Guardian: Can video video games change folks’s minds in regards to the local weather disaster?

Can video games change people’s minds about the climate crisis?

A new wave of game makers is trying to influence a generation of environmentally conscious gamers. Is that possible and is it enough?

Lewis Gordon Thu 26 Jan 2023 20.30 AEDT

It was scary. It made you realize how, despite all the sophistication of modern society, we still depend on water falling from the sky.” Sam Alfred, lead designer at Cape Town-based video game studio Free Lives, vividly recalls that his city almost the water would have run out. In 2018, the area around South Africa’s second-largest city suffered from declining rainfall for months. Dams have not been able to refill at the rate required by their occupants. Water was rationed. Stores closed. The situation even called for its own grim version of the Doomsday Clock: Hour by hour, the city ticked closer and closer to Day Zero, which marked the end of its fresh water supply.

Terra Nile, the video game that Alfred has been developing since 2019, is a response to these terrible events. Billed as “a city builder in reverse,” it eschews the consumption and expansion of genre classics like Civilization and SimCity to paint a picture of environmental restoration. Starting with the arid desert, it’s up to the player to overgrow a landscape using various technologies such as a toxin scrubber or a beehive. At the speed of light and with eye massages in emerald green and azure blue, the surroundings are transformed into lush vegetation. Terra Nile’s simplicity is as beautiful as its looks, offering the satisfaction of a coloring book while dishing out a perceptive critique of environmentally destructive extraction.

Whether it changes minds or behavior, there is a desire among game makers and gamers alike to address the ongoing threat of global warming. Games like ABZÛ and Alba: A Wildlife Adventure – ecological fables set in the ocean and on land – are among many that show us a way of seeing the world that doesn’t go through crosshairs.

Back in the real world, even The Conversation admitted that the 2017-18 Cape Town water crisis was caused in large part by corruption and incompetence, not climate change like most of South Africa’s other problems.

The cause of the crisis

The civil society group South African Water Caucus reveals that the national government’s reluctance to release funds to help drought relief is due to rising debt, mismanagement and corruption at the national department for water and sanitation.

This claim is supported by the Auditor General, who credits the department with “irregular and fruitless and wasteful spending” exceeding its 2016-2017 budget by R110.8 million.

The department has not allocated funds for next year’s drought relief in the Western Cape. Here, too, the state government has to foot the bill.

Had systems in the national government functioned smoothly, Cape Town’s water crisis could have been alleviated. Adequate water allocations would have made more water available to Cape Town. And with timely responses to disaster reports, the water supply infrastructure could have been up and running by now.

Cape Town teaches us that water crises are rarely a matter of rain. Understanding disasters like droughts requires looking at the problem from many different perspectives, including politics.

As for the Guardian’s advocacy of using computer games to raise concerns about the climate, it’s hard to think of anything more reprehensible.

Many computer gamers are young people. Young people are already so scared of climate change that they are self-destructing with hard drugs because they cannot face their fear.

The following is a statement from Dr. Alex Wodak, a top Australian drug rehabilitation expert, on an ice supplementation survey in NSW in

First, the threshold step is to redefine drugs as primarily a health and social problem and not primarily a law enforcement problem. Second, drug treatment needs to be expanded and improved until it reaches the same level as other health services. Third, all penalties for personal drug use and possession must be abolished.

Fourth, as much of the drug market as possible needs to be regulated, recognizing that some of the drug market is already regulated, such as B. methadone treatment, needle and syringe programs, medically supervised injection centers. Of course, it will never be possible to regulate the entire drug market. We previously regulated parts of the drug market. Edible opium was taxed and regulated in Australia until 1906 and in the United States Coca-Cola contained cocaine until 1903.

Fifth, efforts to reduce demand for strong psychoactive drugs in Australia have had limited benefit and require a new focus. Unless and Until young Australians are optimistic about their future, demand for medicines will remain strong. Young people understandably want more certainty about their future prospects, including climate, education, jobs and affordable housing. Change will be slow and gradual, like all social policy reforms.

As Herb Stein said while advising President Nixon:
Things that can’t go on forever don’t.

Drug prohibition cannot last forever and is being replaced by libertarian paternalism. Thank you.

Source: Wayback Machine

I am not a proponent of censorship of computer games, but in my opinion there is nothing commendable about measures aimed at increasing concerns about the climate. I believe games that focus on climate change could plunge even more people, particularly vulnerable young people, into a crisis from which they may not recover. The climate concern, especially among young people, has already been boosted so much that some of the kids are breaking down.

