Astronomy Jargon 101: Customary Candles

In this series, we explore the weird and wonderful world of astronomy jargon! If only there was one way to measure the distance to today’s topic: standard candles!

Measuring distances to objects in space is really, really difficult. One technique is the use of parallax, the observed wobble in star positions over the course of a year. This technique is fantastic as long as the star isn’t too far away. At a certain distance, your telescope just cannot measure the shake accurately and you are out of luck.

The key is to find something called a standard candle. If you could look out at a distant object and know exactly how bright it is (in other words, you could know its luminosity) then you could compare that measurement to the brightness it appears to be. Then, with a little trigonometry, you can calculate a distance.

For example, if you knew for sure that the flashlight I had was exactly the same as the flashlight you had, then when I was far away you could measure the brightness of my flashlight compared to the brightness of your flashlight and figure from my distance.

Now all we need is a couple of flashlights.

Fortunately, nature has given us some. The first known were the Cepheids, a kind of star with different brightness. The astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt discovered that the longer a Cepheid takes to cycle, the brighter it is. Then, by calibrating some Cepheid with parallax, you can find any Cepheid you want and see how far away it is.

In 1998, two teams of astronomers discovered dark energy – the inexplicable accelerated expansion of the universe – by looking at another standard candle: type 1a supernovae. These types of supernovae all go off roughly the same, so it is possible to calculate their true magnitude.

Today astronomers use a variety of standard candles, from mira variables to giant red twig stars. But regardless of the method, the underlying technique is the same: know the brightness, know the distance.

Polar Bear Habitat Replace Mid-August – Watts Up With That?

From polar bear science

Oddly enough, the Arctic melting season has stalled after light winter ice cover on Canada’s east coast and a slightly earlier break in sea ice in Hudson Bay. That’s not my opinion, it’s the observation made by the sea ice experts at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC):

The loss of sea ice in the first half of August has stalled, although the ice in the Beaufort Sea is finally weakening. The North Sea Route appears to be closed in 2021, although it has been open every summer since 2008.

Overall, the ice cover is well above the value of 2012 (the lowest September extent since 1979) and for many years since:

Russia and the North Sea Route

No getting through this ice, shown below on August 19, 2021, close-up (NSIDC MASIE):

Chukchi Sea (Western Arctic) in detail

Wrangel Island is still half covered in ice, as is most of the Chukotka coast. Too much ice for walrus to haul on Russian beaches, and not a word from them on land in Alaska either (although they were expected last month, of course).

Canada and Alaska

There is still a lot of ice in the western part, Kane Basin (between Ellesmere Island and northwest Greenland) and in the Foxe Basin, where the polar bear attack took place 10 days ago:

As the graphics above and below show, all routes through the North American Northwest Passage are also closed:

Beaufortsee in detail

The sea ice in the Beaufort Sea has not been that big since 2005:

Barents Sea and Svalbard

As can be seen from the following graph, the ice around Svalbard has only fallen below normal levels in the last few days. Although ice stands were very low last summer and in some places during winter, data collected on polar bears in the area this spring shows that they are still doing fine.

PS. Oddly enough, the town of Churchill has not released any more polar bear problem reports since July 12th, although they are usually released every week between the dissolution and the freezing in Western Hudson Bay. No idea why. The first two are included in this post.

Journey searches for Germany to Singapore’s vaccine itinerary

A Singapore Airlines aircraft is parked next to Scoots passenger aircraft on the tarmac of the Changi International Airport terminal in Singapore on March 15, 2021.

Interest in traveling between Singapore and Germany skyrocketed after the announcement of a so-called vaccinated itinerary between the two countries, which means vaccinated travelers can skip the quarantine.

Popular online travel booking site Expedia said that Friday afternoon searches for trips from Singapore to destinations in Germany increased almost ten times the average for the past seven days.

There is also great interest in traveling from Germany to Singapore, it said. “While Singapore was never among the top 10 travel destinations for German travelers, it was interesting to see that interest in traveling from Frankfurt and Munich to Singapore has increased by 70% in the past 24 hours,” said Lavinia Rajaram, APAC -Communication manager at Expedia, in a Friday statement.

