Texas reviews what could be the first US demise from monkeypox

Texas health officials said Tuesday that a patient diagnosed with monkeypox died in what may be the nation’s first-known fatality from the virus.

The patient was an adult with a severely compromised immune system who lived in the Houston area, health officials said. The case is under investigation to determine what role monkeypox played in the individual’s death, officials said.

“Monkeypox is a serious disease, particularly for those with weakened immune systems,” said Dr. John Hellerstedt, the Texas state health commissioner. “We continue to urge people to seek treatment if they have been exposed to monkeypox or have symptoms consistent with the disease.”

Monkeypox is generally not life threatening, but people with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of severe disease. Patients typically develop lesions that often look similar to pimples or blisters and cause excruciating pain.

Eight countries have reported a total of 15 deaths from monkeypox since the global outbreak began this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Deaths were previously reported in Cuba, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Spain and the Central African Republic.

The US is battling the largest monkeypox outbreak in the world right now. More than 18,000 cases have been reported across the country, with infections now confirmed in every state as well as Puerto Rico and Washington, DC, according to CDC data.

Across the world, nearly 49,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in 99 countries, the data shows.

The virus is primarily spreading through sexual contact among gay and bisexual men, according to the CDC. About 94% of confirmed cases were associated with sex and nearly all of the patients are men who have sex with men, Demetre Daskalakis, deputy head of the White House monkeypox response team, told reporters Friday.

The outbreak in the US is disproportionately affecting Black and Hispanic men. About 30% of monkeypox patients are white, 32% are Hispanic and 33% are Black, according to CDC data. Whites make up about 59% of the US population while Hispanics and Blacks account for 19% and 13%, respectively.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky on Friday said health officials are cautiously optimistic the spread of the virus may be slowing as new cases fall in major cities.

“We’re watching this with cautious optimism, and really hopeful that many of our harm-reduction messages and our vaccines are getting out there and working,” Walensky told reporters Friday.

The US is hoping to contain the outbreak by administering vaccines, expanding testing, distributing antiviral treatments, and educating gay and bisexual men about the virus.

The federal government has distributed 1.5 million doses of the monkeypox vaccine so far. More than 3 million doses should be available to states and local jurisdictions when the latest distribution round is complete, according to Dawn O’Connell, head of the office responsible for the national stockpile at the Health and Human Services Department.

The monkeypox vaccine, called Jynneos, is administered in two doses 28 days apart. It is the only vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the US for monkeypox. Jynneos is manufactured by Bavarian Nordic, a biotech company based in Denmark.

To increase the limited supply, the FDA has authorized a different method to administer the vaccine. The vaccine is now being given through intradermal injection for adults, or between the layers of the skin. This method uses a lower volume dosage which allows health-care providers to extract five doses from each vial.

There is no data on the real-world efficacy of the vaccine in the current outbreak, according to the CDC. But health officials have emphasized that it’s crucial for people to receive two doses in order to trigger the strongest response from the immune system. Protection against the virus is likely highest two weeks after the second dose, according to the CDC.

The World Health Organization and the CDC have said people at high risk can reduce their chances of exposure to monkeypox by limiting their sexual partners until the second week after they receive the second dose of the vaccine. People can also reduce their risk of exposure by avoiding sex parties until they are vaccinated, according to the CDC.

For people who have monkeypox or whose partners have the virus, the best way to avoid infection is by avoiding sex of any kind while sick, according to the CDC. It’s particularly important to avoid touching any rash and not to share objects or materials such as towels, sex toys, fetish gear or tooth brushes.

The CDC is also encouraging people to exchange contact information with any new sexual partners.

Will a Small Change in Common Temperature Result in a Massive Change in Extremes? – Watts Up With That?

One of the major misleading claims being pushed by The Climate Team and the various climate propaganda cabals is the “general mantra that has emerged in this area of ​​climate science: “A small change in the average means a large change in extremes.” (see also here and here).” Patrick Brown at The Breakthrough Institute wrote about the issue recently in “Effective Climate Communication on Extremes Should Not Sacrifice Clarity in the Name of Persuasion”.

This mantra is supported and promoted with images such as these (there are quite a few, readers can just scan down through them, but should notice the obvious differences):

Pretty convincing, isn’t it? That’s the problem – it’s convincing without being true.

