Bill Gates: AI can help solve the “digital misinformation” problem
Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates said in an interview with Handelsblatt, a German news outlet published on Thursday, that AI should be seen as a tool to combat “digital misinformation” and “political polarization”.
When asked about the spread of “misinformation” about AI, Gates referred to the events of January 6, 2021 as an “attack on the Capitol.” He said:
I am certainly concerned about political polarization and I know the situation in the US best. I didn’t expect people to attack the Capitol or deny the validity of election results. I’m in shock about this.
We cannot blame the AI for that. That happened. It might have been amplified by digital channels allowing various conspiracy theories like QAnon or whatever to be propagated by people who wanted to believe those things. So the digital tools could have played a supporting role.
Gates portrayed “climate change” as an existential threat to humanity and called for government action to enforce a reduction and eventual elimination of fossil fuel consumption and associated carbon dioxide emissions.

“How do we solve the digital misinformation that is a factor of polarization? We need to consider AI”
It’s hard to say whether Bill Gates believes AI is part of the problem or part of the solution, or both. However, the people who actually develop AIs seem to have very specific ideas about what they want to do with them.