“With the launch of the Vaccinated Itinerary Program, it will certainly bode well for those who are already vaccinated and have the desire to travel, and will give the travel industry a welcome boost,” added Rajaram.

Singapore’s vaccinated travel route with Germany was announced on Thursday by the city-state, which extended the initiative to Brunei as well.

Applications for quarantine-free travel to Singapore from Germany or Brunei will be open from September, but are subject to certain conditions. Fully vaccinated people traveling to Singapore are required to take four Covid tests – one two days before departure, one on arrival, one on the third day, and another on the seventh day.

Further conditions for traveling to Singapore from Germany or Brunei are:

  • Travel on designated non-stop flights for the vaccinated itinerary (VTL);
  • Stay in Germany or Brunei for 21 consecutive days before the flight;
  • Download a contact tracking app in Singapore.

On ticket prices, Expedia’s Rajaram added that airlines offering flights under the program have announced “competitive prices”.

Still, Rajaram said, “It is too early to say if prices will rise in the next few days – but we can expect demand to grow closer to Christmas time.”

The search queries for trips from Hong Kong and Macau are also increasing

Singapore had also announced that travelers from Hong Kong and Macau can now apply for a flight pass to travel to Singapore regardless of their vaccination status.

They don’t have to be in quarantine either, they have to take a Covid test upon arrival in Singapore and self-isolate until they get a negative test result, Singapore authorities said.

Search queries for trips to Singapore from the two Chinese territories also increased after the announcement – by almost 450%, according to Expedia.

“This comes as no surprise to us as travelers in Hong Kong (HK) have been eagerly hoping for this first vacation trip. Singapore is still a top destination for Hong Kong travelers in the second half of the year, ”said Expedia.

NFL preseason week 2 updates and schedule

11:08 p.m. ET

  • NFL nationESPN

We’re in the middle of the second full week of preseason football. With three weeks left before the regular season opener, you can count on more starters and names you know this week.

Things started Thursday with the New England Patriots rolling past the hosts Philadelphia Eagles, a game that Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was scratched late due to illness.

On Friday, the meeting between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Arizona Cardinals was a college reunion with the Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, his college coach at Texas Tech, Kliff Kingsbury, taking on his college trainer. But neither Mahomes nor Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray showed much in a quarter of the work, and Mahomes was intercepted on his final pass.

Most of the action will take place on Saturday, with 10 games planned. The day begins with an afternoon showdown between the Buffalo Bills and the Chicago Bears, followed by the New York Jets against the Green Bay Packers. We could see Jets rookie QB Zach Wilson making fanboys of Packers legend Aaron Rodgers in real time. The night panel shows a Texas fight between the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys in Jerry World and the Las Vegas Raiders (arguably the most popular team in Los Angeles) battling the Los Angeles Rams (who want that title).

The Odell Beckham Jr. Bowl between the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns is one of two competitions on Sunday, while Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars attend the New Orleans Saints on Monday.

NFL preseason week 2 schedule

Games on Friday

play

0:23

Patrick Mahomes scrambles and throws an interception in the end zone against the Cardinals.

Outstanding performer: Chiefs Receiver Bryon Pringle: 4 receptions, 63 yards

Chris Jones continues to look like he’s ready for a big season. Jones had a sack against the Cardinals, which gave him two in about three quarters of the preseason game, and also deflected a pass and forced a fumble. The Chiefs don’t need to worry about his position change on the defensive, especially since his substitute on the defensive tackle, Jarran Reed, has been sacked. – Adam Teicher

Next game: vs. Vikings (8 p.m. ET, Aug 27)

It’s easy to say, “It’s preseason, it doesn’t count,” but there were a few specific Friday night games that might be of concern to the Cardinals. In the first half, there was some sort of misunderstanding between quarterback Kyler Murray and wide receiver Rondale Moore on one game and AJ Green on another. Maybe it was just a kink that needs to be ironed out, but experiencing mistakes like this so close to the regular season is nothing to be sniffed at. The Cardinals first team offense fought. Murray only made 1 of 4 passes for 2 yards and had a run for 8 yards. It might not matter, but it wasn’t nice. – Josh Weinfuss

