Chloe Zhao just wrote the history of the Academy Awards.
The Nomadland filmmaker has just won the Best Director award at the 2021 Oscars. This makes her the second female director to ever take home the trophy in this category. Kathryn Bigelow was previously the only woman to win Best Director for The Hurt Locker in 2008.
Zhao was nominated against another round Thomas Vinterberg, Manks David Fincher, Minari Lee Isaac Chungand promising young woman Emerald Fennell. 2021 marks the first year in Oscars history that more than one filmmaker has been nominated for Best Director.
During her speech, Zhao shared a kind message that will warm your heart.
“Thanks to the academy. Thanks to my brilliant, brilliant nominees, co-nominees,” said Zhao from the stage. “My entire Nomadland company. What a crazy once-in-a-lifetime trip we’ve taken. Thank you very much. I’m so grateful to you.”
