Walgreens inventory rises on Sycamore Companions deal report

People walk past a Walgreens on November 3, 2024 in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Danielle DeVries | CNBC

Shares of Walgreens The stock rose about 20% on Tuesday after news that the company was in talks to sell itself to private equity firm Sycamore Partners.

Walgreens and Sycamore have discussed a deal that could close early next year, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. New York-based Sycamore would likely sell parts of the Walgreens business or work with partners, the Journal reported.

A Walgreens spokesman declined to comment on the reported conversations.

The report comes at a difficult time for the pharmacy giant. The company's shares fell more than 60% for the year before rising on Tuesday.

Walgreens — under pressure from the transition out of the Covid pandemic, a leadership change, pharmacy reimbursement headwinds and its shaky foray into health care — fell short of Wall Street's earnings expectations for two straight quarters. In particular, Walgreens' pharmacy business is weakening as prescription drug reimbursement rates decline and multiple factors, such as inflation and increasing competition, put pressure on its stores.

The company is trying to regain its footing with a new CEO, healthcare industry veteran Tim Wentworth. Since taking office in October 2023, Wentworth has been committed to reducing costs at Walgreens.

In October, Walgreens announced that it plans to close around 1,200 of its drugstores over the next three years, including 500 in fiscal year 2025. Walgreens has around 8,700 locations in the US, a quarter of which are unprofitable. The company also scaled back its push into primary care by reducing its stake in primary care provider VillageMD.

Walgreens has reportedly been considered a potential private equity target in the past.

In 2019, private equity firm KKR made a roughly $70 billion takeover offer for the company, the Financial Times and Bloomberg reported at the time.

Based on S&P International, world electrical car gross sales are anticipated to extend by 30% in 2025

While trade wars, tariffs and fluctuating subsidies are entirely predictable for the automotive industry in 2025, global sales of electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to continue to grow significantly next year, according to S&P Global Mobility.

“2025 is expected to be a challenging year for the automotive industry as key regional demand factors limit demand potential and the new U.S. administration creates new uncertainty from day one,” said Colin Couchman, executive director of global light vehicle forecasting at S&P Global Mobility.

In the US, the new Trump administration reportedly plans to eliminate the $7,500 tax incentive when purchasing or leasing an electric vehicle, as well as other measures that support both the manufacturing and sales of electric vehicles.

In addition, Trump wants to impose high tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China, among others. The affected countries are expected to take countermeasures with their own tariffs.

However, despite these negative factors, electric vehicles remain an “important automotive growth sector” worldwide. S&P says incentive programs in China, Asia and Europe will continue to support electric vehicles for the foreseeable future.

S&P forecasts global electric vehicle sales will reach 15.1 million units in 2025, up 30% from an estimated 11.6 million units in 2024. Electric vehicle market share is expected to increase to 16.7% of global light vehicle sales, up from 13.2% in 2024.

China leads the way with an expected increase of 26.6 million electric vehicles in 2025, up 3% from 2024 levels, led by companies such as BYD, Changan and Tesla. The market share of electric vehicles is expected to reach 29.7% of China's vehicle sales.

Electric vehicle sales are also expected to grow strongly next year in India and Japan.

Even in the U.S., electric vehicle market share is expected to continue growing over 2024, surpassing the 10 percent mark to reach 11.2 percent of total vehicle sales, S&P says.

While Trump's policies are “predictably unpredictable,” S&P said deregulation should still create a tailwind for the North American auto industry.

Additionally, California has indicated that it will seek to revive state tax rebates for electric vehicles if the Trump administration eliminates federal incentives. Cumulative electric vehicle sales in California exceeded 2 million units in the third quarter, or nearly 40% of total U.S. electric vehicle sales.

Detroit Lions use starters to outlast San Francisco 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Should he? Or shouldn't he?

Ahead of the “Monday Night Football” showdown against the San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell debated whether to rest or start.

After careful consideration, he decided to join his top guys in a rematch of the 2023 NFC Championship Game, when the Lions swept Levi's Stadium with a 40-34 victory over the San Francisco 49ers while avoiding major injuries.

“Yes, it crossed my mind and I thought about it a lot. I thought about it leading up to the game, I thought about it last night,” Campbell said. “I told the staff, but in the end I came to the conclusion that playing against these guys was the right thing to do because we owe it to the team.”

“It was just one of those positions we sat in. It’s hard to say who you’re going to sit on and it’s not fair to ask guys to play who weren’t prepared,” he said. “So, yeah, that was tough, and I think the most important thing is that there were things we wanted to do better than last week, and we did that. We cleaned up a lot of things offensively.”

