Virgin Galactic reaches the house frontier over New Mexico for the primary time

Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo rocket plane crossed its 50-mile-high space boundary over New Mexico for the first time today, after months of challenges.

The trip by VSS Unity marks the first time a spacecraft has been launched so high from a New Mexico spaceport. Unity passed the 50-mile mark twice during tests at California’s Mojave Air and Space Port, in 2018 and 2019. Since then, the plane and its WhiteKnightTwo carrier airplane, dubbed VMS Eve, have been transferred to their operational home base at New Mexico’s Spaceport America.

“Today’s flight sees New Mexico become the third U.S. state to launch humans to space,” after Florida and California, Virgin Galactic said in a post-mission press release.

Virgin Galactic goes with the U.S. Air Force’s 50-mile definition for the boundary of space — rather than the internationally recognized 100-kilometer (62-mile) boundary, known as the Karman Line.

Today’s flight followed the standard profile for a SpaceShipTwo trip: The twin-fuselage Eve made an airplane-style takeoff from Spaceport America with Unity bolted to its underbelly. Around the target altitude of 44,000 feet, Unity was released from its mothership and fired up its hybrid rocket engine to rise spaceward.

Test pilots Dave Mackay and CJ Sturckow guided Unity to its peak altitude of 55.45 miles, cheered on by Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson and other VIPs who gathered at Spaceport America.

At the top of the ride, Mackay and Sturckow experienced a few minutes of weightlessness and saw a wide swath of the American Southwest spread beneath the black sky of space. Passengers are due to get a similar experience once Virgin Galactic begins commercial flights.

Unity glided back to a runway landing at Spaceport America — and Eve’s pilots, Kelly Latimer and Michael Masucci, landed their mothership soon afterward. Virgin Galactic noted that Sturckow, a former NASA astronaut, is now the first person to take part in space launches from three states. (The others include Florida space shuttle launches and Unity’s California test flight in 2018.)

Branson noted that the drive to create the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport began in New Mexico 15 years ago.

’Today, we launched the first human spaceflight from that very same place, marking an important milestone for both Virgin Galactic and New Mexico,” he said. “I am proud of the team for their hard work and grateful to the people of New Mexico who have been unwavering in their commitment for commercial spaceflight from day one. Their belief and support have made today’s historic achievement possible.”

Today’s success came after months of challenges: Last December, Unity’s blastoff to space had to be aborted just moments after rocket ignition, due to an electromagnetic interference issue.

This month, a book titled “Test Gods” revealed that a faulty seal in Unity’s horizontal stabilizer had to be fixed after the rocket plane’s previous flight in February 2019. And a couple of weeks ago, Virgin Galactic had to check a maintenance issue relating to Eve’s tail. Engineers determined that the tail was good to go for today’s test.

Virgin Galactic’s schedule calls for an assessment of the flight test’s results, to be followed by another space shot with four company employees riding along as passengers. If all goes well, Branson himself would then take a ride, and a $2 million research flight for the Italian Air Force would mark the start of commercial trips for spacefliers.

Today’s test flight also had a commercial element to it: Unity carried several payloads for NASA’s Flight Opportunities program, including experiments designed to measure electromagnetic fields, study the behavior of dust in space conditions, and test technologies for doing surgery in space.

The next few months are due to bring more milestones in commercial spaceflight. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space venture is planning to send people on a suborbital space ride for the first time in July. One of the seats for that flight is being auctioned off, and the current high bid amounts to $2.8 million.

A privately funded orbital flight in SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is scheduled for liftoff by as early as September, and another all-civilian crew is training for a SpaceX ride to the International Space Station in January.

The White Home is partnering with relationship apps to lift consciousness about vaccines

Tinder has encouraged users to keep “virtual” appointments during the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to asking about your perfect day or favorite vacation spot, popular dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, Bumble and Plenty of Fish ask members if they have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

The White House announced on Friday that it is partnering with the apps to raise awareness of vaccines among young adults and encourage them to get vaccinated.

