Everyone knows closers are the worst, so one might wonder why most fantasy baseball leagues still have parades as a category. Even if your league switched to save and hold as a category – which really opens up the player pool to include all the relief pitchers, and causes much less stress on turn day or in season – those third graders inning, four run implosions really stand out. Even so, most leagues still have saves, so most owners will need a good set of RP leaderboards that will flow into draft day.
With each season it becomes more difficult to classify reliefs. Around two thirds of the closers lose their jobs at some point, at least temporarily. This may be due to injuries or poor performance, but either way there will be significant revenue. Additionally, in the late innings, more and more teams seem to be settling on a strategy closer to the committee. This ultimately leads to more potential savings, but it also makes it harder to find the right ones. There are only so many posts on a roster, and you cannot devote too many RPs that may get one chance to save each week.
DOMINATE YOUR DESIGN: 2021 Fantasy Baseball Cheat Sheet
Our RP leaderboard increases the “safe” closers, but even our second tallest guy, Josh Hader, might be more on a committee than you think. However, its K-rate and peripherals are so good that it can still make an important contribution in any type of league. The same applies to his Bullpen colleague Devin Williams, who could also find himself in the mix for parades. We may have overrated him, but that just goes to show how difficult it is to navigate in this position. There aren’t many “safe things” to store, and there are even fewer “safe things” that actually have good ERAs and WHIPs.

RP is an important position, but the hardest position to get a handicap in March is. That said, you shouldn’t invest too much design capital. Yes, you would like a stud closer, maybe even two, but unless they have extremely high K-rates and have proven themselves over the past few seasons, you shouldn’t go too far. There will be plenty of closers showing up on the waiver wire year round. If you trust you to get them, there is no need to pass on more reliable clubs or starters.
