CHICAGO — The White Sox said four fans were injured in a hit-and-run collision outside Guaranteed Rate Field before the team’s game Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers.

The pedestrians were injured shortly after 6:20 p.m. local time, the Chicago police and fire department said.

One of the pedestrians restrained the car as it fled the scene before the vehicle was pulled over by an ambulance on the nearby Dan Ryan Expressway, officials said. The person clinging to the car and one of the three people outside the stadium were in critical condition. The other two pedestrians were in serious condition, officials said.

According to the White Sox, the injured were treated at the scene and transported to nearby hospitals.

In addition, the driver of the vehicle and three other occupants were hospitalized with various injuries. Illinois State Police and Chicago Police arrested the suspect a few blocks from the scene of the hit-and-run.

All four occupants of the vehicle were in custody at the hospital, according to Fred Melan, the deputy chief of the Chicago Police Department.

“Our condolences go out to the four fans injured tonight, their families and friends, and the fans who witnessed the incident while en route to a baseball game,” the team said. “The Chicago White Sox organization thanks the Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Fire Department, the Illinois State Police and others, including the fans, who responded to the incident and provided immediate care to the victims.”

Ozempic and Wegovy are falsifying the subject material of the lawsuit in opposition to Novo Nordisk

Novo Nordisk sued five medical spas and wellness clinics on Tuesday for allegedly selling cheaper, unauthorized versions of the company’s weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy.

The Danish drugmaker has filed the lawsuits in federal courts in New York, Texas, Florida and Tennessee, according to complaints received by CNBC.

The lawsuits accused the spas and clinics of marketing and selling “compound” drug products that allegedly contain semaglutide, the active ingredient in both Ozempic and Wegovy. Compound drugs are custom-made versions of a treatment that are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Novo Nordisk is the sole patent holder of Semaglutide and does not sell this ingredient to outside companies. It’s unclear what the spas and clinics are actually selling to consumers.

Novo Nordisk petitioned the courts to stop the sale of the unapproved drugs and to award an unspecified amount of damages.

“These unlawful marketing and sales practices, including the use of Novo Nordisk trademarks in connection with these practices, have created a high risk of consumer confusion and deception, as well as potential safety concerns,” the company wrote in a press release on Tuesday.

Spas and clinics named in the lawsuits include Pro Health Investments, Champion Health & Wellness Clinics and Flawless Image Medical Aesthetics.

It also includes Effinger Health, trading as Nuvida Rx Weight Loss, and Ekzotika Corp., trading as Cosmetic Laser Professionals Med Spa. The latter clinic offers a $30 Groupon for a week-long “Semaglutide Weight Management Program.”

The spas and clinics did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The lawsuits come amid a shortage of Wegovy and Ozempic that has led to a boom in compound alternatives that claim to be popular injectables.

The FDA last month warned of the safety risks of unauthorized versions of Ozempic and Wegovy after reports of adverse health reactions to compound versions of the drugs surfaced.

Several states have also threatened legal action against pharmacies that manufacture or distribute unapproved variants of Novo Nordisk’s weight loss supplements.

Numerous bureaucratic agencies are merely doing their jobs to enforce regulations to keep the disadvantaged from emissions, at the expense of the other 40 million Californians.

I just got back from a two-hour lunch with one of the staff who serves on working groups and committees for the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), and he shared his frustrations at work with me with these agencies.

The frustration stems from the devastating impact that an enormously complex system of rules and regulations involving federal, state, and local government agencies is having on individual companies and entire industries in California and the rest of the United States.

No one can argue that some level of regulation of business practices is necessary to protect employees, the public and the environment from the adverse effects of their business activities. But over time, federal, state, and local regulations have not only increased in number, complexity, and cost, but they have also become so overwhelmingly onerous that it has become economically impossible to ship certain products anywhere other than outside the United States to create states.

Ironically, this outsourcing of our once-proud domestic manufacturing capabilities has strengthened the economies of our allies and our enemies alike.

