A wise ring to rule all of them? Finnish startup Oura raises $200 million

Finnish startup Oura has closed its Series D funding round with $200 million, bringing the smart ring maker's valuation to a hefty $5.2 billion.

The Oura Smart Ring uses 20 biometric markers to track sleep, physical activity and stress resilience. The device displays this data in an app that gives you a personalized “readiness” score. We tested the wearable earlier this year and were really impressed.

Founded in 2013, Oura secured its first funding on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding website, in 2016. With this new tranche of capital, the technology startup has raised $550 million since its founding.

“We have made significant progress in advancing our mission to make health a daily practice and will use this funding to pursue new opportunities, with AI development at the core of our strategy,” said Tom Hale, CEO of Oura .

In 2022, Oura became a unicorn and sold his millionth ring. Two years later, the company claims to have recently sold its 2.5 millionth device and made $500 million in revenue this year alone.

“We know that Oura has the potential to transform lives on a massive scale, and we are excited to continue to be leaders in innovation while pursuing opportunities that extend beyond the ring,” said Hale.

Oura said it signed partnerships with major retailers such as Amazon and Target this year. The ring is particularly popular with celebrities – including Prince Harry, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston. Even the Pentagon awarded a $96 million contract in October to install the devices in (or should I say “on”) Hands of soldiers.

Love them or hate them, robotaxis are sure to make headlines in 2024. And aside from the glamorous, sci-fi-inspired marketing surrounding Tesla's recently unveiled Cybercab robot taxi, safety has remained a recurring theme in one way or another.

Earlier this year, a survey found that the majority of the U.S. public (68%) expressed safety concerns when asked how they feel about deploying self-driving vehicles (SDVs) on public roads. Yet within that majority, more than half believe that SDV safety issues can be solved or that SDVs will actually be safer than humans.

It's no wonder that Alphabet-owned Waymo, which offers the only functioning robotaxi service in the U.S., is putting a lot of energy into addressing these concerns.

Now, in a just-released research study with insurance company Swiss Re, Waymo says its Waymo Driver service has better safety performance metrics than human drivers.

The study compared insurance claims against Waymo with those against human drivers, using Swiss Re's data from over 500,000 claims and over 200 billion claims miles. Compared to humans, the data for the Waymo driver showed an 88% decrease in property damage claims and a 92% decrease in personal injury claims.

In real terms, the service was only involved in nine property damage claims and two bodily injury claims over the 25.3 million miles already driven by the Waymo driver. According to Swiss Re, human drivers would face 78 property damage and 26 bodily injury claims for the same distance.

“This analysis complements our safety impact data showing that over 25 million fully autonomous miles, Waymo drivers had fewer serious collisions than human drivers, regardless of who was at fault,” Waymo says in its blog.

So far, Waymo, an Alphabet-owned company, has been the only robotaxi service provider to convince U.S. regulators of the safety of its technology.

On the other hand, General Motors-backed Cruise had to stop testing last year after one of its vehicles fatally struck a pedestrian. GM also recently announced that it would stop funding Cruise altogether.

As for Tesla, regulators have opened an investigation into 2.4 million Tesla vehicles equipped with full self-driving software after three reported collisions and one fatal accident. Tesla still hopes to launch its Cybercab robotaxi as a service in 2025.

Winery Offshore halts main wind venture amid financial and political challenges – do you agree?

The offshore wind industry suffered another setback when Vineyard Offshore announced the withdrawal of an 800 MW wind energy project from the procurement process in Massachusetts. The decision follows Connecticut's refusal to participate in a tri-state wind energy agreement, leaving Vineyard unable to secure contracts for the entire 1,200 MW Vineyard Wind 2 project. The fragmented approach across states also highlights the difficulty of coordinating renewable energy policies across jurisdictions. Despite shared interests, different priorities and economic considerations have hampered efforts to create a unified regional framework for offshore wind development.

Merck indicators licensing settlement for weight reduction tablets with Hansoh Pharma

Merck announced Wednesday that it has secured the rights to an experimental weight-loss pill from Chinese drugmaker Hansoh Pharma in a deal worth up to $2 billion.

The oral drug has not yet been tested in humans, and Merck has not specified which diseases it plans to test the drug on first. Still, it increases the drug company's chances of capturing a slice of the booming obesity drug market, which some analysts expect to be worth more than $100 billion a year by the early 2030s.