What does the temperature distribution of a real weather station look like? I picked one at pseudo-random from the National Centers for Environmental Information feature called Daily Summaries map. I choose a station near the center of the United States – Atlanta Missouri, station code: USR0000MATL. I downloaded daily summaries (including TMAX, TMIN, and TAVG ) from August 2003 through August 2022, nineteen yearsand, after removing the error codes in the TAVG column (values ​​of 600 and 599) and converting values ​​(listed in tenths of a degree C) to degree C with decimals [ 241 to 24.1°C ] had MSExcel create a histogram of the values. I use a histogram, an “approximate representation of the distribution of numerical data”, with 2 degree C bins to clearly illustrate a real world example of the distribution of temperature data.

We are interested in hottest of the hot summer days. In 19 years, they have seen only 15 days with an average above 30°C (86 °F)…less than one day a year.

Let’s compare this actual station data distribution, above, to the theoretical “normal distribution” used by the climate enthusiasts in their graphics at the beginning of the essay —

Seems right to the folks on the street, if they are not paying close attention.

This is the dw.com version, shifted to show “small increases in the average”. But what they show is moving the whole distribution a full 20 to 25% to the right. They fail to mention that this eliminates almost all very cold weather – but that wasn’t their point. The Climate Central folks use the same trick – shift the average a full 25% to the hot side.

If we are talking to them 1°C that is claimed for Global Warming in the last 100 years, this is what happens to real station data:

What changed when we added one degree centigrade to each and every daily average? The whole shifted to the right, to the warmer side. The long-term (all daily values) average also increased by 1 degree.

How many extra hot days – extreme hot days? NONE

Before the small increase in the average, there were 15 days above 30 °C (86 °F) only one of those above 33 °C (about 90 °F).

After the small increase, there would still have been only 15 days (out of 6860 days) with averages above 30 °C and still only one above 33 °C, still less than one per year.

Why? Two reasons: 1) a small change only produces a small change in linear systems like daily average temperature and 2) the shape of the real distribution looks like real temperatures in middle America and nothing like a normal distribution.

Summer days average between 21 and 29 °C (70 and 85 °F) with very few really hot days, with averages above 31 °C (88 °F), only 15 out of 6860. And, visually, Spring, Fall and some Winter days average 0 to 20 °C in about equal numbers. The cold days, 0 down to -21 °C far outnumber the hot days.

Long fat tail on the cold side, short steep tail on the hot side. Increasing the average by 2 °C doesn’t change the result very much…and the effect depends entirely on were one draws the line (in degrees) between hot summer days and extremely hot summer days. The hotter days are still only increased a single additional degree.

Looking at Tmax and Tmax+1, we see a slightly different shape, but similar overall pattern:

Very few (27 out of 6860) hot days greater than 37 °C (99 °F) for the 19 years shown (about 1.5 days per year) and when the average is increased by 1 °C, the same number of days (still about 1.5 days per year over 38 °C or 100 °F) but a highest temperature of 42 °C (107 °F), one day in 19 years.

To create a change that would be important to the people of Atlanta, Missouri, a big change in the number (or temperature) of hottest days per year, the daily average in Atlanta, Missouri would have to shift about 6 °C to the hot side; thus moving the taller column of 27 to 29 °C over into the 33 to 35 °C range and a similar shift of the Tmax hottest days into the high 90s and low 100s.

Bottomline:

Looking at the real distribution of daily temperatures at an actual weather station, over a period of 19 years, we find that a small change in the average temperature causes only a small change in hotter days.

Small changes in the climate averages do not produce large changes in temperatures.

Temperature averages are not normally distributed.

Frequent readers will know that I don’t think temperature averages are quite proper for evaluating climatic changes, even short term and local. Here I use a long-term average only to follow the conventions of CliSci and to illustrate the falsity of their meme.

A better way to look at temperatures, in my opinion, is to look at Tmax and Tmin shown on the same image. It is acceptable to show Tavg ( Tmax+Tmin/2 ) as a visual tool, although it is not particularly meaningful as it does not translate into the temperature profile of the day, which would be far more informative. Here is the year 2004 for Atlanta Missouri:

We see that Atlanta had a late December week-long thaw that year, which then dropped back into very cold temperatures -10 to -20 °C. An “Annual Average” would have missed this potentially agriculturally important fact.

