A fans had to wait a year to surprise Astros players for signing signs in 2017 and 2018. They took the opportunity on the opening day in 2021.
The Oakland believers were discharged on Thursday at the Coliseum on Houston second baseman Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa.
The gathering also sang “impostors” during the national anthem and brought up signs naming the Astros alike. They enjoyed A’s starter Chris Bassitt, who hit Correa on the left shoulder with a fastball of 94 mph in the fourth inning.
“Finally I have to hear a few boos,” Astros, who started Zack Greinke, told reporters after the game, according to the Houston Chronicle. “It wasn’t fun to hear, I didn’t think so, but we played well so it didn’t matter. Hopefully we keep playing well and it won’t be that big of a problem.”
The Astros won 8-1 and Bregman scored a long home run in the eighth inning.
Altuve, Bregman, Correa and Yuli Gurriel are the only positional players on the 2017 Astros team, which won the World Series against the Dodgers in seven games. In late 2019, former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers (who is now with the A’s) whistled for Houston’s activities during that championship season. The team filmed the captors’ signs with a camera in the center field connected to a monitor mounted behind the dugout canoe in Houston. As soon as the Astros knew which pitch was coming, someone hit a trash can to tip Schlern.
FAGAN: Red Sox’s hiring Cora proves baseball doesn’t care about scandals
The fans of A recreated the trash can trick on Thursday:
MLB began the investigation after Fiers went public. No players were banned because Commissioner Rob Manfred granted them immunity in exchange for their full cooperation. Then-Astros manager AJ Hinch and Red Sox manager Alex Cora – Hinch’s bank coach in 2017 – were banned from the 2020 season because of their role in the scandal. They were also fired from their respective clubs. The Astros also fired then General Manager Jeff Luhnow. Carlos Beltran, who played on the Astros of 17 and was fingered as the ringleader of the operation, was fired as Mets manager.
In the last off-season, the Red Sox hired Cora again and the Tigers hired Hinch as their new manager.
Altuve has refused to participate in sign theft. A defiant Correa backed Altuve’s claims during spring 2020 training. Altuve also denied wearing a buzzer under his uniform against the Yankees in the 2019 ALCS. That controversy erupted after Correa hit a walk-off home run against Aroldis Chapman in Game 6 to send Houston to the World Series, and the little star meant he didn’t want his jersey ripped off at the celebration. Houston would lose in seven to the Nationals.
