Abbott Labs shines with a powerful quarter and a buyback announcement

Medical device manufacturer Abbott Laboratories reported better-than-expected quarterly results on Wednesday and raised its profit forecast for the third consecutive quarter. Shares rose more than 1%, shaking off an initially muted reaction.

Media reporters for Florida Gov. DeSantis Colleges reward flawed alarmists, claiming Hurricane Milton was made worse by “man-made world warming.”

Governor DeSantis delivered a spectacular example of political leadership while demonstrating his climate science knowledge and credibility when he spoke at a press conference about the state's situation and status in dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Milton (see below).

His important remarks on Florida's hurricane history and impacts, as well as the measures being taken to address the aftermath of Hurricane Milton Merit of being displayed in print to deliver as best he could and to be heard on several websites where his extremely competent press conference remarks were published.

“The strongest hurricane to hit the state of Florida since the 1850s occurred in the 1930s, the Labor Day Hurricane, with a pressure of 892 millibars.”

“It completely wiped out the Keys. We have never seen anything like this, and this far exceeds any strong hurricane we have ever experienced in the state of Florida.”

“The deadliest hurricane the state has ever faced was the Okeechobee hurricane in 1928, which killed more than 4,000 people.”

“Luckily something like that won’t happen to us this time.”

“So I just think people need to put this in perspective.”

“They try to take different things that happen in tropical weather and act like there's nothing new under the sun.”

You know, this is something that the state has dealt with throughout its history and it's something that it will continue to deal with.”

“I think what has changed is that we have 23 million people. A storm that hits is likely to affect more people and property than it did 100 years ago, and so the potential for damage has increased, but what has also changed affects us.” Ability to prevent, to pre-position assets,”

“I mean, we never did pre-provisioning of energy assets until I became governor. Well, people expect that, but that hasn’t been done in the past.”

“That’s why during hurricanes, people would be without power for three weeks. We thought it wasn't good. Now we have to pay to get these people in, but in my opinion the quicker you get everyone online, the better off the economy will be anyway.”

In response to another reporter's question regarding the claim that human-caused global warming has caused storms to become more intense, Governor DeSantis noted:

“Oh, I think most people remember 2004 when it seemed like we had storms every two weeks.”

“You know from 2006 to 2016 we had no hurricanes at all.”

“There was a time when there were a lot of hurricanes in the 1940s.”

“So this situation has a lot of similarities to what happened in 2004.”

What a breath of fresh air from a competent political leader who is dealing with the reality of climate science rather than politically contrived climate alarmist speculation and hype.

Tech startups are shaking up the development business in Europe

From the outside it looks like a clean, modern social housing block. You can tell it's new: there are 84 shiny solar panels on the roof and the fresh paint on the walls has barely dried. But what really matters is how this building with 56 apartments in Barcelona and a kindergarten on the ground floor was designed and built.

“Our software is our superpower,” says Lucas Carné, co-founder of 011h, a construction technology company, as he describes how his company has developed digital tools to help architects design buildings like this. “We use a lot of prefabricated parts,” he adds. “This reduces the need for local workers.”

Prefabricated construction involves prefabricated building parts or components that are assembled on site. It's far from a new concept, but 011h has tried to make it much easier for architects to adopt this approach. The company offers architectural software plugins that contain libraries full of these pre-built components. This makes designing a building similar to playing with digital Lego.

Improving productivity to solve the housing shortage

To date, 011h has worked with architectural and construction firms on several Spanish apartment blocks of various designs, completing approximately one such block per year. The company now plans to expand to several projects per year, totaling around 200 apartments per year. The company has so far raised more than 35 million euros and employs 90 people.

This push to streamline design and construction is urgently needed, says Carné. Like in many European countries The demand for housing in Spain currently exceeds the supply. However, the picture is different across the continent a lack of housingAnd a shortage of construction workersare common topics. Material costs also skyrocketed in the worst years of the pandemic. Now various European startups are developing a number of ideas to mitigate these problems.

