Husband admits killing wife's unborn rainbow baby

An Indianapolis Metro PD affidavit describes a Jan. 19 phone call about a shooting. A witness had driven to Kayla's house to do laundry but instead discovered Jeremy McBride standing next to Netherlands' bleeding body on the bathroom floor. At the time, the woman said the estranged husband appeared to be on the phone saying someone had been shot. He reportedly left the scene before police arrived. However, the woman's 911 call said he called to tell her he would turn himself in.

The police tracked him down before he could reach the station, stopped him and arrested him. He reportedly told officers during the arrest that the gun was in his car, which was verified. Following a search warrant, investigators also found an extended magazine clip and two loaded handgun magazines.

During his interview with police, Jeremy McBride admitted to plotting the death of his estranged wife and the death of their unborn rainbow baby. McBride planned to kill himself too. He also shared that he practiced his aim several times before the attack. The bullets that struck Kayla eventually entered her abdomen and killed the 20-week-old fetus, which McBride admitted was jealous because he was not the father.

“McBride admitted to thinking about his plans for several days and stated that he shot his wife multiple times while she was being turned away from him at the apartment,” the probable cause affidavit states.

Prosecutors said McBride revealed he was upset about Kayla's pregnancy after they struggled with infertility. He claimed that she had been unfaithful and had become pregnant by someone else, even though the divorce had not yet been finalized. Jeremy also had several written notes in which he described his paternity anger and jealousy.

“Maybe one day she’ll come back, but not for me. But in many ways I killed her.” Jeremy McBride reportedly said.

The woman's family shares her health status

Kayla's family told WRTV that while she did not have surgery following the shooting, she did undergo several surgeries. It is currently unclear whether the 25-year-old can become pregnant again. She didn't talk about losing her rainbow baby that way.

“She was five months pregnant with her miracle baby after multiple failed pregnancies in the past, and she lost her baby due to this egregious crime against her. She is alive and thankfully not paralyzed, but she has already undergone several surgeries, including the removal of her left ovary, her left fallopian tube, part of her small intestine and part of her large intestine, and has had some repairs done to her uterus “said the family.

As previously mentioned, the 36-year-old is behind bars in the Marion County Jail on charges of attempted murder with attempted intentional homicide of another person and feticide. His first hearing in the case took place on Friday, January 24th.