Next game: at Saints (8 p.m. ET, Aug. 28)

Outstanding performer: Washington RB Jaret Patterson: 16 carries, 71 yards, TD

Bengal’s rookie wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase will book the last 72 hours as a learning experience. Bengal cornerback Chidobe Awuzie won the fifth overall win in 2021 during Wednesday’s practice session. Chase dropped three goals on Friday night against Washington – and all came in third level. Chase struggled with drops during training camp. In his 2019 breakout season at LSU, however, according to ESPN Stats & Information Research, he only had six drops to just 124 goals. Chase’s struggles could be due to getting back into football rhythm after leaving 2020 or just a tough few days. In any event, Chase will attempt to correct this before the start of the regular season. – Ben baby

Next game: vs. Dolphins (4 p.m. ET, Aug 29)

Washington’s offense should be better this season but it wasn’t consistent against the Bengals. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 96 yards but only completed 7 of 13 passes. The passing game lacked rhythm, although it made a nice throw for Dyami Brown for 29 yards. The running game disagreed with Antonio Gibson; He has a big back but is still learning to run with all his might to be more effective in short distance situations. The back one that caught the eye: the undrafted rookie Jaret Patterson. He got some work with starters and also gave a kickoff back for 37 yards. If Washington keeps four running backs, he has to show that he can help in special teams. But he continues to show that he can run with patience and a little power and catch the ball well from the backcourt. Maybe they found a gem. – John Keim

Next game: at Ravens (6 p.m. ET, Aug 28)

Game on Thursday

play

0:26

Cam Newton finds Jakobi Meyers for a 28-yard touchdown towards the end of the first quarter.

Outstanding performer: Patriots QB Cam Newton: 8-of-9 pass for 103 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT

Cam Newton made his most critical statement yet that he would not quit the starting quarterback job and finish 8-of-9 for 103 yards with a touchdown and no intercepts over three drives. Newton looked as comfortable as a Patriot, albeit against the Eagles’ second line of defense. This reflects a QB and WR operating with the highest efficiency from the standpoint of pre-snap communication. Meanwhile, Mac Jones had some notable heights in relief with his first drive covering 91 yards in 17 games and chewing 9:04 a.m. Jones finished 13 of 19 for 146 yards over four drives. – Mike Reiss

Next game: at Giants (6 p.m. ET, Aug 29)

Rookie receiver DeVonta Smith made his preseason debut, finishing with two catches for 19 yards on four discs in one half of the job. Much more important than the statistics was the fact that Smith was moving well and didn’t seem to be held up by the left MCL sprain that kept him off training for two weeks. On his second catch of the evening, he started inside, hit the brakes, and cut back to beat cornerback Michael Jackson for a 10-yard reception that showed shades of his Heisman Trophy-winning form. It took some time to clear the rust as Smith’s night started with a few drops on two imperfect passes from Joe Flacco (who started because of a sick Jalen Hurts), but Smith smoothed out as the game progressed and jumped up fairly consistently. All in all, it was a successful warm-up for the regular season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on September 12th. – Tim McManus

Next game: at Jets (7:30 a.m. ET, Aug 27)

Saturday’s games

Buffalo at Chicago, 1 p.m. ET, NFL Network

New York Giants at Green Bay, 4:25 p.m. ET, NFL Network

Atlanta in Miami, 7 p.m. ET

Baltimore at Carolina, 7 p.m. ET

Detroit at Pittsburgh, 7:30 p.m. ET, NFL Network

Tennessee in Tampa Bay, 7:30 p.m. ET

Houston in Dallas, 8 p.m. ET

Indianapolis, Minnesota, 8 p.m. ET

Las Vegas at the Los Angeles Rams, 10 p.m. ET, NFL Network

Denver in Seattle, 10 p.m. ET

Games on Sunday

New York Giants in Cleveland, 1 p.m. ET, NFL Network

San Francisco at the Los Angeles Chargers, 7:30 p.m. ET, NFL Network

Game on monday

Jacksonville, New Orleans, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

Astronomy Jargon 101: R-Course of – Universe Immediately

In this series, we explore the weird and wonderful world of astronomy jargon! You will quickly see what we are talking about this week: r-process!