“Our goal is to improve productivity,” says Carné. “Probably the biggest problem in this industry is stagnating productivity.”

Build with digital Lego

Traditionally, construction has been a completely disconnected business. Roughly speaking, an architect creates a design and then hands it over to a contractor, who separately works out how to actually implement that design. 011h takes a different point of view. “We carry out a design and build process together with the suppliers and solutions we will use,” says Carné.

All information about who supplies which components, what costs are incurred and what the CO2 footprint looks like is recorded in the company's software from the start. His team focuses on using sustainable materials – such as responsibly sourced wood instead of concrete, as the latter contains high levels of carbon.

The buildings of 011h have achieved CO2 emissions of less than 400 kg CO22 Equivalent per square meter – significantly better than the current average. In addition, according to Carné, construction time is reduced by around 30% compared to average.

Construction conservatism can hinder the adoption of new technologies

Revolutionizing construction with digital technology is promising but difficult to implement, says Sam O'Gorman of McKinsey's Real Estate Practice. He notes that there is often resistance to new approaches in the construction sector. Furthermore, given the high capital expenditure, there is significant risk if a project goes wrong: “A single failure could cost the company.”

However, if companies entering this space have a good track record – perhaps through significant self-funding, at least initially – then they could convince potential partners that they are worthy of collaboration or investment, O'Gorman adds.

Another company that says technology can help us build homes smarter and faster is AUAR (Automated Architecture) in the UK. Gilles Retsin, co-founder and CTO, says his company's approach is to equip construction companies with “microfactories” – boxes with large robotic arms inside. These arms work tirelessly to produce modular building units. Imagine a wooden floor or wall panel measuring approximately 4 x 3 meters, thick enough to be filled with insulation, and which can be assembled with other panels to form a building.

“The robot will essentially grab raw materials, cut them and place them on an assembly table where it will nail them together,” explains Retsin. “Then they are brought to the site by people using a crane.” AUAR employs 17 people and has raised £2.6 million.

The company is currently targeting the European and US markets, both of which are suffering from labor shortages in the construction sector. “We just built a two-story building in Belgium,” says Retsin. In this case, the microfactory robot took about three days to produce the building block units, and human workers took another three days to connect these units together and complete the main structure of the building.

AUAR originally made its microfactory robots available at a cost of £250,000 each, but Retsin says the company is moving to a hardware-as-a-service model, where builders pay a lower fee to deliver the microfactory to site can. You then pay a further small fee per square meter of building area produced.

Although the company has not yet scaled, Retsin emphasizes the enormous potential of keeping the robot arms running continuously – and perhaps using many of them in parallel. “The capacity of a robot is 200 homes per year if you let it run eight hours a day,” he says, adding that the next step for the company is to launch a 30-home project in the U.S. next year to take attack.

Robo Brickie

Finally, bricklaying remains a crucial skill required for housing construction in Europe in 2024, as brick-based construction continues to be valued by European homebuyers. However, there are also bricklayers among the workers currently very scarce. Amsterdam-based Monumental has an alternative.

“They tell me: 'I want to build a facade for a house, it's X square meters,'” says Salar al Khafaji, founder and CEO. “I’ll give you a price and do it for you – but I’ll do it with robots.”

The company, which has raised $25 million so far and employs 32 people, offers bots that can lay mortar and bricks in a careful order to automatically build a wall.

The process involves three individual robots, each performing a separate task: either delivering a brick, applying a lump of mortar or placing a brick. However, grouting – i.e. the clean completion of the visible mortar joints between the bricks – still has to be done manually.



In videos like the one above, the bricklaying work carried out by the robots appears to be rather slow, but al Khafaji emphasizes that since the machine is able to continue working continuously and without interruptions, it can roughly keep up with that of the average human bricklayer Rate of 500 bricks laid per day.

Keeping people informed is still urgently needed

Automating specific activities like this that can be integrated into traditional construction processes could help these technologies be adopted more quickly, suggests O'Gorman. However, he points out that human supervision and completion of tasks are still required. It can take a long time for robot builders to work all night with little or no supervision.

