Victims of Jen Shah’s telemarketing rip-off warn others

Two victims of the reality star’s telemarketing ploy have broken their silence with former The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah being sentenced to six and a half years in prison.

During a Thursday morning broadcast of Good Morning America, ABC News correspondent Erielle Reshef spoke to some of the many victims of the program, which she says has “ruined lives.”

Victims share their stories to protect others

One of those people — a 75-year-old named Tricia — ended up losing half of her life savings.

Specifically, she coughed up $47,000 “for making a false promise that Shah’s company would help her build an online business.” She also noted that Shah’s plan also sounded “very legitimate,” pointing out, “I’m not a stupid person.”

“I’ll tell the world: I was stupid enough to get caught cheating. And I’m not a stupid person, but I made a big mistake.”

Additionally, Tricia shared that while she prefers to keep the situation to herself, she doesn’t want others “to have to go through this shame [she] went through.”

Another victim named Molly McLaughlin, 44, also shared her story.

“I probably spent about $44,000 on six credit cards. All [which] went bankrupt because of course I couldn’t afford it.”

Scheme left victims in financial ruin: ‘I don’t have money to take care of myself’

Ultimately, since the victims were largely made up of vulnerable groups such as the elderly, Jen Shah’s plan did quite a bit of damage.

For Tricia, she says she fell into a “deep depression.”

“I’m just recovering from a deep depression… You get to a point where there’s no way out.”

The 75-year-old added: “I don’t have the money to take care of myself [anymore].”
