Here is coverage from the BBC
The Indonesian mountain Semeru erupted, pouring ash and smoke an estimated 5.6 km into the sky over Java, the country’s most densely populated island.
No evacuation orders have been issued and no casualties have been reported.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (NDMA) warned villagers living on the slopes of the mountain to be alert to continued volcanic activity.
The footage showed ashes from the 3,676 m high volcano that towers over the houses.
“The villages of Sumber Mujur and Curah Koboan [in Lumajang municipality] are on the trajectory of the hot clouds, ”said local official Thoriqul Haq on Saturday.
The residents of the Curah Kobokan river basin were asked to watch out for a possible mud flow with “cold lava”, which could be triggered by intense rainfall in combination with volcanic material.
The Semeru mountain erupted around 5:24 p.m. local time (10:24 GMT), authorities said.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide and cause frequent volcanic activity and earthquakes.

Following a general pattern, this Semeru eruption in Indonesia is part of the larger pattern of volcanoes in Indonesia (on Java, Sumatra, and further east of Vanuatu) in an awakening.