Several other drug manufacturers including Pfizer And Rocheare seeking to develop more practical obesity pills that can compete with the blockbuster injections from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly.

Under the agreement, Merck will receive the exclusive worldwide license to develop, manufacture and commercialize Hansoh Pharma's HS-10535, an experimental oral drug that targets a gut hormone called GLP-1. Novo Nordisks The popular weight loss drug Wegovy and the diabetes drug Ozempic also target GLP-1 to suppress appetite and regulate blood sugar.

According to a press release, Merck Hansoh will pay $112 million upfront for the rights to the drug, with the potential for an additional $1.9 billion in milestone payments and royalties.

Merck said its fourth-quarter results will include a pretax charge of $112 million, or 4 cents per share.

In the press release, Dean Li, president of Merck Research Laboratories, said the oral drug “has the potential to provide additional cardiometabolic benefits beyond weight reduction.”

Merck CEO Rob Davis said early last year that the company was looking for GLP-1 treatments with benefits beyond weight loss.

“I think everyone recognizes that weight management is difficult to reimburse. But if you can demonstrate cardiovascular outcomes, if you can demonstrate diabetes outcomes, which you're starting to see data for, if you can see benefits in fatty liver disease…” “That's an area where we think there's opportunity,” he said at the time at a conference.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Atlético Madrid trailed Barcelona by 10 points at the start of November but will end the year three points clear at the top of LaLiga with a game left after Alexander Sørloth's remarkable 96th-minute play concluded in the Olympic Stadium between the two best in the league.

Rodrigo De Paul's strike canceled out Pedri's opener in Barcelona on Saturday, but it was the home side who pushed for victory late on. The scoreboard, which showed six minutes of injury time, was greeted with cheers from local fans as Barça, led by the brilliant Pedri, threw everything forward in search of a winner. But those six minutes ended in despair, and the only roar now came from the few hundred away fans at the top of the second division as Atlético rattled off 12 straight wins in all competitions, firmly cementing their title claim.

Barça is currently in free fall. They can't even string together two wins in a row, let alone twelve. After taking 33 out of 36 possible points at the start of the season, Hansi Flick's team dwindled and only took six of the last 21.

“Jan was extremely important.”

Atlético's chances were few and far between. They had zero shots in the first half. De Paul's goal was their first goal. Pablo Barrios had a good chance but was denied by a fine save from Iñaki Peña, but as stoppage time stretched to six minutes, it was Barça who believed they could score the winner.

“We played a brilliant game,” said Flick.

“It was really unbelievable how we played. That's how I want to see my team. Our style, how we want to play, that was really great. I am proud.”

Atlético have now won seven straight in LaLiga and will finish 2024 as Spain's best team, regardless of how Real Madrid perform against Sevilla on Sunday. Their numbers are as impressive as Barça's are depressing.

Simeone has already led them to the title twice, beating Barça and Real Madrid. Could this happen again?

“I won't take that route, not at all,” he said in typically shy fashion when asked about his team's chances of winning the league.

He will be disappointed that it is now winter break. For Barça, however, it comes at a good time. It gives Lamine Yamal time to recover from an ankle injury – they have yet to win a game when he is not in the starting line-up – and others time to rest, like Pedri, who put in an excellent performance against Atlético.

“The way he played was fantastic, the goal was incredibly good. When you see him on the pitch now, he also trains the other players around him. That's good. It's the next step for him. He's 22 years old and he's on the right track.”

Pedri deserved more but instead he finished the game sluggishly on the pitch as Atlético celebrated in front of their fans what could turn out to be a huge three points in a fascinating three-way battle for the title.

“We knew how to defend against a team that played good football,” Simeone said.

“The changes gave us strength in the final phase and the counterattack that led us to victory was exquisite. It gave us the chance to win a game that Barça probably deserved a little more from.”

NASA is growing options to the most important downside in cleansing the moon: mud!

As part of the Artemis program, NASA will send the first astronauts since the Apollo era to the moon before 2030. They will be joined by several space agencies such as ESA and China, which plan to send astronauts (and “taikonauts”) there for the first time. In addition, all plan to build permanent habitats in the South Pole-Aitken Basin and the necessary infrastructure that will lead to a permanent human presence. This presents many challenges, the most notable of which are those arising from the nature of the lunar environment.

