Eliminating tax rebates for electrical autos may significantly hurt gross sales of Tesla, Chevrolet and Volkswagen, a examine says

Many analysts expect electric vehicle sales to decline if the new Trump administration moves forward with plans to eliminate the $7,500 federal tax incentive for purchasing and leasing electric vehicles.

While forecasts vary, with some predicting this would result in a 27% drop in demand for electric vehicles, research firm JD Power went a step further and asked consumers how rebates would have influenced their decision to purchase an electric vehicle.

JD Power's study confirmed that federal tax credits played a critical role in consumer decisions: 64% of premium electric vehicle owners said incentives were a primary reason for their decision to purchase or lease their electric vehicle. 49% of mass market electric vehicle owners chose their vehicle based on tax credits and incentives.

More specifically, the survey found that Volkswagen, Chevrolet and Tesla owners were most influenced by the incentives: tax credits and incentive programs were cited as the main reason for the purchase by 81% of Volkswagen buyers, 77% of Chevrolet buyers and 72% of buyers called % of Tesla buyers.

In contrast, only 32% of Hyundai buyers, 24% of Kia buyers and 21% of Toyota buyers said tax credits and incentives were a primary reason for choosing their vehicle.

The results suggest a different impact than what Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a close adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, recently predicted. Musk recently gave his blessing to eliminating federal incentives for electric vehicles, saying the move would likely be “devastating” for Tesla's competitors but would have little impact on his company.

Several trade groups, including the Zero Emission Transportation Association (ZETA), whose members include companies such as Tesla, Waymo, Rivian and Uber, have advocated for maintaining federal incentives for both the production and sales of electric vehicles.

According to ZETA, the incentives have helped domestic manufacturers of electric vehicles and their components such as batteries and increased job opportunities across the U.S., including in many Republican-led states such as Ohio, Kentucky and Georgia, as well as Michigan.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs accomplished the first of their 2024 goals on Black Friday, clinching a playoff spot with their 19-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

It was another ugly win that was too close for comfort for the reigning Super Bowl champions after they turned a 13-point fourth-quarter lead into a one-possession lead in the third quarter. The Raiders seemed poised to pull off a major upset when they got into field goal position with 14 seconds left, trailing by two points. But an illegal shift penalty and an offensive turnover cost Las Vegas the chance to score a game-winning field goal.

Next, the Chiefs hope to win their ninth straight AFC West championship. They can clinch the division title by beating the Los Angeles Chargers on December 8th at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs also lead the rest of the AFC in the battle for the conference's playoff spot at 11-1.

Describe the game in two words: Pacheco is back. Running back Isiah Pacheco played in a Week 2 game for the first time since breaking his leg. Pacheco made a great play on a third-quarter field goal drive with a 34-yard run.

Promising trend: The Chiefs, who had just two sacks in their last two games, sacked Las Vegas quarterback Aidan O'Connell three times. Defensive tackle Chris Jones hadn't had a sack since a Week 4 game against the Chargers, but dropped O'Connell twice.

Amazing statistics: Quarterback Patrick Mahomes' second-quarter touchdown pass to receiver Justin Watson had a completion probability of 26.6%, according to Next Gen Stats. That's his lowest touchdown pass completion probability since 2021, when he had a fourth-quarter touchdown throw to Darrel Williams in Week 10 against the Raiders (22%).

Forecast for next week: Cornerback Josh Williams remains in the starting lineup. He replaced Nazeeh Johnson in the second quarter against the Raiders after Johnson was badly hit on a long pass. Williams, who has played well at times for the Chiefs, was an improvement over Johnson. – Adam Teicher

Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce raised more than a few eyebrows when he acknowledged a certain narrative surrounding the Black Friday game, saying it was “the best team in football against the worst team in football.” However, neither team seemed to play their part in the Chiefs' victory. Everything goes out the window in rivalry games, and there's something special about holiday week games at Arrowhead, especially since the Raiders upset the Chiefs there last Christmas. Pragmatically speaking, spooking the two-time defending Super Bowl champions is the definition of a moral victory for Las Vegas, while the loss keeps the Raiders, who need reinforcements for a rebuild, on track for a top-three draft pick.