Nevertheless, Monumental's robots have already helped, among other things, to build a canal retaining wall in Amsterdam and a one-story villa. Demand is encouraging, says al Khafaji, indicating that he has orders for several new terraced houses on the books in the coming months. The company is also exploring the potential of its use more environmentally friendly bricksas normal clay bricks contain a high amount of embodied carbon.

While Monumental's masonry machines cannot yet lay vertical bricks or build arches, they can create curved corners and also lay bricks artistic patterns.

“I find that really exciting,” says al Khafaji, “that brings beauty back into our built environment.”

Serena Williams is recovering from recent surgery.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion revealed that she recently underwent a procedure to remove a benign cyst on her neck.

“In May I discovered a lump on my neck. I immediately went to the doctor, got an MRI and was told I had an upper arm cyst,” the 43-year-old wrote under a TikTok video shared on October 15. “Have you ever heard of this? They said I don't need to have it removed if I don't want to. So I didn’t understand it, but it kept growing.”

Serena, who has daughters together Olympia7, and Adira13 months, with husband Alexis Ohanian continued: “I decided to do more testing, three tests and a biopsy later. Everything is still negative but the doctors advised me to remove it as soon as possible as it was the size of a small grapefruit and could become infected or worse, leak. So I'm removing it. I'm so grateful and happy that everything worked out and most importantly, I'm healthy. I still made it to American Doll with Olympia as promised. And yes, everything is fine.

The decision was made as part of a cost-cutting initiative at the club, launched following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's acquisition of a minority stake in February.

This comes after United completed layoffs of 250 employees to save around £45 million ($58.8 million).

Ferguson has been an ambassador for the club since 2013 after deciding to step down as manager after more than 25 years at the helm.

The role paid the legendary former boss more than £2million a year and a source has told ESPN the deal was terminated as part of “general cost-cutting measures”.

A club source told ESPN that the 82-year-old “will always be welcome at Old Trafford”, describing the decision as “amicable” and “suitable for both parties”.

However, Eric Cantona, who played a leading role in Man United's first four Premier League titles under Ferguson, described the decision as “completely scandalous”.

“Sir Alex Ferguson should be able to do whatever he wants at the club until he dies,” Cantona, who played for United between 1992 and 1997, posted on Instagram. “Such a lack of respect. It's completely scandalous. Sir Alex Ferguson will forever be my boss! And I throw them all in a big bag of shit!”

Ferguson won 13 English league titles during his time as manager between 1986 and 2013. He also won the Champions League in 1999 and 2008 as well as nine other national cup victories. He remains the last United manager to lead the club to the Premier League title.

In the eleven years since his retirement he has been a regular visitor to Old Trafford and has also held a seat on the club's ceremonial football board.

A source told ESPN that Ferguson, who turns 83 in December, will also step back from other roles, some unrelated to United, over the next year.

Jupiter's nice pink spot wobbles

Jupiter is known for its Great Red Spot, a feature discovered by Galileo over 400 years ago! Astronomers have tracked its size and shape for over a century, but the most accurate measurements come from the Hubble Space Telescope. Every time Earth and Jupiter are closest, Hubble takes a series of images and from these images it was determined that the spot wobbles from day to day. Not only does it change size, but it also changes length and width, baffling astronomers.

Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and, like the other outer planets, is a giant ball of gas. It's so big that it can fit all the other planets in the solar system, leaving plenty of room left over. Composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, it can be seen with amateur telescopes as a colorful disk with belts, storms and, of course, the Great Red Spot. The site was first discovered by Galileo around 1610, when he became the first person to point a telescope at the distant planet.

The Great Red Spot is a storm that has raged for over 400 years. It's large enough that Earth could easily fit in more than once, and it's an anticyclonic system similar to those seen here on Earth. It rotates counterclockwise at speeds of over 400 mph. Over the years the overall size appears to have decreased, although not as quickly as expected.