FDA proposal would permit homosexual males in monogamous relationships to donate blood

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday proposed new guidelines that would no longer require gay and bisexual men in monogamous relationships to abstain from sex before donating blood.

The FDA banned men who have sex with men from donating blood for life during the 1980s AIDS crisis. The agency eased the ban in 2015, allowing gay and bisexual men to donate blood if they hadn’t had sex in the previous year.

In response to a shortage of blood donors during the Covid pandemic, the FDA further eased restrictions in April 2020 to allow gay and bisexual men who have not had sex in the past three months to donate.

Under guidelines proposed Friday, gay and bisexual men who are in monogamous relationships should be allowed to donate blood. But people who have recently had anal sex with a new partner or partners, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, must wait three months before they can donate.

CNBC Health & Science

Read CNBC’s latest global health coverage:

“Maintaining a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products in the United States is of the utmost importance to the FDA, and this proposal for an individual risk assessment, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, will allow us to continue using the best science to do so.” ,” said FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf on Friday. The Washington Post previously reported on it.

The American Medical Association has criticized the FDA’s restrictions on donations from gay men as discriminatory.

“Controversial is the need to equally assess all potential blood donors based on their individual risk factors and without regard to their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Dr. Gerald Harmon of the AMA in January 2022.

The Human Rights Campaign, the country’s largest organization advocating for LGBTQ rights, said the FDA proposal was a step in the right direction but more needed to be done to lift restrictions.

“We urge the Biden administration to prioritize removing remaining barriers and ask the FDA to act expeditiously while maintaining the safety of the blood supply and a blood donation policy consistent with science,” HRC President Kelley Robinson said in a Explanation.

People taking oral medications to prevent HIV infection should not donate blood for three months after their last dose. People taking HIV-preventive injections are not allowed to donate blood for two years after their last injection.

These drugs, called pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP, can cause false negative results on HIV tests, according to the FDA.

Under the proposed FDA guideline, anyone who has tested positive for HIV or is taking medication to treat HIV infection would be barred from donating blood. People who have recently engaged in sex work or used illegal intravenous drugs would have to wait three months to donate.

According to the FDA, blood banks must continue to test all donations for HIV and hepatitis C and B.

dr Peter Marks, a senior FDA official, said the agency is evaluating the science to increase the number of people who are eligible to donate blood while maintaining safeguards to ensure the delivery is safe for recipients is.

“We will continue to follow the best available science to maintain an adequate blood supply and minimize the risk of infectious disease transmission, and are committed to finalizing this draft policy as soon as possible,” Marks said Friday.

Why no person desires to get within the ring with gentle heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev

January 27, 2023

  • Mark KriegelESPN

In the 29 years that Artur Beterbiev has been a boxer, he has suffered only one notable cut: a snake-shaped gash, about 3 inches long, that curled up from his forehead to his hairline.

Since there is little fatty tissue on the forehead – actually I’m not sure if Beterbiev has fatty tissue – it was impossible to close the laceration during the fight. It dripped in a steady drip, the kind you might call a plumber for. It didn’t take long for everything to be shaded in crimson: Beterbiev; his opponent, the dangerous Marcus Browne, who seems to have a knack for opening such wounds; the referee Michael Griffin; and the ring itself, which resembled a crime scene of the most gruesome kind.

What happened that night – December 17, 2021 – in the fourth round provided the kind of test no fighter can prepare for. Usually a fighter goes to the referee first. (In Beterbiev’s case, it’s worth noting that the fight could have been declared a “no contest” if it had ended before four rounds were completed.) Then, after returning to his corner, he tries to hit the coach and read the cutman. Since it’s human nature to make sure, especially at times of bleeding, cornermen usually lie: It’s not bad at all. However, with Beterbiev already covered in blood, that wasn’t really an option.

“This was a cut you couldn’t control,” says Luc-Vincent Ouellet, who was brought on duty when Beterbiev’s regular cutman Russ Anber tested positive for COVID-19.

Not that it bothered Beterbiev. “Guys cut that bad are usually looking for someone to stop the fight,” says John Scully, an assistant at the Beterbiev camp. “They come back and say, ‘Is it bad?’ or ‘How’s it looking?’ But Artur said nothing, I mean nothing, not a face.

“I’ve never seen that before.”

Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+: Artur Beterbiev vs. Anthony Yarde, 12 rounds, for Beterbiev’s WBC, WBO and IBF light heavyweight titles

He’ll probably never see it again. Beterbiev, who will defend his three light heavyweight belts against his mandatory challenger – the formidable Anthony Yarde of England – in London on Saturday, is not only unique for his strength and temperament. He is the most underrated champion in boxing. He has 18 knockouts in 18 pro fights. According to Compubox, he is boxing’s second-longest reigning world champion after Errol Spence Jr. and second-oldest after Gennadiy Golovkin. Nevertheless, these figures fall short as descriptors. By the time Golovkin was 38, like Beterbiev now, he was already in decline. No shame – it’s human nature – but Beterbiev seems to be reaching its peak.

In June, it was a second-round knockout of WBO champion Joe Smith Jr. Davor Browne. Beterbiev bled for five more rounds that night until Browne finally fell to one knee, from which he refused to get up until the referee had counted ten for sure. Aside from the blood, however, it was the typical Beterbiev win: a slow-tightening noose, a strangulation masquerading as destruction.

Beterbiev started late in the pro game. After representing Russia at two Olympics, he was recruited by Marc Ramsay, a Canadian coach who had devised an elaborate scouting system to find medalless players who would go on to win professional titles. They were all, as it turned out, light heavyweights. First Jean Pascal from Canada, then Eleider Alvarez from Colombia, now Beterbiev. Ramsay was a 16-year-old right winger looking to get in shape when he first set foot in a boxing arena. Now he was a kingmaker.

However, unlike many of boxing’s kingmakers, his ego remained of this earth. In 2016, Beterbiev asked for a former pro to be added as an assistant coach. Another coach would not have agreed. But Ramsay called “Iceman” John Scully, a former light heavyweight contender and a fixture on the US boxing scene since the 1980s. Ramsay recalled the sparring practice Scully had given Pascal and how Scully had coached Chad Dawson for his win over Bernard Hopkins.

They are an unlikely pair, Beterbiev and the Iceman. Scully lives and breathes boxing. Beterbiev, he says, “probably doesn’t know who Spence is.” Beterbiev is a circumspect, sphinx-like, a devout Muslim Chechen from Russia’s Republic of Dagestan. Scully is exuberant and American.

They started perfecting Beterbiev’s jab and then the body shots, a much-neglected part of the amateur game. For a man who wasn’t a huge boxing nerd, however, Beterbiev was totally devoted to the task. He showed an unnatural ability to concentrate. Even more unnatural, at least in Scully’s experience, were the sparring partners.

“We had people literally counting the days to go home,” says Scully. “They wanted the money, but they didn’t want to absorb that power. You ask them to describe it, they just shake their heads. And we tell them all beforehand, ‘Hey, don’t be a hero.’”

Still, it wasn’t necessarily power that she achieved; it was the pressure, the strength, combined with a frightening patience. “Sparring partners would say he makes you feel like you’re suffocating,” Scully continues. “It’s like he’s sucking all the air out of the room, but you’re still in there without oxygen.”

Beterbiev stops Browne to retain Montreal titles

Artur Beterbiev knocks out Marcus Browne, ending the fight for his WBC and IBF light heavyweight titles.

It’s just sparring, of course. But that’s how Browne went down. Blood or no blood, Browne endured until he couldn’t anymore. The same goes for Oleksandr Gvozdyk, an Olympic silver medalist for the vaunted Ukraine national team, a fighter who defeated the much-feared Adonis Stevenson to win his title. Although Gvozdyk was ahead in points at the time of the stoppage, the result somehow felt unstoppable. During the ninth round, Scully noticed Gvozdyk coming out of a clinch: “He sagged. I could see him melting. Artur came back into the corner, I told him, ‘He’s ready. It’s time.'”

Gvozdyk, a good and brave fighter, knelt three times in this tenth round.

Smith’s knockout was obviously more atypical. “Smith knocked out a lot of good guys,” says Scully, “but he was perfect for Artur. People don’t understand that. This fight was not a demolition.

clarification please

“You can’t match Artur’s strength so people think he’s just a cracker. But he really is a technician. He really took his time with this fight. He had Smith come to him. grabbing his right elbow and leading him into right uppercuts. It’s the nifty stuff that people don’t see.

However, a perfect record doesn’t make you a perfect fighter. Beterbiev, who can make himself a square target, is beatable. He was knocked down twice, in 2014 and 2018, each time early in the fight. This appears to be Yarde’s best bet: catching him hard and early. Then again, how did that work out for Smith?