Here in California, for example, bureaucratic agencies like CARB and SCAQMD will follow federal law and enact even more Californian laws in the form of additional rules and regulations, meaning they will do whatever they can to eliminate all emissions from the oil industry Oil production and manufacturing, i.e. refineries .

While the bureaucracies in CARB, SCAQMD, and other aviation districts feel safe developing and enforcing an endless barrage of regulations, none of them have, and don’t worry, a substitute for the fossil fuels they are actively ridding the state of about the unintended consequences for ALL of humanity as they slowly oust the oil industry from California and impose restrictions on the supply chain of products that form the basis of our economy.

Without a substitute for the fossil fuels California is trying to rid the state of, manipulation of the crude oil supply chain is causing supply shortages and rising prices for thousands of products that serve the NEEDS of the entire medical industries, military, airport, electronics, communications , merchant ships, container ships and cruise ships, as well as asphalt for roads and fertilizers to feed the world. Product shortages fuel (no pun intended) inflation by causing serious damage to energy and resource infrastructure.

The law of supply and demand guarantees continued inflation and shortages as fewer refineries are available to process crude oil into derivatives that make up more than 6,000 products for society, and to produce the fuel for 50,000 jets, people and transport products. and more than 50,000 merchant ships for global trade flows and the military and space programs.

In recent years, California has closed two refineries (Phillips 66 in Rodeo and Marathon in Martinez), both in Northern California, that once produced many of the fuels and oil derivatives that have gone on to make thousands of products for mankind, and which now only… the production concentrate renewable diesel fuel.

Today, Bay Area AQMD (BAAQMD) in Northern California is targeting the Chevron Richmond and PBF Martinez (the old Shell site) refineries. If the courts uphold the recent BAAQMD Rule 6-5 for further reductions in particulate emissions, both the Chevron Richmond refinery and the PBF Martinez refinery have said they will close before spending a billion dollars at each location spend on retrofitting their refineries to meet further particle emission reductions to 2.5 microns or less.

With two more California refineries potentially lost in the coming years, Northern California’s gasoline and kerosene needs will be imported from China and India to supply military bases and the major international airports in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Sacramento. as well as many oil derivatives that were closed at California refineries are no longer manufactured.

As the folks at CARB, SCAQMD and the other Air Districts continue to do their jobs under the regulations in their hands, they are just tinkering with the emission reductions needed to meet our emissions targets and reducing fossil fuels from the supply chain while increasing demand for fossil fuel derivatives and fuels continues to increase worldwide.

Because emissions from manufacturing processes and the production and use of fossil fuels know no community or international boundaries, those living in underserved communities or developing countries will see little or no benefit from this vast body of government regulation.

While wind turbines and solar panels are seen as a promising source of renewable electricity for the fossil fuel transition, it is important to recognize their limitations. Two of the main disadvantages are their inability to continuously generate electricity and, most importantly, their inability to manufacture goods to meet the demand for products for the world’s growing population.

Because California is the fourth largest economy in the world, California may have gotten itself into a emissions reduction death spiral. The few in California’s disadvantaged communities will benefit from a reduction in emissions in their backyards, while the state’s other 40 million residents and others around the world bear the costs associated with the supply chain impact of the reductions in products and fuels that are now made from oil are helping the 8 billion people on this planet.

Crystals, nozzles and magnets – how can cooling be made extra environmentally pleasant?

In a world plagued by climate change, refrigeration is anything but a luxury. It saves lives, keeps food fresh and provides convenience at home or in the office. Ten new air conditioners will be sold every second by 2050 according to the International Energy Agency.

But all these machines, running for hours, consume tons of electricity. In addition, these devices usually contain refrigerant gases, which are many times more harmful than CO2 in terms of global warming potential. the gases gradually phase outeven after throwing away old air conditioners or refrigerators.

Ironically, cooling to survive the climate crisis could actually make the problem much worse. Because of this, there are numerous startups in Europe and around the world exploring new technologies that could make refrigeration significantly more efficient than it is today. And they have unusual ideas.

