In a recent open letter, researchers warned that a warmer Arctic could lead to cold snaps across northern Europe due to “complex feedback mechanisms.”
According to Research & Knowledge, an international group of renowned scientists recently published an open letter (PDF) saying that melting ice in the Arctic is disrupting ocean currents in the Atlantic, causing “devastating and irreversible impacts, particularly for the Nordic countries.” could have, but also for other parts of the world.”

According to their publication in the journal Nature Communications, October 2024, doi: 10.1038/s41467-024-53401-3, melting of sea ice during the last interglacial had a significant impact on the density and salinity of seawater, thus leading to significant changes in the Ocean currents and heat distribution in the oceans.
The researchers examined sediment cores collected in the North Sea and reconstructed surface temperatures and salinity and found that these processes have led to a significant drop in temperatures in northern Europe.
According to Mohamed Ezat: “Our discovery that increasing melting of Arctic sea ice in Earth's past has likely led to significant cooling in northern Europe is alarming.”
He adds: “The impact, particularly on the Nordic countries, would likely be catastrophic, including severe cooling in the region while surrounding regions warm.” This would mean a widening and deepening of the “cold spot” that is already developing over the subpolar Atlantic and will likely lead to unprecedented extreme weather.”
