Resonado calls the technology Flat Core Speaker (FCS). As the name suggests, it can be used to create speakers with a much smaller overall depth, thereby increasing the number of speakers installed. Erikc Perez, Resonado co-founder and chief marketing officer, says FCS achieves these benefits without sacrificing sound performance.

Conventional speaker drivers use an electrodynamic architecture in which an electromagnet and voice coil are placed under a diaphragm. When electrical pulses are sent through the magnet, the voice coil moves, causing the diaphragm to vibrate, creating the sounds that we ultimately hear. Resonado’s FCS technology doesn’t reinvent this wheel so much as it reshapes and rearranges the components.

Instead of using a donut-shaped magnet that surrounds a cylindrical voice coil, an FCS driver suspends a flattened voice coil between two bar magnets. This arrangement keeps the diaphragm flat rather than the deeper, cone-shaped shape that normal drivers require, while also distributing the voice coil force more evenly across the surface of the diaphragm.

Unlike more exotic alternatives to electrodynamic drivers such as planar magnetic or electrostatic drivers, FCS uses the same materials as traditional speakers. This helps bring the cost of FCS-based speakers much closer to that of traditional designs, Perez said.

Resonado Labs doesn’t make speakers – although it has released a crowdfunded proof of concept – and prefers to license its FCS patents to companies that can take advantage of its benefits.

Our first real taste of what FCS can do will come later this year. Thanks to a partnership with China’s Soundlab, we will see vehicles equipped with FCS speakers. Airstream, the legendary US RV brand, has also committed to using FCS components in its 2022 range of touring coaches.

However, Resonado has its sights set on a whole spectrum of audio products for the mass market, from sound bars to smart speakers. Recently, a new version of its driver called FCS Bidirectional has been developed that allows a single magnetic / voice coil motor to drive two horizontally opposed diaphragms at the same time. This design could offer the same space-saving benefits as the recently released KEF KC62 subwoofer, but in an even smaller package.

The Mars helicopter is on-line and able to fly

Earth is the only planet in the solar system with airplanes that allow permanent flight. It’s easy to miss how difficult it is to land on Mars. The alarming fact is that only about half of the Mars missions made it successfully! One of the main reasons for this is the density of the Martian atmosphere. Fortunately, Ingenuity survived the dangerous descent from space when it was strapped to the rover’s belly.

One of the main obstacles to landing on Mars will continue to cause problems for our heroic helicopter as it is safe on the surface. The atmospheric pressure on the surface of Mars is only about 1% of the earth’s pressure. The top of Mount Everest is only a third of the atmospheric pressure of sea level. While this is believed to be at the limit of what humans can survive (or, unfortunately, beyond in some cases), it is well beyond the reach of terrestrial helicopters. Compared to Mars, the air on Everest might as well be pea soup. The ridiculously diluted air on Mars makes the helicopter flight extremely challenging. Ingenuity spins its two counter-rotating rotors five times faster than terrestrial helicopters, about forty times per second. Ingenuity is also light, only about 1.8 kilograms. The rotors are approximately 1.2 meters in diameter and relatively oversized to maximize lift.

Fortunately, Mars Ingenuity is taking a break in one area. Mars has only about a third of the surface gravity of the earth. If you were to keep the plane on earth, it would feel about as heavy as a two-liter bottle (with a few sips, thankfully). On Mars, the exact same airplane would feel like a 20-ounce (591 milliliter) bottle.

The helicopter does not play a crucial role in the scientific mission of perseverance. It is essentially a technological demonstration or a proof-of-concept. The data collected by Ingenuity will be used to develop future Martian aircraft. It’s solar powered and has electronics that have been miniaturized to keep everything light enough for flight.

Ingenuity is also completely autonomous. Because of the extreme distance to Mars, the helicopter mission leaders cannot fly the aircraft in real time the way terrestrial drone pilots can use joysticks to maneuver at home. The time it takes for a signal to travel from Earth to Mars is longer than the total flight time of the helicopter! If Ingenuity successfully demonstrates aerodynamic powered flight on Mars, it will be a milestone that is second to none. One can only imagine the effects that flying Mars explorers could have on future missions. A future helicopter could work with a larger rover and act as a scout, carefully monitoring the terrain and helping the parent rover more efficiently plan a safe and scientifically interesting course. Perhaps a helicopter could take samples from a wide area and deliver them to a rover or a stationary facility using sophisticated scientific instruments. Even a stand-alone helicopter mission could be designed. There are many cliffs, ice caps, volcanoes or otherwise inaccessible parts of the Martian landscape that are likely to be permanently inaccessible to ground rovers or even humans.