No liquids, no leaks

In a Cambridge lab, Xavier Moya, co-founder of Barocal, has a prototype of a machine that applies pressure to plastic crystals – lattices of organic molecules. This creates a strong cooling effect that lowers temperatures by 20 °C or 30 °C, for example.

“We don’t use gas, so it won’t leak,” says Moya. Barocal currently employs six people and has raised £1.5m in funding.

The technology is based on the fact that the molecules in the solid refrigerant rotate naturally, but come to a standstill under pressure. “When you remove the pressure, the molecules want to spin again and have to absorb energy – so they cool down,” says Moya.

He adds that the process is somewhat similar to what happens in liquid crystal displays. Such displays contain molecules that change their orientation when an electric field is appliedso you can see numbers on your calculator screen, for example.

Barocal’s solid refrigerant could be used in air conditioners or refrigerators on both a residential and commercial scale, says Moya. He claims that the system will be extremely efficient. In cooling and heating systems, one kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity is often used to generate several kilowatt hours of thermal energy – the so-called coefficient of performance (COP). With modern heat pumps, for example, you can achieve a COP of 3 at home, which means that for every kWh of electricity consumed, 3 kWh of heat are produced.

“We’re expecting efficiencies that are double or greater,” says Moya, adding that his company is years away from releasing a commercial product.

Another startup that wants to do without refrigerants is Dynamic Air Cooling in Poland. The company employs 13 people and has raised EUR 3.5 million in funding, of which EUR 2.3 million is in the form of grants.

“Mini Tornado”

Co-founder and CEO Pavel Panasyuk says his team came up with the idea more or less by accident while experimenting with the same technology used in jet engines.

“We created a process that is very similar to a mini tornado,” he says. It’s the twisting and twisting of the air that creates a cooling effect, as it converts the air’s thermal energy into kinetic energy instead, he explains. The system can reliably lower temperatures by around 45°C, and in experiments it has worked with starting points between 0°C and around 35°C, Panasyuk adds.

A thorny issue is that there is currently no definitive method for determining a specific exit temperature. So the team is working on a control unit to make this possible. “There is a solution,” Panasyuk suggests, adding that the system should achieve a COP of around 4.

Once all the technical challenges are overcome, he hopes Dynamic Air Cooling will have a commercial product ready in a year. The Company focuses on industrial refrigeration for food storage and transportation.

Magnotherm in Germany is also striving to make refrigerators more environmentally friendly, but with a completely different technology. Timur Sirman, co-founder and CEO, explains that his startup’s device is based on rotating magnets. Imagine two of them, like burger buns, above and below the “burger”, in this case a special iron alloy full of pores through which water can be pumped. The magnetic field generated by the rotating magnets cools the metal alloy and thus the water flowing over it.

The pursuit of efficiency

The company, which employs 32 people and has raised €6.3 million so far, already has a small commercial product – a refrigerator, which it rents out to event organizers. The fridge, named Polaris, holds between 100 and 200 drinks, according to Sirman, but only has a COP of 1, which isn’t very efficient. However, this can be solved by building a larger fridge, he adds.

“The cooling capacity scales linearly with the amount of material you put in,” says Sirman. With the same engines and water pump, but more porous iron alloy, the team hopes to achieve more cooling and a COP of up to 5 in 2024.

In principle, the same technology could also be used in an air conditioning system, but that is not currently the focus of Magnotherm. The hope is that their system will find application in commercial refrigerators, in a modular unit that can be removed and installed in a new refrigerator whenever the customer, say a supermarket, decides to upgrade their hardware.

It’s “fantastic” to see so much innovation in cooling, says Nicole Miranda, a researcher in the Future of Cooling Program at the Oxford Martin School, part of the University of Oxford. She emphasizes that passive cooling techniques – from textiles that keep our bodies cool to more shading in inner cities – will be just as important in the years to come as technologies that require electricity to function.

But demand for air conditioners and refrigerators will be huge around the world, she adds. It is therefore important to develop sustainable systems now that do not consume an excessive amount of energy or are made from materials that have a high CO2 footprint.