Philosophically, the problem is the climate enthusiasts have pretended that the “climate average” (of any metric) is random normally distributed data. As in “A random variable with a Gaussian distribution is said to be normally distributedand is called a normally deviate.” There is no scientific reason to believe that is true, the evidence is to the contrary, and yet they use it to try and make a [false] point about changing climate.

Only in non-linear dynamics, in which systems can exhibit sensitive depending on initial conditions, do we find small changes producing large changes. For general climate temperature, the reverse is suspected, that is that temperature may exhibit uncanny long-term stability with variability that is self-similar over different time scalit.

US Open 2022 — Emma Raducanu’s rocky 12 months from champion to first-round exit

NEW YORK — When Emma Raducanu arrived in New York last year she could move around in blissful anonymity. She managed to lock herself away from the growing buzz around her by watching Formula One, listening to jazz and eating poke bowls in her hotel room during the tournament. Every night she’d walk to Times Square to get frozen yogurt.

Two weeks later, she was the US Open champion and a superstar, with her face on a billboard in Times Square.

The year since has been one of learning, battling through adversity and adjusting to life as one of the most famous sports stars on the planet. So it’s no surprise that it’s also been one of mixed performances on the court.

Her 2022 US Open campaign lasted just one round, as she fell to Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hour 42 minutes on Louis Armstrong Court. She looked exasperated at times, struggling again with blister problems on her racket hand.

“With perspective, actually as a 19-year-old, I’ve not had a bad year,” Raducanu said soon after the defeat to Cornet. “To be top hundred, if you told me that a year ago, I’d take it. But, like, I think it would be nice in a way to kind of just start over, start fresh.”

At the beginning of the year, those close to Raducanu talked about how she’d need to take a few steps back to collect the experiences she skipped on her remarkable journey last year. And that’s how it has played out.

She has had to contend with injuries and an untimely bout of COVID, to navigate new surfaces and to play with a target on her back as a Grand Slam winner.

Prior to the US Open, Raducanu’s Grand Slam win-loss ratio was 12-17, with three second-round defeats this year. But within those top-line statistics lies a story of development and valuable experience.

“[This year] has been about building her match count and developing her resilience, which the sport requires,” Iain Bates, the LTA’s head of women’s tennis, told ESPN.

Bates says the ideal “match count” for a player Raducanu’s age is between 50 and 60. To date she has only managed to tally 30 matches due to frustrating injuries. And her year was already behind schedule before it started. She contracted COVID in December, which interrupted her pre-season calendar.

“It’s not easy to just make that time up later in the year, because the tour goes from week to week to week,” Bates says.

She lost at the Sydney Open in the first round, then got through the first round of the Australian Open only to lose to Danka Kovinic in the second. Her rhythm was disrupted by a sizable blister on her racket hand — meaning she was reduced to sliced ​​forehands to try and take the pressure off the wound.

She then suffered a hip injury in February in Guadalajara, and had back problems from March until May. She also battled blisters on her foot which derailed her Billie Jean King Cup involvement in April.

Despite her lack of experience on clay, she managed to get through her first round at the French Open — her first time in the main draw at Roland Garros — as she overcame qualifier Linda Noskova. But she lost 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round.

A side strain disrupted her build up to Wimbledon, and she headed into the tournament with just seven games (not matches) on grass this year. Her participation was in doubt. She managed to get past the opening round threat of Alison Van Uytvanck — in her first ever match on Center Court — before losing to Caroline Garcia in the second.

That win over Van Uytvanck stays with Bates as a highlight of Raducanu’s year. “She went out and played a Center Court match, knowing that she was probably a little undercooked, and knowing that the minute she lost at Wimbledon this year she was in for — what’s the term? — a hard ride. The fact that she put herself out there and made herself vulnerable and won that match, well to me, that was absolutely exceptional.”

In the midst of the injuries and disappointments, she also tested out coaches.

She split from Andrew Richardson in the wake of her US Open triumph and turned to Torben Beltz back in December, but by April the two had gone separate ways. Bates took on the role on an interim basis for the clay court season. By the time Wimbledon came around she worked closely with one of her former confidants Jane O’Donoghue, but operated without an official coach. Ahead of the US Open she’s been working with Dmitry Tursunov, who has also coached Aryna Sabalenka and Anett Kontaveit.

The chopping and changing criticism received, but Raducanu responded in June, saying: “Personally, I think I know what I’m doing. I’m trusting what I’m doing and the work I’m doing. I’m still 19 and I’ve already won a Grand Slam so I can take my time and put things in place because I know my motivation isn’t any less.”

