer and talking with my family, coaches and trainers I will be reclassifying to the class of 2025.”

Lewis is such a talent that he could be ESPN’s top-ranked high school player in either the class of 2025 or 2026.

It’s expected that he’ll be ranked No. 1 in the class of 2025 in ESPN’s next rankings when they come out on Jan. 29. In ESPN’s August rankings of high school prospects regardless of class, Lewis ranked ahead of the current top player in the class of 2025, quarterback Bryce Underwood, who recently committed to LSU.

In two seasons at Carrollton High School (Georgia), Julian Lewis has thrown for a total of 7,212 yards, 96 touchdowns and completed nearly 66% of his passes. John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Not surprising of a player of his stature, Lewis has offers from the sport’s top programs — Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas and Oregon. Lewis, 16, is also the rare high school recruit who has built a strong national reputation outside of recruiting circles, as he already has 131,000 Instagram followers.

King also coached Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence when he was in high school. Lewis’ talent has been compared to that of both Lawrence and Georgia native Justin Fields when at the same age.

King told ESPN last year about Lewis: “I’ve had the privilege of coaching Trevor Lawrence. He’s in the same category as Trevor. The skill set and arm talent he has are definitely advanced for his age.”

In two seasons of high school, he’s thrown for a total of 7,212 yards, 96 touchdowns and completed nearly 66% of his passes. This year, he threw 48 touchdowns and just two interceptions, down from 12 a year ago.

Lewis had emerged as the face of the case for Georgia high school athletes to earn NIL deals, a rule that passed in the state in early October.

He’ll now have one more season of high school in Georgia before entering the college realm. USC does not have a quarterback commitment in the class of 2025. More than half of that class’ top quarterbacks — four of the top five dual threats and six of the top 10 pocket passers — have already verbally committed.

Niecy Nash-Betts Particulars Motivation Behind Shifting Acceptance Speech

Niecy Nash-Betts‘ Emmys acceptance speech was even better than you think.

Moments after delivering a heartfelt speech while accepting the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at the 2023 Emmys, the Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story star shared insight into why it was important to acknowledge herself while on stage.

“I believed in me, and sometimes people don’t believe in themselves,” Niecy told reporters in the press room after receiving her award. “I hope my speech was a delicious invitation for people to do just that—believe in yourself and congratulate yourself.”

And she stressed the importance of confidence for anyone chasing their goals in life.

“Sometimes you’ve got to encourage what? Yourself,” the 53-year-old explained. “That’s why it’s not called mama-esteem, them-esteem, us-esteem. It’s called self-esteem ‘cause nobody got to believe it but you.”

The Reno 911! actress —who has been nominated for an Emmy four times before her recent win—also emphasized how hard she’s worked for the accolade.

The Unusual Case of the Lacking Local weather Change Committee • Watts Up With That?

Essay by Eric Worrall

For 18 months, and British PM Rishi Sunak has failed to appoint a new Climate Change Committee head. Now the Chief Executive of the committee just resigned.

Sunak ‘dodging scrutiny’ by failing to appoint chair of Climate Change Committee

No successor has been named for Lord Deben – and now the independent watchdog’s chief executive has resigned

Toby Helm Political Editor

Rishi Sunak has been accused of trying to avoid scrutiny of his green policies after details surfaced about his government’s failure, over more than 18 months, to appoint a new chair of the independent climate change committee.

Senior environmentalists said they believed Sunak may be deliberately trying to avoid appointing a successor to Lord Deben – who first announced that he was stepping down in July 2022 – until after a general election, so he does not face criticism for his U-turns on green issues.

The Observer can reveal that peer and former Tory minister David Willetts, who had been seen as the clear favourite, was interviewed for the post last summer but has since had no further contact at all from the government about the job and no indication as to whether he is still being considered.

A Whitehall source who knows several people who applied for the post said: “No one seems to know what is going on. There could be a number of reasons. Either Sunak does not want anyone in the job because he wants to avoid being criticised in the run-up to a general election or there is a blockage, a disagreement at high level over who it should be. Whatever it is, it is scandalous that a job like this has not been filled when climate change is supposed to be the most urgent question facing humanity.”

The committee suffered another blow last week, when its chief executive, Chris Stark, announced he was standing down after six years. Stark is to join net zero advisory group the Carbon Trust as chief executive.

This is strange even by the standards of British politics. We’re familiar with fake British Government committees, where people pretend to be part of a committee, so the government can pretend they are doing something about an issue. The famous British sitcom “Yes Minister” several times referenced fake committees. But an empty chair committee, on such a high profile issue, is next level weird.

