Why did patriots lower Julian Edelman? Solely a part of the New England roster change has failed bodily

The Patriots sent shock waves through the NFL on Monday – trembling, at least – announcing that they would cut off veteran receiver Julian Edelman.

Multiple reports suggest that New England cut 34-year-old Edelman for failing to keep his physical condition up. He would have played his 12th season in the league in 2021 after missing the last 10 games of the 2020 season while recovering from knee surgery.

New England’s decision to cut Edelman, however, was more than just a simple, failed physical decision. Either way, Monday’s decision could cap an eleven-year career in which Edelman scored 620 passes for 6,822 yards, 36 touchdowns, and won three Super Bowls.

Why did the patriots cut Julian Edelman?

The original reason for Edelman’s tenure in New England was due to a failed physical condition. At first glance, this makes sense when you consider that the 34-year-old receiver has played in the fewest games of a given season since joining the NFL in 2009.It’s obvious that Edelman would have seen fewer goals in 2021, after the Patriots added recipients Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne, and Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith.

However, this was only part of the decision of the Patriots. According to ESPN’s Mike Weiss, the decision could simply be a formality and a precursor to Edelman’s retirement from football.

While Julian Edelman surfaced on today’s transaction wire that his contract had been terminated by the Patriots, Edelman was considering retirement, and this could just be a precursor to that announcement.

Edelman later confirmed rumors that he was actually retiring. Edelman announced his decision in a recorded video.

Why is Edelman withdrawing from the NFL?

In the video, Edelman cited an unknown knee injury from the 2020 season as the reason for his resignation. He had surgery on October 29 and did not return for the remainder of the 7-9 season in New England.

“Nothing in my career has ever been easy. And no surprise, it won’t be easy either,” said Edelman in his announcement. “I always said, ‘I’ll go until the wheels come off.’ And they finally fell off. Due to an injury last year, I will officially announce my retirement from football. It was a tough decision, but the right one for me and my family. And I am honored and so proud to be a patriot in the Send retirement.

That last line also puts an end to any rumors that Edelman will attempt a comeback anywhere else in the NFL – particularly in Tampa Bay with former teammates Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski.