Andy Slavitt, White House chief Covid official, said one of the apps, OkCupid, says members who show their vaccination status are “14% more likely to get a match. We finally found what we all have makes vaccination more attractive. “

More than 60% of adults in the US have received at least one dose, but 42% of adults ages 18 to 34 say they are unwilling to get vaccinated, according to a survey by Quinnipiac in February. Young adults between the ages of 20 and 49 were responsible for 70% of the spread of Covid last year, according to a study published in the journal Science. Doctors also report that more young adults were admitted to hospitals with severe symptoms due to the spread of more dangerous variants.

Slavitt announced last week that his 19-year-old son had “long-covid,” a term used to describe those who show symptoms long after the initial infection. Slavitt said his son was still short of breath and had frequent flu-like symptoms six months after the initial infection. Researchers say that long-covid has been seen in many young adults who initially developed mild symptoms.

As more and more variants emerge, the summer weather approaches and the mask mandates decrease, efforts to reach hesitant young adults intensify.

“The pandemic has also negatively affected the social lives of young people. Social distancing and dating have always been a challenging combination,” Slavitt told reporters.

As part of President Joe Biden’s goal of having 70% of adults in the US vaccinated with at least one shot by July 4th, Slavitt announced that dating apps like Tinder, Lot of Fish, OkCupid, BLK, Hinge, Match , Chispa, Hummel and Badoo will begin rolling out features to promote vaccination among users. The apps collectively serve more than 50 million people in the United States and many are young adults.

Badges are displayed in the apps that a user can view on their profile to determine that they have been or should be vaccinated.

Additional functions include access to premium content such as “Boosts”, “Super-Likes” and “Super-Swipes” for vaccinated people, as well as search filters that allow users to search specifically for other people who have been vaccinated or are planning a vaccination.

OkCupid said its features will be implemented on Monday; Chispa and BLK announced that their apps will be implemented on June 1st. The other apps will start rolling out the new features in the next few weeks.

“In all seriousness, people care about other things in life besides their vaccine. But the vaccine allows people to get back to the things they enjoy in life,” Slavitt said, noting that people want to know they are be able to resume their normal life in a safe manner.

IIHF Males’s World Championship 2021: time, TV channels, stay stream, the place, when, schedule

It’s that special time of year when the Stanley Cup playoff action gets hot and the ice hockey world can also watch their countries go for gold.

After the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IIHF Men’s World Championship is back in 2021. 16 teams will take part in the 17-day tournament that is set to take place in Latvia.

Typically, the 2021 tournament is an opportunity for NHL players who are not out of the postseason to continue their trading. It’s packed with young people trying to prove their NHL worth, including a series of prospects to be elaborated in July. The hopefuls of the first round include the American Matty Beniers (who won gold in the juniors in 2021) and the Canadian Owen Power. There are also current top draft picks like Canada’s Cole Perfetti (Jets) and Braden Schneider (Rangers).

USA Hockey is aiming for its third gold medal (1933 and 1960) while Hockey Canada is aiming for the No. 26 gold medal and the first since 2016. If Canada takes the gold, it will bind Russia / the Soviet Union the most in tournament history.

Everything you need to know about the 2021 Ice Hockey World Cup is here, including the ability to watch games on TV and stream them online, as well as the full schedule, results and leaderboard.

When is the Men’s World Cup 2021?

16 teams, divided into two groups, will compete against each other in the preliminary round. Each team will compete against the other seven teams in their group for the first 12 days of the competition, which ends on June 1st.

The four best teams in each group after the preliminary rounds will reach the quarter-finals on June 3rd. After the semi-finals on June 5th, the bronze and gold medal games will take place on Sunday, June 6th.

Where is the men’s World Cup 2021?

The 2021 edition will take place in Riga, Latvia, on two ice rinks: the Arena Riga and the Olympic Sports Center. It’s been 15 years since Riga hosted the tournament. Sweden won the gold there in 2006.

This year’s tournament was originally supposed to be organized jointly by Belarus (Minsk) and Latvia. However, the International Ice Hockey Federation postponed it in February due to political unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Which channel will the Men’s World Cup 2021 be broadcast on?

  • TV station (USA): NHL network
  • Live Steam (Canada): FuboTV, Sling TV
  • TV channels (Canada): TSN
  • Live Stream (Canada): TSN approx.

In the US, every American game is shown on the NHL Network along with selected games from other countries. NHL Network can be streamed on fuboTV and Sling TV. In Canada, TSN will broadcast every game in the 2021 tournament, with selected games also appearing exclusively on TSN.ca or the TSN app.

