Head coach Steve Wojciechowski is after seven seasons with Marquette, the school announced on Friday.
The Golden Eagles finished last season at 13:14 and 8:11 in the Big East.
Marquette sporting director Bill Scholl said he and Wojciechowski met at the end of the season to discuss a possible way forward but apparently failed to reach a consensus.
“We have reached one of those forks where we have not necessarily agreed on the right next steps,” said Scholl on Friday during a video conference. “Then the decision was made that it was probably the right time for it.” go in a new direction. ”
Wojciechowski took part in two NCAA tournaments in his seven seasons with the Golden Eagles and lost each time in the first round. Last season, Marquette would have played a third NCAA tournament behind Markus Howard’s standout game, but the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
That season, Marquette had notable wins against Wisconsin and Creighton in December, but failed to add to them the rest of the way. A stretch of six losses in seven games in the middle of the Big East game ended the Golden Eagles’ NCAA hopes despite winning four out of five by the end of the season.
Scholl called Wojciechowski “a phenomenal guy” and credited him for bringing in good people and doing things right.
“In as many ways as you want to judge a program, it really knocked it off the ground,” said Scholl [with] The support we offer him is pretty consistent in my opinion at the top of the Great East, a fairly regular stream of NCAA commandments, and the occasional opportunity to go deep in March. In seven seasons Wojciechowski went a total of 128-95 and 59-68 in the league.
The school announced on Friday that it would immediately begin a national search for a replacement.