The alleged motive seems obvious – the last thing Rishi Sunak needs heading into an election is a newly appointed climate committee chair who turns out to be a closet activist, or trades their position for a bunch of lucrative green directorships, who then uses their new appointment to criticise the government which appointed them.

There is an obvious solution – appoint a member of the climate skeptic Global Warming Policy Foundation as climate committee chair. Frenzied greens would direct so much energy and effort attacking the new committee chair, they might forget to criticise the government.

Jim Cramer’s four inventory concepts from JPMorgan Healthcare Convention

An exhibit from Abbott is seen during the Consumer Electronics Show January 10, 2024, in Las Vegas

Brendan Smialowski | AFP | Getty Images

Health care may be a real challenger to tech this year, a business that can actually grow faster than most of tech and has the possibility of a comeback from the Covid straitjacket that so many of these companies got caught up in. The pandemic obscured so much of the growth as Abbott Labs, for example, poured money into BinaxNOW tests, and Regeneron developed a rapid response drug. Pfizer went after vaccines and rapid responses, and the drug stores shifted resources to Covid immunity shots.

Now, with Covid behind them, we are seeing the true earnings power of so many terrific companies. For our newest Bullpen additions, we focused on Abbott Labs, Novartis, Amgen and Walgreens Boots Alliance. We will go over them – but first, let me talk about what I learned at last week’s JPMorgan Health Care Conference that I attended in San Francisco, and what it means to your portfolio.

We have not spent too much of our resources on this sector because it wasn’t right to do so. You have Covid eating up time and resources not just to develop sources of immunity and treatment but also because you did not have patients coming and asking for treatment for more elective surgery, especially the elderly. That’s what felled UnitedHealth taking our now-disappointing Club name Humana down with it.

Pink Sea transport disaster newest headache for Tesla in Europe

The escalating situation in the Red Sea has forced Tesla to halt production at its gigafactory in Germany, in what marks the latest headache for Elon Musk’s car company in Europe.

The carmaker said last week that production at its plant in Berlin, which makes Model Y vehicles and batteries, will be put on hold from January 29 to February 11 due to a “lack of parts.”

Tesla heavily relies on components from China to produce its EVs. Many of these get shipped through the Suez Canal, the fastest route between Asia and Europe. However, increasing attacks against cargo ships by Yemen-based Houthi Rebels in the region have forced many of these vessels to reroute round the southern tip of Africa, causing weeks-long delays.

The Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory is where Tesla assembles electric vehicles it sells in Europe. The company did not specify which components affecting the factory’s operations have been delayed.

TNW Conference 2024 – Who will be the next Shining Stars of TNW for Startups?

Nominate a rising scaleup you think is on track to becoming the next revolutionary unicorn

This supply chain disruption is the latest blow for Tesla’s European operations. Over the last few months, the company has been battling the worst strikes in its history in Sweden, intense competition from rivals, and plummeting European sales.

Tesla fights fires

Tesla has lost more than $94bn in market valuation in just the first two weeks of 2024. The EV maker has been pounded by a barrage of negative news, including car rental giant Hertz offloading its fleet of the American EVs, yet another price cut is coming for Teslas made in China, and signs of rising labour costs. And then there’s the Swedish union action.

Workers at Tesla repair shops in Sweden downed tools on October 27, seeking collective agreements to provide better wages and benefits for mechanics. The strike has since spread to Norway, Finland, and Denmark in what is the biggest union action the company has ever faced.

The uprising is a direct consequence of Musk’s refusal to accept unionisation of Tesla workers — a policy that also risks disrupting operations in the US and Germany where it has the majority of its employees.

This comes amid a difficult fourth quarter last year which saw Warren Buffet-backed Chinese rival BYD knocking Tesla from the top spot as the world’s best selling EV manufacturer. This was thanks to aggressive price cutting by the Chinese company but is also a sign that Tesla’s preoccupation with Musk’s very expensive pet projects, such as the long-awaited cybertruck, might be taking its toll.

At the same time, sales of Tesla cars in Germany, home to its only European manufacturing plant, plunged a shocking 77% in December year-on-year. While Tesla is still a force to be reckoned with, especially in Norway, Musk’s haphazard antics could be giving rivals an opportunity to pounce. Watch this space.

Shhh, NASA Reveals its New Quiet Supersonic Plane

The term space plane conjurs up all sorts of images and NASA, with their new X-59 (even the name sounds mysterious) they have definitely not dissapointed. Their new quiet supersonic aircraft has been designed to minimise the sonic boom it creates when it crosses the speed of sound. It will fly at 1.4 times the speed of sound and is set for its maiden flight later this year.

