Lena Waithe proclaims new label Hillman Grad Information – in search of the following Lil Nas X, Jazmine Sullivan, Summer time Walker, HER or Miguel
#Roommate, it’s no secret that Lena Waithe is one of the busiest women in Hollywood with a wide variety of television and movie projects – but now she’s adding a new business that is all about music. In a recent interview, Lena Waithe officially announced that she was starting her own record label in hopes of bringing back the “old vibe and nostalgia” that music lacks these days.
In an exclusive interview with @RollingStone for the “Future Of Music” edition, Lena Waithe spoke in detail about her brand new record label and how important music has always been in her life – and how she also plays a crucial role in her film and television projects. Her label Hillman Grad Records has an exclusive joint venture with legendary record label Def Jam and she hopes to sign some of her own legendary acts.
“As I got older and started more in my career, people started really picking up on the music choices in the movie or television I was making, and that really appealed to me,” she said. She also cited Lil Nas X, Jazmine Sullivan, Summer Walker, HER, and Miguel as the types of artists she is looking to sign based on their storytelling and continued growth.
She went on to add:
“I don’t want to do the typical. We’re not going to come out with 10 albums a year. It’s about finding really interesting artists who have a real drive and want to find out who they are over time. We really want artists who can grow. Yes, it includes albums and singles, but for me it’s about personality and moments.
I think there is this desire for artists to do the same thing over and over again. I really miss seeing an artist and their albums change and change with everyone. But I want to bring back some of that old vibe and the nostalgia and rollout of actual singles. “
Largely due to her very busy schedule, Lena Waithe has not yet confirmed when she plans to release new music or sign new acts on her label – but she is actively trying to do both.