Bates had a guiding role in Raducanu’s year both as interim coach, but also in his role in the LTA. “If you have people around you that you know, you trust, you’re comfortable and confident with,” he said, “Then all of those things become stable and the norm. I’m hoping that this period of time with Dmitry goes well.”

Throughout the year, Raducanu has become one of the sport’s most sought-after commodities for eager sponsors. All of her sponsorship obligations and deals — which include Porsche, Tiffany & Co, Dior, Evian, British Airways, HSBC and Vodafone — are managed by her team at IMG with Max Eisenbud, who worked with Maria Sharapova and Li Na (whose photo Raducanu has as the lock screen on her phone).

At the start of the year they circled 18 potential days when she could fulfill those obligations, but she’s yet to hit that quota. She’s opted to keep media to a minimum as well.

Bates got insight into what Raducanu’s life is firsthand after her round of 16 exit in the Madrid Open. “That was the day Manchester City were playing Real Madrid in the semifinals of the Champions League,” Bates said. “There’s us walking through Madrid, doing the touristy things … and she is being stopped every couple of minutes by a Man City fan asking for a picture or whatever. She’s that famous that she transcends tennis. So she’s had to learn to live with that.”

Earlier this month, Raducanu managed to beat Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka in consecutive matches at the Western & Southern Open — a breakthrough in this year of setbacks.

“I actually feel like I’m heading in a good direction again,” Raducanu said in Ohio. “I think that it is relieving, because I feel like I’m swinging with the same sort of freedom as I probably had, like, more like last year. And I did really enjoy this week, like if I made an error, it was almost like a positive thing, like, good, you are kind of going for it. It paid off a lot more than it didn’t.”

But here in New York, her first practice in front of the crowds at Flushing Meadows was frustrating, blisters once again forcing her to wrap her hands. “It’s just one of those weird days where you feel a bit like nothing … I don’t know. You just feel a bit out of it. Can’t really explain myself, to be honest. I’m sure everyone in this room has probably had a day like that. Yeah, it is what it is.”

Her first-round draw against Cornet was tricky. Cornet was playing in her 63rd straight Grand Slam and came into the US Open off a year packed with impressive results – like her run to the Australian Open quarterfinal, and victory at Wimbledon over world No.1 Iga Swiatek.

But as Raducanu was asked about her prospects for the tournament, she deflected away any notion of her being under increased pressure as the reigning champion.

“I think defending a title is just something that the press makes up. I’m just taking it one match at a time. Like, every single player is very capable in this draw. I just focus on what I’m doing, my own trajectory. As I said last year, I’m just going to do things my way.”

But it was inescapable: The wall of former winners on the flagpoles alongside the Plaza at Flushing Meadows all led to that image of her holding the trophy. In a fortnight, there’ll be someone else added to that line of champions.

Her priority for next year is to put consistent weeks of tennis together to build momentum and progression. She enjoyed the six weeks leading into the US Open and the development she saw in her game. Now comes the next chapter and there’s a side of her which — although devastated with surrendering her US Open crown — will relish the challenges ahead and navigating yet more fresh territory.

“I mean, obviously [it’s] really disappointing, really sad to leave here,” Raducanu said after the defeat. “It’s probably my favorite tournament. But also, I mean, in a way [I’m] happy because it’s a clean slate. I’m going to drop down the rankings. Climb my way back up. In a way the target will be off my back slightly. Yeah, I just have another chance to claw my way back up there.”

Disney dropped a teaser on June 28 for the movie, a sequel to the Halloween classic which originally came out in 1993. In the trailer, a group of three teenage girls discuss how their plans for their upcoming 16th birthdays. While visiting a shop, the owner, played by Sam Richardsontells the trio “You know, legend has it, it’s on the 16th birthday that a witch gets her powers.”

Two of the girls appear to read a spell, causing a black flame candle to ignite. The ground beneath the girls splits as the Sanderson sisters pop up, with Winifred saying, “Lock up your children. Yes, Salem, we’re back!”

The clip ends with a man at a carnival asking the sisters if they’re looking for a stage.

Winifred playfully answers, “Always.”

Indian well being advisory for uncommon virus infecting youngsters

The emergence of a rare, new viral infection affecting young children has prompted health authorities in India to issue a health advisory after more than 100 cases were discovered in the country.