Campbell said the Lions are playing to win even though the game has no playoff implications. However, their pride was at stake after they blew a 17-point halftime lead against the same team last postseason and were one game away from reaching the Super Bowl.

This loss still hurts for those who suffered defeat that day.

“I really wanted to come back,” said Lions safety Kerby Joseph, who finished with two interceptions. “I feel like we came here last year and they beat us, so I still had that chip on my shoulder from last year. As they say in the media, this game didn't really mean much, but this game meant a lot. “I feel like we were so close and felt like we could come back here and get a win. I know we started slow defensively, but we got there. “

Lions quarterback Jared Goff agreed.

And upon his return home to California, he threw for 303 yards, completing 26 of 34 passes with 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.

Campbell made it clear that the starters were playing, so Goff came in with the mindset to compete and said he was “putting.” [the thought of sitting out] I went to bed pretty early in the week.” He threw three touchdowns in the seventh game of that season, tying Matthew Stafford (2011) for the most single-season touchdowns in Lions history.

“I'm sure it's tough for him, but I think it's the only option we know,” Goff said of Campbell, who plays in the starting lineup. “It's just about finding a way to win and win against the team we played in San Francisco. That's how our season ended last year, and there were a lot of people on this team who were there last year who wanted to get back in. Even though it was meaningless in many ways for them and for us, they were also proud. They also tried to beat us and it was a fun game.

Detroit now prepares to face the Minnesota Vikings at home on Sunday night with the NFC North Division title and No. 1 seed in the NFC on the line.

For Campbell, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Detroit joins the Cardinals, Texans, Buccaneers and Jets as one of five teams since seeding began in 1975 that has never been seeded No. 1.

“That’s what you’re in it for, man. At the end of the day, this is it,” Campbell said. “I mean, you couldn't write a better scenario. You couldn't have imagined that. The fact that both teams are 14-2 and going for the division and 1st place. It just doesn't get any better than this. It's like it's a fairy tale. And it speaks for itself.

Hostaway Secures $365 Million to Capitalize on Quick-Time period Rental Growth

Short-term rental platforms like Airbnb have changed travel. They have made it easier for tourists to access personalized private accommodation and made it easier for property owners to monetize their accommodation.

As global tourism is now on the right track complete recovery Post-COVID, Hostaway secured a cool $365 million at a $925 million valuation to capitalize on boom for short-term rentals.

Hostaway is a property management system (PMS) and software marketplace for the short-term rental industry. It will use the money to improve its dynamic pricing tools, further integrate AI and expand its presence in new markets, with a focus on France, Italy and Spain.

“Expanding into different regions and investing in innovative AI applications is something we have been focused on for over a year,” said co-founder and CEO Marcus Wheels in a blog post. “With this new strategic investment, we will strengthen these efforts and much more.”

The company said it was the first PMS to integrate ChatGPT into its platform. Future plans include adding or improving AI-powered personalized messaging, content creation and language translation.

Raeder was a co-founder of Hostaway Finland in 2015each alongside Mikko Nurminen (CFO) and Saber Kordestanchi (COO). when companies like Airbnb began to really disrupt a travel industry dominated by hotel chains and guest hostels.

The founders realized that while short-term rental platforms were easy for customers to use, managing things like bookings, pricing and communication was a bit of a headache for property owners. They created Hostaway to help property managers automate and manage short-term stays across multiple platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Vrbo.

The idea is that by automating tasks and making the data available on a single platform, Hostaway can save management time for property managers, allowing them to focus on customer service – which is crucial in a reviews-based industry. The platform also recently introduced dynamic pricing tools to optimize rates, potentially increasing revenue.

“Hostaway has emerged as an industry leader with a differentiated product tailored to the unique needs of short-term rental property managers, a dynamic and growing industry,” said Raph Osnoss, managing director at General Atlantic, a New York-based growth capital firm that led the financing round.

Hostaway also raised $170 million in its first major funding round last year. The company says its platform is used by customers in over 90 countries. Although Hostaway is officially based in Toronto, Canada, the company employs over 230 people in 44 countries who work fully remotely.

Hostaway is among a cohort of tech startups raising big money to make working in the hospitality industry easier. One of those is UK-based Lighthouse, which raised $370 million in November to expand its data intelligence platform for hotels. Another is Mews, based in Amsterdam educated $110 million in March With a valuation of over $1.2 billion, it became the first Dutch unicorn of the year. Then, in September, things plummeted another $100 millionto further develop and expand its PMS software.