Aside from the extreme temperatures, a 14-day diurnal cycle, and air-poor environment, there is the problem of lunar regolith (also known as lunar dust). Not only is lunar regolith rough and jagged, but it also sticks to everything because it is electrostatically charged. Because this dust affects astronauts' health, equipment and machinery, NASA is developing technologies to reduce dust formation. Seven of these experiments will be tested during a flight test on a Blue Origin New Shepard rocket to assess their ability to reduce lunar dust.

Another major problem with lunar regolith is how it is stirred up and dispersed by spacecraft clouds. Because there is essentially no atmosphere and lower gravity (16.5% of Earth's), this dust can remain in the air for extended periods of time. The result of billions of years of meteor and micrometeoroid impacts and a complete lack of exposure to the elements, its jagged nature acts aggressively on every surface it comes into contact with, from spacesuits and equipment to human skin, eyes and lungs. It will also rely on solar panels, preventing missions from using enough energy to survive a lunar night.

In addition, it can also cause devices to overheat as it covers heat emitters and accumulates on windows, camera lenses and visors, making it more difficult to see, navigate and capture accurate images. Kristen John, technical integration lead for the Lunar Surface Innovation Initiative at NASA's Johnson Space Center, said in a NASA press release: “The fine-grained nature of dust contains particles smaller than the human eye can see, creating a contaminated surface “can make it look clean.”

Address the problem

These technologies were developed by NASA's Game Changing Development program within the agency's Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD). The Lunar Gravity Simulation via Suborbital Rocket flight test will investigate regolith mechanics and lunar dust transport in a simulated lunar gravity environment. The payload includes dust mitigation and cleanup projects with multiple strategies. This includes:

ClothBot:
This compact robot is designed to simulate and measure how dust behaves in a pressurized environment that astronauts might bring with them after performing Extravehicular Activities (EVAs). The robot relies on pre-programmed movements that simulate the movements of astronauts as they remove their spacesuits (also called “undressing”), releasing a small dose of lunar regolith simulant. A laser-illuminated imaging system then captures the dust flow in real time, while sensors record the size and number of particles.

Electrostatic dust dispersion (EDL):
The EDL will study how lunar dust is “swirled” (swirled) when it is electrostatically charged to improve dust-suspension models. During the lunar gravity phase of the flight, a sample of dust is released, which the EDL illuminates with a UV light source, charging the particles. The dust then passes through a foil laser as it rises from the surface while the EDL observes and records the results. The EDL's camera will continue to record the dust until the end of the mission, even after the moon's gravity phase ends and the UV light is turned off.

Hermes Lunar G:
The Hermes Lunar-G project, developed by NASA, Texas A&M and Texas Space Technology Applications and Research (T-STAR), is based on a facility (Hermes) that previously operated on the International Space Station (ISS). Like its predecessor, the Lunar-G project will rely on repurposed Hermes hardware to study lunar regolith simulants. This is done using four canisters containing compressed lunar dust simulants. As the flight enters the moon's gravity phase, these simulants decompress and float around in the canisters while high-speed cameras and sensors collect data. The results will be compared with microgravity data from the ISS and similar flight experiments.

The data obtained through these projects will provide information about regolith production rates, transport and mechanics that will help scientists refine computational models. This will allow mission planners and designers to develop better dust mitigation strategies for future missions to the Moon and Mars. This challenge is already influencing several aspects of NASA's technological developments, ranging from in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) and construction to transportation and surface energy. John said:

“Learning some fundamental properties of lunar dust behavior and the effects of lunar dust on systems has implications far beyond dust mitigation and the environment. Advancing our understanding of lunar dust behavior and advancing our dust mitigation technologies will benefit most of the capabilities planned for use on the lunar surface.”

The test flights and vehicle improvements that enable simulation of lunar gravity are funded by NASA's Flight Opportunities program.

four Key Traits This Silicon Valley VC Appears for in Founders

Millions of companies are founded around the world every year. For these big ideas to become successful startups, most of them inevitably face the challenges of fundraising.

While there is no magic formula, there are variables that founders can focus on when working with potential investors. TNW met with San Francisco-based VC Plug and Play early-stage investor Letizia Royo-Villanova during the year Red Bull Basement global finals in Tokyo to gain their insights.

The only thing that really needs to stand out, according to Royo-Villanova, is the founder's drive and authenticity. “Maybe they have experienced a problem or know someone who has had that problem and are desperate to solve it. Not because they make money – that’s a plus, of course – but because they actually care about solving this problem.”