“Artur cuts the ring better than any boxer today,” says Scully. “Do you remember ‘Pac-Man’ the video game? He is like that. He follows you everywhere. Then he suddenly stops and turns, say, left, because he knows where you’re going.

“Remember Pac-Man the video game? He is like that. He follows you everywhere. Then he suddenly stops and turns, say, left, because he knows where you’re going. Then you stop.” John Scully

Then he eats you.

Scully doesn’t think Yarde, who tired out in a 2019 11th-round KO loss to Sergey Kovalev, will be up for the pace. Yarde being a WBO compulsory makes perfect sense to Scully: “No one in the world wants to fight Artur.

In fact, there may be a single exception and he just so happens to be the 2022 Fighter of the Year. Dmitry Bivol, who beat Canelo Alvarez and Gilberto Ramirez, was Russia’s rising star when Beterbiev last fought for the national team. When Beterbiev beats Yarde, it’s a fight both men say they want.

“Dmitry asked for the fight,” says his manager Vadim Kornilov. “We’re just waiting to see what happens. Money is very important. But this is a big, big fight for the legacy.”

Bivol, unbeaten in 21 pro fights, isn’t the tallest or the strongest at 175 pounds. But he is by far the best boxer with a sleek, confident style. His last eight wins against some of the division’s biggest punchers have been unanimous. So that’s something to get excited about: Beterbiev and Bivol for the undisputed light heavyweight championship. It might not be the splatter film some fans secretly want. But it’s just as good a straight fight as it is in sport, with two very different types of technicians: one that typically goes the distance and one that doesn’t, each possessing a daunting patience.

Peta Murgatroyd shares her fears of being pregnant after her miscarriages

“I’ve been so focused on having a kid for the last two years that it took everything away,” she admitted. “And once I let it go and came to terms with the fact that it could actually be, it could be a kid for me, that’s where it happened.”

And yet she continued: “I don’t like to say that because it doesn’t happen to a lot of women. I was lucky and thankful for that. I would get so annoyed if people said, “Just relax. Like, ‘Shut up, okay?’”

As she nears halftime and already feeling the first slight flutter (“I haven’t felt any big kicks yet, I think I’ll be in the next few weeks”), her excitement grows with her belly. Even more so when Shai asks to play music for the baby and talk to his little brother or sister.

Thanks to the arrival of his new cousin, Maks’ little brother, he is already gaining some experience with big brothers Val Khmerkovsky and woman Jenna Johnson greeted January 10: “I’m amazed at how gentle he is with babies,” Peta marveled. “He was holding Jenna and Val’s baby the other day and he loved it. He loved holding the paci in his mouth and it was just so good.”

It is arduous sufficient to dam the sunshine from a single star to see its planets. However double stars? whoops

The discovery of exoplanets was frontier science not so long ago. But now we’ve found over 5,000 of them, and we expect to find them around almost every star. The next step is to more fully characterize these planets in hopes of finding those that might support life. Your direct mapping will be part of this effort.

But to do that, astronomers have to block out the light from the planet’s stars. This is a challenge in binary star systems.

When astronomers need to block starlight to study a nearby planet, they use a telescope attachment called a coronagraph. The Hubble Space Telescope has one, and so do many other telescopes. They are very effective.

This Hubble image shows the star AB Aurigae and the exoplanet AB Aurigae b. Hubble’s coronagraph (black circle) blocked the star’s light, making the exoplanet visible. Pagan (STScI); CC BY 4.0

Coronagraph effectiveness is well established in one star systems. But what about binary stars and multiple star systems? Binaries are common in the Milky Way, and up to 85% of the stars in the Milky Way may be in binary systems. They are also plentiful in our neighborhood. ESA’s Gaia spacecraft has found 1.3 million binary stars within 1,000 light years of Earth.

We don’t have to look far to find a multiple star system with exoplanets. Our nearest stellar neighbor, the Alpha Centauri system, is a triple star system. Alpha Centauri A and B are both bright, sun-like stars. The third star in the system, Proxima Centauri, is a small red dwarf only slightly larger than Jupiter. Proxima Centauri is so faint that Alpha Centauri effectively resembles more of a binary star. Alpha Centauri A and B are also close together, while Proxima Centauri is in a much wider orbit around the main pair.

This image shows how Alpha Centauri A and B appear as one bright star, while Proxima Centauri is a faint, distant companion.

The Alpha Centauri system is an instructive example of the challenge astronomers face when trying to image exoplanets. Alpha Centauri A and B are only about 40 astronomical units apart. The combined light from two Sun-like stars so close together can easily drown out their much fainter exoplanets. But a new technology shows promise. It’s called Multi-Star Wavefront Control (MSWC).