How do you make heavy elements? Some can be forged deep inside a star, where the intense pressures and temperatures are sufficient to merge elements. At that moment, the sun turns hydrogen into helium. Towards the end of its lifespan, it converts helium into carbon and oxygen. Even heavier stars can forge silicon, magnesium, and iron.

Through this process, the stars of our universe have transformed the original hydrogen and helium of the Big Bang into more elements. But stars themselves are unable to fuse elements other than iron because this fusion process sucks up energy instead of releasing it.

In order to make items heavier than iron, you need a few key ingredients. First, you need lots of seeds, lots of kernels running around, ready to go heavy. Second, you need neutrons. Many of them. Third, you need a lot more energy than is strictly reasonable.

These are the ingredients behind the r-process, which stands for Rapid Neutron Capture Process. It happens in extreme environments. On earth it can happen briefly during an atomic bomb detonation. In space it happens when stars become supernovae or neutron stars collide.

What happens during the r-process is that the seed kernels are absolutely bombarded with neutrons. The neutrons hit the nuclei so quickly that they can build up into heavier elements before they naturally decay radioactively into lighter ones. Through this process, most of the periodic table can be filled in in no time. While the entire process can take about a week, the first neutron explosion is complete in seconds. After that, all radioactive elements decay into more stable isotopes.

This process takes place during Type II (core collapse) supernovae, but the majority of the heavy elements in the universe come from neutron star collisions. While not nearly as powerful as a supernova, there are a lot of neutrons involved, so all conditions are just right.

Henri is the storm we have now feared for many years – Watts Up With That?

Reposted from CFACT

By Joe Bastardi |August 20th, 2021

The situation with Henri is growing dire. I strongly believe this will be stronger than the National Hurricane Center has at landfall. Their track has come to ours and ours is likely going to shift to the west this afternoon.

Note the SSTs to the east of the Virginia Capes:

This is as warm as the Gulf Loop Current. The outflow pattern tomorrow is as textbook-perfect as it can get, with two jets ventilating it.

Keep in mind unlike other storms in this region, Henri is coming into this area to intensify. Most storms that hit New England are coming out ot their area of highest intensity. Consequently, my call on intensity is down to 960 mb or lower at its peak late tomorrow afternoon or night, and a hit at 980 mb or lower. The water is quite warm relative average, even to the coast:

Low-level inflow and great upper-level support until landfall mean the weakening may be slower and only relative to how strong it gets in the first place.

Note the SSTs when Bob hit in 1991:

It was coming out of its area of maximum outflow support., not into it, and SSTs were much cooler. This current situation is the opposite:

As per our morning discussion, this will join the who’s who of the greatest storms in this area and for some will become the new benchmark. A shift to the west in my track (and I don’t like to do that since we have been stronger and farther to the west all along), is becoming more likely.

This storm is something my dad would talk to me about for years when I was young, the shortcut storm that hit the northeast moving west of north, There is nothing that says this cannot happen. After all Fran, in 1996, was moving west of north all the way to western PA, this is just displaced east.   But like the Texas freeze where I was doing cartwheels trying to get the media to pick up the week before, the bread and circus of the media and politics is ignoring what may be a dominating story by Monday morning. And what’s more, the weather weaponizers will be out in full force, when the very person who exposes this stuff has been talking about this for years for one, in our preseason forecast for 2 and all this week for 3.  It’s almost like they are climate predators, they wait until after, then pounce on the unsuspecting which is almost everyone since no one is paying attention until it’s obvious. Then they turn around and come after the people who were watching it, yelling they deny climate when climate and past events is what they use to set this up from afar!

The best one can do if the mission is like the Watchman in the bible is to try to show to all who will look and listen. And understand who it is who does not want that out until it can be used for their own purpose.

Henry is weather, not climate, but the time to prepare is NOW.

