NASCAR racing climate updates: Rain threatens to delay Martinsville evening race

The first night race of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season could last into Saturday or be postponed to Sunday due to the rainy conditions at Martinsville Speedway.

The forecast of the National Weather Service for Martinsville put the probability of rain on Saturday at 80 percent. That would make the planned green flag at 8 p.m. ET for the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 highly unlikely.

Rain already affected the first race of the weekend in Martinsville, the Xfinity Series event on Friday evening. NASCAR paused the race after 89 of 250 laps and will finish it at 12:00 PM ET on Sunday.

Below is information about the weather forecast and conditions NASCAR is monitoring to finish Saturday’s race.

NASCAR racing weather updates

Start with NASCAR’s battle against the elements on Friday night. Showers over the track stopped the Xfinity race around 9:30 p.m. ET. This was the radar about an hour later.

The race was interrupted after about three hours of delay and several attempts to dry the track.

Things don’t look much better for the race on Saturday evening:

According to Weather.com there is a 100 percent chance of rain in the evening: “Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm that evening, then some persistent showers overnight. … Winds SSW at 5 to 10 miles per hour. Rain probability 100 percent. “