Also think of the many houses that existed across Europe Never designed to keep out excessive summer heat. And it’s not yet clear whether these countries’ power systems will be able to cope with the booming demand for cooling technology in the coming years.

“It’s an easy solution to just go to a store and get an air conditioner,” says Miranda. “It’s a big risk to the power grids in those places.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday recommended that Covid vaccine makers conduct fall single-strain vaccinations targeting the omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, the nation’s dominant strain of the virus.

“Based on the body of evidence, the FDA has advised manufacturers who will be updating their COVID-19 vaccines to develop vaccines with a monovalent XBB 1.5 composition,” the agency said in a press release, citing pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, Modern And Novavax.

Monovalent means that a vaccination is intended to protect against one variant of Covid.

XBB.1.5 is a descendant of the Omicron variant that caused a record spike in cases in the US early last year. It is also one of the most elusive strains of the immune system to date.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, XBB.1.5 accounted for almost 40% of all Covid cases in the US in early June. This proportion is slowly decreasing while the cases of the related variants XBB.1.16 and XBB.2.3 are increasing.

The FDA’s decision is consistent with recommendations by an agency advisory panel Thursday.

This panel voted unanimously that new vaccines should be monovalent and target a member of the XBB family. The consultants also generally agreed that targeting XBB.1.5 would be the most ideal option.

The FDA’s decision is also good news for Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax.

The three companies have already developed updated versions of their recordings targeting XBB.1.5. Preliminary data provided by each company on Thursday suggests these vaccines elicit strong immune responses against all XBB variants.

“Novavax is encouraged by today’s FDA announcement and the company’s XBB 1.5-COVID vaccine candidate is being manufactured at commercial scale with intent to launch for the fall immunization campaign,” a Novavax spokesperson said in an Statement to CNBC.

Pfizer said it will be able to fire a monovalent shot against XBB.1.5 by July. Moderna and Novavax have not provided specific timelines for delivery.

Astronomers see the identical supernova 4 instances due to a gravitational lens

Measuring cosmic distances is challenging, and astronomers rely on several methods and tools – collectively known as “cosmic distance ladders” – to do so. A particularly important tool is Type Ia supernovae, which occur in binary systems in which a star (a white dwarf) consumes matter from a companion (often a red giant) until it reaches the Chandrasekhar limit and collapses under its own mass. As these stars shed their outer layers in a violent explosion, they temporarily outshine anything in the background.

In a recent study, an international team of researchers led by Ariel Goobar from the Oskar Klein Center at Stockholm University discovered an unusual Type Ia supernova, SN Zwicky (SN 2022qmx). In an unusual twist, the team observed an “Einstein Cross,” an unusual phenomenon predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity, in which the presence of a gravitational lens in the foreground magnifies light from a distant object. This was a major accomplishment for the team as it involved observing two very rare astronomical events that happened to coincide.

The team consisted of several researchers from the Oskar Klein Center, the Kavli Institute for Cosmology, the Cahill Center for Astrophysics, the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC), the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies Research Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA), the Center de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon, NASA Goddard, the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and several universities. Their research paper describing their findings recently appeared in Nature Astronomy.

The first detection was made with the Zwicky Transient Facility at the Palomar Observatory in California. This facility is named after Fritz Zwicky, the astronomer who first suggested the existence of dark matter in the 1930s. A few weeks later, the team observed it using adaptive optics (AO) at the WM-Keck Observatory in Maunakea, Hawaii, and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. Based on the observed brightness, Goobar and his colleagues hypothesized that they were observing strong lensing.

These follow-up observations and images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope confirmed this theory and showed that the multi-image lensing came from a foreground galaxy that magnified the supernova by 25 times! This serendipitous discovery offers astronomers numerous opportunities, including the opportunity to study SN Zwicky in more detail and further explore the mysteries of gravitational lensing. As Goobar explained in a press release from Stockholm University:

“The discovery of SN Zwicky not only demonstrates the remarkable capabilities of modern astronomical instruments, but also represents a significant step forward in our quest to understand the fundamental forces shaping our universe.”