The plane is the result of a joint project between NASA and Lockheed Martin and it has a simple yet ambitious aim. The dream is to revolutionise air travel by producing a new generation of commercial jets that can travel faster than the speed of sound. It’s important to note that these will be the next generation of supersonic aircrat because Tupolev TU-144 (maiden flight 31 Dec 1968) and Concorde (maiden flight 2 March 1969) were the first.

Concorde (Image Credit : Eduard Marmet)

Supersonic flight is the ability to fly at speeds in excess of the speed of sound. The value for the speed of sound varies based on air density but at sea level, it is 1,224 km/hour. Fly slower than this and the flight is subsonic, fly faster and it goes supersonic. Aircraft that break the sound barrier produce the famous sonic boom but this does not occure at the moment an object crosses the sound barrier.

The sonic boom, which is the effect of compressed shock waves, is a continuous sound that occurs all the time the aircraft travels faster than sound. To observers on the ground, you only experince the boom when the pressure wavse pass over you. The sound can be quite distressing so the X-59 hopes to address the disturbance that it causes.

The design of the X-59 looks like it is straight out of a science fiction movie. It is 30 metres long and 9 metres wide. It has a thin tapered nose which takes up about a third of the overall length and it is hoped it will significantly break up the shockwaves that create the sonic boom. Because of the design and the long nose, the pilot sits about half way along making it difficult to get a suitable forward view out of a window. To address this, high resolution cameras feed a signal to 4K monitors in the cockpit as part of the eXternal Vision System.

Concorde was decomissioned in 2003 having flown for 27 years. Since then, we have been limited to subsonic flights and ocean crossing lasting many hours. In comparison, Concorde could complete a trans-atlantic crossing from JFK to Heathrow in a little under 3 hours while today’s jets takes more like 7 hours. If the test flights of X-59 later this year are a success then maybe we can all look forward to faster travel times around the globe in years to come.

Tory Lanez Reunites With Son After Two Weekend Visitations

There’s something incredibly touching about the bond between father and son, and it seems that no one knows this better than Tory Lanez.

Amidst the tumultuous times, the rapper has reportedly been spending quality time with his 6-year-old son, Kai, during back-to-back prison visits.

Tory Lanez Reunites With Son In Prison

Lanez has been utilizing the visitation rights granted to him at California Correctional Institution Tehachapi to seemingly ensure he remains a consistent presence in his son’s life.

These visits have reportedly become a regular occurrence, with Kai making two recent trips to the prison to spend time with his dad.

According to TMZ, the youngster recently saw the ‘Temperature Rising’ artist on two weekends in a row, and they didn’t have to communicate through a glass either.

The pair were allowed to sit at a table together on both days of the weekend, with each session lasting around 4-5 hours, sources tell the publication.

Lanez and his son reportedly drew pictures together as well as play board games and eat food from the vending machine.

Further details of their interaction remain private, but one can imagine that the pair tried to create some sort of normalcy under somewhat unusual circumstances.

The prison walls may confine Lanez physically, but they certainly haven’t been able to contain the love he holds for his child.

The news outlet reports that the Canadian was “happy” to get some physical interaction with Kai, as he couldn’t spend time with his offspring during the holidays.

Tory Lanez’s 10-Year Sentence In The Meg Thee Stallion Shooting Case

The six-year-old acted as his dad’s support system during Lanez’s trial in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case in August 2023.

The legal ordeal stemmed from an incident in July 2020, when Lanez was alleged to have shot Stallion in the foot following a dispute as they left Kylie Jenner‘s home.

The court found Lanez guilty of all three charges, shooting the victim by negligently discharging a gun, illegally possessing a firearm, and committing assault with a firearm. The judge consequently sentenced him to 10 years in prison without the possibility of parole, per ABC News.

Lanez has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence since the charges were first filed against him.

After receiving his sentence, Lanez continued to assert that the media was presenting an unbalanced and misleading narrative surrounding the trial.

In a series of social media posts and interviews, he has sought to clarify some things, stating that he believes the truth will ultimately prevail.

“I have never let a hard time intimidate me,” he wrote in an Instagram Story post. “I will never let no jail time eliminate me. Regardless of how they try to spin my words, I have always maintained my innocence and I always will.”

“I’ve faced adversity my whole life and every time it looked like I would lose, I came out on top,” Lanez continued. “This is nothing but another moment where my back is against the wall and I refuse to stop fighting till I come out victorious. Tough times don’t last, tough people do.”

JuJu Watkins, No. 9 USC ship No. 2 UCLA to first loss in rematch

Jan 14, 2024, 08:05 PM ET

LOS ANGELES — JuJu Watkins lay on the court, surrounded by her teammates, the final buzzer having faded.