Images of the storm captured by Hubble were collected over a 90-day period between December 2023 and March 2024, when Jupiter was closest to Earth. Its high-resolution cameras showed that it wobbles like a bowl of jelly and is certainly not as stable as we once thought. Previous studies have shown that there is some movement along the long axis, but no evidence of size changing.

The team of astronomers, led by Amy Simon of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, published their findings in the Planetary Science Journal. Simon's said: “This is really the first time we have the correct frame rate of the GRS. Because of Hubble's high resolution, we can say that the GRS is definitely moving in and out while moving faster and slower at the same time. This was very unexpected and currently there are no hydrodynamic explanations.”

The study was part of NASA's Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy program (OPAL), whose goal is to obtain a long time series of observations of the outer planets to understand their evolution and atmospheres. However, these recent observations only served to explore and analyze the GRS. Projecting into the future, the team predicts that the GRS will continue to shrink before stabilizing into a less elongated shape than we see today. Currently it is particularly “wide” in width, but once it shrinks it will likely stabilize as the winds hold it in place.

The team hopes that understanding the GRS will lead to understanding the mechanisms of the solar system's largest storms, which would ultimately help us learn more about hurricane systems on Earth.

Juiced Bikes is providing gross sales amid rising indicators of chapter

A “20% off sitewide” banner at the top of a company’s website should usually be a source of joy for customers. Unless you're a fan of this company's products, its executives remain silent amid increasing signs that the company may be on the brink of bankruptcy.

That's what's happening with Juiced Bikes, the San Diego-based e-bike manufacturer.

According to numerous customer reports, Juiced Bikes has stopped responding to customer inquiries at all for some time now, while all of its products are sold out on its website. There are also numerous testimonies of layoffs in the company.

Even more worrying signs are mounting: The company's assets, including its existing product inventory, are showing up for sale on an auction website used by companies going out of business.

Additionally, a lawsuit has been filed in New York against parent company Juiced Inc. and Juiced Bike founder Tora Harris, according to Trellis, a state court legal research platform.

Founded in 2009 by Harris, a U.S. high jump Olympian, Juiced Bikes was one of the first pioneers of direct-to-consumer e-bike brands in the U.S. market.

The company's e-bikes have developed a loyal fan base over the years. Last year Digital Trends named the Juiced Bikes Scorpion

The company has so far remained silent about all of the reports. However, if bankruptcy is confirmed, it could rightly be attributed to the post-pandemic whiplash that the e-bike industry has experienced in recent years.

The Covid-19 pandemic had led to a huge increase in demand for e-bikes, while at the same time supply chains were severely restricted. This led to a ramp-up in e-bike production to meet high demand. But as consumer demand fell after the pandemic, e-bike manufacturers were left with large surpluses of inventory.

The good news is that the downturn may soon be over as the industry is experiencing a wave of mergers and acquisitions, says a report by Houlihan Lokey.

That may mean that even if Juiced Bikes does go under, the brand and its products could find a buyer and resurface on roads and trails.

Die Bundeskosten für die Deckung dieser Medikamente würden von 1,6 Milliarden US-Dollar im Jahr 2026 auf 7,1 Milliarden US-Dollar im Jahr 2034 steigen, sagte das CBO.

Aber wie könnte sich die Medicare-Abdeckung dieser Behandlungen auf den Zugang auswirken?

Wenn Medicare diese Medikamente übernimmt, hätten laut CBO ab 2026 mehr als 12,5 Millionen Leistungsempfänger erneut Anspruch auf Medikamente zur Gewichtsreduktion. Die Analyse ergab, dass etwa 2 % dieser Patienten die Behandlungen voraussichtlich im ersten Jahr in Anspruch nehmen werden.

Laut CBO gelten mehr als zwei Drittel der Medicare-Leistungsempfänger laut ihrem Body-Mass-Index als fettleibig oder übergewichtig.

Insbesondere könnten die Ausgaben nach 2034 etwas anders aussehen.

