Argentina is considering withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement with Trump –
President Javier Milei met with Trump overnight as both countries consider exiting the landmark 2015 agreement.
BAKU, Azerbaijan – Argentina is considering withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and is rethinking the global climate agreement with US President-elect Donald Trump.
“We are rethinking our strategy on all climate change issues,” the country’s foreign minister, Gerardo Werthein, told The New York Times, adding that the country has fundamental doubts about what is driving climate change. The Washington Post also reported the news, citing an unnamed government official.
Argentina withdrew its delegation from the COP29 climate talks in Baku, Azerbaijan this week, just days after the start of the two-week summit. Werthein told the Times that no final decision had been made on the 2015 Paris Agreement, but noted that Argentina was reconsidering participation in an agreement that “includes many elements.”
“We have decided to withdraw our delegation and reassess our position, nothing more,” Werthein said. “I think it’s a sovereign right.”
The Argentine embassy in Baku did not respond to a request for comment.
Argentine President Javier Milei has called climate change and international efforts to curb it a “socialist lie.”
On Thursday, he met Trump at the new president's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. Milei was the first head of state that Trump received in person since his election victory on November 5th.
During his campaign, Trump said he would withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement. The US briefly left the country during Trump's first term. But no other countries followed suit.