Which teams will take part in the Men’s World Cup 2021?

16 teams, divided into two groups of eight, take part.

Group A Group B.
ROC Canada
Sweden Finland
Czech Republic United States
Switzerland Germany
Slovakia Latvia

Why is Russia listed as the “Republic of China”?

Last December, the World Anti-Doping Agency excluded Russia from international competition for four years. The ban includes Olympic Games and World Championships, and the flag or name of Russia cannot be used. However, athletes are not excluded from the competition, but can only do so under a neutral flag.

ROC stands for Russian Olympic Committee, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is played instead of the national anthem.

When is Canada against USA?

There will be a battle for North America in this tournament as the two teams are in the same group. The teams will meet on Sunday, May 23 at 1:15 p.m. ET.

Joplin Catastrophe & Invoice McKibben Ten Years Later – What’s Up With It?

Reposted by NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THAT

May 22, 2021

By Paul Homewood

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Joplin, Missouri tornado, which killed 161 people. This was the first three-digit number since 1953. At the time, the usual suspects were quickly emerging from the woodworks, blaming global warming:

Caution: It is extremely important not to make any connections. If you see pictures of debris like this week’s footage from Joplin, MO, don’t be surprised: Does this have anything to do with the tornado outbreak three weeks ago in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Or the huge eruption a few weeks earlier (What? Together, this was the most active April for tornadoes in US history. No, that means nothing.

It is far better to think of these as isolated, unpredictable, discrete events. It is inadvisable to try to associate them in your head with the Texas fires – fires that have burned more of America by this time this year than wildfires in years past. Texas and the adjacent parts of Oklahoma and New Mexico are drier than ever – the drought is worse than the Dust Bowl. But don’t be surprised if they’re somehow connected.

If you were wondering, you should also be wondering whether this year’s record midwestern snowfalls and rains – which are causing record flooding along the Mississippi – might be related in any way. And then you may find that your thoughts are wandering about global warming and that climatologists have been predicting for years that if we flood the atmosphere with carbon, we will also start drying and flooding the planet, as warm air holds more water vapor as cold air.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/a-link-between-climate-change-and-joplin-tornadoes-never/2011/05/23/AFrVC49G_story.html

In fact, McKibben’s disgusting climate porn couldn’t have been more wrong. 2011 was nothing more than an outlier, and since then the frequency of strong tornadoes has continued to decline compared to the global cool-down years in the 1970s:

https://www.spc.noaa.gov/wcm/#data

There has only been one EF-5 tornado in the past decade, the Moore tornado in 2013; This corresponds to a long-term average of almost one per year.

Fortunately, the number of deaths from tornadoes has also fallen, with an annual average of 31 over the past decade.

Will McKibben now publicly apologize for misleading the public back then?

FOOTNOTE

McKibben also used the Texas drought in 2011 as another example of the effects of global warming. Needless to say, he was wrong about that too:

All the pieces we all know to date

Italy, Iceland, Greece and Spain now allow or are opening their borders to people who’ve been vaccinated or who recently tested negative for Covid-19. The European Union has agreed to open its borders to more vaccinated tourists, including from the U.S.

The question is: How will individuals prove their vaccine or Covid status?

As of Wednesday, almost half of the total U.S. population had received at least one Covid-19 vaccine dose. New Covid infections in the country continue to drop. As of Thursday, the seven-day average of daily new Covid infections is at its lowest level since June 22, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

That trend is helping people return to pre-pandemic activities — from concerts to indoor dining to live sporting events and even international travel. Vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks or physically distance indoors or out, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said earlier this month.

Retailers like Walmart and Costco and hotel chains including Hyatt dropped their mask requirements for vaccinated customers this month, unless it’s required in local rules. U.S. officials have said they are largely relying on people being honest about their vaccine status, and retailers and hotel chains have said they don’t plan to check for a proof of a vaccine.

Officials in charge of overseeing international travel require more than the honor system. Federal officials require U.S.-bound international travelers, including U.S. citizens, to show proof of a negative Covid test result to board flights.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security said DHS officials don’t check passengers’ Covid test results upon entry — that is up to the airlines.