Tomato flu — so called due to the painful red blisters it produces — has so far been detected in 82 children aged under five in the state of Kerala, where the first case was detected on May 6.

An additional 26 cases have since been reported in neighboring Tamil Nadu state and Odisha in the east, where children as old as nine have been infected.

India’s health ministry has said that the virus is non-life-threatening but issued testing and prevention guidelines to all states this week, urging parents to be extra vigilant in checking their children for symptoms, the Times of India reported.

What is tomato flu?

Tomato flu is a highly contagious viral infection, which spreads via close contact particularly among young children aged under five.

Symptoms include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, dehydration, swelling of joints, body aches, and common influenza-like symptoms, as well as the eponymous tomato-like blisters.

Scientists are still trying to identify the route cause of the virus. However, they say “it is not related to SARS-CoV-2 [Covid-19],” despite displaying some similar symptoms, according to an article published last week in British medical journal The Lancet.

More likely is that the virus is an after-effect of chikungunya or dengue fever, two viral diseases transmitted by mosquitos.

Alternatively, it could be a new variant of the viral hand, foot, and mouth disease, a common infectious disease targeting mostly children aged one to five years and immunocompromised adults.

Who can catch it and how?

Children are at increased risk of exposure to tomato flu as viral infections are common in this age group and spread is likely to be through close contact.

They are also at particularly high risk through their use of napkins, touching unclean surfaces, as well as putting things directly into the mouth.

However, older adults could be put at risk if the outbreak is not controlled and transmission limited.

“Given the similarities to hand, foot, and mouth disease, if the outbreak of tomato flu in children is not controlled and prevented, transmission might lead to serious consequences by spreading in adults as well,” the Lancet article said.

Tomato flu is a self-limiting illness, meaning it tends to resolve spontaneously without treatment.

However, health officials have urged people to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the outbreak, including isolating suspected cases for five to seven days following the onset of symptoms.

“The best solution for prevention is the maintenance of proper hygiene and sanitization of the surrounding necessities and environment as well as preventing the infected child from sharing toys, clothes, food, or other items with other non-infected children,” the Lancet article said .

Now three Consecutive Days Of Heat Climate! – Watts Up With That?

Like the WHO changed the definition of a “pandemic”, the DWD has changed the definition of a “heat wave”…all to falsely generate the sense of a crisis?

Repeat a lie often enough, and in no time the masses start believing it’s true. Probably few institutions know this better than Germany’s DWD national weather service.

In order to get people to believe more in runaway warming, they have to be led to believe that “heat waves” are occurring ever more often. Even though it’s not an unusually hot summer here in Germany (yes, it’s been hot at times), all we hear on the media are news about heat wave after heat wave.

To allow this, it seems the DWD changed it’s definition of “heat wave” so that now any brief period of warm temperatures qualifies as one. What used to be defined as a period of 5 consecutive days with highs over 30°C, has been changed to a period of just three(!) consecutive days – with a high of 28°C or more. That’s all it takes, folks! It’s truly baffling that Florida could be so popular among retirees.

Here’s what the DWD writes on its website (excerpt):

A heat wave is a multi-day period of unusually high thermal stress. A heat wave is to extreme event that can damage human health, ecosystems, and infrastructure. In our latitudes, heat waves often occur in connection with persistent summertime high-pressure conditions (high-pressure area).

Internationally, there is no uniform definition of the term heat wave. Definitions are often based on a combination of percentile-based thresholds (eg 98th percentile of daily maximum values ​​and a minimum duration eg 3 days).

The following heat wave definition is used in the production of the “Climate Maps of Heat Waves” in the German Weather Service:

Individually for each grid point, a threshold value for each day – corresponding to the 98th percentile – is calculated from the daily temperature maxima of the reference period (1961-1990). To increase the database of 30 values ​​(1961-1990), the 15 days before and after the date are also used, which increases the database to 930 values ​​and also results in smoothing. If the current grid values ​​of the maximum temperature are above this climate threshold and above 28 °C for 3 consecutive days or morea heat wave is present for the marked area and period.

Heat waves pose a major risk to health, especially for the elderly and sick. For this reason, the German Weather Service uses its heat warning system to warn of days with high thermal stress on the basis of the felt temperature and a simulation model to calculate the heat stress indoors.”