RGGI Funding Proceed Efficiency in New York – sind Sie damit zufrieden?

Roger Caiazza

Erfolg – RGGI sammelt Spenden

Fehler – RGGI beeinflusst Emissionen

Abbildung 1: Jährliche CO2-Emissionen des New York State Electric Generating Unit nach Brennstofftyp

Die Emissionen stammen aus den Daten des EPA Clean Air Markets Program

Scheitern – Effektive RGGI-Investitionen

John Amos' son reacts to his sister's investigation into his father's dying

John Amos died in August, but at that time his son was Kelly Christopher When he announced his death, more than a month had already passed. Since then, the actor's daughter, Shannon AmosShe has launched an investigation into his death and hired a lawyer to fight her fight.

“The family deserves to know the full circumstances of Mr. Amos’ care and the events that led to his death,” Shannon Amos’ attorney reportedly said in a statement. “We are committed to exhausting all avenues available to ensure these questions are answered.”

But Kelly says there is no need for war, and a private investigator said there was no evidence of “foul play” in the actor's death. Here's the he-said-she-said between the siblings and what else has been reported about the family conflict.

KC Amos responds to sister's elder abuse allegations

As previously reported, KC announced the death on October 1st, but his father had already died on August 21st. He also said the “Good Times” actor died of heart failure in Los Angeles. He was 84.

Shannon's attorney, James H. Davis III, confirmed to PEOPLE that she has sought legal help to resolve her father's death. For what seemed like the second time, she directly accused her brother of elder abuse. Shannon reportedly wants more information about her father's admission to Centinela Hospital and his condition at the time. She claimed someone falsely impersonating her dropped John off at the hospital. Shannon claims she made three formal requests asking for his medical records but received no response.

Additionally, she wants the LAPD and Adult Protective Services to provide summaries of their investigations into her previous allegations of abuse against John Amos.

Meanwhile, Kelly Christopher doesn't hesitate to fend off his sister's claims with his own receipts! He explained to PEOPLE the decisions made leading up to John Amos' death. He claimed John asked to go to Centinela Hospital because he trusted the medical staff. Additionally, he said his father asked him not to contact other family members and KC said he “complied with his request.”

“Let me be clear and transparent. “I, Gene Brummett or Belinda Foster did not physically, financially, emotionally or psychologically abuse or neglect my father,” KC said. “This was documented through an independent investigation by Homeland Security Services, Inc, Adult Protective Services and other law enforcement agencies. The reality is that he died of natural causes at the age of 84. Stop making it more than it is.”

Kelly also hired a defense investigator to conduct a “comprehensive two-year investigation” into financial discrepancies, including missing money and stolen material goods from his father in Colorado, Memphis, New Jersey and Los Angeles. Ultimately, investigator Kevin Faler said all charges against Kelly Christopher were dismissed in New Jersey.

“The current allegations of foul play and elder abuse are frivolous,” said Kevin Faler. “John Amos was a pleasure to work with and spend time with [K.C., Gene, and Belinda] He writes, produces and prays with them as a family and as a team. John died of natural causes at the age of 84. There was no foul play.”

Faler also cleared John Amos' longtime manager Belinda Foster of any wrongdoing. “John told me Belinda was more of a daughter to him than his own biological daughter.” the investigator told PEOPLE.

Daughter previously questioned John Amos' safety

Shannon Amos' death comes more than a year after she claimed her father was a victim of elder abuse and financial exploitation and was hospitalized in critical condition. She made the allegations in a GoFundMe campaign, claiming that John called her from the hospital in Memphis. Shannon did not provide details about who carried out the alleged abuse, but claimed that one of the people was a caregiver. Her GoFundMe campaign asked for $500,000 for alleged legal costs, care and aftercare.

But John Amos later denied his daughter's allegations of abuse in a video message from his hospital bed. The actor cited confusion over the fundraiser. He also seemed to imply that if anyone was mistreating him, it would be Shannon. He said they had problems that led to his hospitalization and said his daughter took advantage of him.

“She would be the main suspect – if that’s what you wanted.” John said. “I don’t know if that’s the right term or not. But she is the one I would attribute my elder abuse to. This is definitely a case of elder abuse.”

Additionally, his manager Belinda said his hospitalization was due to heart problems caused by fluid filling his lower body and abdomen. However, both denied that his medical scare was life-threatening.

Shannon Amos has not publicly responded to her brother's reaction to her investigation.