As airlines like United, Delta and American ramp up trans-Atlantic service, they are encouraging travelers to upload health documents online.

The travel industry has urged the Biden administration to create a set of standards for digital health credentials in an effort to lift travel restrictions that have devastated demand for leisure and business trips abroad for more than a year. The administration has said it will leave the task of developing digital health credentials up to the private sector. Federal officials also said they don’t intend to keep a database of vaccination records; that will be left to states.

Enter digital health apps. Sometimes referred to as vaccine passports, several of these platforms are already in development and with some in use, including partnerships with airlines and local governments.

Here is where things stand on vaccine passports in the U.S.:

What is a health passport?

Digital health passports — also called vaccine passports — are platforms for smartphones that allow access to an individual’s health data, such as Covid test results or vaccination status. Israel and Denmark have already made platforms available and other countries are working on their own.

When individuals are vaccinated in the U.S., they are given proof in the form of a CDC-issued card. Airlines, which don’t want staff to have another piece of traveler information to check, are eyeing digitized versions that could easily be scanned.

Do I need one?

The health passports are not mandatory but might become more useful as more countries and attractions reopen.

Countries that have recently opened or plan to open their borders to foreign tourists like Iceland and Greece say travelers must show proof that they are vaccinated against Covid-19 or proof of a recent negative Covid-19 test.

But so far, digital health certificates are not required.

“Certificates may be in paper or electronic format,” Sveinn Gudmarsson, communications director at Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, said by email. “Border control will evaluate whether a certificate is valid and will consult a representative of the Chief Epidemiologist [health care worker] as needed.”

The U.S. since January has required all inbound travelers from abroad, including citizens, to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test, even if they are vaccinated.

In California, venues can allow more people in if the establishment verifies that they have been vaccinated.

Who makes them?

There are several platforms already out there. IBM has developed New York State’s Excelsior Pass, which was tested at a New York Nets game in February. The app uses blockchain to communicate with state vaccination records or with health providers. The display shows a simple go or no-go sign, not the actual test result.

The International Air Transport Association, a trade group that represents nearly 300 airlines worldwide, has rolled out its own digital health passport. Singapore started accepting Covid-19 test results on that platform this month.

Some airlines like JetBlue Airways have announced trials of another digital health passport by The Commons Project Foundation, which is called Common Pass.

United Airlines recently said it would expand its own app to allow travelers to book Covid-19 test appointments online, results of which will upload automatically and let customers know whether they can travel to their destination.

The European Union and Israel are developing their own digital health certificates.

Why are they controversial?

Digital health certificates have drummed up concerns over how secure customers’ data will be with third-party apps communicating with databases containing sensitive health information. It has also raised concerns about inequality, since the platforms mainly work on individuals’ smartphones.

The governors of Florida, Texas and Arizona have moved to stop businesses from requiring proof of vaccination from customers. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed an executive order last month that bans these certificates as a requirement to receive services and said that vaccinations are the choice of individuals not the government.

Even the World Health Organization said it is against requiring proof of a vaccine to enter another country “given the limited (although growing) evidence about the performance of vaccines in reducing transmission and the persistent inequity in the global vaccine distribution.”

Will I need to verify vaccination forever?

That is still unclear, just as it’s not clear when other Covid-era rules like masks on planes or public transportation will last. Even the travel industry, one of the most devastated by the pandemic, has its reservations.

Willie Walsh, former CEO of British Airways’ parent International Consolidated Airlines Group, and current director-general of IATA, has said he doesn’t want proof of vaccines to become a permanent fixture.

“These are measures that may be necessary as temporary arrangements while we go through this crisis, but once we’re through it, we want to see these restrictions permanently removed so people can get back to traveling as they experienced back in 2019,” he said earlier this month.

‘Like using a dust bike in a grocery store’

MONACO — The Tip Top bar has stood at 11 Avenues de Spelugues in Monaco since 1938.

Its frontage has witnessed every Monaco Grand Prix since the second World War and, legend has it, Graham Hill once danced on the bistro’s tables following one of his five Monaco victories in the 1960s.

In the COVID-reality of 2021 however, the Tip Top’s tables are stacked behind closed doors, partying is strictly limited by Monaco’s 11 p.m. curfew and a sign by the entrance reminds patrons to wear a face mask for the safety of the staff.

