According to EU official Virginijus Sinkevičius, corals that survived the Cretaceous / Paleogenic Extinction event, the dinosaur killer, will soon disappear because we increased atmospheric CO2 by a few ppm.

EU Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius urges Australia to sign the Pledge of Heads of State and Government for Nature, promoting an environmentally friendly recovery from the Covid crisis

A senior representative of the European Union has sounded the alarm about the rapid decline of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef while supporting calls for more ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reductions by all countries.

Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius told Guardian Australia that he was deeply concerned about the threats facing the Great Barrier Reef. “As long as we don’t change our behavior, things won’t improve,” he said.

Sinkevičius hopes Australia will sign the 84-Country Pledge of Heads of State and Government for Nature – a document calling for a “green and just” recovery from the Covid-19 crisis and stronger political will against the ” Crises of loss of biodiversity and the ecosystem “tackle degradation and climate change”.

The promise made by the heads of state and government supports the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This is a goal that Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has cited as his preference, but he has refused to make a formal commitment amid divisions within his government over climate policy.

If this is an April Fool’s joke, it’s a good one. In the worst case, global warming would push Australian coral reefs a little further south from the equator. The idea that a tropical heat-loving organism would somehow die off because we made the ocean a little warmer is absurd.
