Hawks’ Trae Younger is out as umpire after a late no-call in opposition to Mavericks: “I am not going to fall simply to fall.”

Trae Young’s foul-drawing techniques this season have driven opposing coaches and players crazy, but this time it was the All-Star Guardian who left the ground furious.

With 4.7 seconds left in Wednesday night’s game between the Hawks and Mavericks and Atlanta one point behind, Young was looking for an opportunity to hit a summer beater. But in the final game, center Dallas Willie Cauley-Stein knocked Young down when he set up a screen for teammate John Collins. Young landed on the floor and watched as Danilo Gallinari missed a tough fadeaway jumper after time ran out that secured a Mavs win.

Young then berated umpire Josh Tiven, who saw Cauley-Stein hit Young but decided to swallow the whistle.

Tiven told a pool reporter that the contact was classified as “accidental” and after reviewing the aftermath, the crew believed that not calling was the “right decision”. Young clearly disagreed with this assessment.

“The game for me was to get the ball and I’m not going to run four seconds from the ball and we’re trying to win the game,” said Young, who ended up with 25 points, 15 assists and seven rebounds in a loss. “I mean, I’m not going to fall just to end up falling. That’s just the most frustrating part, not really being able to play a piece at the end is what is really frustrating.”

Cauley-Stein, who scored 14 points and took six rebounds off the bench, gave Young the honor of attempting a “sneaky” move but believed Tiven was handling the situation right.

“I don’t even see Trae,” said Cauley-Stein. “He’s a smart boy. He tried to get a quick little foul to take free throws to freeze the game. There was no way they would give him that call for the game. Good try, but. That was smooth. It was sneaky. “