The freshman sensation was cramping after scoring 32 points in No. 9 USC’s 73-65 victory over second-ranked UCLA. A trainer used a handheld massage gun on Watkins’ legs. She couldn’t stop smiling and laughing after anticipation had kept her awake the night before.

“She just goes all-out all the time,” USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said.

Watkins and the Trojans sent the Bruins to their first loss of the season Sunday, leaving No. 1 South Carolina as the nation’s lone undefeated team.

“As a team we just were just so eager on defense,” Watkins said. “I fed off my teammates’ energy. You just want to be a part of that. On the defensive end, we played a great game. The whole team did it.”

It was Watkins’ sixth 30-point game of the season and first since Dec. 3 for the Trojans (13-1, 3-1 Pac-12), who extended their home winning streak to 17 games.

“I felt like this was going to happen,” Gottlieb said. “Our preparation and mentality was going to give us a chance to win the game.”

McKenzie Forbes added 18 points as the Trojans ended a nine-game skid against their crosstown rival. UCLA (14-1, 3-1) won 71-64 two weeks ago at Pauley Pavilion in front of a record crowd of 13,659 in the schools’ first meeting of top-10 teams this season.

“We showed so much what we’re capable of, not just to fans but to ourselves,” Forbes said.

Charisma Osborne led the Bruins with 25 points, all in the second half in front of a sellout crowd of 10,258 at Galen Center. After feeling sick at halftime, the fifth-year player hit a layup late in the third quarter that gave her 2,000 career points. Lauren Betts, UCLA’s leading scorer and rebounder, was held to 10 after not starting for the first time this season after being sick during the week.

“We were just trying to keep fighting, trying to get to the basket,” Osborne said. “We kept giving up buckets and we couldn’t get stops.”

All five of UCLA’s starters were in foul trouble, with Londynn Jones, Kiki Rice and Lina Sontag fouling out in the fourth.

Watkins was just 8-of-22 from the field and missed all six of her 3-point attempts, but she went 16-of-16 from the free throw line and had 10 rebounds.

“She’s going to score,” UCLA coach Cori Close said, “but we didn’t execute what we said we were going to do and we didn’t have each other’s back and you get caught.”

Forbes’ 3-pointer kept USC ahead 60-48 in the fourth.

But the Bruins ran off nine straight points, capped by Jones’ 3-pointer, to get to 63-59.

Watkins hit a jumper and Taylor Bigby scored for USC. Jones’ layup drew the Bruins within five points.

Jones missed a 3-pointer and Angela Dugalic missed a layup in the final 14 seconds.

The Bruins outscored USC 23-17 in the third quarter, getting 13 points by Osborne, to close to 51-42. Watkins picked up two quick fouls early but scored 10 points.

USC was missing starting center Rayah Marshall (13 points and 10.5 rebounds) and reserve Aaliyah Gayles, who were both sick.

The Trojans used runs of 11-0 in the first quarter and 15-0 in the second to lead 34-19 at halftime. Twice Watkins got her own offensive rebound and scored despite defensive pressure in the paint.

Before Watkins got going offensively, Harvard transfer Forbes hit back-to-back 3-pointers to power the Trojans’ first-quarter run.

The Bruins committed 15 turnovers that led to 16 points for the Trojans in the first half when UCLA starters Jones, Osborne and Dugalic were scoreless.

Among the celebs on hand were rappers Chris Brown and USC graduate Saweetie, Candace Parker and Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller.

Protection Secretary Austin is ‘actively concerned and engaged’ whereas hospitalized

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin testifies before a House Armed Services Committee hearing on the conclusion of military operations in Afghanistan at the Rayburn House Office building on Capitol Hill on September 29, 2021 in Washington, DC.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is still hospitalized following doctors’ advice, but he’s “actively involved and engaged,” according to national security spokesperson John Kirby.

Appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Kirby said that Austin took part in discussions planning strikes on Iran-allied Houthi militants in Yemen several days ago.

“It’s also important for people to remember that the cabinet officials don’t have to sit and talk every single day to make every decision,” Kirby said. “A lot of the work that gets done in national security is done at the staff level.”

Austin has been treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since Jan. 1, following complications from a surgery nearly two weeks earlier to treat prostate cancer. Kirby said Sunday that physical therapy is part of the reason doctors have kept Austin in the hospital.

The Pentagon’s failure to disclose Austin’s hospital admittance to the White House or the public has stirred up controversy, although President Joe Biden is standing by Austin.

For two days, Pentagon officials also failed to tell Austin’s second-in-command that he transferred his authority over to her while he was in the intensive care unit.

“The Pentagon’s investigating this, and we’ll see what comes out of that, but that is not the way that the process is supposed to work,” Kirby said.
