Turkish membership Fenerbahce declares José Mourinho as coach

Former Real Madrid coach José Mourinho will be unveiled as the new coach of Turkish Süper Lig team Fenerbahce later on Sunday, the club said.

After days of strong hints that Mourinho would take over, the Istanbul club announced in a post on X early Sunday that the Portuguese manager would attend a ceremony at the Sükrü Saracoglu Stadium.

“Saracoglu is expecting his new coach Jose Mourinho and his great fans at 7 p.m.!” the post says.

On Saturday evening, Fenerbahce released a video message from 61-year-old Mourinho, telling Fenerbahce fans that he would “see them tomorrow in Kadikoy and let's start our journey together.”

It is Mourinho's first job since leaving Roma in January after two and a half years marked by winning the 2022 Europa Conference League and a series of refereeing disputes.

The Portuguese has not worked outside Europe's top five leagues since 2004, when he left Porto after winning the Champions League and joined Chelsea, who were on the rise under then-owner Roman Abramovich.

Since then, in a career full of trophies and controversy off the field, he has also coached Inter Milan, Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham.

Fenerbahce finished second in the Turkish league this season behind arch-rivals Galatasaray and clashed with the Turkish football federation, including withdrawing its team from the Turkish Super Cup in protest.
