Rivian Fans are happy! A few weeks ago, Rivian was automated, driving for his second generation R1 vehicles with a groundbreaking software update. The new feature, which is only in operation on mapped motorways, had many fans for more demands.
Now the company that is proud is waiting to listen and deliver what its customers want, not long to signal a “card-free” upgrade later this year.
“A feedback that we have heard loudly and clearly is that customers love [Highway Assist] But they want to use it in more places, ”said James Philbin, VP of Autonomy, Riviantrackr meeting point in Riviantrackr.
The delay between the publication of Highway Assist (HWA) and the Kart -free automated trip gives time for the Rivian vehicles fleet to collect “unique events”. These events are used to train Rivian's offline model in the cloud before the data is attributed to individual vehicles.
When Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe explained in early March, the HWA marked the beginning of an expanding automated chassis, “from motorways to surface streets to turn-by-turn”.
At the moment, HWA is still asking for the drivers to keep an eye on the street. The system sends warnings when they drift too long without becoming attentive. But stay on-off driving are set for 2026.
It is also part of what Rivian refers to his philosophy “gives her time back”. The first of three pillars that support Rivian's vision in the next three to five years. Philbin says that philosophy is geared towards “meeting drivers where they are” instead of pursuing full automation as other car manufacturers like Teslas Robotaxi may do.
“We realize that many people buy rivians to make these adventures to take these amazing trips. They want to drive and we want to let them go,” says Philbin. “But there are a lot of other driving who are very monotonous, very boring, like on the highway. There is the time for you how we can have the best experience.”
This will finally lead to the third pillar of Rivian's vision that provides level 4 or high-automation vehicles: these offer functions such as Auto Park or Auto Valet, where you can get out of your rivian in the office or at the airport.
Philbin is not promising, but he believes that the current hardware and platforms should be able to support these upcoming functions.
The second pillar for Rivian is the focus on active security features because the EV maker has rewritten its entire autonomous vehicle system (AV) for its gene2 models. This focus made it possible for Rivians R1T to be the only large truck in North America that received a top security selection+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
“I think there is a lot of innovation in the active security room to make these functions more capable and prevent more accidents,” says Philbin. “Really the goal of having the goal from North Star, Rivian would be one of the safest vehicles on the street, not only for the occupants, but also for other street consumers.”
