Will Ryan Lochte make it to the US Olympic workforce? Time, TV and extra because the swimmer battles for a spot on the 2021 workforce
Ryan Lochte is only one step away from returning to the Olympic stage five years after leaving it in disgrace.
The six-time gold medalist will swim for a spot on Friday on the US team that will travel to Tokyo next month. He is in the final of the men’s 200 meter individual medley at the USA Swimming Olympics in Omaha, Neb.
Should Lochte qualify, he would take part in his fifth Olympic Games. His first games were in 2004 and his last was in 2016 when he helped spark an international incident by falsely claiming he and a teammate were robbed at gunpoint at a gas station in Brazil. USA Swimming and the US Olympic Committee suspended him for 10 months for his actions. In 2018 he received a 14-month doping ban.
Here’s what you should know about Lochte’s attempt to become a five-time Olympian:

How can Ryan Lochte qualify for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics?
Lochte will make it to the US squad if he finishes first or second in the 200 IM final on Friday night and scores a time that meets Olympic qualifying standards. In the semifinals on Thursday, he qualified sixth; Eight swimmers will compete against each other in the final. His semi-final time was 1 minute, 58.65 seconds, 46 / 100ths of a second slower than runner-up Chase Kalisz.
Lochte swam 1: 58.48 in the lead, which is 4.48 seconds below his world record time 10 years ago.
“There are no perfect races and I have to improve a lot, especially this race. That was just not good,” Lochte said after his semi-final to Michele Tafoya of NBC at the pool.
Michael Andrew, the unaffordable final favorite, swam 1: 55.26 in his semifinals.
Lochte was also entered in the men’s 100-meter butterfly, but was placed in 38th place for the heats and could not make it to the semi-finals on Friday morning. He failed to qualify in the 200 meter freestyle earlier this week.
In which final will Ryan Lochte compete?
Lochte, 36, competes in the men’s 200-meter individual layer final. The race consists of four 50-meter laps in the pool. Each lap is swum with a different swimming style: in sequence, there are butterfly, back, chest and freestyle. Lochte won gold over 400m medley at the 2012 London Games and still holds the world record over 200 IM, but he set that mark in 2011.
When will Ryan Lochte swim around an Olympic course?
The men’s 200 IM final will swim sometime after 9 p.m. ET.
Which channel shows Ryan Lochte’s race?
NBC will televise the IM 200 final. You can live stream the event on the NBC Sports app or on NBCOlympics.com.