However, the implications go beyond these two phenomena. The study of Type Ia supernovae led astronomers to realize that the cosmos is expanding at an accelerating rate. This discovery earned the discovery team the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, which was shared between Saul Perlmutter (The Supernova Cosmology Project) and jointly between Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Reiss (The High-z Supernova Search Team). Therefore, observations by SN Zwicky could help astronomers solve the mystery of what is driving this accelerated expansion.

“The extreme magnification of SN Zwicky gives us an unprecedented opportunity to study the properties of distant Type Ia supernova explosions, which we need if we use them to study the nature of dark energy,” said Joel Johansson, postdoctoral researcher at from Stockholm University co-authored the study. In addition, it could also help astronomers to lift the veil over dark matter and provide theories about how the universe will end (e.g. big crunch, big rip, heat death, etc.).

From gelatinized marine litter to seaweed straws

A new generation of talented and sustainability-focused tech entrepreneurs are already dreaming up innovative ideas to change our daily habits and fight climate change.

For the past five years, the Battle of the Minds competition has challenged students and alumni from around the world to imagine and develop novel solutions to some of the world’s most pressing social and environmental problems. Together, country teams compete in a pitch competition for a chance to receive funding from Btomorrow Ventures and the opportunity to participate in BAT’s Global Graduate Program.

From making glue from gelatinized marine litter to making algae-based edible straws, here are some of the weird and wonderful breakthroughs that have emerged from the program so far:

Bioplastics as an alternative packaging

UK households are reported to throw away a staggering 100 billion pieces of plastic packaging every year, which is an average of 66 items per household per week. The government plans to impose a total ban on single-use plastic, including plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks, and certain types of Styrofoam cups and food containers, from October 2023.

With this in mind, UK-based team FlexSea has developed a proprietary technology that creates a bioplastic derived from algae. At the 2022 Battle of the Minds edition, they explained that this could be used to package a wide range of products without compromising their quality or competitiveness. This idea brought FlexSea the win and an investment of £50,000 to bring the solution to market.

Reusable food packaging

In 2021, Mexico City banned single-use plastic in a bid to make the city more sustainable. As citizens adjusted to the changes, Team Erre developed a reusable cup system that would allow users to take their food and drinks with them without creating single-use waste.

This solution was both environmentally friendly and encouraged regular customers to the participating cafes. This earned Team Erre second runners-up with funding of £25,000.

Edible seaweed straws

In 2021, the top spot in the Battle of the Minds went to Team Ijo from Indonesia, who developed eco-friendly, edible straws made from seaweed that still retained the look and feel of a regular straw.

In Indonesia, where 4.9 million tons of plastic waste goes uncollected or goes to open landfill, any step we can take to replace everyday items with sustainable, plastic-free alternatives will help transform the country. The winning team received £50,000 to bring the idea to life.

Use marine waste sensibly

Egypt is said to be responsible for a third of all plastic entering the Mediterranean, with the amount of marine litter expected to double by 2025.

With this in mind, Team Egypt produced a high-quality gelatin from marine waste that is used to make glue, photographic emulsions and more. With an investment of £25,000 they secured a second place finish in 2021.

Composting with cigarettes

Since October 2020, many parts of East Africa have been experiencing long periods of drought with intermittent short, heavy rains that often lead to flash floods.

To encourage plant growth in these unsettled weather conditions, Team Kenya has developed a system for recycling cigarette butts to make planters for urban farming and fertilizer for cultivation. This also brought in second place and a fund of £25,000.

Technology: Ideas that use new technologies such as AI, augmented and virtual reality to create a sustainable world

Organic: ideas for reducing CO2 in everyday life, from developing packaging alternatives to more sustainable agriculture?

Energy: ideas for innovation in renewable energy and carbon sequestration

Inclusion: Ideas to promote inclusion, such as combating unconscious bias through the use of technology