The challenge of blocking the light from binary stars is cross-contamination. Current coronagraphs can suppress the light from a single star, but cannot handle cross-contamination from a separate star. Eliminating the polluting light is crucial for imaging exoplanets. This is where MSWC comes in.

Multi-Star Wavefront Control is at the heart of an upcoming mission. NASA hopes to launch its Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (NGRST) in 2027. It will carry a technology demonstration coronagraph called CGI (CoronaGraphic Instrument) based on MSWC. Deformable Mirrors (DM) are a critical part of the system.

Deformable mirrors are not brand new technology. The upcoming Thirty Meter Telescope and the European Extremely Large Telescope both use deformable mirrors. They are part of the adaptive optics.

The DM system works for single stars or for double stars that overlap. But something else is needed to counteract cross-contamination from non-overlapping binaries. This is the second part of the Roman’s coronagraph and is called “Super Nyquist Wavefront Control”.

The problem in binary systems is that DMs have a limited field of view (FoV). A DM can adjust to the light of a single star, but a binary companion is outside the FoV. The Nyquist system gets around this by using hardware and software to expand the FoV. The system basically creates a grid of proxy stars for the secondary star in the binary and each proxy has a corrected DM region. This creates dark zones outside the DM’s FoV. The beauty of the system is that it can be adapted to any telescope with deformable mirrors. (A more detailed description of how it works can be found here.)

This image helps explain how the system creates dark zones outside the DM’s FoV. The DM grating diffracts an attenuated replica of star B into a sub-Nyquist region of star A. (The solar Nyquist region is the region where the deformable mirror coronagraph is effective.) The system treats the replica as another star. In this image, a coronagraph is blocking the light emanating from Star A. A side effect seen on the diagram is the replicating of A in the controllable region of B. This allows us to search for planets around A in the box labeled DZ (Dark Zone.) Photo credit: Thomas et al. 2015

Typically, adaptive optics are not required in space telescopes. They are used on ground-based telescopes to counteract the effect of the atmosphere on telescopes. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be the first space telescope to use deformable mirrors. And if things go well, a system based on the NGRST system will become part of NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO). The HWO is a combination of two previous telescope ideas: the Habitable Exoplanet Observatory (HabEx) and the Large UV/Optical/IR Verifier (LUVOIR).

But before that can happen, the instrument must be thoroughly tested. This is done at the Ames Coronagraph Experiment Laboratory and at the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) instrument on the Subaru Telescope. The team behind MWSC is also testing it at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s High Contrast Imaging Testbed (HCIT).

These images show MSWC being tested at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s High Contrast Imaging Testbed (HCIT). MSWC team members Eduardo Bendek, Ruslan Belikov, Dan Sirbu and David Marx are pictured left to right. Photo credit: NASA.

The astronomy community is aware that our search for exoplanets is hampered by starlight in binary star systems. We could miss many of them.

A 2021 paper examined the problem and concluded that not only do we not detect exoplanets lost in the glare of binary stars, but we may also not detect what everyone is hoping to find: Earth-like planets in habitable zones .

The paper is Speckle Observations of TESS Exoplanet Host Stars: Understanding the Binary Exoplanet Host Star Orbital Period Distribution. It was published in the Astronomical Journal and the lead author is Steve Howell of NASA’s Ames Research Center.

In their article, the authors point out that there is an “established binary rate of 46% among exoplanet host stars.” The team used the Gemini Observatory’s telescopes to study stars found by TESS that harbor planets. They found that it’s easy to miss spotting Earth-sized planets in binary systems. TESS relies on planets passing in front of her star to identify them by starlight bursts. But the other star’s glare is easily masked.

They examined hundreds of these TESS stars and found that 73 of them are actually binary stars, a detail that TESS missed. Is Earth 2.0 or something similar hidden somewhere around these stars? How many planets do we miss, drowned out by the light of two stars?

“Imagine – if you go outside and look at a star in the night sky, you might see a planet like Earth hidden in the star’s brilliance,” said Ruslan Belikov, project leader for MSWC. “Also, there’s a chance the star you’re looking at is a multiple star system. I can’t wait until we unravel veils of starlight to unravel the mysteries that lie upon the planets within.”

CDC urges immunocompromised to take precautions after Evusheld is pulled

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday urged people with weakened immune systems to take extra precautions to avoid Covid after the dominant omicron subvariants knocked out a key antibody treatment.

