Shohei Ohtani's quest for 50 house runs and 50 stolen bases

Shohei Ohtani could be on his way to another record.

Editor's recommendations

In his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers after signing the largest contract in MLB history, Ohtani earned membership in the 40/40 Club on August 23 against the Tampa Bay Rays when he stole a base and hit a walk-off grand slam in the fourth inning.

40/40 Club

player team
Ronald Acuna Jr. (41 HRs, 73 SBs) 2023 Atlanta Braves
Alfonso Soriano (46 home runs, 41 SBs) Washington Nationals 2006
Alex Rodriguez (42 HRs, 46 SBs) 1998 Seattle Mariners
Barry Bonds (42 home runs, 40 SBs) 1996 San Francisco Giants
Jose Canseco (42 home runs, 40 SBs) 1988 Oakland Athletics

Ohtani became the sixth MLB player to join the 40/40 club and the first since Ronald Acuna Jr. in 2023, when the Atlanta Braves star hit his 40th home run and stole 73 bases in the final week of the regular season.

Ohtani was already the first player in MLB history to record 48 home runs and 48 stolen bases in a single season, and now he has increased his career high in home runs to 48.

With the MLB regular season ending on September 29, we're following Ohtani's quest to become the first player with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases.

Stolen Base No. 49

Ohtani continues to inch closer to history. He is now just one stolen base away from 50 this season after stealing one in the first inning against the Marlins.

Home run no. 48

Less than a week after his last home run, Ohtani hit his 48th against the Miami Marlins. With his 48th home run, Ohtani is tied with Adrián Beltré for the second-most in a season in franchise history and is just two away from breaking the Dodgers' single-season record.

Home run #47, stolen base #48

In Ohtani's first season with the Dodgers, it didn't take long for him to enter the franchise's record books.

With his 47th home run of the season, Ohtani is tied with Cody Bellinger (2019) for the third-most home runs in a season in Dodgers history.

Ohtani's home run was the first of four home runs for the Dodgers in the opening inning, making it the first time in franchise history that they have accomplished this feat. This is the 13th time in MLB history that a team has hit four home runs in the first inning. The last time the Cardinals did this was against the Phillies in 2022.

In the following inning, Ohtani came even closer to the historic moment by stealing a base. This season, he has a home run and a stolen base in 12 games, which is the second-most in a single season in MLB history. Only Rickey Henderson managed more in 1986, when he stole 13 games.

Ohtani is slowly approaching the 50-home run mark, and his 46th was a smash. The home run reached a distance of 450 feet and was Ohtani's ninth home run this season to go that far, and the 22nd of his career over 450 feet. Ohtani's 46th home run is also the highest of his career.

Knock, knock.