2 Related

Even in the rarefied world of Monaco, where studio apartments start at €2 million and supercars outnumber taxis, the pandemic has made left its mark. Proof, if it was needed, that money isn’t the solution to all of life’s problems.

Fans will be present at this weekend’s race — the 78th running of Formula One’s most famous grand prix — but the temporary grandstands dotted around the circuit will only be 40 percent full.

The lucky 7,500 that have managed to get hold of a ticket must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test if they are travelling from outside Monaco, carry official government documents at all times and wear a face mask as they attempt to remain 1.5 metres from one another in the network of narrow passageways around the circuit.

Yet for an hour on Thursday morning, just metres away from the entrance to the Tip Top, an air of normality returned to the principality of Monaco.

For the first time in 24 months, the sound of a Formula One car reverberated off the concrete apartment blocks of Monte Carlo and, as is the local tradition at this time in May, the residents of Monaco took to their balconies to see what all the fuss was about.

The Tip Top sits just 200 metres beyond the highest point of the circuit, and the following half mile of track winds its way back towards sea level through two switchback corners called Mirabeau and the Fairmont Hairpin.

Watching on the TV, the drive looks as pleasant as the scenery, but stood trackside you see, hear and smell the forces involved.

The Fairmont Haripin, named after the hotel that overlooks the track on one side and hangs over the Mediterranean on the other, is the slowest corner in Formula One.

Max Verstappen exits the Fairmont Hairpin during Thursday practice for the Monaco Grand Prix. Clive Rose – Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty Images

That may not sound very exciting, but even here, in their slowest moments of a flying lap, F1 cars are a thrill to watch up close.

On the approach to the Fairmont, the drivers cross from one side of the track to the other, flash over road markings designating a motorcycle parking bay and haul on the brakes.

As they flick down the gears, the clunks and bangs from the transmission sound like a Civil War re-enactment as the gearbox reluctantly accepts the driver’s request for first gear.

The car slows to 30mph, which happens to be the speed limit for the rest of the year when the same patch of tarmac is clogged with scooters, cars and buses crawling on their commute.

Once the gearbox has sounded its battle cry, it’s the turn of the front tyres to chirp in protest as the driver whips the steering wheel to the left and hits full lock.

Initially the tyres are unwilling to play along, scrubbing and jutting across the track surface before finally biting and hooking the car into the corner.

At two metres wide, an F1 car is not designed to turn through such a tight radius, and it shows.

The whole vehicle appears to resist the manoeuvre, and the front wing takes some collateral damage as its titanium tip scrapes across the road, leaving a trail of sparks in its wake.

To complete the 180-degree rotation, drivers need to boot the throttle and slide the car up against the raised kerb stones on the right, risking a potential puncture if the tyre makes contact.

It’s an undignified few seconds for such a fine piece of engineering, but grand prix cars have been tackling this exact hairpin for 92 years and it remains a remarkable sight to behold.

It’s like riding a dirt bike in a supermarket

Three-time world champion Nelson Piquet, who raced in F1 in the late 1970s, the 1980s and the early 1990s, famously compared driving a lap of Monaco to “riding a bicycle around your living room”.

But in modern cars, which are multiple seconds a lap faster than they were in Piquet’s day, the analogy has stepped up a notch.

“It’s true, it’s like that,” 2018 Monaco Grand Prix winner Daniel Ricciardo told ESPN after Thursday practice.

“But I’d say it’s now like riding a dirt bike in a supermarket — it’s crazy.

“When you’re in the car, you’re absorbed by it all, so we don’t have time to think how crazy it is.

“I remember once I was watching Formula 2 car through the Swimming Pool [chicane] and into the Rascasse [corner], and I was just like, ‘it’s so narrow, it’s so fast … it just doesn’t make sense!’

“It’s still scary. But a good kind of scary.”

The tight Monaco circuit requires a different approach to any other on the F1 schedule and drivers must adapt to it in the space of just three hour-long practice sessions before qualifying.

“It’s so unique,” Ricciardo, who drives for McLaren, added.

“If you compare it to Barcelona, where we were two weeks ago [for the Spanish Grand Prix] and everything is kind of normal — you’ve got your 100 metre boards and you brake at them, it’s just not the same here.