Those precautions include wearing a quality mask and social distancing when it’s not possible to avoid crowded indoor spaces, according to the CDC.

The guidance comes after the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday withdrew its approval of Evusheld, a combined antibody injection that people with weak immune systems took as an extra layer of protection to prevent Covid infection.

The FDA withdrew Evusheld because it is not active against 95% of the Omicron subvariants circulating in the US. These include the XBB subvariants, which now cause 64% of new cases, as well as the BQ family, which is responsible for 31% of reported infections.

Although most Americans have largely returned to normal life after the Covid pandemic has abated, the risk of serious illness remains higher in those with weakened immune systems because their immune response to the vaccines is not as strong.

Still, it’s important for people with weakened immune systems to stay up to date on their Covid vaccines by getting the Omicron booster because the vaccinations can reduce the risk of serious illness, according to the CDC.

If you have a weak immune system and develop Covid symptoms, the CDC says you should get tested as soon as possible and be treated with an antiviral within five to seven days.

Available antivirals include paxlovid, remdesivir, or molnupiravir, but patients should speak to their doctor to find out which treatment is best. Some people cannot take Paxlovid because it interacts with other medicines they are taking.

People with weakened immune systems include cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant patients taking medication for their transplant, people with advanced HIV infection, and those born with immunodeficiency.

About 7 million adults in the US have a disease, such as cancer, that affects their immune system, according to the CDC.

British scientists uncover technique to scale back carbon emissions from steelmaking by 90%

University of Birmingham researchers have developed an innovative method for existing blast furnaces that could reduce carbon emissions from steelmaking by almost 90%.

The iron and steel industry is one of the main emitters of greenhouse gases and is responsible for 9% of global emissions. This is due to the inherently carbon-intensive nature of steel production in blast furnaces, which are currently the most common practice.

Blast furnace steelmaking uses coke (a type of coal) to create metallic iron from ore mined – releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide. according to dr Harriet Kildahl, who developed the process together with Professor Yulong Ding, her technology aims to convert this carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide, which can be reused in the iron ore reaction.

Get your tickets for TNW Valencia in March!

The heart of technology comes to the heart of the Mediterranean

This is realized by a thermochemical cycle that carries out chemical reactions through temperature changes. In this way, the normally harmful CO2 is converted into a useful part of the reaction, forming “a near-perfect closed carbon cycle.” As a result, the emissions are drastically reduced by the required amount of coke and thus the emissions from steel production by up to 88%.

If this method were implemented in the remaining two blast furnaces in the UK, the researchers say £1.28 billion could be saved over 5 years while reducing the country’s total emissions by 2.9%.

“Current proposals to decarbonize the steel sector include phasing out existing plants and introducing electric arc furnaces powered by renewable electricity. However, an electric arc furnace plant can cost over £1 billion to build, making this switch economically unfeasible in the time remaining to meet the Paris climate agreement,” said Professor Ding. “The system we are proposing can be retrofitted into existing plants, reducing the risk of lost assets, and both the CO2 reduction and cost savings are immediately visible.”

University of Birmingham Enterprise has filed a patent application covering the system and its use in metal production. It is currently looking for partners to participate in pilot studies and bring this technology into the existing infrastructure or collaborate on further research to develop the process.

NFL playoff picks, schedule, odds

7:00 p.m. ET

  • ESPN staff

The conference championship round (schedule) for the 2022 NFL season has two great matchups. Our NFL Nation reporters deliver the biggest clues and bold predictions for every competition.

Additionally, ESPN Stats & Information provides a crucial stat and nugget for betting, and our Football Power Index (FPI) goes into the numbers with a game prediction. Matt Bowen picks a matchup to watch in both games, and Kevin Seifert tells us what to know about the official. Finally, Seth Walder and Eric Moody predict the final outcome and pick the winners for each game (see also Tips). There’s plenty here for what’s expected to be an exciting playoff football weekend.

Let’s examine the conference championships pitting Jalen Hurts against Brock Purdy and Patrick Mahomes against Joe Burrow. Who will make it to Super Bowl LVII?

Note: New for this season’s playoffs, each team is guaranteed ball possession if a game goes into overtime.