Der CBO sagte, dass die Medicare-Ausgaben für Medikamente zur Gewichtsabnahme aufgrund der geringeren mit den Medikamenten verbundenen Kosten und der zunehmenden Einsparungen pro Benutzer wahrscheinlich niedriger ausfallen würden. Aber die Medicare-Abdeckung dieser Behandlungen würde die Nettokosten des Bundes von 2034 bis 2044 immer noch erhöhen, stellte das CBO fest.

Sobald Ihre Lingo-Sensoren eingetroffen sind, können Sie sie ganz einfach verwenden. Ich habe die Lingo-App heruntergeladen, einige grundlegende biologische Informationen eingegeben und mich darauf vorbereitet, den Sensor an meinem Arm anzubringen. Die App führt Sie durch jeden Schritt und ist leicht zu befolgen.

Ich begann damit, meinen Applikator zusammenzubauen, das Werkzeug, das den Sensor in den Oberarm einführt. Im Applikator befindet sich eine Nadel, aber letztendlich sitzt ein flexibler Faden unter der Haut unterhalb des Sensors.

Normalerweise habe ich keine Angst vor Nadeln, aber ich musste mich ein wenig anstrengen, um Lingo anwenden zu können. Man muss den Applikator fest auf die Rückseite des Arms drücken, deshalb war es ein wenig einschüchternd, das selbst zu machen. Um Stelo mit dem Applikator von Dexcom aufzutragen, musste ich nur auf eine Schaltfläche klicken.

Irgendwann fasste ich den Mut, auf meinen Sensor zu treten, und das war wirklich kein Grund zur Sorge. Ich hatte zwar leichte Schmerzen, diese ließen jedoch nach etwa 10 Minuten nach. Als meine 14 Tage abgelaufen waren und es Zeit war, meinen Sensor auszutauschen, fühlte ich mich beim zweiten Mal viel wohler.

Lingo ist wirklich einfach zu tragen. Während ich schlafe, merke ich den Sensor nicht und kann damit alle meine üblichen Kleidungsstücke tragen. Ich würde nur empfehlen, beim Anziehen von langen Ärmeln etwas Vorsicht walten zu lassen, damit es nicht hängen bleibt. Um den Sensor zu entfernen, ziehen Sie ihn wie ein Pflaster ab.

Der Sensor benötigt eine Stunde zum Aufwärmen und beginnt dann mit der Übertragung Ihrer Echtzeit-Glukosewerte an die Lingo-App. Eines der Hauptziele von Abbott besteht darin, Benutzern dabei zu helfen, mehr über Glukosespitzen zu erfahren, und hier glänzt die App wirklich.

Glukosespitzen treten auf, wenn die im Blutkreislauf vorhandene Zuckermenge schnell ansteigt und dann abnimmt. Sie treten häufig nach dem Essen auf, können aber auch durch Stress, Bewegung und andere Faktoren verursacht werden. Laut Abbott können die Begrenzung von Spitzen und die Verbesserung des Glukosemanagements den Benutzern dabei helfen, ihren Schlaf und ihre Stimmung zu verbessern, ihr Gewicht zu kontrollieren und proaktiv auf ihre zukünftige Gesundheit zu achten.

Um Benutzern dabei zu helfen, die Auswirkungen ihrer Spitzen zu verstehen, hat das Unternehmen eine Metrik namens „Lingo Count“ erstellt. Dabei handelt es sich um einen Algorithmus, der jeder Glukosespitze einen numerischen Wert zuordnet, der darstellen soll, wie erheblich die Auswirkung ist.

Für jeden Tag haben Benutzer eine Ziel-Lingo-Anzahl, die sie unterschreiten möchten, und diese passt sich mit der Zeit Ihrem Körper an. Mein Lingo Count-Ziel lag ursprünglich bei 60, jetzt sind es 44.

Es ist eine wirklich hilfreiche Möglichkeit, sich die Auswirkungen Ihrer Ernährung auf Ihren Körper vorzustellen. Als ich zum Beispiel einen griechischen Vanillejoghurt aß, erhöhte sich mein Lingo Count um 5 Punkte, und als ich ein paar Bonbons aß, kamen 14 hinzu. Es ist fast intuitiv, aber es hilft wirklich dabei, diese gesunden Gewohnheiten in meinem Kopf zu festigen. Ich habe es nicht jeden Tag geschafft, unter meinem Ziel zu bleiben, aber ich verstehe viel besser, warum das so ist und woran ich arbeiten kann.