“The 100 metre boards don’t mean anything [in Monaco], you’ve got to find different references, the grip is low and even your driving style is not that traditional.

“You’ve just got to figure it out on the bounce.”

As impressive as it is to watch F1 drivers live on their instincts during a qualifying lap at Monaco, the race itself is often an anti-climax.

The tight layout means overtaking is near impossible and races are often won on Saturday by qualifying on pole position and retaining the lead at the start of the race.

Ricciardo did exactly that when he won the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix, and he even managed to retain the lead once the hybrid element of his engine failed and reduced his car’s power output by 160 brake horsepower.

He celebrated the win by belly flopping into the swimming pool on top of Red Bull’s hospitality unit, instantly creating one of the most iconic Monaco photos of recent years.

“Somebody asked me about that race the other day and they said: ‘It was probably the best day of your life, wasn’t it?

“I said that those moments in the pool probably were the best moments of my life, but the day itself sucked!

“I hated the day because it was just full of stress and anxiety.

“Qualifying is still the most stressful day [of a Monaco weekend], but if you put it on pole you still have the stress of ‘if I don’t convert this into a win, then I’ve done the worst thing you can do in Monaco because you have to convert from pole’.

“I remember [two-time Monaco winner] Mark Webber came up to me that day when I was eating lunch — and obviously he was not trying to add pressure, he was trying to give me advice — but during all those moments I was just like ‘f—!’.

“I could really feel that everybody really wanted me to execute and to win, but I couldn’t escape anyone to focus on it.

“Even to the point that when I stopped on the grid after the formation lap and lined up in P1, I don’t know if it rained overnight, but there was still a little bit of water over by the inside barrier and I felt like I had parked the car too much on the right, and I felt like my right wheel was on a damp patch [which would impact the start].

“So even waiting on the grid for the other cars to get there, I was like ‘oh f—!’.

“Nothing about that race felt good other than leading into Turn 1.”

Even though there will be fewer fans and less atmosphere in the grandstands on Sunday, the racing at this year’s Monaco Grand Prix will be no different.

Whoever starts on pole position will likely have the same nerves, the same concerns on the grid and the same relief if they are still leading by the exit of Turn 1.

Despite a year’s absence and the presence of COVID protocols this weekend, the magic of Monaco is still here.

Comets have tails fabricated from fuel, mud … and metallic?

In space, the location of an object has a major impact on its temperature. The closer the object is to its star, the hotter it is, most likely. Heat then plays an important role in the materials that are present in the atmosphere of the object, if any. Lighter elements like hydrogen and helium and much easier to take on a gaseous state and create an atmosphere. So it was a surprise when two different teams found much heavier elements in the atmosphere of comets that were relatively far from the Sun. And one of these comets happened to come from another solar system.

Many comets are metallic, so it was not surprising that elemental metals such as iron and nickel are present on their surface. And when metallic comets approach the sun, these elements can sometimes sublimate into the cloud of dust that surrounds the comet. Astronomers have been observing this phenomenon for years and it makes sense given the temperatures.

UT video explaining the origin of comets.

When a team of astronomers at the University of Liege studied the atmosphere of a number of comets relatively far from the solar system, they found some strange spectral lines that they couldn’t explain. Using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), they studied comets three times farther from the Sun than Earth, making them cold and stable compared to nearby comets.

After some more research, the team found that the spectral lines they were looking at were representative of very weak signals for iron and nickel. Oddly enough, the two elements had almost the same concentration with about 1 g iron and 1 g nickel per 100 kg of water in the comet’s atmosphere. Closer to the Sun, where it is more common to find these heavier elements in the comet’s atmosphere, there is usually about ten times the amount of iron than nickel.

This could mean that there is a new material that contains iron and nickel and has a much lower sublimation temperature. Or there could still be unexplained reasons for the occurrence of these metals. However, the team has already made some progress, including re-analyzing other older data to check for faint spectral lines as well. Soon they will also have a new tool for the extremely large telescope, the mid-infrared ELT imager and spectrograph (METIS), which will allow them to determine the exact composition of the material that led to atmospheric iron and nickel.

Unfortunately, the team investigating the other object found with heavy metals in its atmosphere cannot use METIS to observe it. This is because Object 2I / Borisov is an interstellar comet that flowed through our solar system a few years ago, splitting in two, and flying out of range of our instruments.