Jump to a matchup:
SF-PHI | CIN-KC

3 p.m. ET | Fox | Spread: PHI -2.5 (46)

What to look out for: This matchup offers arguably the two best defenses in the NFL. Philadelphia led the league in passing defense (179.8 yards per game) and sacks (70) during the regular season, while the Niners led in interceptions (20) and second in rush defense (79.0 yards per game). . But with Niners running back Christian McCaffrey (having a touchdown in eight straight games) and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (332.5 passing yards per game and seven touchdowns against top-10 defenses this season). There are very few holes on either roster. “This is how the NFC Championship Game should be,” said Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni. “It’s going to be fine and it’s going to be close.” – Tim McManus

Editors Favorites

Bold Prediction: The 49ers’ streak of 27 straight games without a rusher exceeding 70 yards on the ground (including playoffs) will come to an end because of hurts. The Niners have struggled with mobile quarterbacks in previous seasons but didn’t see many of them this season, which is why they ranked fifth in the NFL in yards per rush to quarterbacks (3.4). Hurts presents more of a challenge, ranking fourth among quarterbacks in rushing yards (760) and first in rushing touchdowns (13). He rushed for 82 yards and scored one goal in Week 2 of last season against San Francisco, and with the Niners aiming to slow down the deep ball passing game, he was able to offer a similar performance on the floor. – Nick Wagoner

Stats to know: San Francisco has relied heavily on the pre-snap movement to help rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, using it on 73% of his dropbacks this season, including the playoffs. Purdy excelled there, ranking fourth in QBR (80.0) and first in yards per attempt (9.2) among passers with at least 100 attempts in the regular season and postseason. But that formula is being tested by the Eagles’ pass defense, which has provided the league’s lowest QBR (33.2) and third-lowest yards per attempt (6.3) for opposing quarterbacks in games with pre-snap motion.

Bowen’s Map Key: Eagles edge rusher Haason Reddick has 17.5 sacks in his freshman season with the Eagles, including 1.5 in last week’s division round win over the Giants. With Reddick’s quick first step and his ability to bend over and cut the corner, Philadelphia can plan more one-on-ones while also wrapping him up with stunts. His 27.6 percent pass rush win rate ranked second in the NFL this season behind Dallas’ Micah Parsons. Read more on ESPN+.

Injuries: 49er | Eagle

Worth knowing about the office: Referee John Hussey’s regular-season crew threw the third fewest flags in 2022, including two for rough passing and 24 for offensive holding, both the lowest in the NFL. That’s good news for both the 49ers and Eagles, who have been called up for the second- and third-most offensive-keeping penalties in the league, respectively, during the regular season. – Seifert

Bet Nugget: Purdy is 6-1 against the spread in his career starting quarterback, all favorites. It is the fifth-longest streak by a quarterback since the 1970 merger (including playoffs). And San Francisco has played five straight playoff games, the longest active streak of any team. Continue reading.

6:30 p.m. ET | CBS | Spread: KC -1.5 (47)

What to look out for: During the regular season, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the NFL in QBR (73.0) in throws from the pocket. And that’s where he’ll likely have to do most of his work against the Bengals, considering he sustained a serious ankle sprain in the Divisional round and his performance against the Bengals in Week 13. In that final matchup between them Teams, Mahomes had one of his best QBR outs (79.6) from Inside the Pocket and one of his worst QBR shows (14.0) from Outside the Pocket. The Bengals are on a 10-game winning streak and both teams are 11-0 when they scored the first goal of the season. – Adam Teicher

Bold Prediction: The Bengals will have more touchdowns in the red zone than the Chiefs. The Bengals ranked fifth in red zone efficiency on offense and ninth on defense during the regular season. While the Kansas City offense scored many touchdowns from within the 20-yard line (2nd), their red-zone defense during the regular season was one of the worst in the league (31st). The team that can finish drives with touchdowns has a chance to win the Lamar Hunt Trophy and advance to the Super Bowl. – Ben baby

Stats to know: Any defense could have their hands full trying to curb the fast passing game. Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow (19) and Mahomes (18) rank first and second, respectively, in touchdown passes on throws under 2.5 seconds, including the playoffs. The Chiefs’ after-the-catch ability also stands out, especially on Mahomes’ fast throws. Kansas City has generated more yards from catches than any other team this season (2,908) and has the third-highest average per catch of any offense (6.3). Overall, yards after catch accounted for 53% of the Chiefs’ yards, the second-highest rate in the league. But the Cincinnati defense ranks sixth when it comes to limiting production after catches, keeping pass catchers at just 4.7 yards after catches per reception.