Mir gefiel auch, dass ich tiefer in meine Lingo Count-Daten einsteigen konnte. Benutzer können ihre Lingo-Zählung im Laufe einer Woche, eines Monats oder über den gesamten Zeitraum hinweg anzeigen. Es zeigt Ihnen auch, zu welcher Tageszeit Sie die größten Spitzen verspüren, was in meinem Fall normalerweise der Abend ist.

Um Lingo Count optimal nutzen zu können, müssen Sie Ihre Mahlzeiten und Ihr Training in der App protokollieren. Dies ist im Großen und Ganzen unkompliziert, aber die App kann von Zeit zu Zeit fehlerhaft sein. Oft muss ich wiederholt auf die Eingabefelder tippen, bevor ich etwas eingeben oder eine Auswahl treffen kann, aber irgendwann klappt es bei mir immer.

Lingo Count ist das Kronjuwel des Lingo-Erlebnisses, aber die App bietet auch viele andere nette Funktionen. Abbott hat beispielsweise eine Registerkarte voller Herausforderungen, die dabei helfen sollen, Benutzer zu schulen und sie im Laufe ihres Tages zu motivieren.

Die Herausforderungen machen Spaß und beinhalten normalerweise kleine Änderungen, die Sie vornehmen können, um Glukosespitzen zu reduzieren. Sie können entscheiden, wie viele Tage jede Herausforderung dauert. Eine Herausforderung, die ich gemeistert habe, ermutigte mich, meine Küche nach dem Abendessen zu schließen, um spätabendliche Snacks zu vermeiden. Diese Woche fordere ich mich heraus, drei Liter Wasser pro Tag zu trinken.

Abbott stellt Lingo-Benutzern auch zahlreiche Artikel, Videos und Rezepte auf der Registerkarte „Entdecken“ zur Verfügung. Ich empfehle, diese durchzugehen, insbesondere wenn Sie neu im Bereich Glukosemanagement sind. Ich denke, dass das Unternehmen gute Arbeit leistet, wenn es darum geht, Glukose im Klartext zu erklären.

Ich bin nicht besonders gut darin, ein ausgewogenes Frühstück zu essen, deshalb habe ich einige von Abbotts Rezepten für Omelettes und Overnight Oats ausprobiert. Ich werde auf jeden Fall in Zukunft auf viele davon zurückkommen.

Im Großen und Ganzen habe ich meine Erfahrung mit Lingo sehr genossen und es ist ein Tool, das ich auf jeden Fall meiner Familie und meinen Freunden empfehlen würde. Es ist einfach zu verwenden und zu tragen, und Lingo Count hat mir geholfen, besser zu verstehen, wie sich meine Ernährungsgewohnheiten im Laufe der Zeit auf meinen Körper auswirken.

An unidentified elderly woman was reportedly beheaded after allegedly jumping from the 28th floor of an apartment building in New York City.

Here's what allegedly happened to the elderly woman who was reportedly found decapitated

According to the New York Post, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, at the Park Regis Apartments on New York City's Upper East Side. New York police officers and witnesses reportedly told the newspaper that the woman jumped from the 28th floor of the building.

Her body reportedly became caught on the side of the building and she was decapitated.

“I just stopped as she was laying there, she had no head,” a Park Regis resident reportedly told the outlet Saturday.

According to the Daily Mail, the incident also occurred in front of “horrified wedding guests.”

“Everyone ran towards the body, but it was gone,” another witness told reporters, according to PEOPLE.

Here's what will reportedly happen next in the investigation

According to the New York Post, the New York Police Department has not released the woman's identity. Additionally, the department has not publicly stated why the woman may have taken her own life. Still, the NYPD has reportedly said that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the woman's cause of death, according to the Daily Mail.

