Beijing reported that a 9-year-old boy tested positive for COVID-19 last week, and his school ran a range of tests, including serum antibody tests, nose, throat and even anal swabs for all staff and students, which amazed many prompted when anal swabs could be more accurate in detecting the virus than other measures.

Li Tongzeng, deputy director of infectious diseases at Beijing You’an Hospital, said studies have shown that coronavirus survives longer in the anus or excrement than that taken from the upper torso, and in some silent carriers the virus could be 3 to 5 Days present in the throats so some tests can give false negative results.

Taking an anal swab could increase accuracy in key groups, Li noted during an interview with Central Chinese Television. However, since the method is not as practical as throat swabs, it is only used on key groups in quarantine centers.

In Australia, wastewater tests are conducted regularly to identify transmission hotspots in the community. Therefore, it seems plausible that the Chinese researchers are right that anal swabs are more likely to detect Covid-19 infection.

I guess the question is, how much do you want to know if you actually have Covid?