Bowen’s Map Key: Cincinnati needs a special plan for Chiefs Travis Kelce. Cornerback Tre Flowers is your typical dime-look tight-end matchup defender, but he’s working his way through a hamstring injury. We could see safeties Dax Hill or Vonn Bell in man coverage, but defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo could also have a defender jam and redirect Kelce into zone looks at the line of scrimmage and then sink in deep. Injuries: Bengal | bosses

Worth knowing about the office: Referee Ron Torbert’s side in the regular season averaged 12 flags per game, the fifth fewest in the league. It threw 33 flags for defensive pass interference, illegal contact and defensive holding, the NFL’s third-lowest total. This should be noticeable to respective defenses when trying to slow down Mahomes and Burrow. – Seifert

Bet Nugget: Kansas City is 7-11 against the spread this season, and those 11 ATS losses are the highest by any team to enter the Conference Championship round in the Super Bowl era. The Chiefs were also 2-11 against the spread in AFC games this season and 0-4 ATS with more than six days off. Cincinnati, on the other hand, is 21-5 against the spread in its last 26 games, including playoffs, and its 13-5 ATS record this season was the second-best in the NFL. Continue reading.

British sports activities star refuses to fly to Australia over local weather considerations

Essay by Eric Worrall

Is Australia’s increasing shunning by climate activists a blessing or a curse?

The British star teenager does not fly to Australia because of climate problems

from Rob Harris
Jan 26, 2023 – 8:27 am

16-year-old runner Innes FitzGerald is a rising star in British athletics. He set a national U17 record in the 3000m and finished fourth in the 4000m against athletes three years his senior at the U20 European Cross Country Championships in Turin last month.

The teenager, dubbed “the Greta Thunberg of sport” by the British press, wrote to the sporting director this week that she would not be available for selection because she could not in good conscience make the journey to the Championships in Bathurst, NSW. in February.

“To have the opportunity to represent Britain in Australia is a privilege,” she wrote. “When I started running, the prospect of competing in the World Cross Country Championships was just a dream. However, the reality of the trip fills me with deep concern.

“I was just nine years old when the COP21 Paris climate agreement was signed. Now, eight years later, global emissions are steadily increasing, putting us on the path to climate catastrophe.”

Despite the lack of in-person visits from leading climate influencers, their message still resonates. We have our own homemade batch of wannabe Gretas.

“Australia’s Greta Thunberg” boosts climate protection activism

SYDNEY, June 1 (Reuters) – Leading thousands of protest marchers through central Sydney and joining a landmark class action lawsuit are not usual activities for most 14-year-olds.

But Australian student Izzy Raj-Seppings has abandoned more frivolous extracurricular activities to increase pressure on the country’s leadership in the fight against climate change.

All in all, I think isolation is damaging to Australia’s political health.

There was a time when Australia’s isolation helped mute contact with the 20th-century madness that afflicted much of the northern hemisphere. Sure we had native communists and fascists and our contribution to WWI and WWII had a significant impact on Australia, many Australian heroes lost their lives fighting Japan and Germany. My great-uncle once used some very Australian slang phrases when speaking to the nurses on an Allied medical ship – they had not tended his wounds because they thought he was German. The Australian city of Darwin in the far north was bombed by Japan during World War II.

But the most exciting thing that happened to my family during the wars and upheavals of the 20th century, apart from those who served, was when a light aircraft appeared to come too close to an American warship docked in Melbourne. My grandfather often told me how he dragged my grandmother and the children into their bomb shelter when pieces of flak rained down over Melbourne, blasting holes through people’s roofs.

Those days of isolation and relative safety are long gone. Today, for better or for worse, the internet is inviting global influencers and all the world’s issues into homes and schools everywhere.

With internet access, does it make a difference if foreign climate fanatics come to Australia in person to spread their poison?

I think the lack of face-to-face contact probably makes things worse. If Australia’s Greens could see their climate heroes up close, they would have a better chance of realizing that they don’t walk on water, that they are people with human foibles.

I believe Australians’ obsession with climate activism is likely to be compounded because our native Gretas and Innes FitzGeralds seek to live up to mythical ideals rather than interacting with flawed human leaders they have met personally.

Investigation of a former policewoman revealed perversions of all kinds running around the department

Meanwhile, Hall is likely still reeling after an internal investigation revealed she performed oral sex on co-workers and was involved in multiple affairs.

The scandal led to Hall’s firing and the firing of Sgt. Lewis Powell, Officer Juan Lugo, Sgt. Ty McGowan and Detective Seneca Shields – all of whom were reported to have had sexual relations with her.

Investigators also learned that after La Vergne received a tip from Mayor Jason Cole that Hall and the other officers involved said she was sleeping with several other officers.