“The investigation is ongoing,” the NYPD said in a statement. “The identity of the deceased will be withheld until the family is properly notified.”

A 15-year-old girl was recently electrocuted and decapitated by power lines

As The Shade Room previously reported, a 15-year-old Guatemalan girl named Débora Rebeca Xi Artola made headlines in August. On August 1, Artola reportedly accompanied three of her friends on a rooftop. The group was reportedly dancing and taking photos when Artolo allegedly hit a “high voltage wire.”

Artola was then shocked and caught on film as her body fell onto the street. In addition, the 15-year-old was reportedly beheaded.

Ultimately, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to raise funds to “start legal proceedings to bring to justice” the people responsible for the 15-year-old's death.

“The authorities in Guatemala claimed that it was a careless accident, but there were several witnesses[es] have different opinions. “Debora had to be pushed to reach the high-voltage cables that cut her head and ended her life,” the campaign description reads.

At this time, no update on the investigation into the tragic incident has been publicly released.

Thanks, CBS Information, for presenting the reality about when the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. historical past occurred – do you agree?

A recent CBS News story titled “Top 10 Deadliest Hurricanes in U.S. History” presents a factual discussion of the 10 deadliest hurricanes to hit the United States. Refreshingly, CBS didn't try to blame the deadly hurricanes on climate change.

The post first cites the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project's prediction that this season would be “well above average” for major hurricanes making landfall in the United States and the Caribbean. While some media outlets, including CBS in other stories (covered here by Climate Realism), are trying to cram a narrative about human-caused climate change into stories about this hurricane season, that's not the case in this case. Instead, it simply lists the ten storms with the highest fatalities, and the post itself actually serves to undermine climate alarmists' claims about the “unprecedented” nature of the recent storms.

Of the ten storms listed:

  • 4 happened before 1900;
  • The Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900 killed the most people, killing up to 12,000 people;
  • Only Katrina (1,200 deaths in Louisiana, 2005) and Maria (2,975 deaths in Puerto Rico, 2017) occurred within the last three decades.

However, it is an open question whether Maria should actually be included on the list, as the death toll from the hurricane itself stood at 64. The figure of 2,975 comes from a counterfactual attribution study, such as that previously criticized by climate realism here and here: In it, the authors examined historical death patterns in and around the time of the hurricane and attributed all additional deaths to the hurricane – an “estimate of how “Many people would have died if Hurricane Maria had not hit the island.” If attribution studies had been conducted for every single hurricane on the list, the death toll would likely have been much higher.

Helene currently has a death toll of 238, according to the report, but that number is likely to rise as more rubble is searched and missing people are identified. At the time of writing, there are no death statistics available for Milton.

No clear pattern can be seen in this data for two main reasons.

First, there is no pattern of increasingly severe storms. The available data on hurricanes and tropical cyclones simply does not show that hurricanes are becoming more intense, severe, or frequent over time. Climate Realism has covered the data dozens of times, sometimes at the state level. Even the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) agrees, noting in its 2021 AR6 Working Group Report that identifying past trends in tropical storm metrics is “challenging.”

There has been no trend in global tropical cyclone frequency or global accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) since more accurate data collection began in the 1970s. (See images below)

Although the population in the coastal hurricane bullseye zone is much larger today than in the past, most of the ten deadliest hurricanes occurred in the recent past. Why? Due to improved early warning systems that have resulted in evacuations and infrastructure across the United States becoming hardened against severe weather due to stricter construction standards and technology. In addition, modern generators have prevented many deaths due to weather and have also ensured the speed at which emergency responders can get to communities and restore power. These improvements would not have been possible without fossil fuels and their byproducts, which climate alarmists want to eliminate.

Every deadly storm is a tragedy, and downplaying the danger and damage of tropical cyclones is as much a mistake as it is to exaggerate them and try to link them to climate change. In this case, CBS provided a simple, factual report on the grim history of major hurricane landfalls in the United States and its territories. Bravo, CBS.