In addition to this passion, the ability to sell is another key competency. Founders are constantly challenged to sell their ideas to investors, customers – and also to talent. “The best founders will have the best talent on their team,” says Royo-Villanova.

While direct industry experience is valuable, it is not always essential. “There are great entrepreneurs who don’t necessarily have that experience. The urge to start a business is something they are born with.”

However, insight into the customer and an understanding of the market are non-negotiable: “You have to really understand the pain point and the industry.” This will open many doors in the future,” adds the VC.

Ultimately it depends on personality and the relationship. “I think you can feel it in the first half hour,” says Royo-Villanova, referring to understanding whether a founder is someone the VC wants to spend time with. “If you end up investing in a founder, you’re going to have a lot of meetings with that person. So if you don’t feel the vibe, you don’t want to invest in it.”

Mistakes founders make when pitching

Even if a founder has the best idea imaginable, it's important to create an effective pitch to get investors on board. (Not everyone is lucky enough to survive a disastrous pitch like the one from Nvidia co-founder Jensen Huang In 1993 he gave Don Valentine of Sequoia.)

One of the most common mistakes Royo-Villanova sees is that founders spend too much time describing the general problem instead of focusing on their specific solution. “If it’s a climate or sustainability startup,” the VC explains, “and they spend 15 minutes talking about how there’s a climate problem, I don’t have to listen to it.” You could break it down to me in an or say two sentences. Then we can concentrate on more important things.”

And while individual entrepreneurs can certainly be successful, the VC is more likely to consider financing a founding team of two or more people. “Building a startup is hard enough, and if you do it alone, what if you suddenly have a bad week or month? Common pitfalls when running an early-stage startup

Of course, in addition to the pitch, there is also the small matter of actually running the company. Particularly when it comes to fundraising, Royo-Villanova believes that taking money away from every available investor without considering strategic direction is a major misstep.

“The money will run out, but the support of the people who invest in you shouldn’t run out,” she says. The right VC can provide help with recruiting, sales, or networking with the industry.

Going back to the question of talent, hiring decisions are a crucial area for running the company. Founders often try to save money by hiring cheaper talent, but Royo-Villanova says this can backfire later. “It’s about finding the right solution for your company and building a culture from day one,” she says.

Finally, the inability to rotate is another potentially fatal flaw. “If you have an idea, talk to potential customers from day one and understand if this is actually a problem and that they will prioritize and pay for it. If not, it's okay to pivot. If you’re going to fail, fail fast – and it’s not even a failure, it just changes into something else.”

A focus on education and supportive regulation could drive European innovation

Given all the concerns and recent discourse about the innovation gap between the US and Europe, we couldn't help but ask the California-based VC what she believes are the key areas holding Europe back.

She sees the lack of early contact with innovation and entrepreneurship as one of the main problems. “I don’t think I was as aware of the world of innovation or venture capital as probably some students in the US,” says Royo-Villanova (who is from Spain). “If you start instilling this culture of innovation at a young age and explaining how important it is, it will be very helpful in the future.”

Regulation and company attitudes also play a role. European companies can often display a risk-averse mindset, in contrast to the more dynamic and entrepreneurial culture of their North American counterparts. Additionally, complex regulatory frameworks can prevent startups from scaling quickly – something that affects initiatives such as the recently launched initiative EU Inc hope to overcome.

Founders who want to build successful startups must embody passion, salesmanship and customer insight, while avoiding common pitfalls including neglecting strategic fundraising and failing to pivot quickly. Meanwhile, the European innovation ecosystem would benefit from early education, a change in business attitudes and a streamlining of regulations.

Tackling all these challenges together could open up enormous opportunities for European startups to create a virtuous circle of innovation and investment produce more winners on the global stage.

Ram delays electrical pickup till 2026 as Ramcharger plug-in hybrid takes middle stage

This appears to be another sign that hybrids are leading the charge while sales of electric vehicles (EVs) are declining.

The giant car company Stellantis is postponing the planned market launches of two highly anticipated Ram models. The brand's first electric pickup has been pushed back to 2026, while the Ramcharger plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will take center stage next year.

“The decision to launch Ramcharger first was driven by overwhelming consumer interest, maintaining a competitive advantage in technology, and slowing industry demand for half-ton (battery EV) pickup trucks,” Stellantis said in a statement.

The new Ramcharger also enables bi-directional vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home charging, giving it the flexibility to charge another electric vehicle with a Stellantis battery or feed power back to the grid.