Ro, in collaboration with Eli Lilly, provides bottles of the burden loss drug Zepbound

Patients have access to Zepbound single-dose vials at Ro

Direct-to-consumer healthcare startup Ro announced Wednesday that its platform will now offer cheaper single-dose vials of the weight loss drug Zepbound through a new partnership with Eli Lillywhich aims to simplify access to the popular treatment.

Ro said it will provide a “complete end-to-end” experience on a single platform and app, allowing eligible patients to receive a diagnosis and prescription for Zepbound and have vials of the drug delivered to their home. This is made possible through a unique integration with Eli Lilly's direct-to-consumer website LillyDirect, which already offers home delivery of Zepbound bottles through a third-party digital pharmacy, Gifthealth.

Gifthealth will distribute the vials to patients who receive Zepbound prescriptions through a Ro-affiliated provider.

Zepbound Bottles are a cash-only product offered only through LillyDirect. This means patients pay for it themselves with cash at a lower cost than the auto-injection form of the drug. According to Ro, the vials have the “cheapest” price of a branded drug GLP-1 without insurance. Demand for GLP-1 drugs, which mimic gut hormones to suppress appetite and regulate blood sugar, has skyrocketed in the past two years.

“Patients typically have to go to multiple locations to get Lilly's medication, such as the doctor's office and then a pharmacy,” said Zachariah Reitano, co-founder and CEO of Ro, in an interview with CNBC. “This integration truly creates a seamless patient experience where they don’t have to go anywhere else. They can access doctors, labs and a pharmacy all in one place, giving them access to Zepbound vials.”

Ro runs a weight loss program that already prescribes Zepbound in a single-dose auto-injector pen that patients can inject directly under the skin with the push of a button. But this form of the drug is far more expensive than vials, costing about $1,000 a month without insurance.

Zepbound's 2.5-milligram and 5-milligram single-dose vials cost $399 per month and $549 per month, respectively, without insurance, making them more accessible to those who don't have insurance coverage for the drug. Eli Lilly began offering these bottles through LillyDirect in August.

“Whether you have insurance or you want the lowest priced cash-only branded GLP-1, which is the Zepbound vials, you can get it all by coming to Ro,” Reitano said, noting that Companies will help eligible patients determine which form of the drug is best for them based on their insurance.

He acknowledged that about $400 to $500 a month for Zepbound “is still out of reach for many, but now it's far more attainable than” $1,000 or more.

The popularity of expensive treatments like Zepbound and Novo NordiskWegovy, the weight-loss drug, has caused widespread shortages in the United States. This problem has now subsided after Eli Lilly and Nordisk made efforts to increase production capacity for the drugs.

Still, cheaper compounded versions of GLP-1 have gained traction given the limited supply of brand-name drugs. Eli Lilly is working to expand access to its branded product Zepbound, in what appears to be an attempt to crack down on compounded versions of the drug.

Patrik Jonsson, Eli Lilly's president of cardiometabolic health, said in a news release Tuesday that the goal of the new integration is to “break down barriers and provide patients with safe and effective options they can rely on.”

The FDA is currently reconsidering its decision to remove Zepbound from the drug shortage list after a lawsuit was filed by a trade association representing drug pharmacies. Removing Zepbound from this shortage list essentially prevents drug manufacturing pharmacies from producing customized versions of the drug.

If that happens, Reitano said Ro will “follow all applicable laws and FDA guidelines” as well as “fight to ensure our patients have access to the most effective and affordable products.”

MINNEAPOLIS – More than 100 people waited for a man in the Minnesota Vikings locker room Sunday night. Sam Darnold conducted two on-field interviews after his team's 27-25 victory over the Green Bay Packers, and no one – owners, coaches, players, front office staff – wanted to start the festivities without him.

So they waited for Darnold to speak with Fox Sports reporter Tom Rinaldi. Then they waited a few more minutes while Fox Sports analyst Tom Brady presented Darnold with his “LFG” trophy for the game.

“We felt like we waited a long time,” coach Kevin O'Connell said.

Meanwhile, linebacker Jonathan Greenard has put a plan in place to commemorate Darnold's arrival. They harassed him as he ran through the door, doused him with what linebacker Blake Cashman called a “waterfall” and finally lifted him onto their shoulders – all in honor of a season in which the Vikings are playing their biggest regular-season game in recent memory.

Darnold smiled during his postgame press conference with local reporters and even offered a rare glimpse into his personality by referencing the movie “Talladega Nights.”

“It was chaos,” Darnold said. “I think I lost consciousness then [players] grabbed me and lifted me up. I didn't know what to do with my hands in this situation, Ricky Bobby style. It was an interesting moment, but it was also fun to be so hugged by my teammates.”

