The first of the men’s Final Four games is underway: No. 1 Baylor versus No. 2 Houston.
The Lone Star State teams matchup should be exciting as they both try to reach the national title game. The Cougars certainly have more history on this stage as Kelvin Sampson’s team attempt to restore the glory of the Phi Slama Jama years.
Of course, Baylor – who hadn’t played the Final Four since 1950 and the championship game since 1948 – would love nothing more than helping 18-year-old coach Scott Drew to his first national title spot in the US that same season he made his first Final Four appearance.
Both teams can score in streaks, but it remains to be seen which will appear on the biggest stage. To do this, reach out to Houston’s Quentin Grimes and Baylors Jared Butler to set the tone and pace for their respective teams.

Second half
6:54 pm: Not a ton going on, but bears still have a considerable lead – 60-41 – on the third media timeout (7:47).
6:40 pm: Baylor’s Mark Vital (two points, one rebound, one steal) has his fourth foul on the second media timeout (11:59).
6:40 pm: Speak of the devil.
6:39 pm: Houston shoots much better this half and misses Baylor’s lead. It’s snowing 52-36 bears. Well, if Houston can make a few stops. …
6:37 pm: It is 52-32 Baylor at the first TV timeout of the second half.
6:33 pm: A Sasser layup does it 50-30 Baylor. Like trying to save a sinking boat with a thimble.
6:30 in the evening: Houston is credited with a turnover giving B aylor the ball, but it appears the Bears defender was the last to touch him out of bounds.
6:28 pm: And there is Grimes with his first bucket in six tries, followed by a Jarreau bucket. Pumas are 3 out of 4 out of the field in the second half. The bears are still leading 49-26.
6:26 pm: Reggie Chaney only gets the second non-Sasser bucket for the cougars in their first half-possession. It is 45-22 Baylor.
First half: Baylor 45, Houston 20
6:07 pm: Statistics for the first half:
- Field goals: Baylor 16 of 28 (57.1 percent); Houston 7 out of 26 (26.9 percent)
- 3 points: Baylor 8 of 15 (35.7 percent); Houston 5 of 14 (53.3 percent)
- Free throws: Baylor 5 out of 7 (71.4 percent); Houston 1 in 2 (50 percent)
- Rebounds: Baylor 20; Houston 11th
- Helps: Baylor 12; Houston 5
- Steals: Baylor 6; Houston 0
- Blocks: Baylor 0; Houston 3
- Turnover: Baylor 6; Houston 9
Baylors Butler and Houstons Sasser score 17 points. Butler is 6 out of 8 from the field and 4 out of 5 from the outside of the bow, adding four rebounds, two assists, and a steal to his totals. Sasser is 6 out of 11 from the field and 5 out of 8 from 3 point land; He also has two rebounds.
The difference between the two results: Sasser’s teammates have a combined three points and a field goal, while Butler has had help from Mitchell (nine points) and the bench (17 combined points).
6:05 pm: Mitchell hits 3 again just before half to make it 45-20 Baylor. It’s called March Madness for a reason, but the second half here looks a lot like a mere formality.
6:03 pm: Mitchell is called in for a long 2 to make it 42-18. This is followed by a Houston bucket – from Sasser, of course – to make it through 42-20.
6:01 pm: Houston’s shot fails – shock – and Mayer gets a tough layup on the other end to make it through 40-18.
6 pm: Gorham hit the first 1-1, but Baylor last touched it outside the limits. The cougars have a chance of a much-needed bucket at 20.
5:58 pm: Gorham is called on a trip before attempting to lie under the edge. He’s not happy about that.
5:53 p.m .: A butler layup is the final result before the final media timeout of half. It is 38-17 bears to play with 3:53.
5:52 pm: Adam Flagers 3 does it 36-17 Baylor. It’s getting a little late for Houston.
5:51 pm: Here’s how amazing Sasser was, and how irrelevant every other cougar was: he shoots 5 out of 9 with 15 points. All others are 1 of 11 with two points. Not a winning combination.
5:50 pm: … and this is followed by Butler’s 3s in quick succession. Sasser keeps Houston in, but Butler keeps the Cougars at bay. That does it 33-17 Baylorand Sampson is forced to take his second time off to stop the bleeding.
5:50 pm: Sasser has his fifth 3 of the game. He’s amazing tonight. That does it 27-17 Baylor.
5:48 pm: Houston has a slight defensive rebound, but can’t bring it in. So Mayer hits it for a slight putback 27-14 Baylor.
5:42 pm: Trash in the last four? Butler gets a one-one layup, Justin Gorham gets a blocking foul. It is 25-14 Baylor. That’s the score on the third media timeout of the half (7:48).
5:40 pm: Another 3 from Sasser. He’s 4 for 7 in field goalscoring and 4 out of 6 out of 4. He single-handedly keeps the Cougars in this game and cuts himself short Baylor’s lead on 22-14.
5:36 pm: A butler 3 (he’s 2 for 2) can do it 22-11 Baylor. Kelvin Sampson calls his first time out at 10:40 in the half; This is Houston’s biggest deficit of the tournament.
5:32 pm: Baylor leads 17-11 in second media timeout (11:52) 17-11. Baylor is 5 to 9 on field goals while Houston is 4 to 10. Three of the four shots taken by the cougars were by Sasser.
17:30: Actually there is still a Sasser 3. He is 3 out of 4 on field goals with nine points. This graciously ends the 10-0 run of the bears and the drought of the cougars. It is 16-11 Baylor.
5:28 pm: It’s now a 10-0 run by Baylor after Tchamwa Tchatchoua made two free throws. Houston now has more sales (four) than field targets (three).
5:28 pm: Houston has a drought of more than three minutes. I will definitely want this to be corrected against a high profile Baylor crime.
5:26 pm: Baylor leads 13-8 in our first media timeout with 14:15 in the game. Houston is 2 for 6 from 3 point land while Baylor is 3 for 3.
5:23 pm: And now a Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua jumper makes it out of the free throw line 13-8 Baylor, the latest in a 7-0 run for the bears.
5:22 pm: Now Baylor’s Matthew Mayer joins the action with a 3. That does it 11-8 Baylor.
5:20 pm: Another 3, these from Houstos Sasser. That gives the cougars one 8-6 lead (DeJon Jarreau Jumper).
5:18 pm: And there are 3 more from Baylors Davion Mitchell to give B.Aylor took his first lead at 6-3. Three buckets in this one and they’re all three.
5:18 pm: And there is Jared Butler with his own 3 for Baylor Knot the game at 3-3.
5:17 pm: Marcus Sasser gets the game’s first bucket from 3-point land to make it through 3-0 Houston. Baylor’s subsequent possession ends in a journey.
5:16 pm: And Baylor’s inaugural possession ends with a shot clock injury. Jared Butler’s layup fails to hit the edge and the bears fail to shoot a ricochet in time. Also, watch DeJon Jarreau jump over a grown man:
5:15 pm: Baylor wins the tip. Here we go.
5:14 pm: The teams have made their entrances. Now all you have to do is play basketball.