Most surprising performance: Kicker Daniel Carlson missed three field goals. Sure, there were three long attempts – from 56, 55 and 58 yards – and all in the cold. But what made the misses so surprising was that Carlson had made 18 straight field goals before narrowly missing on the first and third and missing the second ball to the left side.

Promising trend: The Raiders entered the game with the worst rushing attack in the NFL, averaging 74.6 yards on the ground per game. They rushed for 116 yards against the Chiefs, who started the day with the No. 3 rush defense.

Forecast for next week: More deep balls. In fact, vertical play is ingrained in the Raiders' DNA, so it shouldn't be surprising if Las Vegas makes more attacks from deep next week in Tampa Bay. There is a persistent talent shortage in the Dutch labor market, according to a new salary survey report.

The study also shows that when hiring in 2025, artificial intelligence, automation and machine learning are expected to be among the hottest functional areas where companies are most likely to hire talent next year.

Accordingly, a recent study by Indeed found that over the past year, the number of job postings mentioning generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) or related terms in the United States and Europe has increased dramatically.

More information from BairesDev will be of particular interest to software developers who may be job hunting in 2025. The company recently conducted research on more than 500 companies to find out which skills are most sought after by customers.

It turned out that machine learning was the fastest growing skill with a growth rate of 383%, followed by Angular, Flutter, Kotlin and Terraform.

The increasing interest in AI also leads to an increasing need for core technical skills that are essential for the development of AI platforms and applications. This includes technologies such as React, .NET, Python, Node and Java.

The report also notes that this year demand for data infrastructure-related skills increased by 77%.

“Over the last five years, we have seen a steady and sometimes sharp increase in demand for developers specializing in tools such as Snowflake, MongoDB and Databricks, among others,” says Justice Erolin, CTO of BairesDev.

“If AI is a gold rush and you're a developer, you might want to sell the pickaxes. In this case, the picks are data-related capabilities, because a well-maintained data infrastructure is the engine that drives a successful AI product.”

Skills gaps arise

This is all useful information for software professionals seeking career advancement in 2025. But alongside these predictions there is also a warning about the urgent need for the right talent to meet growing demand, with a lack of technical skills emerging as a barrier.

Worryingly, according to the European Digital Economy and Society Index, one in three people in the EU have basic digital skills. According to the European Center for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop), future average employment growth in the Netherlands is estimated at 0.3% for the period 2022-2035, but when it comes to ICT roles this figure is much higher at 12.9% higher. .

However, this number could be offset by a variety of factors contributing to the tech skills shortage.

One factor is rapid digital transformation, and as companies come under pressure to modernize their operations to remain competitive, this is leading to a significant increase in the need for technical talent.

And given this concern about the lack of technical expertise, more good news is that 30% of software developers in the Netherlands have a master's degree in a specialty related to software engineering.

Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Utrecht and Rotterdam are just some of the cities where software developers can look for jobs. This is thanks to homegrown giants Booking.com, ING Bank, Unilever, Philips and Heineken.

Dairy cows obtain artificial components of their feed to attain web zero – isn't that an issue?

Europe's largest dairy company is facing a backlash after giving cows a synthetic additive to their feed to reduce their methane emissions.

Arla, which makes brands such as Lurpak butter and Cravendale milk, said it was working with Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi to give cows the additive Bovaer on a trial basis.

Thirty of Arla's 9,000 farmers will test how the additives can be integrated into normal feeding routines, with the aim of then introducing Bovaer more widely.

Arla said Bovaer has been proven to reduce methane emissions from cows by about 27 percent.

Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi said it was a “great opportunity to explore where we can drive change at scale to reduce emissions”.

However, the announcement sparked a backlash on social media as some shoppers expressed concerns about the use of additives in their food.

Some even went so far as to say they would no longer shop at the supermarkets involved in the trial, while others urged grocers to label any products that may have come from the farms that used the additive.