The Vikings now face a winner-take-all matchup against the Detroit Lions in Week 18 to determine both the NFC North title and the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. None of this would have been possible without Darnold, who signed a one-year deal in March to serve as the short-term starter until rookie JJ McCarthy was ready to take over.

McCarthy's season-ending knee injury resulted in Darnold starting all 16 of the Vikings' games. He won 14, breaking the NFL record for most wins by a quarterback in his first season with a team. His season-high 377 passing yards gave him the first 4,000-yard season of his career, and his three touchdown passes on Sunday gave him 35 for the season, the fourth-most in NFL history for a quarterback in his first season with one Team.

“He's playing quarterback at a very, very high level,” O'Connell said, “and has been for most of the season. You can see that in the locker room. You can tell by the way I call plays. I know it. “To get where we want to go, we have to be aggressive and play football in a way that allows us to have the entire offense at our disposal.

In fact, O'Connell once again relied on Darnold to implement his unconventional but now unsurprising approach to closing out close games. When the Packers cut a 17-point deficit to two points in the fourth quarter, O'Connell didn't simply rely on his running game to call timeouts and/or force the Packers to use their timeouts. Instead, Darnold threw six of the Vikings' seven plays on the final two possessions before going down on the final three plays.

Darnold completed four of those passes for 46 yards, including a 6-yard floater to running back Cam Akers on third-and-2 – which Akers caught just inches from the ground – to seal the game.

“When guys do everything they can to stop the run, I know it.” [O’Connell] “Will be aggressive if that’s the case,” Darnold said. “Obviously there were times during the season where we tried to pull it off.” So it won't always be like that. But whenever he makes a pass in that situation, I’m always prepared for it, and I feel like our guys executed it really well.”

When the locker room emptied about 30 minutes later, Akers was one of the last players remaining. He was still grinning at what he called the “electric” moment.

“He deserves this,” Akers said. “He has put in a lot of work to be here and we are all behind him – the players and the staff.”

NASA has revealed a brand new picture of its new Mars helicopter.

Ingenuity became the first aircraft to fly on another world in the first half of 2021. It explored the Martian terrain from above and proved that powered air flight was a very efficient way to get around alien worlds. Now NASA has released a computer rendering of its next design, the Mars Chopper!

Ingenuity was a small helicopter, or rather a drone, transported to Mars in 2020 aboard the Perseverance rover mission. It was designed as a technology demonstration to prove that powered flight was possible in Mars' thin atmosphere. It made its first flight on April 19, 2021, hovering just 10 feet above the ground before landing safely again. Since then, Ingenuity has conducted 60 flights on Mars, helping to investigate and explore areas of interest for further study.

This view from NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter was created using data collected by the Mastcam-Z instrument aboard the agency's Perseverance Mars rover on August 2, 2023, the mission's 871st Martian day, or sol, a day before the 54th. Operating a drone in the Martian atmosphere poses challenges primarily due to the lower density. Compared to Earth, the atmosphere has less than 1% of the density of Earth's atmosphere. This means aircraft rotor blades have to work harder and generate more lift than their ground-based counterparts.

Density aside, particulate matter on Mars' surface is often ejected into the atmosphere, which could damage the delicate mechanisms of functioning spacecraft. These types of vehicles must not only be carefully designed for use in foreign atmospheres, but they must also be able to protect themselves from local hazards.

Following on from the success of the Ingeniuty drone, NASA has released a rendering of its next-generation aerial vehicle for aerial flight on Mars, known as the Mars Chopper. Ingenuity was a feasibility study that proved successful in air flight. The new aircraft on the drawing board have greater payload capacity for carrying scientific instruments such as imaging and analysis kits. This will allow them to carry out basic tasks such as exploration activities in support of future explorations, but also carry out analysis and terrain mapping work. Ultimately, we even support human exploration of Mars.

The released image shows a drone-like vehicle about the size of an SUV with six rotors. Each rotor has six blades, smaller than the Ingenuity's, but the combination can provide even more lift. The payload capacity of the chopper in its current design configuration is 5 kilograms at a distance of up to 3 km. The design is a collaboration between the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and the Ames Research Center.

This new model will represent a real turning point not only for the exploration of Mars, but also for the exploration of all extraterrestrial worlds with a solid surface and an atmosphere that allows flight. Ingenuity has been at the forefront of testing the technology, and now, with the new Mars' Choppers concept on the drawing board, aerial reconnaissance on these new worlds will greatly increase the value of ground-based exploration. Aerial remote sensing will also be invaluable in supporting human exploration where rovers cannot reach.