This image was captured with the FORS2 instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope in late 2019 when Comet 2I / Borisov passed near the Sun. With the comet moving at breakneck speeds of about 175,000 kilometers per hour, the background stars appeared as streaks of light as the telescope followed the comet’s trajectory. The colors in these stripes add a certain disco flair to the image and are the result of the combination of observations in different wavelength bands highlighted by the different colors in this composite image.

However, the team used a tool they had on hand at the time – the X-Shooter Spectrograph as the VLT. While they did not find iron in Borisov’s atmosphere, they found atomic nickel. Given that the comet was 300 million kilometers from the Sun when it was observed, this is again surprising, as previous estimates would have expected the comet to be too cold to have atmospheric nickel.

While Borisov himself may be out of sight, we are likely to find other interstellar invaders in the near future as we know what to look for. With better observation tools and new theories to understand why these unexpected elements appear in cometary atmospheres, the future looks bright for cometary science.

Coi Leray tweeted about what sort of dedication she desires in A.

Know your worth and add taxes! There is nothing that can change the mind of a woman who knows what she wants and a man’s mind. When there are so many couples who are considered relationship goals, it is easy to get caught up in a seemingly perfect relationship. Coi Leray made it clear what kind of man she wants earlier this morning and made it clear that she wouldn’t tolerate a cheater.

Coi is ten toes to the fact that she will not share her husband with anyone. She tweeted, “I’ll never share my n ** a. I REPEAT! NIERRRRRRR. She further tweeted, “When I’m in a relationship, I’m not ready to be with myself until the day I die. If you’re not ready for that commitment, keep it moving.”

There was a mix of opinions in our comments section. One roommate wrote, “Period. Let’s not normalize giving these men a free pass. If you want an open relationship. I’m single. “Another roommate commented, assuming that Coi was talking about Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, and wrote,” I bet that for Travis and her. “

If you remember, Kylie was trending on Twitter today after news broke online. Kylie rarely addresses rumors, but Sister said she has time today. She hopped on Twitter just hours later to clear the hours and denied that she had an open relationship with Travis.

Coi said “AHT AHT” to anyone who thought she was going to get Kylie. She tweeted, “And there’s one thing you won’t come for Kylie. B ** h I love Kylie. “

School strike 4 Climate: Thousands of young Australians are urgently calling for action against climate change

Posted at 4:23 pm yesterday, updated 6 hours ago

Thousands of students and their supporters left classrooms and workplaces to attend School Strike 4 Climate events across the country and became part of a global youth movement advocating urgent action against climate change.

Important points:

  • Thousands of students and supporters attended events in major Australian cities
  • They called on the federal government to do more to ensure a future for renewable energies
  • Some said because they were too young to vote it was the only way to get their voices heard

Participants made their way to large rallies in the business districts of every Australian capital on Friday. Events were also planned in dozens of rural and regional areas from Alice Springs to Atherton.

The organizers call on the federal government to turn its back on emission-intensive energy sources, including through:

  • Solutions led by Aboriginal and islanders of Torres Strait that guarantee land rights
  • Funding the creation of secure jobs that accelerate solutions to the climate crisis
  • Financing projects that will convert the economy to 100 percent renewable energies by 2030

All events took place in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic and, according to the organizers, were organized with the involvement of the relevant state and territorial health authorities.

A central theme for many in attendance was the federal government’s recent announcement that it would be spending $ 600 million on a new gas-fired power plant.

The Australian government is being forced to fund a new gas-fired power plant with taxpayers’ money as shippable energy is no longer a safe investment in Australia due to its own market distortion rules and the hostility of opposition to fossil fuels. Energy companies seem to have given up on the idea that they are in any way responsible for Australia’s grid stability. A rational position in the face of all of their shippable energy sources is bled to death by anyone who can convince a politician to give them a grant to build renewable energy.

Imagine if the kids did something constructive with their time instead of marching and whining, like taking a trip into the desert and participating in some land restoration projects. But I think a few hours from their game consoles is all the poor darlings can stand, and digging Australia’s poor quality desert soil and dealing with flies, snakes and other pests is a terribly uncomfortable job.
