US midfielder Tyler Adams said the next coach of the men's national team must be “ruthless” and have a proven track record of delivering results.
The U.S. Soccer Federation is currently searching for a new head coach after Gregg Berhalter was fired from his post following the USMNT's elimination in the group stage of the Copa América on home soil this summer.
“I think for me and the young team, and given our situation, we need someone who is almost a little ruthless, who will put everyone in their place and understand, 'Listen, this is what needs to be done and this is how we're going to do it,'” he told Men in Blazers.
“And there are no ifs and buts. It's not really a conversation, it's more of a decision that has to be made and that's how we're going to play.”

Whoever succeeds Berhalter will be tasked with leading the team to the World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico, in less than two years. And Adams says that because of the limited time frame, finding a coach with a proven track record is critical.
“I think that's always the best way to go when you're short on time,” he added. “You see it all the time in the Premier League with managers being sacked after three or four games. The best way to get results is to bring in someone who you know what they're going to do before they arrive.”
“I don't think we have much time left. If everyone wants to focus on the goal, which is the 2026 World Cup, and we want to get the best possible result, we need to bring in someone who has achieved results.”
U.S. Soccer Team sporting director Matt Crocker has said he wants to hire the best coach possible, “whether he's from the U.S. or elsewhere,” and has set a goal of having someone in place in time for the USMNT's friendlies against Canada and New Zealand next month.
So far, both former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and US-born Hoffenheim coach Pellegrino Matarazzo have ruled out their chances of a place in the race.
Adams is highly unlikely to play in the United States' match against Canada on September 7 after recently undergoing back surgery that will keep him out of Bournemouth's Premier League season.