Scott Gottlieb says vaccinated folks cannot ‘throw warning to the wind’

Dr. Scott Gottlieb on Friday urged fellow vaccinated Americans to be on guard about the Covid delta variant, telling CNBC its highly transmissible nature cannot be ignored even by people who have immunity protection.

“The original premise around the vaccines — that they reduce the risk of serious disease and hospitalization — is still intact,” the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner said on “Squawk Box.” “We still see in the data that the vast majority of people who are getting in trouble with Covid are people who are unvaccinated.”

However, Gottlieb, who serves on the board of Covid vaccine maker Pfizer, said the risk to vaccinated people is not zero.

“People who are vaccinated in a setting of this epidemic surge, especially if they’re in places where there’s a high prevalence of infection, need to take appropriate precautions,” he said. “You can’t just throw caution to the wind. You can still become a vehicle for spread in your community.”

The seven-day average of daily new coronavirus cases in the U.S. is 141,060, according to a CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. That’s up 14% from a week ago. Cases are increasing by more than 5% in 42 states plus Washington, D.C.

Gottlieb’s comments Friday came in response to a question about three vaccinated U.S. senators — Roger Wicker, Angus King, and John Hickenlooper — who announced a day earlier they had tested positive for Covid.

“I think there’s now a recognition that this delta is sufficiently contagious that it can pierce the protections offered by the vaccine, particularly if you were vaccinated a while ago and have declining immunity, as these senators probably did because they were vaccinated a long time ago,” said Gottlieb, who led the FDA from 2017 to 2019.

While some scientists disagree with U.S. health officials’ recent decision to authorize Covid booster shots beginning next month, Gottlieb said he believes the delta variant’s transmissibility supports the idea of delivering third doses to Americans. Noting his role on Pfizer’s board, Gottlieb said he’s studied the data that shows declining immunity protection over time.

“It happens to be the case that we vaccinated some of our most vulnerable older individuals in our society last December and January, particularly nursing homes,” Gottlieb said. “I think the prudent thing to do would be to get additional immunity in that population, especially considering the fact we’re dealing with a much more contagious variant.”

Disclosure: Scott Gottlieb is a CNBC contributor and is a member of the boards of Pfizer, genetic testing start-up Tempus, health-care tech company Aetion Inc. and biotech company Illumina. He also serves as co-chair of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ and Royal Caribbean’s “Healthy Sail Panel.”

De’arra Taylor And Ken Walker Announce Separate YouTube Channels

Today marked the end of an “arra” that many fans of YouTubers De’arra Taylor and Ken Walker weren’t ready for. The YouTube stars and once “relationship goals” announced they created starting separate channels. After a two-month hiatus, De’arra and Ken dropped a new video that surprised some of their subscribers. Over 700k people tuned into the nearly ten-minute video, which trended on YouTube at number one to hear the reasoning behind the separation.

On their DK4L channel, De’arra and Ken took viewers back down memory lane by showing videos from the past and thanked their subscribers for supporting them for nearly seven years. While saying this wasn’t “the end,” both plugged their new channels and gave viewers a rundown of what they can expect. De’arra shared she would be vlogging, showing off her cooking skills, shopping, traveling, and more. Ken advised his channel would consist of daily vlogs, awareness projects, and health and wellness. De’arra did refer to the question if she and Ken would be deleting the channel. “We have seen a lot of questions. The main question is, will we be posting on this channel? We don’t know the future,” she answered.

However she did clarify that the channel would be here to stay, so viewers can continue to watch the posted videos along with their other combined channel. As the video continued, Ken said they weren’t going to unfollow each other on Instagram and weren’t deleting any pictures. There has been a lot of speculation that De’arra and Ken are beefing, which she took the time to clarify. “No, we’re aren’t beefing, Ken & I have no hate, no bad blood, none of that we good.”

De’arra left the biggest question unanswered in viewers’ minds, which was her relationship status. She nor Ken confirmed or denied that they were still a couple. While the news had De’arra trending on Twitter, many commended her for being single. Although she didn’t confirm, she did like the tweet, “De’arra and Ken just told us they broke up without saying they broke up,” which raised a few eyebrows.