There is no indication that the additive is unsafe for consumers as the UK Food Standard Agency has approved it for use.

The regulator also said Bovaer posed an “acceptable” risk to the environment.

Startup hopes to stop deaths throughout being pregnant and childbirth

According to the World Health Organization, more than 2 million babies died in the first 20 days of their lives in 2022, accounting for about 6,500 deaths per day.

In addition, nearly 800 women died every day from “preventable causes” during pregnancy or childbirth in 2020, an “unacceptably high” number, the WHO said.

A Singapore-based startup, Biorithm, hopes to help solve the problem with a device that allows women to monitor their pregnancy at home, while a connected mobile app transmits information such as the baby's heart rate directly to doctors for review.

“Women’s Health [care] is designed to treat sick women, not stay healthy,” said Amrish Nair, chief technology officer and co-founder of Biorithm.

“We're trying to provide technology that puts the power back in the hands of women… It's no longer about the hospital, but about women having the opportunity to be treated at the place of their choice,” he told CNBC “CNBC Tech: The Edge.”

Biorithm's device, Femom, monitors both maternal and fetal heart rates and is designed to be easy to use, using the woman's navel as a guide for precise placement. It can be used during labor and provides doctors with information for intervention when necessary.

According to Sihem Tedjar, product development manager at Biorithm, monitoring takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

“It’s very easy to use for an untrained person or a non-health care professional, and that’s where the ease of use and all the design work lies,” Tedjar said. Femom's five electrodes detect electrical signals on the surface of the abdomen and transmit information to a dashboard that medical staff can access.

A “breakdown of maternal care”

Nair said in an online press release that there has been a “collapse in maternal care” due to socioeconomic factors and a lack of monitoring technology.

In 2016, the WHO sought to improve prenatal care and reduce the risk of pregnancy complications by issuing guidelines to increase the number of contacts a pregnant woman has with health care providers between the ages of four and eight.

According to Fortune Business Insights, the global medical device market is expected to grow from $542 billion in 2024 to $887 billion in 2032. Biorithm was spun out from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and Femom is in development and used in clinical research settings.

The Singapore government is investing heavily in its healthcare sector and in 2023, Biorithm raised $3.5 million in Series A funding from government agency Enterprise Singapore and Adaptive Capital Partners. The funds will be used to develop Femom and expand the company in the US and Southeast Asia.

“Women's health has always faced a very difficult funding situation. It has never been the hottest topic in medical technology,” Nair told CNBC.

“From the beginning we had funds that invested in us, and now there are funds run by women who invested in us,” he said.

“We're seeing the funding landscape evolving, and it's really encouraging for women's health. Although much more needs to be done, it is certainly a start,” said Nair.

How a lot are asteroids actually value?

Popular media loves to talk about asteroid mining with big numbers. Many articles talk about a mission to Psyche, the largest metallic asteroid in the asteroid belt, as visiting a body worth 1000000000000000000000000, presumably because their authors like to press the “0” key on their keyboards. But how realistic is this assessment? And what does it actually mean? A paper funded by Astroforge, an asteroid mining startup based in Huntington Beach, and written by a professor at the Colorado School of Mine's Space Resources Program, examines in detail what metals are available on asteroids and whether they are actually the case is worth as much as the simple calculations suggest.

The paper divides metals on asteroids into two different types – those that would be worth returning to Earth and those that would not. In fact, the only metals worthy of a return to Earth are the platinum group metals (PGM), known for their exceptionally high cost, relatively low supply, and high utility in a variety of modern technologies. This also includes catalytic converters, which is why they are often the target of thieves.

The other category would be metals used for construction in space, such as iron, aluminum and magnesium. Although their relatively low prices on our home planet make it economically unwise to send them back to Earth, they are useful in space for building large structures such as space stations or solar arrays. Given the chicken-and-egg problem of no demand for these space-derived metals because they are so expensive, it is difficult to quantify their value. However, competition (e.g. launching the material from Earth) is affordable, costing $10,000 per kilogram, plus $100 per kilogram for a common material like iron.