It’s not clear when the DWD changed to this new, low-bar definition. The World Meteorological Organization defines a heat wave as five or more consecutive days of prolonged heat in which the daily maximum temperature is higher than the average maximum temperature by 5°C (9°F) or more.

But for the DWD, a regular warm summer weekend – when it’s just barely warm enough to swim in comfort in the daytime – now qualifies as “unusually high thermal stress”. Result: the media play along and keep reporting on “another heat wave” almost on weekly basis.

Heat wave after heat wave

If we take Berlin and apply the DWD’s new definition for the year 1992, for example, Germany’s capital in fact saw 7 heat waves that summer: May 21-23, June 2-5, June 27 – July 1, July 8-10, July 19-21, July 30 – August 3 and August 5-10. Yet, back then Germans were not bombarded by the media with news of heat waves. Back then it was: it’s summer, stupid!

And note how the DWD uses the ancient 1961-1990 reference period for comparison, a time when the mean temps were about a degree lower and all the talk was about global cooling and the next ice age. This is the trick used to justify 28°C as “unusually high thermal stress”. Never mind that days with highs in the upper 20s often come with nights with temps in mid teens that have people grabbing their jackets.

Not a super hot summer

Anecdotally, this year I can say it’s been a warm and pleasant summer here in northwestern Germany; it was certainly too dry. But I didn’t think it was “a scorcher” because so many evenings were too cool to sit outside without a jacket. Moreover, there was not a single night that I found it to be difficult to sleep. And during earlier hot German summers, I remember having the electric fan running in the office for days. This summer I never had to use it once.

It’s a bit like the WHO changing its definition of a “pandemic” so that authorities are now able to declare a crisis anytime a grippe breaks out.

Physics breakthrough may result in environment friendly quantum computer systems

A team of scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics recently demonstrated a record-breaking experiment that could turn the quantum computing industry on its head.

In essence, modern physicists are darting back and forth between trying to scale quantum computers to functional sizes and attempting to squelch all the noisy errors as the systems grow.

When it comes to qubits, the quantum equivalent of computer bits, bigger is usually better. But it’s also much noisier.

The main reason for this is that it’s incredibly difficult to produce qubits reliably without relying on random states — this is called the probabilistic method for generating qubits.

Essentially, scientists just sort of smash things around until the desired result emerges.

The researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics took a different route.

According to their paper:

We have presented a scalable and freely programmable source of entangled photons, demonstrating—to our knowledge—the largest entangled states of optical photons to this day. It is deterministic in the sense that no probabilistic entangling gates are required. This gives us a clear scaling advantage over previous schemes.

Let’s dive in

Quantum computing relies on entanglementthat’s when two or more objects are prepared in such a way that anything that happens to one affects the other with total disregard for distance.

Typically, photons (individual units of light) are entangled inside of a special kind of crystal. This results in a type of entanglement that’s relatively unpredictable. Scientists struggled to generate qubits effectively using this method because it’s probabilistic.

The Max Planck team did away with the crystal creation chamber and instead turned a single atom into an entangled photon generator.

Per a press release from the Max Planck Institute:

The researchers generated up to 14 entangled photons in an optical resonator, which can be prepared into specific quantum physical states in a targeted and very efficient manner. The new method could facilitate the construction of powerful and robust quantum computers, and serve the secure transmission of data in the future.

The team managed to beat the previous record of 12 entangled photons using this method and they reached generation levels of near 50%.

In other words, they were able to generate stable entangled photons nearly half the time. This allowed them to perform longer, more accurate measurements on the photons themselves.

Eureka?

This could very well represent a ‘eureka moment’ on par with Google’s recent discovery of time crystals.

According to the researchers, this technique for generating stable qubits could have massive implications for the entire field of quantum computing, but especially for scalability and noise-reduction:

At this stage, our system faces mostly technical limitations, such as optical losses, finite cooperation and imperfect Raman pulses. Even modest improvements in these respects would put us within reach of loss and fault tolerance thresholds for quantum error correction.

It’ll take some time to see how well this experimental generation of qubits translates into an actual computation device, but there’s plenty of reason to be optimistic.

There are numerous different methods by which qubits can be made, and each lends to its own unique machine architecture. The upside here is that the scientists were able to generate their results with a single atom.

This indicates that the technique would be useful outside of computing. If, for example, it could be developed into a two-atom system, it could lead to a novel method for secure quantum communication.