The world’s forbidden deserts could be the best places on earth to harvest solar energy – the most abundant and cleanest source of energy we have. The deserts are spacious, relatively flat, rich in silicon – the raw material for the semiconductors from which solar cells are made – and without sunlight. In fact, the ten largest solar systems in the world are all located in deserts or arid regions.

Researchers envision that it might be possible to turn the world’s largest desert, the Sahara, into a huge solar park that can meet four times the world’s current energy needs. Plans have been drawn up for projects in Tunisia and Morocco that will supply electricity to millions of households in Europe.

While the black surfaces of solar panels absorb most of the sunlight that reaches them, only a fraction (about 15%) of this incident energy is converted into electricity. The rest is returned to the environment as heat. The panels are usually much darker than the ground they cover, so a large area of ​​solar cells absorbs a lot of extra energy and gives off as heat, which affects the climate.

If these effects were only local, they could not play a role in a sparsely populated and barren desert. However, the scale of the facilities that would be required to contain the world’s fossil fuel needs would be huge, spanning thousands of square kilometers. The heat given off by an area of ​​this size is redistributed in the atmosphere by the air flow and has regional and even global effects on the climate.

A greener Sahara

A 2018 study used a climate model to simulate the lower albedo effects on the land surface of deserts caused by the installation of massive solar farms. The albedo is a measure of how well surfaces reflect sunlight. Sand, for example, reflects much more than a solar panel and therefore has a higher albedo.

The model showed that a solar park size that reached 20% of the total area of ​​the Sahara triggers a feedback loop. The heat given off by the darker solar panels (compared to the highly reflective desert floor) creates a steep temperature differential between the land and the surrounding oceans, which ultimately lowers the air pressure on the surface and causes moist air to rise and condense into raindrops. With more monsoon rains, plants grow and the desert reflects less solar energy because the vegetation absorbs light better than sand and earth. When there are more plants, more water is evaporated, creating a more humid environment for vegetation to spread out.

This scenario may seem fanciful, but studies suggest that a similar feedback loop preserved much of the Saharan green during the African wet season that ended only 5,000 years ago.

So a huge solar farm could generate ample power to meet global needs while turning one of the most hostile environments on earth into a habitable oasis. Sounds perfect right?

Not quite. In a recent study, we used an advanced Earth system model to study exactly how solar parks in the Sahara interact with the climate. Our model takes into account the complex feedback loops between the interacting spheres of the world’s climate – the atmosphere, the ocean and the land and its ecosystems. It emerged that there could be unintended impacts in remote parts of the country and ocean, offsetting regional advantages over the Sahara itself.

Drought in the Amazon, cyclones in Vietnam

The coverage of 20% of the Sahara with solar parks increases the local temperatures in the desert according to our model by 1.5 ° C. With a coverage of 50% the temperature increase is 2.5 ° C. This warming is ultimately caused by the atmosphere and the Ocean movement spread all over the world, increasing the average temperature of the world by 0.16 ° C at 20% coverage and 0.39 ° C at 50% coverage. However, the global temperature shift is not uniform – the polar regions would warm more than the tropics, which would increase sea ice loss in the Arctic. This could further accelerate warming as the melting sea ice exposes dark water, which absorbs much more solar energy.

This massive new heat source in the Sahara is reorganizing global air and ocean circulation and affecting precipitation patterns around the world. The narrow band of heavy rainfall in the tropics, which accounts for more than 30% of global precipitation and supports the rainforests of the Amazon and the Congo Basin, shifts northwards in our simulations. For the Amazon region, this leads to droughts as less moisture comes from the ocean. About the same amount of additional rainfall that falls over the Sahara due to the surface darkening effects of solar panels is lost from the Amazon. The model also predicts more frequent tropical cyclones on the North American and East Asian coasts.

Some important processes are still missing from our model, e.g. B. Dust from great deserts. Saharan dust carried by the wind is an important source of nutrients for the Amazon and the Atlantic. A greener Sahara could therefore have an even bigger global effect than our simulations suggested.

We are only just beginning to understand the potential consequences of building massive solar parks in the world’s deserts. Solutions like these may facilitate society’s transition from fossil fuels, but Earth system studies like ours underscore the importance of considering the many coupled reactions of the atmosphere, oceans, and land surface when examining their benefits and risks.