While these prices are nowhere near the $500,000 per kilogram that a PGM like rhodium ever commands on Earth, it could still make iron mining on asteroids economically viable if the material is used in space. What do all of these calculations mean for the actual value of the asteroids we could mine?

First and most importantly, recent research suggests that “pure metal” asteroids, as Psyche is believed, are likely pure fiction. While that may not be good news for a single harmless asteroid that's worth a lot, the other part of this research is that even asteroids originally thought to have relatively low metal content actually have reasonable amounts, that could be economically supported.

To prove this, the paper examined in detail a series of meteorite studies, which represent the equivalent of leftover asteroids, and compared the “contents” of 83 different elements with ores found on or near Earth's surface. Because remote sensing makes it difficult to distinguish between some of these elements, meteorite samples that can be subjected to advanced analytical techniques are our best bet for accurately calculating the chemical composition of asteroids, aside from the few samples of intact asteroids obtained in this way were returned far.

These data showed that although the concentration of PGM is lower than originally thought (based on an assumption made in a fundamental paper on the composition of asteroids), it is still present in much higher concentrations than the corresponding terrestrial ores. In particular, a material known as a refractory metal nugget (RMN) could have PGM concentrations orders of magnitude higher than anything found on Earth or other types of asteroid material.

RMNs are mainly found in a calcium-aluminum inclusion structure (CAI), mainly on L-type asteroids. L-types are relatively rare asteroids with a reddish color, but we have not yet visited them. However, they could consist of more than 30% CAIs, in which case they could contain a significant amount of extractable PGMs without additional processing.

However, RMNs themselves are very small, in the micrometer to submicrometer range, which makes them extremely difficult to process in the first place. Therefore, mass extraction from asteroid regolith could be up to hundreds of ppm, which is already several orders of magnitude higher than their concentration in Earth's regolith.

Looking at the metals for use in space, they are about as abundant as originally predicted, but they are difficult to process from their oxidized state. Typically this requires a high-energy process, such as electrolysis of molten regolith, to break out the elemental metal needed for further processing. Again, the chicken-and-egg problem is having a power source large enough to perform these processes, but building it would require the material the power source would require.

Eventually this problem will go away as companies like AstroForge get their way. Remember that the company funded this study and that its two co-founders and Kevin Cannon, the professor at CSM, were co-authors. The company plans to launch its next mission in January, a rendezvous with near-Earth asteroids to find out if they are “metallic.” Perhaps this mission will contribute to our growing understanding of the composition and value of the asteroids around us.

Volvo's EX90 electrical SUV options an Abbey Street sound system

As deliveries of Volvo's highly anticipated EX90 model finally arrive in the US, drivers who are also music fans may be heartened when they discover what the electric SUV's sound system is made of.

They might even have a cosmic experience if they choose to play the Beatles' 1965 classic “Drive My Car” on this sound system: The EX90 is the first vehicle ever to feature an Abbey Road Studios mode , which offers sound quality developed directly from the most famous music recording studios in the world. The Beatles wrote Abbey Road into history when they named the studio after their final album in 1969.

In addition to the Beatles, countless artists – from Pink Floyd and Radiohead to Kanye West and Lady Gaga – have recorded at Abbey Road in London. The studios where stereo was first patented in 1933 are still home to numerous innovations in recording technology.

Over the years, Abbey Road engineers studied the sound architecture of the equipment they used before using the data to develop software plug-ins.

Inside the EX90, Abbey Road Studios mode is delivered via a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) system that promises to deliver “an innovative new sound technology designed to transform the in-car listening experience.”

Our test of the EX90's black and white system found that its Dolby Atmos feature produced “an impressive 3D effect.” However, this black and white system is only available in the higher-end EX90 Ultra class.

This year's introduction of the EX90, along with that of the EX30, a smaller and cheaper electric SUV, is part of Volvo's strategy to boost otherwise declining electric vehicle sales in the United States

The EX90 is also the Swedish automaker's first vehicle developed for the US market and also built in the US. The first EX90s rolled off the Volvo factory line in South Carolina in June.
